37 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2004

We have a 1999 Intrepid with the 2. 7 liter engine which failed at approximately 72,000 miles. We bought the vehicle used in feburary 2002 with 22,000 on it. We had the vehicle in several times for issues with the transmission, heat and air. We found out too late that all these problems are the first sign of engine failure. While driving we heard a slight knock in the engine and even though the oil had just been changed 1500 miles before we pulled in and had it changed again (no one ever mentioned too little oil and the state of the oil being removed in the two years we owned it). About 20 miles after having the oil changed the knocking got louder. We were on a highway doing 60 mph and were coming up to a place we could pull off but the engine died before we could get off the road nearly killing my husband, 12 month old son and myself. The quotes for a new engine are in the range of $4000 to $5000 and the blue book on the car is only $3500 (with a running engine). We've had to default on the load since we had to buy a new car and even the finance company won't pick it up because it's not worth enough to take to auction. When we contacted Chrysler we were simply told that the vehicle was out of warranty and it was our problem now.

39 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2004

Engine failure, 1999 2. 7 liter Dodge Intrepid. Car maintained and oil and filters changed at 3500 mile intervals. While driving at low speed, car knocked and began to tap. Took car to local Dodge dealer (hamilton Chrysler) and I was told I had complete engine failure and it would be undrivable, $6900 for a new long block + labor. I understand there is a major problem with these engines which needs to be addressed.

40 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2004

Engine failure. Sludge related on well maintained 2. 7 liter engine.

41 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2004

Our 1999 Dodge Intrepid suddenly experienced engine failure while traveling on an interstate highway in July 2004 at 60mph. Our car has just over 65. 000 miles. Our car was towed to the dealership and determined to have failed due to sludge build-up in the engine. Our car was well cared for and the oil and filters chagned every 3000 miles (or less). The estimated repair was +$7500. 00 to replace the engine, as the original was not salvagable. We recently received a recall notice from Dodge regarding a transmission recall, but can't have the repair performed because the car isn't driveable. Luckily my husband was able to safely maneuver the car to the shoulder of the highway without injury or damage.

42 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2004

Our 1999 Dodge Intrepid engine failed 6-30-04 we had antifreez in the engine so sludge stoped the car I have my oil change reciepts and took very good care of this car we did not spend 7,500 to repair. This problem and now I see others have had same engine sludge issues.

43 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2004

2. 7 liter Intrepid engine failed at 115,000 miles due to oil sludge build-up, which caused a lower rod bearing failure. Engine was well maintained and oil was changed every 3000-4000mi (less than the owner's manual recommendation of 7,500).

45 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2004

My wife was driving along with my diabetic mother and our 11 month old son to the louisville airport *3 hours away* to pick up her family, who was flying in for a visit. Without warning the motor blew. They were lucky enough to have a state trooper happen along who gave them a ride back into town, *they only made it approximately 25 miles from home*. We only had the car for 5 months and had never had any problems with it, nor any indications something was going to happen. The car has approximately 80,000 miles on it, and I realize it is passed it's "36000 mile warranty" but with all the engine failures this 2. 7 has had it is shameful! I am just grateful the state police came by when he did, as it was a hot day out, and they were on the cumberland parkway, meaning no where to walk to for help.

46 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2004

We purchased the Intrepid with the 2. 7l engine with 29,000 miles on it for approximately $13,000. March 18, 2004, with 82,000 miles on it, the engine failed. We purchased an extended warranty to cover these events, but it expired at 75,000 miles. For the past year, we have been making payments and paying full coverage insurance for this vehicle as it sits behind our house, not being driven. A quick search on any search engine, brings up hundreds, if not thousands, of cases of this particular car and engine failing at the 80,000 mile mark. Due to the nature and history of these engines, we are not able to find a used one to replace the failed engine in our car. We have had our names listed with dealers and salvage yards around the region since immediately following the engine failure. A new engine costs $5,000 to replace per estimates. The car is valued, with a working engine, at less than $4000. Replacement costs and the amount owing on the car, put us in a position that we have no options at this point other than to let it sit and pay it off.

51 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2004

I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid and without warning the engine failed. I searched the internet and was shocked to find that the type of engine I have is notorious for doing what it did. It has happened to many people with the same type of engine. Their safety is being jeopardized due to the extremely poor quality of this engine.

The insuernce representative also stated that they do not insure and problems related to this type of engine. The manufacturer is aware of the problem.

54 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2003

1999 Dodge Intrepid engine failed at 92,000. Engine was starving for oil, and broke down with little or no warning (sludge build-up). I have been quoted 6500. 00 to fix by auto place. Took to dealer, they could only offer approximately 1- 2 grand, and use 4000. 00 incentive to help cover cost, but still out 4 grand on loan. Called Chrysler, and they said they could not help me, because I am way past the 56000 mark. This seems to be a farce, because there are some many people reporting engine failures on the Dodge 2. 7l engine - same reasons. . Sludge. Often fail without enough warning to prevent major failure.

55 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2003

Immediate engine failure. Engine serviced every 3,000 miles by Dodge. Mileage was 130,000 mostly highway.

Engine failure on 1999 intreped.

60 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2003

My 1999 Dodge Intrepid's engine failed in November 2003 while driving on interstate 55. Quotes given to me to fix and/or replace the engine were in the range of $5500 - $8500. This is the 2. 7 liter engine; at the time of the engine failure I owed over $6000 on the car, and I am still paying on the loan. The car has been sitting in my garage; this is a common problem with the 2. 7 engines, however Chrysler will not take responsibility.

61 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2003

1999 Dodge Intrepid 4 door sedan, equipped with 2. 7 liter v-6 engine, and automatic transmission. At approximately 69,500 miles traveling at 60 mph on interstate highway, and dash oil light came on. Had to travel three miles on highway to reach a safe exit. Engine started to make ticking sound which increased in volume. Engine finally seized while coasting to off ramp. No injuries, no vehicle fire. Vehicle towed to Dodge dealer and diagnosed as "engine failure. " mechanic reported appears to be "some sludge" high in engine, seen through oil filler hole in valve cover. Dealer advised there is a factory rebuilt short block available from daimler Chrysler for $6750 plus tax. Would still have to pay for dressing short block with valve covers, oil pan, throttle body, fuel rail, accessory drives, etc from my old failed engine to make a complete engine. He also said "may be able to get a used engine from a salvage yard for $3500-$4000 but would not be sure of 'reliability' of used engine. " oil change frequency was 11-12,000 miles per customer manual. Have since discovered that there are many other engine failures of the DC 2. 7 liter v-6 engine.

Engine failure on a 1999 Dodge Intrepid, mileage 65,000.

63 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/27/2003

1999 Dodge Intrepid, 2. 7 liter engine failure.

64 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/24/2003

The engine failed at approximately 100,000 miles on my 1999 Dodge Intrepid (2. 7l) and I had a complete overhaul done at a cost of $4,300. I've since found out this seems to be a common problem with this engine. Now I expect that my engine is failing again after being replaced about 14 months and 13,000 miles ago.

65 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2003

The engine failed with no prior warning and it was due to sludge build up.

66 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2003

Complete engine failure on 1999 Dodge Intrepid, 2. 7 lite engine with 50,000 miles on it. Seized up while driving kids to school. Was luckily able to pull off road to avoid accident. Dodge acknowlodges awareness of engine problem but refuses to do anything about it-no recall issued. Found website with other complaints about same engine, so seems to be a common problem that Dodge is ignoring. Total repair cost was over $3,700.

67 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2003

1999 Dodge Intrepid engine failure while driving.

68 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2003

My 1999 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7l blew an engine at normal expressway speeds on July 29, 2003, causing an immediate and extremely dangerous loss of power in mid-traffic. It also resulted in an enormous repair estimate of between $5,000 and $7,500. A design flaw in this particular engine causes an excess build-up of engine sludge, which results in premature engine failure at anywhere between 35,000 and 70,000 no matter how religiously you change the oil. I have since discovered an astounding number of complaints on the internet regarding this exact issue, and any call to any auto salvage yard in America will confirm what I'm saying. Everybody in the auto repair industry is aware of this problem. Chrysler has been made aware of the problem by thousands of complaints regarding this issue, but they have refused to do anything about it. No recall, no assistance with repair costs. Nothing.

69 Engine Failure problem
