2004 Dodge Durango 4x4 w/5. 7 hemi engine. Catastrophic engine failure: all service performed as per manufacturers specifications at an authorized Dodge dealer. Turned the ignition to start the truck and heard a loud noise. Afterward, the ignition would not turn over and the vehicle made a ticking sound. Had the truck towed to the dealer thinking it may be a failed battery. After replacing the battery (the service technician also suspected a battery) the car failed to hold a charge. Upon further inspection on the rack the mechanic identified a significant hole in the engine block and a significant crack in the transmission to engine interface. The mechanic deduced that as an engine component blew, the force of which shorted the battery, the starter and cracked the transmission interface. After removing the battery, the terminal to the negative ground was dislodged, the battery was bulging at the sides, and the engine is dead. Chrysler motor company says they have no prior knowledge of any problems with hemi engines, and given the car is out of warranty. . Sorry nothing they can do. This is a problem that exists and is documented on NHTSA and other public forums. The option presented by Chrysler is $5500 plus labor for a re-manufactured engine. Estimated labor is $1900. The dealer doesn't get much of a break from Chrysler for this engine, but gets all the hassle for the shoddy work the company sells. This is a heavy duty truck, an engine should not die at 125,000 miles.

2006 Dodge Durango has had multiple engine & electrical problems within 6 month period. First car lost all power while driving at 35 mph, took all strength to get car to shoulder of the road w/o power steering & locked steering column. Local mechanic said that computer was fried & covered under emissions warranty. Towed to Dodge dealership who said there was not a computer problem, just cam shaft needed replacing & recall on instrument panel cluster. After $450 repair for cam shaft & tow, a week later car started having electrical problems. Aprox every other time I would start car, the radio & electrical display (clock) on radio would not work--appeared to not get power. Six weeks later, check engine light came on again. By this time, original Dodge dealership had been closed, so went to another Dodge dealer for service. They found another wiring problem with engine. Could not identify problem with audio/clock. Check engine light went on about 2 months later. This time local mechanic advised it was a fuel pump problem. Replaced fuel pump, checked fuse & still could not identify problem with audio/display. 9 days later went to start car in the am, and electrical seemed to sputter (lights, instrument pane, wipers, radio) but car would not start. Starter does not appear to be engaging the engine at all. Diagnosed as started motor problem, starter motor replaced, but car still not fixed. Then told battery terminals & cables needed to be replaced. Car now starts, but audio/display issue still unresolved. Concern that there is a larger problem with the electrical system of this vehicle, which is the root cause of all recent problems. Getting scared to drive this car on interstate or in any level of traffic for fear that it will stall out or lose power during operation again. The car only has 42,000 miles on it. First problem started with 37,000 miles on vehicle. I hate this car!!!!!.

Vehicle shuts down without warning. In March 2007 the Durango started to loose all power and just shut down. We had it towed to a shop, and had new pcm installed. A few months ago, problem started to re-occur again. Had it towed a few more times, back in the shop to have new starter. Dies 2 days later, put in new battery and cables. Durango shut down in middle of busy intersection, and has now been towed to an auto shop. . Read more...

In March of 2001 I bought a 2001 Dodge Durango 4x4 the first year was great , then despite the fact that I took my vehicle in evey 3000 mi. For whatever was manufacturer recommended maintenance , and the dealers 27 point inspection, the front brakes were suddenly completely shot and cost in excess of $450 to repair
last June I believe , right after getting serviced and a front end alignment ,I drove to work , attempted to shut off vehicle, and it refused the engine sped up , the lights flashed , the gauges went wild, and it finally died. Day after day they cept telling me they didnt know what the problem was ,after a week of being worked on the dealership informed me the starter had "gone" and it would be 24 to 48 hours before they could get one
about the same time the front end started to make a strange grinding noise while backing up while turning. . . . They still havent figured out this one. . . . . But im wondering if it is a balljoint issue
also after several of the regularly schedueled services I complained that there was fluid left on my driveway. I was told that it was run off from the frame of some of the old oil,. . . . Now after it is out of warranty, they finally found the leak. . . . The power steering rack is leaking
OH and I almost forgot, when I first got this vehicle, the left rear brake light didnt always work. . . After 4 or 5 attempts to get it repaired , I had a mechanic friend of mine look it over . . . In less than 5 minutes he told me the contacts in the housing were defective . . . . I got the dealership to check into it and they replaced it and it has been fine ever since
this vehicle has always had its manufacturers recommended services at the interval required , it was very expensive to buy , and to maintain, it only has 40,000 mi. On it , and looks great, but appearntly it is a money pitt and death trap all rolled into one!!.
