2 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/01/2012

Just like every other chevy with the 4. 8l or 5. 3l engine, the exhaust mainfold bolts broke off. Causing an exhaust leak, and shortening the lifetime of the vehicle. Epa should be involved, as most of these vehicles experience this issue. It is ridiculously expensive to fix, $2500+.

3 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 05/16/2011

2003 Chevrolet Suburban 5. 3l gas engine. Vehicle started making a ticking sound. Upon investigation I found the driver side rear exhaust manifold bolt head had snapped off. No work had been done to the vehicles exhaust system prior to this. Upon further inspection visual soot can be seen on the firewall indicatimg exhaust gasses are coming in conact with the passenger compartment. I feel this poses a huge fire hazard if left running long enought to generate sufficient heat for combustion. I also feel it is an emissions related concern since exhaust gasses are escapng the system upstram from the catalytic converters and posing the risk of exhaust gasses entering the vehicle. I have contacted gm and have recieved no positive response to dealing with this issue.

4 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

Exhaust manifold bolt head broke off. 1st bolt initially then second bolt next to it broke as well. No work has been done to motor or aftermarket parts added that would affect this part and create failure. Exhaust gas enters the underhood area . The exhaust makes a black plume up side of motor. Concerned that the leak could worsen leading to exhaust fumes entering passenger compartment. I do not know if the escaping hot exhaust gas could lead to fire. In addition, I would think the epa would be concerned about effects on vehicle emissions. The leaking exhaust gas is not passed thourgh the catalytic converter. The leaking gas is also not sampled by the oxygen sensor and could effect the sensors input to the vehicle computer. I see by doing simple internet searches on this topic that the bolt failure and leaking exhaust manifold problem is widespread. I have not repaired the broken bolts yet.

5 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/15/2010

I am the owner of a 2002 chevy Suburban, v8 engine. Approximately 8 months ago my car began making terrible noises. Took it to my local chevy dealer who informed me I had broken exhaust manifold bolts. And it would cost over $1000 to repair! I did not have the money to fix it and dealer said it wouldn't hurt car to continue driving. In July of 2010, my check engine light kept coming on and took it to get repaired. I was told I needed to replace my catalytic converters. $800 later I thought they were seperate problems. I come to realize that it was directly related to the bolt issue. Through my research, I have learned this is a very common problem with gm cars. Why wasn't there a recal????? I feel duped by gm and my government.

7 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 11/28/2008

I have a 2004 chevy Suburban 1500 with 90k miles. In November 2008 at 80k miles I noticed the heater wasn't heating. Checked af to find it was a gal low. No leaks detected anywhere and no smoking from exhaust. A few weeks later the same thing happened. After taking the vehicle to 3 garages including one authorized gm dealer, all diagnostic test were negative for cracked heads or head gaskets. Suggestive of problem but not definitive. The gm dealer started an oil consumption study d/t having to add 1 - 1. 5 quarts oil every 1500 - 2000 miles. In and out of the shop until June 2009 when we experience sudden loss of oil pressure, engine started knocking but not smoking. I changed the oil again and drove the vehicle the next morning. Made it 25 miles when oil pressure dropped again and engine started knocking. I actually drove the vehicle back home under full power but alarms going off and no oil pressure. I pulled the oil pan off and found the rod bearings burned and crystallized. Now looking at new engine. Gm denies problem with that model engine and refuses to offer any assistance. Just prior to experiencing the engine problems we did have to replace the catalytic converter. All of instances started around 80k miles.

8 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 04/15/2008

We have a 2007 chevy Suburban it starting using excess oil around 21,000 miles when have had 2 oil consumption test done at the dealer. They replaced value seals 1,4,7,6 . . Then started another oil consumption test. Low and behold it lost a quart at 1750 miles. They are now looking at replacing lifters. . . We currently have 33,000 miles on the vehicle. . Have to keep running back every 500 miles to get this check. At first they kept saying normal to lose a quart of oil but now realize it is not normal. . Have yet resolved the issue. Very upsetting to have a new vehicle and paid $48k and have to keep returning to the repair shop. We have looked up on the internet and it seems there has been many issue with this vehicle. .

9 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/23/2005

This is a pre-cautionary complaint as a result of my shock regarding gm's 8. 1l engine in the Suburbans. Also would apply to silverado hd as well. The vehicle is using excessive oil which to my surprise gm says is normal. Oil usage is 1. 25 qts per 2000 miles and gm indicated that the vehicle could use as much as 1qt per 1000 miles (assuming 10 miles to the gallon). The concern is regarding emissions durability and indirect failures as a result of this oil loading into the exhaust and catalytic converter. Gm would not provide details to me but, industry norms are assuming worst case 1/2 of this level of expected oil usage. Gm was unconcerned and has a bulletin for their dealers stating this. I feel this should be investigated both from a safety standpoint for potential engine failure and for emissions durability and environmental compliance.
