I was able to start it back up and make it home. The following day my boyfriend, me and our son were on our way back home from my mothers house we turned into cvs and the car died!!!!! it started back up and we made it out of the way of the other cars behind us. When it restarted this time it was an awful noise coming from the engine. We parked it and I called my step-dad and he said to try and get it home and he would look at it the next day. We got the car home and he came to look at it and said he hasn't ever seen sludged up oil like that in his life!!! he tried to start it a few times and it wouldn't. So now I have this car sitting in my driveway undrivable!!!!! =I have two children, one in school and one not. I'm in college and this is our only vehicle!!!!!!!!!! now what do I do????????? I'm not made of money and I have no way to buy a new engine!! please find some way to help me.

3 Loud Engine Noise problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2008

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid and I bought it from extreme Dodge in jackson mi in 2001. In June 2005 I was driving and it started make this awful noise so I pulled of into a parking lot and turned it off called my husband and when he got there the car wouldn't start so we had the car towed home and had our mechanic come over to check it out and he told us the timing chain when out. So we bought the parts and had him take care of it. Then I drove it for about 6 months and it happened again so this time we took it to the dealer and had them fix it this time. Again drove it for about 18 months and now it is broke down again same thing. I cant afford to keep putting timing chains in this car every 8 to 10 months at 1,800 to 2,300 dollars a pop. And I hear so many people say how bad the interepids are known for this problems. Well I wish I would have know this before I bought the car because I never would have bought it.

7 Loud Engine Noise problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2006

I drive a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. My car has 80,000 miles on it and has always been in good condition. I have a maintenance track record proving that I keep my oil changes and tuneups, etc up to date. On December 20th my car was hit and the persons at faults insurance company (progressive) agreed to fix it. On January 9th I was told that my car was repaired and ready for pickup. As I was driving home my car made this loud sound so I immediately called progressive to have them tow it because I didnt feel safe driving it and it never done anything like that before. Progressive took it to champion Chrysler to assess it I was told that my cars engine locked up while being tested by champion Chrysler. So this means that progressive had my car in their pocession for over a month and now my engines locked up and stuck at champion. Progressive says I did not maintain my car and they will not fix it because it was not their fault. I since then went to jiffy lube and got a print out and it shows I did keep my oils changes regularly and the car was in good shape. I have replaced the brakes, tires, power steering system. Over all it was considered to be in good condition. Now I am stuck champion wants $6,000 that I do not have and I do not feel I am liable for. My cars not fixed and I have no car to drive. I have a job, children that have to get to school and this has been a huge in convenience. I would like to know what am I supposed to do. Is this a car malfunction or who should be fixing my car?.

8 Loud Engine Noise problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2005

While driving my Dodge interpid (that has a 2. 7 liter engine) the engine started making a horrible noise. We could not accelerate over 25 mph and the engine wouldn't stay running if you hit the brake at all. While turning a corner into traffic, the engine died. After about 15 minutes of the noise beginning, the engine light came on. There was no warning sign that anything was wrong prior to it happening. We had it towed to a mechanic's garage and were told it needs a whole new engine and it would cost 5,800. 00. The mechanic said this is a known major problem with this engine and the problem usually starts between 50-60k miles. (mine had approximately 56,000 miles on it at the time the problem started. I also called a Chrysler mechanic and was told the same exact thing about the problem with this engine.

11 Loud Engine Noise problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2004

Engine began making loud noises, took to wildle Dodge Chrysler who informed me that the engine is knocking, sludge, noisy, and that I need a new engine. At 77,620 miles, and still owing $4300 in the vehicle, I did not feel I should have to spend $5000 for a new engine. When we called the manufacturer, they stated that I did not regularly change my oil causing my own problem. I was very frustrated at that accusation since we did change the oil regularly, we just didn't have all the receipts to prove it. I don't understand how Chrysler can get away with this since there are over 400 customers that this happened to. They should be ashamed.

16 Loud Engine Noise problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2002

Dedember 2002 started car and engine making terrible noise. Took it to the dealer and the engine had went out. They had to re-do the engine that cost me $1350. 00. I had been hearing a knocking from the front of the car and the steering was loose. When I tyrned the wheel left or right it would stick and I had loud popping from the steering. I took it to the dealer and it was the rack and pinion. That was on January 21, 2003. In the same week I noticed oil leaking. The oil light was blinking on and off. The dealer said it was leaking due to the oil switch. To fix the rack and oil leak it cost me another $1300. 00. I am trying to get the Dodge company to fess up and pay for the repairs. The car has been well maintanenced and only 51,000 miles.
