29 problems related to gasoline engine have been reported for the 1999 Dodge Intrepid. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
On a trip last week it started skipping and quit running on the expressway, we waited about 30 minutes and it started running again. After running about 100 miles it did it again 4 more times.
1999 2. 7 liter engines used by Dodge fail without warning. This leaves people exposed to high speed traffic on freeways. It also leaves the disabled vehicle on the roadside until it's towed. This makes the vehicle a danger to all that pass by it. The failure rate of these specific engines is excessive. The ntsb should insist that Dodge make an effort to remedy the problem. Dodge has ignored the issue and blamed their customers. Dodge has decreased the margin of safety on our roadways by producing vehicles prone to failure.
While driving engine started to knock, then suddenly lost power and engine died. Cylinder compression test showed the following cylinder ratings 0-0-15-30-70-100. In the process of replacing engine at a cost of $2000. 00 plus labor cost. VIN 2b3hd46r7xh687358.
1999 Dodge Intrepid driving to pick up my children for week end visitation, normal driving conditions, suddenly started to knock then before I could find a wide spot to pull over it stopped all together and locked up. Oil new and all maint, was performed religiously. I understand this is a common problem and Chrysler needs to do something about this.
Vehicle, a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with 83000 miles died twice while driving on a highway. First incident on 12/25/04. Vehicle was towed to garage where my mechanic said 3 of the plugs were fouled due to catalytic converters being bad. Cats were replaced in late may after vehicle was off the road for 5 months. Second incident happened on 6/7/05. Same problem, vehile just died on highway. I understand that there is a history of this problem due to engin oil sludge buildup. Is this true? is it also true that chrystler is doing nothing about the problem?.
I own a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7 litre engine. As I was on my way to work the car began making serious noise. I pulled over and had it towed home. It has not run since. My mechanic says there is no compression in the #5 piston. I do not have the money to replace it.
Rod was thrown in engine, due to sludge build-up, it has had regular oil changes.
I bought this car from my mother which owned the car for little over a year. Oil changes and maintenence was on a regular schedule. On my way home from work about a week ago as I was changing lanes the engine suddenly locked up taking away my brakes and power steering and locking up the transmission while doing about 60 mph on the highway changing lanes. I was lucky to avoid a major accident and was able to slide to the side of the road.
I bought a used 1999 Dodge Intrepid 10-01-03 with 74570 miles. In February 2005 the oil light started coming on when I came to a complete stop. I contacted Dodge and was told there might be a sludge problems and they could try to correct it but would make no promises. I contacted rt clapp where they said that they could work on the car but with that engine it would be better if I could trade it. I would be pouring money down the drain. I called jasper engines and they said they made many rebuilt engines for the 2. 7 model and that would be 4200. 00. I have read on several websites that this 2. 7 engine has many safety issues. I am disabled and cannot afford to trade the car. I am terrified to drive it and it has been sitting in my driveway for over a month now. If I were driving it and it seized up on my I am afraid I would have a heart attack. One if my disabilities is congestive heart failure. I only put 6800 miles on this car in the 18 months that I have owned it. The engine has not failed yet but the oil light coming on when coming to a stop when the oil is full is one of the first indications that the engine is about to go. I wanted to lodge my complaint against Chrysler for making a bad engine and not doing anything about it to protect the safety of the cars owners. Driving on the interstate and having the engine blow is one day going to make a hugh accident but it will not be me because I am too terrified to ever drive this car again and could not try to sell a lemon to another individual.
While driving my Dodge Intrepid home the engine quit causing me to pull over to the side of the road with no steering and very little braking. I was able to jump start the engine and begin my trip home again. The engine quit again and had trouble steering car off the road with also no brakes. Now the engine will not start due to being locked up. I have changed the oil regularly and maintained the car in good condition. I have had to replace the transmission sensors at 50,000 miles due to failure. The manufacturer service mechanics knew exactly what the problem was when described over the phone about the transmission and the engine. The transmission had a failure again at 100,000 miles. This is terrible for a 99 model car that has only a 100,000 miles. The engine is locked up and now I have no transportation to travel back and forth to work. I have more problems with this car since I bought it.
I was driving on an errand to tucson arizona which is 65 miles from my home. I stopped at a stop light and the car engine died on me in the middle of a busy intersection without even a warning light coming on. I do regular maintanence on the vehicle, and do predrive checks on the vehicle before I go on long distance trips. The dealership where I bought the vehicle used from told me it would cost $6300 to replace the engine. I do not have $6300 to replace an engine in a vehicle worth about $7000.
Nov. 2004 2. 7l engine in my 1999 Dodge Intrepid failed at 99k. I took the vehicle to crown Dodge to check what the problem was and found that the engine was dead and it had a timing issue. Spoke with an service advisor about some recalls from 2002 and same advised me that my vehicle did not follow the guidelines due to the miliage. Also stated that Dodge would not help me with this problem and that the recommended oil type is a 5w 30 oil and this was the only oil that crown Dodge uses on all oil changes unless other oil is requested. The other problems that contributing to the engine is the oil galley and there was a recall on this in 2002 as well as oil light flickering problem was another recall from Dodge. Very unhappy with my Dodge due to the problems. Jerry gaither,nc.
1999 Dodge Intrepid stops on freeway with almost no warning, just the yellow caution light about 30 seconds before it stops and a noise from the engine. Checked the enginge and there was very little oil. Told the engine needed to be replaced at a cost ot 8,000. I had this car serviced 6,000 mi. Before at the dealer and filled with oil. Have not had it fixed as this is to much money for me to pay to have it fixed.
I had a 1999 Intrepid with only 60 thousand miles on it and it was the 2. 7l engine. The motor locked up and it was left to sit along side the road. The tow bill plus storage fee was in the amout of 4,000 dollars and that didn't count the replacement of the engine (5,000) and the loan amount owed ( 7,000) on the vehicle. The expenses incurred has left me unable to pay and the car remained with the tow company. The vehicle was then sold by the tow company for their fees. Now I'm forced to pay the loan of this vehicle without having it in my possession. This motor should have been recalled by Chrysler, considering all the complaints of failure to this design.
I own a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7 liter engine. The engine has a bad engine at only 55,700 miles. It started knocking really bad and lost all power while on the freeway. I have continued to make the payments and keep up with insurance, while being unable to drive the vehicle or be able to afford to replace the engine.
Purchased a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. The motor blew at only 80,000 miles. This is a vehicle that we depend heavily on as a family vehicle. The car could not be fixed. A new motor was hard to find and the cost of the repairs would be more than the car was worth. We simply could not afford to pay $5,000 to replace a motor. A used motor was not much less expensive because so many owners of the Dodge Intrepid were in the same situation. Because of all this, we were forced to buy another vehicle and we still owed 2 more years on the Intrepid. This experience has definitely made me lose my faith in the Dodge name. As of yet, there has been no effort on the part of Dodge to rectify this situation. Our family has been deeply hurt financially because of this.
1999 Dodge Intrepid 63500 miles oil changes every 3000 miles. Bought used at 49000 miles. The engine is completely blown?.
Purchased a 1999 Dodge Intrepid in 2002, which was a program car and it only had 10,000 miles on it at around 65,000 miles I had to replace the dual overhead cam chains. One year later the engine began to knock and then seized up. This vehicle has been sitting in my yard since 2003. I have all the records in which we had the oil changed every 3,000 miles and the repairs for the timing chains. This vehicle rides nice, drives nice, but the 2. 7 litre engine is a piece of crap and because it is a piece of crap no one wants to work on them and suggest that the vehicle is not worth as much as it would cost to repair it. I feel that the Chrysler corporation should be held accountable for putting such a crappy motor in such a nice vehicle.
Engine completely blown due to oil sludge build up. Dt.
Consumer is reporting sludge build up in a 2. 7l engine. Causes engine to seize while driving at 45 mph. Dealer notified. Feel free to provide any further information.
Engine has gone out on consumer while driving, vehicle was inoperable . Contacted dealer, and the dealer could not find cause of problem.

Several days after having the 3. 2l engine replaced because it blew up due to unexplained oil dissappearance I experienced continued problems with the vehicle. My input and output speed sensor was replaced when my vehicle was in for engine replacement due to rough shifting and surging in low gears and intermittent transmission bump. Vehicle's transmission seemed to work somewhat smoother. Transmission kickdown issue worsened however. Vehicle would need to be driving at 30-35mph or slower for transmission to kick down hard for merging, passing or to enter the freeway or acceleration was poor. Transmission bump still sometimes occured. During acceleration across intersection vehicle began to violently surge back and fourth as vehicle was switching back and fourth between gears. This happened for several seconds, I was ready to kill the ignition but it stopped. I stepped down hard on the accelerator trying to investigate the problem and engine reved but vehicle acelerated very slowly indicating transmission slippage. The slippage only occured once shortly after and could not be duplicated. Dealer was able to duplicate or pull fault code. Dealer is going to perform major transmission overhaul/rebuild at only 33350 miles. Additional lossed time from work because of these continual problems.
I am extremely frustrated and and disatisfied with my Dodge vehicle and the service I have been provided from hayward auto Chrysler-Plymouth-Jeep. Since purchasing the 1999 Dodge Intrepid ES from hayward auto with only 28,000 miles there has been nothing but problems. The vehicle lost 5+ quarts of oil in 2215 miles and the engine blew up shortly after puchasing. I had the oil and filter changed just 2 months prior w/reciept. I just bought the vehicle from the dealer in April 2001. Dealer almost did not replace engine trying to blame me for it's failure. I regularly maintain and inspect my vehicle. There is nothing I could have done to cause this failure and I feel insulted. The transmission began to fail and was overhauled, speed sensor and tourqe converter replaced due to failure. Component fell off of left lower suspension control arm, replaced. Speakers blown, replaced, rear power window fails, replaced. Once, dealer did not seal tranny correctly when brought in for tranny service several months ago and released vehicle with tranny pouring out fluid when I got home. Steering failed twice, steering behavior changed dramatically after each incident. When service advisor called me he told me tire pressure was out of whack. They adjusted the tire pressure the last time it was in! I overheard tech on phone yelling with bad attitude as if I have the problem further insulting me. I talked to the service manager/owner, tried to explain everything I have been through with this vehicle. Mr. Gregory martin didn't let me finish, told me I was lucky and that the engine was not supposed to be replaced, placed the blame on me. " well, you have a new engine?" I have been extremely patient with this car and these people. They should be apologizing to me and thanking me for my patients instead of treating me like I am retarded. I guess you have to buy a BMW to get a decent car and service. I am very dissapointed and let down with this vehicle and then additionally this service.
Please see the letter we have sent to the manufacturer: June 18, 2000. No safety defect listed.
While sitting at a red light and trying to pull out once light changed, vehicle shut completely down without prior warning.

Consumer has notice premature failure of the engine. The dealer has been notified. Nlm.
