47 problems related to car stall have been reported for the 1999 Dodge Intrepid. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
1999 Dodge Intrepid stall on a daily bases sometimes it will restart other times you have to wait 30 to 60 mins. It will start and drive then you shut it off it will not restart for 30 to 60 mins sometimes longer. Engine also has sludge build up. Vehicle has 108000 miles on it. It is the 2. 7 liter engine. After reading some of the other complaints I do not understand why there has not been a recall issued. This is a serious problem that can get someone injured or worse. There is no need in trying to fix this problem because you fix one thing and something else is going to go wrong. Chrysler needs to step up and fix this problem.
Driving to have maintenance performed on my 1999 Dodge Intrepid. While driving down the highway, engine suddenly died. I had no braking or steering control once this happened. Had the vehicle towed and was told I would need another engine. I have researched the price and it ranges from 1700 (used) to 5499 (remanufactured and installed).
Violent shaking of the vehicle. Loud metal clanging type noise. Sudden lack of acceleration. Stalling and failure of power steering at 45 mph. I was returning home from my son's school in heavy traffic and we almost crashed into a brick wall. Fortunately I was strong enough to maintain enough control of the steering wheel to somewhat safely stop the vehicle on the side of the road.

Without warning my 2. 7l engine seized up while I was driving causing a complete loss of control I hit a concrete post. Highway patrol came but did not press charges against me for property damage. This is a dangerous but well documented design flaw of this particular engine and I hope I can recover enough money from the texas based impartial services group to buy a new engine because I love my Dodge Intrepid. I'm only 18 years old and can't afford another vehicle. Just two days after I bought this Intrepid - while driving on the highway all the gauges including the speedometer failed and I had to pay $1414. 32 to have a new computer installed at my local Dodge dealership.
While driving home from work, going 60 mph, my car stalled (jerked) and within 2 seconds came back on by itself. The next day while driving to work, the car did the same thing. Today while driving to thanksgiving dinner at 25 mph, my car stalled completely. I heard no knocking or ticking prior to the stall. I was able to pull off to the side of the road; a hard feat in itself since the power steering went out. After 30 seconds, I was able to restart the car and finish my journey. On the way home from the dinner, traveling at 60 mph, my car stalled again. I was driving down a rural road and just wanted to make it home with my daughter; it was extremely cold outside with 25 mph winds and I was 25 miles from home. I was able to restart the car and continue on; this happened 3 times until the fourth time when the car would not turn over again. I got the car towed home on thanksgiving night at 7:00pm, most certainly ruining someone's holiday!.

Car started shaking, I was told that it was something to do with my tires, so I bought a new tire. Shaking continued, until the day I took the car in where I bought it and I didn't see it again for 6 months. I was told by the used car dealership that there was metal shavings in my oil and that I would need a new engine. After many attempts to get a low priced engine, numerous (and failed) attempts at a loan to pay for it, one was found by the used car dealership from where the car was purchased. They quoted a price of $3500 but when we went in to pay the price had gone up to $4200. The salesman said that he must have told us the wrong price. Anyway, the car was repaired and back in the land of the driving in March '05. Would have had the car back sooner but the garage that was repairing it did some damage to my car. First, the original man who took my engine apart, who either quit or was fired, put numerous engine parts in numerous boxes and placed them in numerous places. The owner couldn't find all of the parts. Second, they broke my windshield and had to order a new one, wait for it to come in, and then wait for it to be installed.
I purchased a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7l engine less than a year and a half ago. I maintained regular oil changes and had no problems until all of a sudden the engine started jerking and chugging and would no longer start. Several mechanics checked the car only to tell me that I would need a new engine which would cost $4000-$6000 dollars to rebuild and install. Every mechanic that I have called or talked immediately told me that this was a badly manufactured engine and that these engines usually do not last past 60 or 70,000 miles. Know I am without a car and out of $5000 dollars which is what I paid for the car, and need another $5000 to repair the engine.
Several times while driving the car has stalled on the skelly bypass in tulsa, we had to have it towed 3 times for service. The reading on the automobile kept saying it was the sensors we had the temp sensors, oxygen sensors, and 2 other sensors replaced withing weeks of each other each time the car would stall and not start for 20 or 30 minutes. The last time the car stalled was on 7-16-2004 , the temperature gage did not read hot but there was smoke coming from the engine. We let it set for 45 minutes and drove it to claremore where it stopped at the intersection and had to be pushed out of the road. We have had it looked at the mechanic says it either needs head gaskets, or has a cracked head. At this time the cost if it is the head gaskets it about $1000. 00. We have already spend aprox that much replacing sensors. We have priced a rebuilt or used motor if the engine is blown and that is anywhere from 2000. 00 to 3500. 00 not including labor. The engine at this time is still in the vehicle. The old sensors I assume were discarded by the repair shop.

My car stalled going 45 mph I was able to bounce it off a curb and bring it to a stop with out any mishaps, but I had my 7 and 5 year old daughters in the car with me and it shook them up pretty good. Had it towed to a garage and they told me the engine seized and it was going to cost me 6800. 00 to fix it. Im laid off from work with little income coming in along with a 300. 00 a month car payment on a car that doesnt even run. 1999 Dodge Intrepid with 2. 7l engine 74960 miles, oil changes every 3000 miles, and now the engine has to be replaced. Found websites with a lot of complaints about the same problem. There should be a recall. The dealer told me it would be $9000. 00 to replace and install new engine, which is worth more than the car. Need money to fix. Car is going to sit until something is done. Don't let this happen to anyone else. Just search the internet and find how many people there is out there with the same problem. Thank you.
The vehicle stalled while driving. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who determined that cause of the failure was due to sludge in the engine, and installed a new engine. The vehicle would not shift due to a faulty transmission output speed sensor.
