5 Engine problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2007

The motor in the 1999 Dodge Intrepid I just bought stop working. I took it to a mechanic and he said the timing chain broke due to a defect. He told me to call Chrysler and ask what they could do to help me. I called them and they said I on my own. I have looked into the a little and found that many people have had the same problems and now there is a lawsuit against Chrysler in new jersey from debra lee herbert. Engines pricing is $2000. 00 to $5000. 00 depending on new or used. Plus the engine places won't warranty this from happening again. Please help.

6 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2007

Catastrophic failure of the engine while driving 65 mph on the ohio turnpike. Told by two different garages that the engine is blown, rod irreparably bent, must be replaced and that this is a well known problem with the 2. 7 engines and that Dodge will do nothing about it. Told by 5 different mechanics to junk it, not to bother replacing it because they'll just have to put another faulty 2. 7 engine in the car. No way this engine should go out in a dangerous situation like highway driving! the car is in my yard right now.

7 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2007

We've only had the car for 10months now and already its a piece of junk. While driving my kids to daycare one day the car just stopped. The steering wheel wouldn't move and the brakes wouldn't work. My husband pulled into a parking lot and put on the emergency brake. He tried to start it up and it wouldn't. He looked under the hood and checked the oil thinking maybe that was the problem. He tried to start it again after he saw there was oil there and the timing chain jump up and broke right threw the covering. We didn't have aaa so his brother called them and had them tow it to a mechanic. That's when we found out the valves were bent causing the motor to be useless. The whole cost of the repairs were an estimate of $3000. We called the finance company and they told us to first call the dealer we bought the car from and they should be able to trade it in for another vehicle. The dealership said it wasn't their problem and that we should have taken the extended warranty. My husband asked why they didn't offer it and they stated they didn't have to. This is very hard on us being that we both work fulltime and have two small children. We can not afford to get this car repaired and keep paying on a car that doesn't serve us any value.

The 2. 7 v-6 exploded/seized in my 1999 Intrepid for the second time in 112k so thats 56k per engine??? Chrysler is of no help and will not cover faulty engine! they say sludge cause it-but I changed oil every 3k! this is ridiculous a recall should be mandatory!!!!!!.

10 Engine problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2007

We have a 99 Dodge Intrepid and at around 80,000 the engine gave out due to sludge buildup even though we had regular oil changes. We had to replace the engine at $5000. 00. While researching the internet, we found that there are websites dedicated to the 99 Intrepid all with the same issue. Why are they not recalled?.

11 Engine problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2007

I bought a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with 86140 miles. Drove 14 miles and oil light came on and noise started. I pulled over, checked engine oil level, and it was full. I towed the vehicle home and there it sits. I found many concerns on the net about the Dodge Intrepid,1999 as a all but 1 test a. S. E technician I pulled the valve covers off and found sludge in areas. I was still wondering if there will be a recall, so I haven't done anything yet.

12 Engine problem

14 Engine problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2006

There were events or warning signs leading up to this event. My daughter and I were driving when all of the sudden my oil pressure light came on, followed by immediate engine shut-down. We almost wreck trying to get the car off the road and stopped. We were stranded in the cold, until my mom could get there to pick us up. After I had my car towed to the shop, and the mechanic diagnosed my problem I was in tears. The mechanic informed me that my engine was blown due to build up of sludge, and yet I change the oil every 3000 miles. He told me it would have to be replaced, and that it would cost anywhere from $4000-8000 to get it back on the road. I am a single mother with a very small income from a part time job, attend college full time, and am trying to raise my 4 year old daughter by myself. There is no way that I will be able to fix this car, nor do I want to so it can do it again so that the exact same thing can happened a few thousand miles later with junk motors. I can not afford to buy a new vehicle, so my daughter and I are on foot. This infuriates me, because the money greedy people at daimler Chrysler would not adhere to the repeated recommendations to recall these motors. It is unbelievable to me that they can act so recklessly and put the lives of many innocent people intentionally in harms ways by ignoring you, me, and the thousands like us. This is ridiculous and they should have to pay for our junk motors as well as some restitution for the serious financial and emotional hardships they have intentionally inflicted upon us. I will never ever buy another Dodge/Chrysler product nor will I allow anyone who will listen to me. I think that we should get everyone to boycott them, and plaster the links to these websites to as many people as possible. They deserve to be warned at the catastrophes that lie in their future. If we get a lawsuit please let me be one of the first to know. I wish everyone of my fellow victims the best of luck with this nightmare.

18 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2006

I am one of hundreds who have had this 2. 7 dohc give out. Dailmer Chrysler says that it is due to neglect but I would say with all the complaints I see on the internet that their is a severe issue that needs to be looked into. It is not just the 1999 2. 7 engine their is a few years after 1999 and before 1999 that I have seen complaints about. We need your help in forcing them to do a recall on them. Yes I purchased the car used but still 98000 miles and motor gives out.

20 Engine problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2006

My 1999 Dodge Intrepid just quit running in traffic on the freeway. The engine apparently has failed and needs to be replaced. This is after over $1,000 in repairs and routine maintenance on it since June 1, 2006. The engine had approx 80,000 miles.

21 Engine problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2006

2. 7 l v-6 Dodge Intrepid: this engine is beyond words to describe a horrible design flaw. The engine's oil light flickers and now the motor produces a noise like the lifters are not getting oil. The high brass of d/c will blame every customer of neglect and oil sludge rather than notice a huge pattern of these 2. 7 v6 cars being bashed by numerous people all having the same problem. The 2. 7 v6 is junk and @ 56+ miles it should not have this problem. I guess I'll post it on ebay like all the other Dodge Intrepids with a blown 2. 7 liter engine. I suggest a google search and just read what others have to say about this crappy built motor. I have actually thought about painting a lemon on each side of this car mentioning my engine troubles within each lemon. I will never own a Dodge again!.

22 Engine problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2006

Went to crank vehicle and the timing chain broke and warped the valves, therefore needing a new engine. Have not done any repairs the car had an extended warranty with fidelity warranty they would not cover because the engine had sludge build up, but not due to poor maintenance.

23 Engine problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2006

Engine started using qt of oil every 1000 mi. When I started hearing something in the motor, I went to the dealer and asked about this they said to use synthetic oil, change oil at no more than 3000 mi. One week later while on a trip going down the interstate highway the engine started knocking. Pulled over and had it towed to a dealer where they charged me to tell me of the death sentence on this engine. I paid them but haven't picked it up yet. They said this was a common problem and that it was my problem. The salvage yard said they already have to many of them and don't need another almost perfectly good Dodge Intrepid. I liked this car a lot and was about to get it repainted and some new wheels on it.

24 Engine problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2006

: the contact stated the oil light illuminated intermittently. After parking the vehicle and returning, the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was towed home. The problem is believed to be a sludge build up around the timing chain. The vehicle has not been inspected.

26 Engine problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2006

I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with the 2. 7 liter engine. About 2 weeks ago while driving down the highway, my car started chugging and then locked up. I was able to at least get it on to the side of the road without causing any accidents. I waited a few minutes and it started and then about 1/2 way down the road it did it again. I had my car looked at and they said I was in need of a new engine.

27 Engine problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2006

1999 Dodge Intrepid ES. Original engine started knocking and was replaced with short block at 50,162 miles. This engine started knocking and was replaced with another short block at 60,310 miles. Now this engine is knocking at 90,413 miles and Chrysler will not stand behind it with any warranty. They have quoted me a price of between $5,200 and $5,700 to fix this problem. Each of these times car was not drivable and had to be towed in to be fixed. This final time the car had to be towed home because Chrysler would not stand behind the problem.

29 Engine problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2005

Proper maintenance, all records present. Engine started knocking, dealership says need new engine. It's only 65k miles!! car is dangerous to drive cause engine may fail anytime and I get out of control on highway. Car parked. Contacted Chrysler - no help. Worst part - all dealers know, but nobody does anything!!! found thousands of complaints on the internet, which leads me here. Haven't done any repairs yet. From what I see on internet - engine replacement is a bad option, same engine still fails to soon and unexpectedly!.

30 Engine problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2005

99 Dodge Intrepid shut off while driving. Almost, caused an accident. Handle bar became hard to turn. Now I'm been told I need a new motor. The motor on the car is a 2. 7 l with 83,000 miles on it. Oil change has been done every 3,000 miles. Please help do something about this default on these models. Thank you.

31 Engine problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2005

Oil light comes on at idle. Vehicle only has 115,000 miles on it and in my experience that is a little premature on a car that has had all its maintenance on it since it was new. I am the second owner but I got it from my father in law as a wedding gift.

32 Engine problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2005

At 1145 am, 29 November 2005, I was driving on interstate 675 at about @ 65 mph, when the engine suddenly, without any prior warning, just quit. I made my way across one lane of traffic to the shoulder and came to a complete stop. Attempts to restart was unsuccessful. Initially, it was thought that the car was out of gas (guage indicated 1/4 of a tank. I called a tow truck and ask that they bring gas. After putting 1 gal of gas in the tank, repeated attempts to start were unsuccessful. The car was towed to dave dennison Dodge, col glen highway, dayton, OH. The agent call me at @ 630pm, 29 November 2005, and informed me that they were investigating the problem. But as of that moment, there were computer codes (cam: p0340, crank: p0320), and that in order to start the car, these sensors would have to be changed. I authorized this service, and on 30 November 2005 @ 200pm, the agent informed me that they were unable to start the engine, and that it was defective, and not a candidate for rebuild. Estimated cost of a new engine $7,000 dollars. Also, they have billed me for the replacement of the sensors, $350. 00 estimated. After review of all available info on the internet, it appears there is a history of problems with this engine. On 14 Dec 05, crysler's agent, impartial services, made a office of $650. To settle this account. It was not accepted. The complaint was entered into the database: 01 December 2005.

35 Engine problem

Failure Date: 10/28/2005

Contact states while driving to work one morning a light came on. After turning the car off and then back on the light goes off then back on again. The vehicle has been taken to the dealership twice. Both times they told her it was her engine. The dealership refuses to repair the vehicle under warranty because they say it's a manufacturer problem. Updated 11/29/2005 -.
