2 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/28/2015

When vehicle is idling while not moving extreme amounts of exhaust fumes are entering the cabin area through the ventilation system. This is due to defective exhaust manifold bolts which are breaking allowing the exhaust manifold to open and allow fumes to enter the engine compartment which results in the exhaust fumes entering the passenger cabin area through the ventilation system. This is a health issue for passengers inside the cabin breathing the toxic exhaust fumes. This should be a safety recall on gm to fix the problem due to poor engineering design and for using poor quality components which fail for no reason. Also this is an extremely dangerous situation for passengers inside the vehicle, which have to breath the dangerous exhaust fumes. Gm should be made to repair all vehicles affected by this problem which were designed and engineered with inferior parts which are causing this dangerous situation for millions of people across this country.

3 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/19/2015

I have noticed over the last few oil changes at every 3000 miles. There seems to be an extensive amount of oil consumption with this motor. It seems to me that it consumes a quart every 1000 miles. There is no visible leaks on the motor or any where in the engine compartment. Also I have noticed that at a cold start up there is a "puff" of black smoke that comes out of the tail pipe. This also can be confirmed by looking at the tip of the tail pipe and the rear body panel behind the tail pipe were black soot has formed.

6 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/12/2014

The bolts that hold the exhaust manifolds down are breaking off at the heads and causing exhaust leaks. Which are in turn causing my catalytic converters fail prematurely. I hope gm fixes this massive problem with there LS v8 engines!.

The rear exhaust manifold bolts on both the driver's side and passenger side are broke and now the vehicle has an exhaust leak.

9 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 04/18/2012

After so long ignoring the smell in my cab, I decided to get it checked out at benny's exhaust in bristol, TN, and found that exhaust manifold head bolts broke off on both sides of engine. 1st bolt initially then second bolt next to it broke as well. No work has been done to motor or aftermarket parts added that would affect this part and create failure. Exhaust gas enters the underhood area sometime can be smelled inside passenger cab area. The exhaust makes a black plume up side of motor on both sides. This vehicle can not be registered in any state that has emissions testing, because it will not pass. I am forced to register it to non-testing states. Why isn't there a recall on this matter. It appears that this affects all years. What is wrong with gm, why won't they take care of this matter. After someone spends several tens of thousands on a vehicle, why isn't safety the standard gm should measure itself up too. Engineers, are you making sure planned obsolescence is built into all your vehicles. I won't buy gm no more after owning gm all my life.

11 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 11/17/2011

Left-side engine manifold bolts broke off, causing exhaust gas to escape into the engine compartment on the opposite side of the firewall from the driver. The escaping exhaust causes a 'ticking' noise, which is what brought this to the attention of the owner (me). The vehicle is well-maintained and is never used in harsh or demanding conditions. Primary use is transporting family in urban area. There has been no prior service work that required manifold to be removed. The manifold bolts are defective. This is a serious safety and epa issue due to exhaust gases being released in the engine compartment, and the possibility of the heat from the exhaust negatively affecting sensors and other vital engine components.

12 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

Noticed no bolt head on drivers side rear exhaust manifold, was not sure if it was supposed to be there. Then found another bolt head in skid guard during oil change, this was from the front bolt of same exhaust manifold! the heads broke off cleanly for no visible reason. Fixed front bolt but rear one reqires exhaust manifold removal at cost of $400. 00. This could be very dangerous if more break!.

13 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 01/20/2005

2004 chevy Suburban exhaust system produces noise at idle ;driving;and after shut down. Gm claims noise (popping) is from muffler heat shield expansion and contraction. TSB to correct noise (modifying heat shield) is ineffective. In 2004 motor magazine reported gm acknowledged the noise came from trapped water inside the muffler. The water turns to super heated steam and produces a pop or bang inside the muffler. Gm will not replace the muffler as the problem goes back to 2000 model year. Moreover people ask what that strange noise is from my Suburban, I tell them a defective muffler.

14 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/18/2004

1996 Chevrolet Suburban developed problems with the brakes, intake manifold, engine cooling, transmission, tires, fuel injectors, fuel consumption and wipers. 15 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 11/01/2004

Purchased 1999 Chevrolet Suburban in January 2004. Also purchased warranty, vehicle started to use anitfreeze, returned vehicle to dealership in may 2004 diagnosis intake manifold gasket leaking. Dealership replaced gaskets vehicle started to use antifreeze again. Again we took it back to the dealership November 1, 2004. Service deparment contacted me on November 2, 2004 diagnosis: leaking intake manifold gasket again. We purchased what we thought would be reliable transportation, obviously we were mistaken. If we cannot get to work we cannot make the payents. Im disgusted.

16 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban

17 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/09/2004

Vehicle had an odor that smelled like antifreeze. Consumer and all of her family members and friends became ill after riding in the vehicle. They had headaches/burning eyes/numbness, and sore throats. The problem was reported, and the manufacturer stated nothing was wrong with the vehicle, however consumer was told that prior to the purchase of the vehicle there was an antifreeze spill, and she was not made aware of that at time of purchase. Consumer stopped driving the vehicle.

18 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 05/15/2004

I have owned 2 1996-1997 Chevrolet Suburban and have had the intake manifold leak on both at about 85000 miles. I did a little local research and found that this is a very common problem for the vortec 5. 7 engine. When I called the dealership about a coolant leak from the engine area, the service writer said this was most likely the intake manifold because they get that all the time. Toay, I noticed a coolant puddle in my drive way and upon looking into it, my latest 1996 Suburban with a vortec 5. 7 is leaking at the intake manifold. This is a costly problem to the consumer. It costs approximately $500. 00 to have this done. I now must make the decission to have it fixed at the dealer for $500 or to do it myself for about $150. 00 and a day of headaches.

19 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/15/2003

I have replaced the intake manifold gasket twice now for my 1996 Chevrolet Suburban. Both times it has cost me over $650. 00. Both mechanics told me that they see these at least twice a week on the 5. 7 engines. They knew exactly what was wrong. They actually laughed when I asked them if it was set up as a recall item for this engine.

20 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/23/2003

Consumer states intake manifold was leaking. Dealer notified.

21 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 03/01/2003

The vehicle displayed a loud noise that sounded like a muffler and or vacuum. The vehicle was taken to the dealer in which they had taken diagnostic tests but wasn't sure what the problem was. They then stated that there was a known problem with the intake system in which air would surround the engine. The problem seemed to worsen each time the vehicle was in motion. The right front window was inoperative due to the motor going bad.

22 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 11/12/2002

Consumer states the engine gasket and the intake manifold are deteriorate. Dealer has inspected an replaced parts. Please provide further information. Mr.

23 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/10/2002

The intake manifold cracked on the 1999 chevy 1500 (suburban) and let water get into the firing chamber from the cooling system. It happened in 2002 at about 60,000 and again at 2008 at about 110,000. . . I was told by my mechanic that it was a plastic component that warbles when it heats and cools over time and cracks. It cost over $1000. To replace it each time it cracks. Is there a recall or any way I can get any money from gm for this poorly designed part??? is there a recall or service bulletin out on the problem?????.

24 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/11/2001

The first reported item: shoulder belt anchors, 3 of the shoulder anchors have come loss, the first came completely off, after noticing, I regularly check and tighten. There appears to be no mechanical locking device to keep this from repeating. The second item reported is the exhaust leak. The dealer repeatedly has fixed the same leak, it fills the vehicle with fumes and is dangerous. I finally replaced the exhaust manifolds at my expense to make the vehicle safe. The failed component was always the exhaust manifold to "y" pipe gaskets. The third could have been disasterous, the throttle cable failed leaving the vehicle stuck at full throttle.
