I was on my way to work & my car started to make a clicking noise. I have always taken great care of this car! I was concerned, but I was on the highway so there wasn't a place to pull over! I was only about 20 min to town & thought I could get there to check this out. I was on a stretch of the highway that the only exit is another major highway. All of the sudden the car went from 65 mph to 0 mph. I was driving during rush hour traffic with cars speeding by me! the cars behind almost ran into me! I managed to get the car pulled over on the narrow shoulder. I was terrified to get out of my car due to all the speeding traffic and on the other side was such a narrow space between the car and the median. I called for a tow truck so I could get it to our mechanic. The mechanic shop said that the engine was dead/ locked up. It only had 81k miles on it! I have done an extreme amount of research of the 2. 7l engine that Chrysler put in my 1999 Dodge Intrepid. The engine is defective! it is the poor construction of this engine that is causing it to sludge up causing it to lock up all the sudden, leaving you with a car you can't drive! I have had an oil analysis done on my oil, several things that were found concerned them, but the one thing that is prominent is that there was moisture/ water in the oil. It is alarming that there are so many consumers that have had this exact problem, and there's no recall on this engine! due to the moisture causing it to "sludge up & die" I think if one of the cars behind me would have hit my car (like they almost did) then I could've been pushed in to traffic and seriously hurt. This was a terrifying experience. I don't want this to happen to another person. I feel that this is a severe safety issue & somebody needs to address this matter soon! I am not able to afford another engine & installation at this time (priced at about $6k+). I own a car that I can not drive. It's Chrysler's fault putting this engine in, not mine.
Dodge Intrepid 2. 7l motor failed in oiling system. While driving on freeway, oil light came on. Pulled over and there was tapping sound. Motor has est 65,000 miles on it. Towing to dealer, the dealer reported the motor is totaled and needs to be replaced. This was during our vacation, and the car is now over 1,500 miles from home. We have not resolved with the dealer how to dispose of the car.
: the contact stated the vehicle's engine abruptly stopped working after hearing clunking noises while driving 35 mph on a normal road condition. After a few minutes of driving, the engine stalled and could not be restarted. The vehicle was taken to the dealership for repair who determined that the engine needed to be replaced.
: the contact stated while traveling 45 mph, the engine began to make a clanking noise and then stalled. The vehicle was pulled over and towed to an independent mechanic. The mechanic determined the timing chain fractured because of oil sludge in the engine. The engine was rebuilt.
: the contact stated while traveling at various speeds, the cruise light illuminated and the tachometer dropped then the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was coasted to the side of the road and after 15 minutes would restart. The dealership determined the crank sensor needed to be replaced. After this was replaced, the engine made a clunking noise, and the vehicle has not been driven off of the lot.
: the contact stated while driving at 10-20 mph there was a clanking noise coming from under the hood and the check engine light illuminated. The contact pulled off of the road. The vehicle was towed to a dealership, where they determined the engine had failed due to oil sludge, and needed to be replaced. The contact noticed numerous complaints on the internet concerning the 2. 7 engine on these vehicles. Updated 06/05/2006.
The contact owns a 1999 Chrysler Intrepid. While driving approximately 40 mph she heard a clicking noise. She parked the vehicle for inspection. Upon inspection she noticed that the timing chain had fractured. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, and he concluded that the timing chain and possibly the engine needed to be replaced. The timing chain was previously replaced. No repairs were made. . The failure mileage was 103,000. The current mileage was 123,000.
I was driving on the I -5 northbound to oceanside, when I started hearing a clacking/clunking noise from the engine. I pulled in towards the nearest gas station and checked the oil levels for the car, which were fine. I drove another 2 miles and started to exit the freeway when a total power loss to the engine occurred. I managed to recover control of the vehicle, and parked it in a parking lot where it was towed to my place of residence. The next day I had it towed to a mechanic and was told that the engine needed to be replaced. I had just replaced the oil 2,000 miles ago, and was perplexed. The oil light had been on intermittently, but oil levels were fine, I was told this was probably due to a failed sensor. I am young and have just started a family, with a newly born infant who could have been involved in an accident. From further research, I have found 1000s of incidents similar to my own concerning the 2. 7 liter engine, and implore Chrysler to recall this engine.
1999 Dodge Intrepid (c. 52. 218) original miles. Driving home from local mall, about 10 minutes into travel, engine began to make a tapping noise. Arrived home about 5 minutes later and shut car off. Contacted a friend who is retired mechanic. He tried to start engine without success, he said the engine had complete loss of compression. Had vehicle towed to an engine specialist who checked engine thoroughly. He said that due to lack of oil pressure, the cam was not receiving sufficient oil to lubricate the timing chain thus causing it to break and completely ruin the valves and heads in the engine. Cost to repair would either be a complete tear down and machining of the internal parts, $3,400. 00 or putting in a 2002 2. 7 liter Intrepid engine at a cost of $4,500. 00 parts and labor included. Since I still owe $3,300. 00 on this vehicle I could not afford either of these options.
Was driving 1999 Chrysler Intrepid, that I purchased fives months ago, started to hear ticking noise. I pulled over, checked the oil - no warning lights came on - the oil level was fine. Shut the car down a had it towed to mechanic where he said I had a blown engine. Said the 2. 7 l engines were prone to problems and my engine was "all sludged up". I have no running car, owe the bank and am looking and $4,000-6,000 for repairs. No I understand that I am one of hundreds that have experienced this tragedy.
: the contact stated the vehicle was taken to the dealership because a ticking noise was coming from the engine. The dealership determined the engine needed to be replaced.
Was driving 1999 Chrysler Intrepid with 2. 7 v6 engine, began hearing loud clicking noise. Stopped at red light, when light turned green car shut off and would not restart. Had it towed to mechanic, and was informed that engine seized due to excessive oil sludge, metal shavings, and timing chain. All responsible for engine failure. Estimated cost of repair $5,000. Still owe a year of payments on car. Hasn't been operating since August 2005. Can't afford repair. Please contact your state attorney generals office for possible class action lawsuit to recall this defective motor. Daimler-Chrysler should be held liable for ever manufacturing these engines. Have contacted Chrysler in reference to problem and admitted they had other complaints about this. It is currently under investigation.
I have a 99 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7l engine. The car has @ 79,000 miles. The engine started making a loud clanging noise while I was driving it. The engine did not make any other noises prior to its failure. I immediately pull over and had the car towed to a dealer. The dealer told me I will need a new engine at a cost of $6,400.
I drove the car to work and it worked fine. I finished my shift at work and when I tried to start the car to pick up my three kids I turned the key in the car made a clicking noise. It did this about five of six times. I had to tow the car to a dealer and get it checked out. They said the engine locked up and it would cost 4500 dollars to replace it. Plus the 75 dollars to check the car. The car still sits outside the service center at the dealership. All oil changes were done on time as required. We have to use one car for shuttling the kids to daycare and for two different shifts of work between me and my wife.
While driving, the consumer heard a tapping noise and stopped at a red light. The consumer proceed to drive for about 5 minutes or a mile in distance. The consumer drove to an intersection and the engine died. The tapping noise stopped after a loud noise. The consumer was unable to restart vehicle. He had to push the vehicle to the side of the road out of way and called for tow truck. The vehicle was towed home. A mechanic came by to check the vehicle and he suggested the bearing in the bottom of the motor broke. No repairs have been made as of yet. Suggested replacement for an engine costs $3,500.
I had a 99 Dodge Intrepid. My car was having problems with the oil and we believed there to be a leak because it would never hold oil very long before the tank would be bone dry. But even after taking it to a mechanic we could not find a leak. In March was driving back into town when my car broke down. It started making a really loud clunking noise like the engine was about to fall out. After having it towed home a mechanic looked at it and said that the engine had gone out and I needed a new one. I ended up having to file bankruptcy due to the fact that the car was only worth $3000 or so and it would have cost more than that to fix it and that I was already $4000 upside down. However, I am about to be sued by the credit union that I had the loan for my car on due to them losing so much money on it.
Ticking noise coming from my 1999 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7l engine, garage says it's a rod bearing going bad and the engine will seize up. Car is not payed off and the serviceman says it will cost approx. $2500. 00 for a used engine. What good would it do to put a new engine in and have the same thing happen to that one. I have the car at the garage yet because they are waiting to hear from me on what action they should take. I could put 90 wt. Oil into the engine and trade it, but that would make me just as bad as Chrysler for ignoring the problems with the 2. 7.
Engine started making a ticking noise. Lost power and seized up due to oil sludge.
Vehicle was going at 70 mph when unexpectedly the driver heard a clicking noise coming from the engine. Results showed there was metal inside which caused it to blow, and no longer operate.
Comer was driving 50 mph and heard a clicking sound, and the motor stalled, vehicle lost power steering, and all the lights in the dashboard just lit up. Consumer called a tow truck and had the vehicle taken to a service center. Mechanic indicated that the engine locked up. There was plenty of oil in the engine. Consumer was told that the engine needed to be replaced. The service engine soon (ses) light did not illuminate to warn there was a problem with the engine.
While driving between 45-50 mph, suddenly there was a clicking/tapping noise coming from the engine, followed by the vehicle starting to lose power. The consumer immediately pulled over to the side of the road and had the vehicle towed to a repair shop. The engine blew because it threw a rod bearing.
Several problems with my 1999 2. 7 liter Intrepid. First, problems with transmission shifting hard. Sent to dealer and diagnostics came back 'within parameters'. Told it must be how we drive it. Since then, transmission would not shift between 2/3 gears. Left me stranded out of town. Had to replace the control module twice ($35. 00 part). Keep a spare in the glove box just in case. Second problem, a clunking sound and ticking noise when turning steering wheel in either direction. Took to an independent repair shop, they wouldn't touch it. Have not had this problem corrected or seen by dealer. However, I have seen many TSB's on your website concerning this issue. Third, engine starting making a banging sound at about 126k. Had to have the engine replaced (bought a remanufactured engine) at a cost of $5000. 00, was told something in the bottom end went. Couldn't afford to buy new car and have car payment. Only had 6 more payments to go. Was also told that this was common with these engines. Why is this engine still on the market if it has soooo many problems?.
After parking the vehicle, the consumer heard a clanking noise while the engine was still running. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic for inspection. The mechanic determined that the engine needed to be rebuilt. Sludge build up problem.
Consumer heard a clicking noise while driving. The next day, after parking the vehicle, it would not start. Took vehicle to a mechanic, and the mechanic determined that engine blew out.
On October 31, 2003 my daughter was driving my Intrepid on the freeway near canton, michigan. Upon pressing the accelorator the engine hesitated, then the oil light flashed on for one second just before she heard a popping sound. Then she lost all power. She could not steer or brake the car very well at all. She was going 65 miles per hour and nearly got into a serious accident. She got the car onto the shoulder but could not start the engine. We had it towed to a service station where they told me the engine was seized and it would cost $5,000 to $6500 to repair. It has been only 3000 miles since my last oil change.
At 99,500 miles the engine blew, oil had just been changed the day before when the engine began making a low ticking noise which quickly turned into a loud knocking. I had the car towed to a shop where they stated that it appeared that for some reason the car had lost oil pressure and no oil was getting to the engine. The engine would have to be replaced for a cost of at least 6000 dollars.
Purchased vehicle with approxiametely 500 miles. Since buying the car we have had it in for repairs at the dealer 8 times. All repair are to engine and chips in the engine. The most recent, driving down the expressway 60 mph the car shut off. Put in neutral and started the car back up. When car started back up there was a loud ticking noise in the front. Then the car shut off 3 more time and on the fourth stall would not start back up. When towed to repair shop he indicated the engine would need to be replaced (oil just changed and full). When calling arond for new engine all dealers indicated thoughs engines are very hard to find because everyone is looking for them because a blown engine is a common problem with Intrepids. I hope there are more complaints reported so this problem is resolved. I know of 3 Intrepid in my area that have the same problem.
At about 60,000 miles I notice a ticking sound in the engine I took it in to the local Dodge dealership and it was determined to be a lower bearing noise that would ultimately ruin the engines. As the noise got worse I feared driving it anymore . My maintenance contract did not cover engine cost but only affected bearings and this would not be covered by any dealer or manufacture warranty. I subsequently replaced the engine with a used engine which lasted one year and left me stranded beside the road requiring a tow and my vehicle has sat for 2 years with the cost of engine replacement almost doubling. I think an engine recall is in order as I have experienced several; people stopping to ask if the Intrepid is for sale because they have one with a bad engine.
Vehicle stalled at 30 mph. Prior to this, there was a ticking noise coming from engine for a period of 4 weeks. Dealer determined that engine needed to be replaced due to oil sludge. Oil had turned to hard sludge that had to be hammered off the engine.
There was a clicking noise coming from the vehicle, the engine stalled, however it was restarted.
While driving consumer heard a clicking noise. Consumer believed it was the engine. Also, oil light illuminated.
