Chevrolet Suburban owners have reported 45 problems related to engine burning oil (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
2010 5. 3l engine consumes oil at an excessive rate. The lack of a low oil warning has caused the engine to be run without oil for excessive periods of time. Engine issues include stalling and inability to start vehicle until diagnosed by mechanic as being void of oil. Oil consumption has been as high as 100% within a six month period after completing a certified oil change by ase professionals.

Active fuel management (afm) lifters jam/seize causing push rods to remain collapsed and causing engine misfires throughout the engine and excessive oil burning, possible damage to catalytic converters, and premature engine wear. Lifters must be replaced or engine replaced. I was driving the car and when the engine began misfiring, check engine light began blinking, traction control became disabled, and error on dash saying service stabilitrak and traction control disabled appeared. The car began to shift erratically shaking and lunging.

Stability traction control light keeps coming on while in motion. With major oil consumption problems. Just in regular driving I've had transmission, and rear differential work done fixed the problem for a few months now back again with flashing check engine light. Saying cylinder 6 misfiring. I've already sunk in over 4k in this after buying it last year in Dec. Of 2017. After reading comments this really should be a recall. With so many of the same concerns and complaints that have been listed.
The vehicle has had numerous engine issues and abnormal oil consumption. The motor has failed at 149,000 miles and follows the pattern of numerous other complaints. Oil consumption lifter noise complete engine failure.

Apparently there was a technical bulletin issued for this truck. The special warranty was for 120,000 or year 2018. In 2015 I disputed the engine failure and also the oil consumption and the#7 cylinder. My truck was at 170,000 miles and gm refused to pay for the repair. On August 20, 2016, my truck was having the same problems. I returned it back to the same dealer and they said it was the same problem again, this repair was performed less than a year. I called gm again and they refused to make the dealership warranty the repair from last year. Gm knows that this engine is faulty and refuse to recall this 5. 3 engine. Now I have to pay for a new engine.
Excessive oil consumption. 1 month of driving is equal to 2-3 quarts of oil replacement.
The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban. While driving various speeds, the vehicle lost power and the vehicle failed to accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed. The contact stated that various warning indicators were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to manassas Chevrolet (8000 sudley rd, manassas, va 20109 (703) 596-3031) where it was diagnosed that the catalytic converter needed replacement. The contact stated that the catalytic converter was replaced, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was then taken to luck Chevrolet (516 s washington hwy, ashland, va 23005 (804) 368-6473) where it was diagnosed that the number one and seven spark plugs were covered with oil gunk. The spark plugs were replaced. The dealer also stated that the motor in the vehicle was burning oil and continuously caused the number one and 7 spark plugs to fail. The contact stated that the failure would recur every 3-4 months. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. The failure mileage was 120,000.
The engine has a design flaw and consumes oil rapidly, loses oil and deteriorates internal parts of motor causing total engine replacement or repair. This motor is currently apart of a class action lawsuit but the lawsuit is only for this engine in the 2010-2013 vehicles. This motor however has been in gm vehicle since 2007 and I assume that the company withheld this information from consumers and public just as they did in 2010. I believe that gm should be responsible for the design flaw of motor in all vehicles that included the engine. Personally I had to replace my motor for excessive oil consumption at the cost of $7,712. 13 which included taxes. Then, of course, the motor you put in inherently has the same issue and its just a matter of time before it fails due to excessive oil consumption. The lawsuit is going to be filed for 2010-2013 models I think there should be a recall and I would like to see pressure to include earlier models with the exact same motor.
2008 Suburban 135k. Vehicle has been running well, all routine maintenance was done. Without any warning the vehicle was 3 quarts low on oil. Dealer checked engine told new engine needed. I was told a common problem further investigation I noted far to many similar complaints. This seems to be a defect in engine design. It should not require deaths before this issue is investigated. Like so many others repair cost is an unexpected burden. Gm response the vehicle high mileage and age are a factor. This problem has affected vehicles with a rang of miles. Gm should recall the 5. 3l engine and repair the defect. The first issue with vehicle I was driving on highway the warning light came on. Please take the time to look into this issue. Gm has indicated 2 quarts of oil being burned in 3000 miles is normal. Please take the time to look into the matter. Gm shouldn't be the only bail out. No prior warning was given, no warning lights or low oil indication , no leaks.
Excessive oil consumption. Vehicle use 2 quarts of oil every 3000 miles. This is a know manufacturer defect but yet they are making me pay for the repairs.

Excessive oil consumption is a problem affecting a lot of people with this model in 2009-2010. Chevy needs to issue the recall and address their problem. Very sad and frustrating.
Excessive oil consumption which gm refuses to fix under warranty.
Dash panel has cracks on driver and passenger side. Both motor mounts are defective. Engine burns oil badly.
Chevrolet Suburban have a problem with excessive oil burning. And not doing anything about it.
Oil blow by when drops to 4 cylinders, took to dealership while under warranty to put in a bypass valve to "see" if will fix, didn't so next step was to have bottom half of engine rebuilt which I had to pay for out of pocket which then in turn ended up blowing up my whole engine either because the lifters got to hot & warp(which was the cause originally for the oil consumption as the heads) or the fact that the dealership sanded the heads which could have caused metal shavings to disperse through the engine. Either way the issue began while vehicle was under warranty as had been dealing with dealer for 2 years when issue began to the date engine blew. Had dealer put back together to take to another dealership for 2nd opinion and they also said it's been a know issue with the Suburban from 2007-2011 but is not a recall as of yet - I want my money back, I should not have had to pay for the "see if this works part", the bottom half of engine to be rebuilt, & then a new engine when gm & dealerships know this has been an issue for 4 years!!!! totally not acceptable. I'm not even including all the time & gas taken as had to take vehicle to dealer to test oil levels every 1,000 miles for 2 years - again when a known issue. Have paperwork from dealers on hand.
This engine is burning 2-3 quarts of oil in between oil changes (car has less than 50,000 miles on it). This is the only car I have had in 30 years that burns this much oil. I am constantly adding new oil to this engine and still having to change the oil regularly in order to stay in compliance with the manufacturer's warranty despite refilling half of the oil with new oil between changes.
As I'm slowing down my car shoots out almost into traffic. It wore down both my front and rear break pads. Also burns oil. I have to add a full bottle o oil every couple o weeks. Has smoked from exhaust real bad one time before I knew to add oil. Now since yesterday July 13, 2015 it says to service stabilitrak and traction control is off.
Upon start-up, plume of smoke from exhaust for 5 - 15 seconds. Also, excessive oil consumption, up to 1. 5 quarts per 500 miles.
The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Suburban. When the vehicle was started, the vehicle and the garage filled up with dark gray smoke without warning. The dealer diagnosed that the vehicle failed an oil consumption test due to an oil consumption leak. The dealer stated that the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact back to the dealer. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not worth the repair costs. The manufacturer offered the contact a deal to purchase a new vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 150,000.
No oil pressure light display. Shut off engine I had to add oil. I believe I have the same oil consumption problem many others have been concerned about. I've had to add oil to my Suburban ever since I bought it in 2009. I have to add oil every 1000 miles. Even if I've had an oil change. I carry extra oil with for fear of the no oil pressure light coming on. My most current problem was with oil still at 40%.
My 2008 Suburban started burning a tremendous amount of oil. Seems like I was continuously adding oil. Raised the issue with the dealer, who indicated it was a common problem but probably not worth the expense of fixing if I could keep checking the oil. This advice was also based on the fact that all my maintenance has been performed at this dealer, so they know the vehicle well. The last week in January was very busy and saw me driving about 100 miles a day. On Thursday, about 30 miles from home, the check engine and traction control lights starting blinking, the car lost power, and the engine began running rough. This was on a very busy highway (u. S. Route 50 near annapolis) during rush hour. This created a dangerous situation. I was eventually able to get the car home. When I brought it to the dealer, they said the oil was dry (I had checked it the previous weekend), a lifter had broken, and a piston head was scored. The cost of work to fix would exceed the cost of a new engine. I now have a new engine, the cost of which was not in my budget. This experience reflects what has been have reported frequently on automobile related web sites. . Given that this is a design flaw, Chevrolet should be covering at least part of this fix.
2007 chevy Suburban with 5. 3 afm engine. Driving down freeway and traction control, stabilink and engine light come on. Misfiring real bad. After getting it to shop they stated no compression in 2 cylinders. When told service manager he stated what problem was right away. Then confirmed it. Knew right away because it is common problem. Stated problem dropped lifters which damaged camshaft stemming from afm system. Would have to pay to tear down engine to be exact but will need a motor either way. This has been a common problem with the oil consumption problem with this motor. I had been experiencing oil consumption for a long time. I would burn a quart of oil driving 1000 miles on long trips. Every week I'm a 1/4-1/2 quart low. Chevy says this is normal and denies there is a problem but this is far from normal. This also stems from afm system. An 07 chevy Suburban that has been maintained should last more than 170,000 miles and chevy should stand by their product of a known issue. There have been fixes by chevy but none seem to work. I never formally filed a complaint with chevy or did oil consumption test( but they wouldn't have it if there wasn't a problem. I have just followed issue online waiting for a fix. But , motor died first. Also vehicle has a cracked dash which has been a common problem with this vehicle which chevy has since reinforced the places it cracks indicating there was a flaw in design but chevy refuses to fix.
Purchased a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban in 2010, with approximately 26,000 miles. It currently has 64,353 miles and the engine is vigorously consuming oil. On July 10th, 2013 I was on the parkway when I began to hear a ticking nose coming from the front of the vehicle, the warning indicator inside the car went off and the display read "oil pressure low", the actual reader gage was marking nearly at 0. I exited at the nearest exit, and had to refill the motor oil with nearly 6 qts. The next oil change is not due til about a month from now or another 600 miles. There aren't any visible leaks, the truck just seems to be burning oil faster than I can run it through to the next scheduled oil change or the 3,000 miles usually allowed by most oils. I have done some research and it appears that a good amount of this particular model have the same exact issue. I do not understand how it falls on the consumer to make such repairs when it is clearly a matter that should be corrected by Chevrolet. I don't believe this is a safety issue, but it is certainly a matter that should be taken care of as running a vehicle without motor oil could potentially kill the engine, and permanently disable a vehicle, or even worse bring up a class action lawsuit against the manufactures. I've been a faithful customer of Chevrolet but this could perhaps be a deal breaker for me, as it has been for many individuals whom have traded off their vehicles for something a bit more reliable.
Consumption of oil due to the stuck ring and been complaining since I hit 100k miles the dealer just gave me the run around.
The engine is burning 2 quarts of oil every 3000 miles.
I purchased a 2008 chevy Suburban ltz on September 24, 2011. Shortly thereafter I began to notice that the oil pressure gauge seems to behave erratically, I later learned the car burned oil. I took the car to the dealership in January of 2013 complaining of oil stains on my driveway and that I had placed two quarts of oil in my car within one week. The dealership explained to me this was a common problem and that I would have to have about $4,000-$5,000 of repairs done to rebuild my engine. They also explained that this was a warranty item and that gm would cover it. I was informed by the dealership that gm told them that I had to go through an “oil consumption test” which I did, they performed an oil change on January 31, 2013. I brought the vehicle in for service on February 19, 2013 and the dealer notes that it has burned . 75 (3/4) of a quart of oil. When I asked if gm would fix the problem, they said no, that another test was needed. I’ve never purchased or owned a car where burning oil is acceptable. I brief google search of “suburban oil consumption issues” results in approximately 2. 8 million results and there are several pages discussing this apparent common problem. I called gm on February 19, 2013 and was only able to speak with “michele” and a supervisor in the philippines who assigned me a case number I believe this is a large problem and want a recall and fix.
2008 Chevrolet Suburban 5. 3l afm oil consumption --> extremely frustrated with gm service given me the runaround regarding a poor engine design which leads to bad rings and high oil consumption. Bad rings can be verified by doing a compression check on the cylinder, as opposed to checking how much oil is being used per mileage. Excessive usage is define 0. 5 quarts per 500 miles. Last three oil changes, I have use 6 quarts in 3000 miles. My vehicle is under warranty, and they are trying to delay the problem until it is out of warranty. There is numerous complaints of this online. They should replace the pistons and rings and afm lifters and add the new oil baffle.
Engine oil consumption issue. Vehicle had been to bayside Chevrolet in prince frederick, MD several times for repairs but never fixed. Final time was pistons and rings replaced. 13 months and 23000 miles later the engine needed to be replaced.
The oil was 1 1/2 quarts low after only 900 miles. They filled it up and again in oct, it was 1 quart low after only 700 miles. I had a terrible family tragedy in Dec and was unable to get my consumption documented however, I did have an oil change. I am not sure what happened and why it was not documented but, I was told that the oil tag was "missing" and that they were starting a new tag. In Feb I went again for an oil change. On April 15th my oiling came on stating my oil was low and needed an oil change. On April 16th I noticed my truck start to hesitate and chug after taking off from a stop light or stop sign. I though perhaps it was bad gas. I used the rest of the tank and filled up on April 18th. On April 19th I noticed it was still hesitating and getting worse, now it was not only after coming to a complete stop, it was random and more frequent. The morning of April 20th I called al serra and told them I was scared and felt like it was a danger to drive my 5 children around in fear that we would lose power on the highway or getting on the highway or in the middle of an intersection. The service rep stated they could not get my truck in until Tuesday. I was not happy with that answer and visited a local mechanic. Upon my arrival I told my mechanic that my car was hesitating and losing power. The mechanic test drive the vehicle and came back to tell me the oil was bone dry. He stated that if I had driven much further, the engine would have seized. He wanted me to how the vehicle to al serra e no help and stranded with my 5 children. Now, this has been an ongoing problem since January of 2012. Of course, my factory warranty has now run out and it is 3 months past the warranty of the repairs that were made. However, the ongoing problem was documented prior, much prior, to the repair warranty running out. Oil consumption gm ignoring problem.
I find it interesting that there are so many comments about burning oil on the Suburban. I bought this car new in 2007 with 0 miles. In 2011 when had my usual oil changed and noticed that within 1 month my indicator came on that the oil was low and to add oil. I went back to the location where I had it changed and complained that they didn't properly fill the oil. The argued that they did and I was wrong. They then put 2 quarts in and I went on my way. A month later, again, the same issue. I took the car to the Chevrolet dealer where we purchased it and they said that the reason the car was burning oil was because I should use a different weight of oil during the hot texas summer months. Ever since this time my car burns oil no matter what type of oil I put in. No matter what time of year - hot or cold. I keep extra quarts in the back for emergencies. When I start the engine on most days, but not all days, a white puff of smoke comes from the exhaust. The dealer insists that there is nothing wrong. It's obvious based on other consumer comments that this is a manufacturer's defect. At about 100k the tire sensor went and now at 113k another tire sensor is gone as well as the driver side automatic door locks. Typically when I take my car to the dealer to be fixed it runs at least $1000. I was planning for this car to last at least another 50k miles. We'll see. . .
Excessive oil consumption - at least 1qt per 1k miles sometimes more. Chevy eventually fixed this under warranty after proving out the consumption. Chevy corporate is aware of this problem in these trucks and has not only written it up, but has designed a fix for it, dealer states chevy corp declined to issue a recall because it's a $1600 repair. The issue is two-fold. Something to do with the valves not sealing correctly and oil in the oil plan splashing up onto the cylinder walls faster than the rings can removie it. When my vehicle was repaired, they did some work to the valve train, replaced fouled spark plugs and added some type of baffle to the oil pan. Fix improved power, fuel consumption and reduced oil consumptions to normal levels. Truck now runs like new. If you are experiencing this go to chevy and demand the fix. You'll need to prove the oil consumption either through oil change logs, or as I did - which was to do an oil change at the dealer, have the oil plugs sealed by the dealer, then drive it 6,000 miles - having the dealer refill the oil when low to track consumption. They won't want to fix this because it's so expensive but demand the repair under the warranty.
