Engine Belts And Pulleys problems of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid - part 1

The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 35 mph, the driver heard a loud knocking sound coming from the engine compartment in the vehicle. I have changed the oil in the vehicle regularly every 3-4 thousand miles, then on Sunday the timing belt tensioner went out and now the repair shop tells me I need a new engine and it's due to the tensioner failing from a sludge build up. I have since found this is very common to the 2. 7l engine. Now the repair estimate is between five and six thousand dollars.

In taking it to the mechanic, I found that the 2. 7 engine was the worst one Chrysler has made and was a "disposible" engine. My windows do not work, and my fan (air/heat) only works on high. On may 3, 2007, the engine shut off again. Two sensors were replaced and the cost of the repairs were $1900. 00. On may 4, 2007, the engine shut off. The vehicle was towed and the dealer stated that the engine needed to be replaced. The dealer also stated that the cost was $7000. 00 and the water pump caused the engine to fail. The failure and current mileage were 96,800. The dealer stated the vehicle needed rear shocks and the shocks were repaired at time of service. The consumer provided the repair invoice for vehicle. The ater pump failed which caused damage to the engine. Updated 06/13/07.

I heard a knocking noise. So I took it back to the place I had my oil changed at, as I was turning into the the side street a belt broke. After my car sat for three nights on the parking lot of this business, it was then towed to the shope. It was then I was informed that I was not the first person who has had sludge build upthis. Engine needs to be replaced, due to sludge build up. My car is now sitting in my drive way, because I can not afford to pay 5,000 + to have my car fixed. I have no car to drive back and forth to school. Now I feel so disquestedwhen I think about this car. I think Chrysler should at least give me half, considering they were aware of this problem.

Chrysler takes no responsibility, states it is a user issue. Documented problem with Chrysler technicians, yet Chrysler will not warranty their product.

On Feb 17 2006 a knocking began under the hood of the car. On Feb 20 2006 the car was taken to sunoco for investigation, the mechanic suggested it was coming from the engine and to have it checked out ASAP. On Feb 21st the car cut off while driving down the street. I managed to drive the car to a midas shop, the mechanic told me there were many problems with the engine in my car model. The car sat at the midas shop until Feb 23rd when a tow truck took it to an auto shop.

Was stopping at a red light and the engine shut off after a brief damaging noise. I have been told the timing belt blew and destroyed the engine. Vehicle was left on busy roadway with occupants inside until a tow truck could arrive. Police were called to avoid a rear end collision. Every mechanic I have called has recommended replacing the engine. No action has been taken. Too expensive.

In 2001 I bought a Dodge Intrepid 2. 7l. It was service regularly at keystone Chrysler in mission, kansas. In September of 2004 I began to notice that it was running strange so I took it to bud brown Dodge in overland park, KS. I was told that the belt had slipped and it was not possible to tell the extent of the damage unless I allowed them to put a new one on and check the engine pressure. They service manager told me that the chances of the engine being ruined were 50/50. He called the next day to tell me that the engine was ruined and I owed $1,400. I call another Dodge dealership and explained the engine symptoms and asked what my next move should be. The sunflower Dodge tech told me that the 2. 7 was a terrible engine and it would need to be replaced. I asked him if there was any chance that the engine was salvageable and he said no. He was willing to look at it but told me he had seen this over and over with this car. I came clean and told him what had happened with the other dealership and he assured me that they were wrong. He suggested that the tech could be new so I shouldn't assume fraud. He also told me that Dodge was not recalling an engine that they must have known by that time to be defective. I have looked on the internet and he appears to be correct.

While making a right turn power steering failed. Consumer was unable to steer the vehicle, and had it towed to the dealer for inspection. Mechanic determined that idler pulley bearing deteriorated and steering pump failed.

While driving 25 mph consumer heard a noise coming from under vehicle, and vehicle stalled. Consumer pulled vehicle over to inspect under hood, and found that timing chain cracked.

While driving at approximately 65 mph vehicle completely shut down. There were no brakes, nor power steering, and vehicle coasted to a stop. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and was told that the vehicle needed a new engine.

While driving vehicle stalled. Consumer tried to restart vehicle but was unable to do so. Vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the timing belt broke due to sludge build up inside of the engine,and the engine needed to be replaced.

While driving home my 1999 Dodge Intrepid with 80,000 mile on a 2. 7 started making a rattleing noise in the engine. Engine quit in traffic shortly after and I barely avoided an accident. Had car towed to a repair shop where mechanic diagnosed timing chain tensioner failure which resulted in bent valves and major internal damage to engine. Stated engine would have to be replaced at an estimate of $4,800. Stated that so many 2. 7 Dodge engines are faulty and breaking down that it is impossible to find a used 2. 7 engine in a scrap yard.

The engine failed at 15,000 miles. The timing belt "jumped," and the engine was replaced. The cooler lines leaked as well.

While driving at 40 mph consumer heard a loud bang then the vehicle lost power steering and brakes. As a result the vehicle hit a curb and came to a complete stop. The dealership indicated that the timing belt broke which caused the loss of power.

Dealer said that the timing chain had broken and warped the valves (everyone of them) and that they would have to be replaced. I have a 1999 Chrysler interpid with 82,000 miles. The vehicles has maintained. The timing belt broke while I was driving on the freeway at 70mph. I heard a terrible noise and immediately pulled off the freeway and called a towing company. The engine repair shop repaired the timing belt and also did major cleaning in the engine because of an excessive amount of black sludge. Initially accusing me of never changing the oil. The shop had the car running again and did one last cold start checking fluid levels which were found to be normal. My car was then taken on a test drive first at freeway speeds and then through town and on the way back to the shop the vehicle died. No engine light came on prior to the engine dying. The car was towed back to the shop and the engine was found to be seized. I recieved an estimate from them at about $7,000. I wanted a 2nd opinion so I had the car towed to a Dodge/Chrysler dealership and they diagnosed the engine as being seized and I recieved an estimate of $7,700. I contacted the Chrysler corporation and was immediately told there was nothing they could do to help me and that they hoped that I would give them another chance in the future to restore faith in their product. In researching for a rebuilt engine we were told by engine supply companies that this problem is very common in this car and that it was not recommened to put a rebuilt engine in the car because of the sludge buildup. Two different places have told me that this is a common problem using pennzoil and told me never to use it again.

In the fall of 2001, we bought a certified used car from continental auto mall. It is a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. A service agreement on the car was also purchased. The following has thereafter taken place: the timing chain idler broke in March of 2002. Continental fixed the car under service agreement. 67 miles later, the car died with my daughter and wife 7 miles from home. It had to be towed back to continental auto mall. We asked what happened and were told that the oil pump screen was plugged up. We asked from what and they said from the fibers from the timing chain idler. From my father's limited experience in mechanic work, the oil pump screen being clogged from fibers from the chain idler meant that the engine was not flushed. So for 67 miles after the timing chain was repaired, these fibers were going through the engine eventually clogging the oil pump screen. The oil pressure must have become so low that a safety switch shut off the engine. We were told that the safety switch shut the engine off so that the low pressure wouldn?t further damage the engine. Repairs were again made by continentals shop. Until these two incidents, we were very happy with the car. After we got the car back after the engine shut off, this is what we noticed: 1. The engine didn?t seem as quiet when running. 2. It needed a quart of oil the first week. 3. Between oil changes, we had to add oil 2-3 times. Before it had never used any oil. Other than adding oil, we didn?t have any problems until the power steering belt idler broke the 2nd week in August of 2003. Our mechanic, john rickman of john?s auto in girard, showed us the bracket from the idler. The bracket is a five-bolt bracket, which had only two bolts in it, and you can see where those two bolts have been working. On August 20, 2003, I parked the car at a flower shop in girard. I came back to the car to go home and the car wouldn?t start.

Mechanic began to disassemble motor and found a black sludge inside engine - said it looked as if the motor oil had never been changed. This vehicle has been properly maintained. I was then informed the motor would need to be replaced. I have contacted several mechanics for repair estimates - which range from $4500. 00-$7000. 00. One person I spoke with said that a "jasper" replacement motor was available that has fixed the design problem with the oil. I am trying to find information regarding this motor. From the website I was reviewing, Intrepid. Clan-510. Org this sludge is a problem not typically encountered, but it seems to be more common with the Intrepid. Another motor replacement business, I contacted, said they were getting requests for the 2. 7 liter motor every day and said repairs would be $7000. 00.
