I had to replace the engine on my 1999 Dodge engine in 2007. The engine failed and the dealer who replaced the engine said it was due to oil sludge. I subsequently found out that the problem is due to a design problem with the car. And the 2. 7 liter engine.
I bought this car used in 2002. After a minor accident and repair at the body shop, the engine failed on a busy four lane road with three of us in the vehicle, one of which was our two year old son. After calling mechanics and Dodge service shops, we were told that the timing chain needed replaced, and the cost would be anywhere from 1500 to 2500 dollars. We paid for and my husband replaced almost the entire top half of then engine. This has taken a very long time, as parts are expensive, and time to work on the car is limited. After finally getting the engine running, the engine again failed. This time it was on a major interstate highway while we were in the left lane. We only barely managed to pull the car off the road before being hit by the semi's on the road. After having it towed home, now the engine is shot again, and the estimated diy cost for us is more than $2000. We still owe that much on the car.

1999 Dodge Intrepid engine failure.
First engine failed at 84367 miles on 03/18/03 and was covered by extended warranty. Rebuilt long block was installed. Second engine has now failed in September of 2006 with 154004 miles on the car. Less than 70,000 miles on the second engine. Timing chain has failed and is sticking through the valve cover. All of a sudden started rattling and then just died. It seems as if these engines are only good for 70-80k and they are done.
: the contact stated the engine failed while driving 40 mph. The vehicle did not have any problems prior to the failure. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop who determined the engine needed to be replaced due to oil sludge in the engine. The vehicle had an oil change two weeks prior to the incident.

1999 Dodge Intrepid, engine failure.
1999 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7l engine failed due to engine sludge. Only had 47,000. No warning. Just would not start. Had it towed to garage and told the engine is blown. Just like thousands of other with the exact same story. Have been very diligent about maintenance especially since hearing about this problem from a CO-worker whose engine blew at 70,000. Had read the average is 63,000. I only had 47,000. Took a chance that with good maintenance it wouldn't happen to me. - I lost. Hope the good people (they know who they are) at Chrysler are sleeping well. I feel sorry for anyone who works for them because they are being made to lie to consumers to cover for their employer.

After that the engine light stayed on and the car died on the side of the road. Chesterfield Dodge told me I had experienced complete engine failure and could do nothing about it except replace the engine for 5500. 00 plus install. It is sitting there now waiting to be towed and scrapped. The motor is 2. 7l/v6.

I'm still waiting on their estimate to fix this as they can't get to it for several days. In the meantime I am out of a vehicle. I've sent a customer complaint to Chrysler and have not received a response from them.

I am writing to try to get some information on any action I can take against Chrysler for my engine failure. I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with around 81,000 miles on it. I recently was deployed between late October through January. Soon after leaving, my car engine began knocking very badly and the engine quit while my wife was driving. This occurred while she was traveling with our 3 children?including a new born?. At around 45 mph. After getting a ride back to our house my wife contacted the local Dodge dealer and was informed that the engine was shot and that one of the rods had gone. They also explained that the only fix was a new engine. Which varied in price from $3200. 00-$9000. I have been told the same excuse by several people also that it was my fault and that I was probably not changing the oil as required. Since this was our only form of transportation I had to return from my deployment to assist my family. Now I feel that since this is a known problem Chrysler should have to finally accept their failure and do something about it. I would appreciated and assistance and information for who or where I need to contact. I have already contacted a local news agency and they requested that I contact them back and let them knw if I do get assistance or not so that they can get involved. I request an expeditious reply to this situation. Thank you. Angelo rodriguez.
