36 Wiring problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 04/12/2013

Vehicle was parked on a residential side street for approximately 5 hours when it caught fire under the hood. The entire front end and dash was destroyed. The fire department stated it appeared to be an obvious electrical problem, so they did not need to investigate further. They had to remove the interior roof because the wiring had started burning along the edges of the roof interior. The vehicle was up-to-date on factory recalls, and despite this, it still burned. I did not receive a warning, the instrument panel was clear, and the 2004 Durango only had about 75500 miles as of 4/2013. I was the sole owner.

37 Wiring problem of the 2006 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 03/12/2013

I have a 2006 Dodge Durango, bought it used about 4 years ago. About a year and half ago, approximately March of 2013, the vehicle started to stall while driving. It happened at all speeds and after it happening multiple times we figured out that it happened when it was wet/raining out. This is extremely scary and dangerous when going 70mph on the highway. . . To have your vehicle jerk numerous times and then completely shutoff (aka no power at all!). We have spent a few thousand dollars since spring of 2013 trying to fix the issue. We worked closely with our dealer to figure out the exact problem. . . Figured out it was electrical (possibly when the windshield wiper are used. . . )but that was about as far as we got. Some of the things they found and/or fixed or replaced are as follows: wiring that was frayed, re-ground numerous wires, replaced a handful of sensors, resealed connections between electrical components and main module (as well as resealed the boxes themselves since water was found in them), replaced the electrical module ($2k), and replaced entire electrical box(which included having to re-wire). . . Found a used one since brand new would have been $1200! . I have recently seen that there was a petition to the government to investigate (and hopefully recall) vehicles that have situations similar to what I have described above but they reference vehicles manufactured 2007 and forward but our 2006 is having the same issues!! since it has been to the dealer last (less than a month ago) we have not had the problem but there was a stretch over the winter where it didn't happen at all either so I am not convinced it is fixed. . . It seems the dealer mechanic is about out of ideas and so are we. . .

39 Wiring problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 02/18/2013

My well-maintained 2004 Dodge Durango slt began doing something bizarre a few months ago at about 120,000 miles. This has 4. 7l v8 and the awd-4hi-4lo 2-speed transfer case. The "service 4wd" and the traction control light began flashing, and it felt like the transfer case was stuck in 4hi with the tires grabbing on a turn. The selector knob on the dash would not function. I brought the truck to my mechanic who checked the function of the transfer case motor, inspected the motor and wiring, and changed the transfer case fluid again. I called my local Chrysler dealer and they advised that they would need to change the transfer case motor. The motor costs $1190 plus two hours labor and two quarts of atf+4 fluid. I brought the truck back to my mechanic and he said there is nothing wrong with the motor or the transfer case or the dash selector knob. He said he believes this is a control module or programming issue. I got a third opinion at my local lee myles. They concurred that there is nothing wrong with the transfer case motor and there must be some issue with the computer, programming, or one or more of the control modules. The truck continues to do the same thing. The malfunction condition exists approximately 65% of the time. I can't afford to bring to the dealer now and spend over $1300 for a repair that I do not think will correct the problem. I have read on many message boards that this seems to be a very common issue with 2004-2006 Durangos and changing the motor, or the switch does not help the situation. I also notice that at times when I open the doors or unlock the doors with the key fob, I can hear the transfer case motor cycling. This seems to be an electrical or programming issue. It is very difficult to turn the wheels at low speeds when the malfunction condition exists and I fear this is straining the transmission.

41 Wiring problem of the 2012 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 11/30/2012

The totally integrated modular engine (time) has had many problems since the purchase of the 2012 Dodge Durango. The SUV has stopped dead while in drive on interstate 95. The panel lights has all come on all at once while driving. The engine has stalled and would not restart several times late at night. The exterior lights has gone off completely at night without panel light notification. The fog lights will not work at all times. The radio at times will not pay. The push start button will not always start the vehicle. The engine permits a foul order at times. The engine has gone from automatic to manuel drive without placement in manuel. The brake pedal will not come back after being pushed to the floor. The mother board has had to be replaced. The entire electrical system has shut down - vehicle had to be towed to the dealership. I have been given a rental car 4 times for an approximate total of 30 days to try to rectify the problems. I have 4 recalls for various issues and none have been fixed due to parts are not readily available. Recall id's - April 2014 service brakes and brakes hydraulic anti-lock #102663, #102664, #102298 and July 2014 105085 - electrical system wiring. There are several class action lawsuits against the Chrysler group, llc for the 2012 Dodge Durango. I no longer feel safe in this vehicle, I can possibly cause an accident or someone can hit me with all the problems and potentially hurt myself or others with all the recalls and engine problems.

42 Wiring problem of the 2003 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 04/09/2012

Tl- the contact owns a 2003 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that the air conditioning unit wiring harness overheated and failed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the wiring harness was found to be burned. The dealer replaced the wiring harness resister and blower. The dealer stated that the wiring harness was registering far too many amps. The contact stated that the failure was recurring. The failure mileage was 48,000 and the current mileage was 53,000. Kmj.

43 Wiring problem of the 2002 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 08/06/2011

While stopped at an intersection, the air conditioner/heater blower motor ceased to operate in all ranges even though the a/c was on and the compressor clutch was engaged. On inspection, it was observed that the first two pins of the resistor block were melted as was their corresponding sockets in the plug. Further, the wiring at the plug was severly oxidized and the insulation was melted back. I replaced the plug assembly and resistor block. The resistor block had been replaced three years prior when the lowest blower setting ceased to operate. Internet accounts occur frequently on this issue. This creates a cold weather hazard as the defroster will cease to operate creating a dangerous operating condition. Total cost of repair materials was approximately $125. 00.

44 Wiring problem of the 2001 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 01/26/2011

2001 Dodge Durango r/t has melted wiring located at the front blower fan resistor connection. The melted wiring and connector were producing an extremely bad burning odor when the blower fan stopped working except on the high setting. The fan will not be used until repairs are made. Apparently this is a known issue because my local dealer sells a replacement pigtail which they say they replace to resolve the problem. This indeed a fire hazard and should be recalled as a manufacturer defect. My local dealer advised there is no recall at this time.

45 Wiring problem of the 2001 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

Tl-the contact owns a 2001 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that the motor for the heater blew hot air and he smelled melting wires. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was confirmed that the resister, the wiring harness, and the blower motor had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact personally repaired the vehicle by replacing the resister, the wiring harness and the blower motor. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000. The current mileage was approximately 130,000. The VIN was unavailable. Mah.

46 Wiring problem of the 2002 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 10/04/2010

Begining October of 2010 my heater went out in my 2002 Dodge Durango. We replaced the wiring harness, the resister, and the blower motor. The connection between the resister and the wiring harness, continues to melt the first two prongs. In result the heater slowly goes out one setting at a time, as well as no heat, just cool air blows in the rear. After replacing all three parts it works for about a month before everything starts to fry again. After spending a $100. 00/mo for replacement parts and the expense of service, I'm extremely frustrated and broke. After much research on the internet I come to find that I am not the only one with this complaint. Going without a heater or defrost in the middle of winter in minnesota is not an option, especially with little children and it goes out as your stopped at a light and your window fogs up and can't see a thing. I hope with much consideration that this matter could be attended too.

47 Wiring problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

Purchased new 2004 Durango limited 5. 7 hemi: after 3 1/2 years and the warranty expiration, when driving in city traffic or highway and it starts raining the engine starts to hesitate violently, to the point it will stop. This occurs if the SUV is parked in the rain and the engine is started. I have to wait for a few minutes then the engine will start, but have another heart attack as I drive down the road. . I have had fuse panel, engine wiring, ecm checked and no one can find any problems? the engine recently started missing and my scanner showed p0308 : I removed the spark plug, checked the coil, wiring, injector, spark plug . . All ok and erased the code: the engine has about 79,000 miles on it and is properly maintained and garaged at night. . A stalling engine in inclement weather is a very very dangerous thing that Dodge/Chrysler seems to be ignoring. . The fact is evident that there are hundreds of Dodge customers with the same dangerous problem I feel we should not be partners to Dodge/Chrysler's defective dangerous vehicles and intervention by our federal government based on the number of complaints should be implemented immediately.

48 Wiring problem of the 2003 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 06/11/2010

Blower motor completely stops working due to blower motor resistor and attached wiring pigtail completely burning out. This problem has occurred every 12 -18 months over the last five years of ownership. The failure requires the replacement of a resistor(part # 5061575aa) and wiring harness connector kit. (part # 5017124ac) it is my understanding from the mechanics who have made these repairs that all or part of the parts requiring replacement have overheated to the extent of melting and/or burning prior to failure.

51 Wiring problem of the 2001 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 03/09/2009

Electrical**** check engine light came on codes stated that O2 sensors needed to be replaced. . I replaced them about 2 weeks later check engine light came back on. After another diagnostic test states that O2 sensor needs to be replaced. Driving in rush hour traffic it stalled. Made it to dealership states that the p/s switch leaked into the wiring harness and shorted out 02 sensors and possibly other sensors. And if not wiring harness is not replaced it could spark fire cost of repair 3k.

52 Wiring problem of the 2003 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 12/12/2008

I have had to replace the heater blower resistor once a year for the last 2 years in my 2003 Dodge Durango. This time the heater wiring harness pigtail connection was corroded and melted and burnt, it was melted to the resistor module. After replacing it now the abs light ,the brake light are on, the clock wont work, the speedometer will not work. This Durango only has 31,000 miles on it. The Dodge dealer service dept. Said they sell alot of these resistors. It sounds like there needs to be a recall before there are fires in this resistor or heater wiring harness. I saw lots of other people with the same problems on online auto chat boards. Please check into this problem.

Tilt wheel has caused short in steering column has caused the indicators and all electrical in the column to eventually quit completely. Believe it is from the wiring harness being too short when manufactured, when tilted continuously.

59 Wiring problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 12/06/2006

On Wednesday the 6th of December I was driving my Dodge Durango and noticed that the dome light was coming on and would not turn off intermittently that day my wife took the truck to the bank ,while she was there she smelled something burning. This got her attention and she looked at the gauges and noticed that all of the gauges were reading zero, the tow/haul light was on and then the wipers came on by themselves. A short time later smoke started blowing out of the vents. She quickly got out of the bank line and parked it. She called me so I drove down to check it over. As soon as I opened the door I noticed a strong odor of burnt wiring. I gave it a quick look over and found the turn signals and stop lights were also not working. Later that night we were able to drive it back to my shop(with the wipers still going)I checked on alldata for service bulletins to help me diagnose the problem and found recall c43 which seemed to be a match for our symptoms. I pulled the cluster to check for burnt wiring but did not find any. Further investigation revealed a strong burnt smell from the cluster. I called Dodge customer service to see if c43 applied to my vehicle and they said that it did not, because it was built 2 months after the recall date. I asked if they could offer any assistance but they flatly refused because I had pulled the gauges myself even though I am a certified mechanic with 11 years of experience. I have not corrected the problem yet but I will probably replace the cluster next week.

61 Wiring problem of the 2000 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 06/14/2006

We have a 2000 Dodge Durango that needs a new power box/harness. My mechanic tried to get a replacement part but was told by the parts manufacturer that due to known problems with the Durango power box/harness that the part was redesigned by daimler Chrysler. My mechanic told me that the problem with the power box harness shorted the wiring and that I was lucky that it did not ignite while I was driving. The cost to cover the repairs is over $4,000. I believe that this problem should have been recalled by daimler Chrysler and that I should not be responsible for the cost of repairs for something that could have caused grave danger to me and my family.

62 Wiring problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 02/07/2006

Numerous electrical problems with 2004 Dodge Durango. Within in 3 months of purchasing vehicle, 4 wheel drive began turning itself on without warning. This caused problems turning. Vehicle was taken back to benders in clovis numerous times before computer was reprogrammed, solving the problem. In January, 2006 the check engine light came on. Benders tested the vehicle and said that the computer wasn't receiving any input and it needed to be replaced. Had to drive the vehicle for almost a month before they would change out the computer. Problem seems to be resolved now, but I feel that there is a problem with the wiring in this vehicle to cause so many failures.

64 Wiring problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 07/08/2005

On July 8, 2005 at 6:30 am, I opened my car door to go to work and there had been afire inside the car during the night, causing extensive damage to the interior. Had the car towed to my state farm approved repair center. After repairs were started, the cause of the fire was determined by the repair shop to be a wire under the seat that was for electric seats which is not an option in my car. Dodge was notified and they said to stop repairs until they sent an inspector to look at car. He came the following week and determined Dodge was not at fault and sealed the file and was told to retain a lawyer if I wanted to find out why, otherwise too bad. I found a recall on 2001 Dodge rams that was for the same exact problem and 2 reported such fires in 2001 Durangos. My case is not an isolated incident and Dodge refuses to take care of the problem. The NHTSA id is 01v253000. Obviously Dodge did nothing to correct the problem and has not recalled the 2002 Dodges. Please help me. Valerie davis.
