Had no issues with vehicle, until about 03/20/12,the oil light came on, which was odd. I checked the oil, found it was completely empty, put 2 quarts in immediately, light went off. I started checking driveway daily for signs of oil leaking even though the car drove fine. 03/28/12, car stalled, went completely dead, as I exited freeway, leaving myself and my 3yr. Old stuck in lane on off ramp for about 30 minutes. A passerby attempted to jump it,that didn't work, car had no power at all,we pushed it to a safer spot. I walked 2 blocks home. Came back next day, jumped it,it started but now there was a knocking sound coming from engine and oil light was back on. I checked the oil it read full,I drove car home it stalled 3 times in the 2 blocks home. Knocking sound continued I parked the car. The next day I took the car to my mechanic the oil light was still on the engine was still knocking. He checked oil again and confirmed the car did have oil,and detected no signs of leaking. He ran a diagnostic on engine, it detected no issues,he ran it again, and the results where the same. He drove the car,me in the passengers seat so he could get a hear the knocking sound when car was moving. Backed out of lot driving about 10 to 12 mph, we got maybe half a block and the car went dead. He was able to guide car to side of road, when he pressed the brake to put the car in park, there was a barely audible bursting sound. We got out and found a thick black muddy type substance gushing out of the bottom from the front end, leaving a puddle the length and width of car. He immediately identified it as oil sludge, and said my engine had blown. We discussed my options and ultimately I had to have the car towed home it hasn't started.

On August 18, 2006 I was driving my 1999 Dodge Intrepid with the 2. 7 engine and it made a knocking sound under the hood and then the engine cut out. My husband towed it home and replaced sensors, plugs, air filter, and other things. The car still wuldn't start. Talking to a friend who is a mechanic he informed us that more than likely our engine was blown. He said it is quite common in the 1999 Intrepid's with the 2. 7 engines. He said Chrysler knows that there is a problem but chooses to do nothing about it. He also said that oil shops have disclaimers up stating that they are not responsible for oil sludge build-up in the 1999 Intrepid's with the 2. 7 engine. We were told that "if" we could get an engine it would be over $4500. 00 and that they were far and few between. You can't get a rebuilt engine because you will end up the same problem. I have notified Chrysler and they are "researching" the problem. I don't expect any help from them as I bought the car used but it is sad that this is the second Dodge product that I have had with problems. I previously owned an 89 Dodge grand caravan with the "lemon transmission. " needless to say my next car will not be a Chrysler product.

Purchased the 1999 Dodge Intrepid on Sep 16, 2005 the car had 77,823 miles . Before purchasing the car I did run a car fax on the vehicle and took it to goodyear and had an 11 point check before purchasing the vehicle. The car came with a warranty. Nov 26, 05 when the car started a loud knocking noise and immediately shut down. All the oil ran on the ground. It was 10:30 p. M. . We, my daughter and two grandchildren were on a dark parkway the wrecker service took us to a hotel. 1:10 a. M. (cst) when we got to the hotel in elizabethtown. I had to pay someone to come from frankfort to elizabethtown. It only had approximately 3000 miles on it from the time of purchase. I then had it towed back to frankfort (93. 03) the warranty company sent the engine but I was still out of $412. 00 which was the difference of the claims about for labor of $450. 00. During the time I was waiting for my vehicle to be fixed I search the internet and found out there was one thing I did not check at the time of purchase and that was the engine. I found a lot of articles posted that claimed the 2. 7 liter engine to be one of the worst Chrysler had made. They had the car from November 30 until January 25th. . I did have to purchase an additional extended warranty (150. 00) so that I could make sure I was still covered while the car was being fixed. The original warranty at the time of purchase was 4500 miles or 90 days which ever comes first. That warranty expired on 12/21/05. This motor only lasted 81,000 miles. The current engine now is a rebuilt I pray that I get more than 81,000 miles on it.

I have a 1999 2. 7l Dodge Intrepid that is currently being investigated for possible warranty denial on an engine failure. We had a sensor replaced in November 18 2003 along with an oil change and a transmission change. After this service through the Dodge dealership in our area we noted that the oil light was flickering whilst idling and when the engine was warm. We were assured that it was just a sensor issue and they promptly checked the oil level a month ago to assure us the oil was still in the engine. The engine began ticking at high speeds and had continued to get worse. The engine has a loud knocking noise that is predominent as soon as I turn on the engine. In order to not risk the safety of my two young children we had the vehicle towed to the dealership. They have now concluded that there was sludge in the engine and that an inspector will need to determine if the extended warranty or the basic warranty that is still affective will cover the costs. Upon reading sites on this vehicle it is almost predetermined that they will refuse to cover the cost under our warranty. What rights do we have if this happens? we still owe money on the vehicle and cannot afford the rental and the cost to repair the vehicle. And if Chrysler is aware of this issue surely this should have been a problem that the local dealership could have determined before our engine became damaged?.
While driving at any speed consumer heard a ticking and knocking sound coming from the engine. Dealer claimed that the problem was the pistons and a new engine was needed.
