The Dodge Intrepid 2. 7 motor is a bad motor, I have already had it rebuilt one time and now it appears that I am going to have to have it done again. In July of 2007 I bought a 1999 Dodge Intrepid for my daughter's first car. I paid 3,000. 00 for it from an elderly lady in town. Within 2 months the timing chain snapped and wound itself around inside the engine and blew through the cam cover. It was towed to a service station and the engine was taken apart. I was told that the 2. 7 l engines are noted for overheating causing oil sludge to build up and the timing chains to break. I was also told it would cost me 4400. 00 to replace the engine with a used one. Updated 12-12-07. Updated.

10 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2007

Hi, I'm someone who also has been beat up my Chrysler Intrepid. On wenesday Feb 7, 2007 I was at an auction and saw this great looking 1999 Chrysler Intrepid with only 78,000 miles on it. My girl needed a good dependable car to get to work, man I didn't want another car payment, so I was very happy when I won the bid. The car ran very well, quite, 78,000 and a Dodge, you could not do better than that (smile). Well that's not true, my smile quickly turned into resentment after having the car only 9 days and the motor blew up. When I first got the interpid, I took it and got the oil changed the very next day, we road good for 9 days. After the motor blew I had it taken to the Dodge dealership not knowing why the car had just stopped and would not start again. I'm telling myself that it couldn't be the motor, because it only had 78,000 miles on it and everyone knows an engine like that is in great shape. Well I was in for a rude awakening. As the service dept took me to my car the employee told me that I should look at getting another car. I said why is that? his answer was your engine is blown and the company wont let us work on them. What! isn't Dodge the maker of this car, why is it that you can't work on the car that your company made. His answer was the company just don't want us to touch them. If that isn't a dead give away on a bs engine what is, can someone please help me on what my rights or what I can do about this?.

15 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2006

My pregnant wife was returning home from taking me to work. In the car with her was my five year old son and two year old niece. While traveling along a rural highway 12 in the northwest of idaho with a posted speed of 55 mph. She felt the car surge or sputter. She became worried and without further warning the car lost power resulting in the lose of power steering and power brakes. She managed to keep the car under control and pulled the car to the shoulder where she tried for several minutes to start the car with out success. Finally, she was able to get the car to start, and continued her trip, not 1 mile down the road this happened again. Luckily she was in front of a house and was able to pull off the highway this time. The property owner was nice enough to let her use the phone were she called me to retrieve the car and get her back home. The car would still not run. This incident upsets me greatly because the safety of my wife son niece and unborn child was put at risk as a direct result of this car which should have plenty of life left. The car is a 1999 Intrepid with 72000 miles problems like this should not happen this early.

16 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2006

I purchased my 1999 Dodge Intrepid from a reputable firefighters in my area in 2004, this person reassured me that this car would be a reliable source of transportation for my family because he'd just put an engine and did other minor work, and showed and provided me with documentation. A year and a half later the car started running real crappy and eventually died. I've taken it to several reputable mechanics who gave me the same bad news that I was going to have to purchase another engine for my vehicle. Not only have I been unable to find this engine for a reasonable price but it seems as though no one wants to do the work on my car because they feel that it's a waist of their time and my money because "these engines are junk". How could this multi-billion dollar company do this us? please help.

17 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2006

We own a 99' Dodge Intrepid that has just today went out on us. It has been smoking for at least 11 months. The car was taken to the dealership continuously and told about the smoking and they kept telling us that they couldn't find anything wrong with the car. Well today something popped really loud and the car cut off in the middle of the road, we were lucky not to be hit. Now the car will not run at all. I do have all of the receipts from where the dealership kept telling us there was nothing wrong with the car.

19 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

I have recently begun the process of leasing a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. 22 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2005

I was driving my 1999 Dodge Intrepid with my 3y. O daughter. We were stopped at a stop light. When the light turned green, I accelerated, and my car began jerking roughly, but there were no interior warning lights on. I continued to try to accelerate, and eventually my "check engine" light came on. I pulled my car into a gas station where it died. I had to have the car towed to my Dodge dealer where I was told the engine had locked up. The dealership wants nearly $8000 to replace my engine. I have been doing some on-line research and telephone researching to find cheaper engines. From all of the people I have spoken to, and from the on-line research I've done, it appears that this is a defective engine that is failing on these cars. We have even weighed the option of having the car sent to the junkyard for scrap, but our local junkyard won't even take it because they say they have too many of these cars already due to the same problem. So far, the cheapest estimat we've had to have the engine replaced is approx $4000 (for a rebuilt engine). This car is only 6 years old, and has been properly maintenanced. This problem needs to be thoroughly investigated. Thank you for your time.

23 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/31/2005

Am writing about a complaint about daimler-Chrysler's 2. 7l engine in my 1999 Dodge Intrepid. The timing change broke at 89,000 miles and ruined the engine. This is an all to common problem with this engine - there are over 17,000 websites about this problem. Daimler-Chrysler is copping out by blaming the consumer for not changing the oil regularly and refusing to do anything about the engine. The customer service rep at daimler-Chrysler told me they were unaware of any problem with this engine. I have spoken to several mechanics, even 2 former diamler-Chrysler mechanics who all say it is due to faulty engine design. Thank you, cyndi jacobi.

24 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2005

(1) driving normally with regular oil changes 3000 miles or less. (2) driving on interstate with infant and self and car seized up and control and brakes went out!!!!! (3) told will need new 2. 7 engine. Seems that it's common knowledge that the 2. 7l engine in the Dodge Intrepid is no good because of oil flow problems. Dodge has so far avoided having to pay for the neglect. Please do something!! thise is seriously dangerous!!!!! I'm a fairly large lady thank goodness. If I had been just a little weaker there would have been no way that I could have stopped that big beast of an Intrepid. The engine just quite on me and the power to the steering and the brakes all were usless. I was on the interstate with my new born son!! even the scdot gentleman on duty knew exactly what happened, he actually told me!!! now if every mechanic and everyone familiar even a little with the Intrepid knows of this problem with the 2. 7l engine in the Dodge Intrepid then why OH why is Dodge not recalling them??? is it all about money again it seems to me they stand to loose far far more in the lost sales of the future for not owning up to their error. It really bothers me that my life and especially my new born sons life is less important to them then this!!! thank you for taking care of this matter.

25 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

I own a 1999 Dodge Intrepid (2. 7l) that is a well-maintained vehicle. The engine of the car has suddenly broke down prematurely right after the warranty period. Chrysler has refused to help. Please make Chrysler take responsibility for this failure and help me with the repair. The vehicle was maintained according to the specification. Chrysler is scamming the public. 29 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2005

I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. This car had 70000 miles, most of them highway miles. The timing chain broke due to excessive oil sludge. This car has had regular 3000 miles oil changes, and I am finding out this was common occurrence with the 2. 7l v6 engine. Now, because of the high demand for these engines ,rebuiling costs are in excess fo $4,000, and a new engine runs around $8,000.

30 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2005

Blown out engine in 1999 Dodge Intrepid.

31 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2005

Was driving 1999 Dodge Intrepid with 66,000 miles on !-4 in florida about 65 mph. The engine, a 2. 7, without warning blew up. I lost power steering and the brakes were hard to use. There was no Dodge dealer in the nearest town. I had to walk to the nearest exit. A Chevrolet dealer replaced the motor for $7100. After researching. I have found this is a common problem with the 2. 7 engine. The car has had regular maintenace. I was lucky that there was a shoulder to pull off the road and have room to coast to a stop. Old engine was used as a core. There was no sludge in oil cap. There was no oil light warning.

32 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

34 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/29/2004

During an oil change last Friday at sam leman's Dodge in peoria, IL I was told that the oil plug retention threads in the oil pan are stripping and I was told that I have to get a new oil pan during my next oil change for my 1999 Dodge Intrepid. This is unacceptable. I don't know all the intricate details about the designs and manufacturing of Dodge, but I would tend to think that the threads should last for longer than 30 times of screwing and unscrewing of the oil plug. So, far this vehicle had less than 30 oil changes. Hence, this problem is unacceptable. I was told that itwould cost me close to $300 to get this fixed. Thanks !.

35 Engine And Engine Cooling problem
