1 Water Pump problem of the 2004 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 10/15/2015

In October 2015 I bought a 2004 Dodge Intrepid from a private owner/dealership. I didnt even have for a wek and was on highy doing 60 m. Ph. On hwy and all of a sudden pwered down and turned off and steam coming out from under hood. I proceeded to get out of middle lane to breakdown lane. (very dangerous) when car not running. Let it cool off and drove home and brought to dealer. Dealer could not figure out what was wrong. Sent me on my way. Weeek later was back there again with overheating issue again. Still said could not find out whats wrong. Very frustrated I took car home. From there it ran for like a month and then started overheating again. I had noticed that sometimes when I drove I could tap gas pedal and temp indicator gauge went back down. Weird. Did some ressearch online when this first happened and saw alot of people having issues with this car and previous engine 257 was in a lawsuit for bad engine. Said then engine I have 318 was supposed to be better design but still saw alot of same issues. I finally had to take in becasue it started having starting problems. I did not take back to dealership cuz would have not made it that far and I wanted a second opinion. They found a weep hole in water pump that was leaking and a cam sensor problem which he state had a service technical bulletin. So I called Chrysler and they said need to take back to the dealer to identify that issue . She checked my VIN nr at Chrysler and said that in 2012 the cam sensor was replaced . But still have that issue so said dealer will have to request Chrysler to do again. . . This car looks great inside and out but these issues are resonant in numerous cars. This is a dangerous situation if shuts down or overheats while driving. Chrysler needs to do something about this and should have never sold these vehicles with this engine.

2 Water Pump problem of the 2004 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 05/22/2014

I was driving to work and all the sudden my car started dinging and I look down at the lights and my over heat light was on and my car temp was all the way at high. I took my car to ntb to get an oil change and had just filled my coolant the day before. Ntb had to fill my coolant again that next day. I picked up my car and was on my way home and my car started dinging and it was over heating again. So I pulled over. Let it set for 20 min even with the heat on full blast. And before I even made it home which was not even 10 min away it over heated again. I opened the hood and look and no coolant. Now this is the 3rd time in 2 days of filling it up. Had it towed to a shop. Water pump went and timing chain and the water pump housing at the top cracked. Sad thing is I just bought this car not even a month ago because my other cars engine blew.

3 Water Pump problem of the 2004 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 04/10/2014

Car began steaming, and smoking. Had to pull over to let it cool down, no extra antifreeze available. Once cooled, limped it to mechanic. Mechanic stated fuel pump is out again, after only 45,000 more miles on brand new Dodge water pump. Mechanic also stated that oil pressure is too high and seals bad, oil spewing out everywhere. He said this is a defect of the Dodge 2. 7 liter engine and since water pump is incorporated into motor, the cost to replace it, put all new seals and fix the oil pump would not be worth the value of the car and he will not do it because he refuses to "spend other people's money on a junk motor. " he stated that even rebuilt Dodge 2. 7 liter motors are bad and will quit after only a few thousand miles. He says you can not get a good good 2. 7 liter Dodge motor for any Intrepid built between 1998-2008. He had paperwork showing Dodge knew it was a poor design that would blow and not be worth the cost of repair. I want this corrected and anyone who owned one of these lemons reimbursed for the cost of repairs for these vehicles! Dodge knowingly sold these lemons and did nothing to fix the issue until 2008! this is a clear cut case of consumer fraud!.

9 Water Pump problem of the 2004 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 08/09/2009

Driving home from work in my 2004 Dodge Intrepid when I heard a strange gushing noise from under the hood. The gauges in the car read that everything was fine, car was not overheating, etc. . . Approximately 1 to 2 miles later the car stopped running. I coasted over to the side of the road and called my husband. He and my son in law came and we pulled the car back to the house. Upon inspection of the engine, there was water in the oil when we pulled the dipstick. My son in law is an ase certified mechanic and he went over the car thoroughly in the next day and found that without warning, the water pump blew. The engine was a total loss. The car had approximately 120,000 miles on it and I still had a year of payments to make. Dodge should do something about these cars and this 2. 7 engine. It's a shame, I loved my car!.

12 Water Pump problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 02/10/2009

My water pump blew unexpectedly while driving to the gas station without any previous problems or indications of a problem whatsoever. I thankfully was turning into a gas station when my car suddenly stalled and was able to continue rolling in the parking lot and just made it before an oncoming car almost hit me. I took the car to a local repair where it cost 834$ just to repair because of the extensive work involved in replacing a waterpump on that 2. 7l v6 pos Dodge Intrepid. The following week while driving to class, I parked and the car engine started revving up by itself once again with no prior indication of a possible problem. I called the repair shop and he said bring it in I barely made it to the repair shop and once again as soon as I turned in the parking lot my car stalled and wouldn't turn over afterwards. By that time the check engine light had come on they said it was a generic camsensor/crankshaft error they cleared out the error code ran the car for over four hours leaving it idle, driving it, and letting it sit and cool down and doing it all over again the car never did it again so they assumed the it was just a gliche in computer and nothing was wrong. Approximately a week later I was driving home from my friends house where my car started jerking when going into different gears. I tried as hard as I could to get it to the repair shop to avoid any further towing fees which have cost me up to about 200$ already. I was stopped by a stop light of a busy intersection that was about 3 blocks away from the repair shop&it was pouring down rain I turned on my hazard lights&my dome lights to help other cars see me so they didn't hit me. I almost got hit several times finally got help pushing off the road and waited for a tow truck for over an hour started the car and it ran so I took the chance with my father there behind me&made it to the repair shop. It was the cam sensor which was another 100$. This past week I went to start my car it wouldn't.

25 Water Pump problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 12/09/2006

Wife was driving in a residential neighborhood when the temperature dial went to hot and chimed. Within 2-3 minutes of the chime notifying my wife of a problem, the engine seized and stalled while driving. My wife rolled partially onto a nearby driveway and saw smoke coming from under the hood. My wife had to push the vehicle out of the driveway and down the road in traffic about 1/4 of a mile, to a nearby hotel parking lot to await a tow home. The owner of the home refused to be of assistance to my wife. In the process, my wife re-injured her lower back by pushing the car and simultaneously hopping into the vehicle to navigate/steer/brake while the car was in motion. She was currently under a doctor's care and being treated for this lumbar injury. The Intrepid was towed to a mechanic and he said the water pump failed which resulted in the engine seizing. The mechanic elaborated in sharing how there was no way for my wife to know at any point that there was a underlining problem with the failing water pump and that it was typical for this particular vehicle. We were told it would be $6,000 to rebuild the engine and this problem would occur again later if we opted to move forward and have it rebuild. It was suggested to sell to a junk yard or donate to charity. It's a 2001 Dodge Intrepid se. It sits in our driveway.

26 Water Pump problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 12/08/2006

My 1999 Dodge Intrepid stopped on me on the highway. There was no indication of a problem. I was in stop and go traffic and reached over to turn on more heat. The car just died. I could not get it restarted. I had it towed to my home and had a mechanic come to the house to look the car over. His findings was the water pump was gone and the timing chain was gone. I have a 2. 7 engine in my car. I called the dealership to ask the price of repair. The person on the phone knew before I said what type of engine, type car and year of my car. I told her it was a piece of junk. I have read many complaints on the internet about this engine. I will never buy another Dodge product. In fact I will be buying foreign cars. I would be interested in any type of class action suit that has been filed or will be filed.

27 Water Pump problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 11/01/2006

I picked up the car after purchasing it and never made it home. The car stopped on the highway. I had just pulled off because I heard a sound and the car became sluggish. I tried to start the car up to no avail. I had it towed to a local repair shop, which stated that the water pump failed and flooded the engine. As a result, I was without a car for awhile. The car has been sitting because I could not afford to make the repairs at this time. I was unsure what to do until a new coworker mentioned that she had the same problem and was able to give the appropriate steps to take. The car will be sitting until I can save the money to fix it.

30 Water Pump problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 08/23/2006

1999 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7 engine. . . Goes dead while going down the road. I have had the oil changed religiously @ 3k miles, but it just loses power & dies. I am afraid I will get hit one of these times because I am unable to get the thing off the road with no power. Yesterday almost caused a serious incident. The engine died, the car lurched, I lost power but no lights ever came on. The tach needle hit zero and as I was trying to find somewhere to try & pull off while coasting, the stupid thing all of the sudden came back to life & took off. These incidents are getting more & more frequent and have been occurring about a year now. I've already had to have the water pump replaced, but I can deal with repairs. . . But after doing research today, I have found thousands of incidents like this are happening all over the us! is this not enough to get someone to pay attention & make Dodge recall the engines before some terrible accident occurs??.

31 Water Pump problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 07/05/2006

Returning from vacation, the 2001 Dodge Intrepid I was driving with my children, which has a 2. 7 liter v6 engine just quit after a slight screeching noise. We were on the highway at the time. Lost brakes and steering. Thank the lord that no one was immediately behind us. After getting the car onto the shoulder and after the car stopped smoking, I opened the hood and found that there was oil either from the head gasket or the timing cover sprayed oil over the drivers side of the engine compartment. Pulled the dip stick and the oil was milky. Had to have vehicle towed. Repair shop said they could not find where the oil came from. Then after two weeks they found that the water pump failed and the timing chain tensioner broke. Vehicle was repaired and driven out of shop. Two days later the vehicle overheated and the oil light would come on after engine got to operating temp. Took car back to fix overheating problem and it was a valve under the intake needed to be replaced. The oil light still comes on. I was then told I needed a new engine, sludge caused the engine to overheat and when it quit on the highway it caused the crank shaft and bearings to go bad. New engine cost $5500. 00 from Dodge. Already put $2800. 00. Car is not drivable and it overheated again trying to get home.

32 Water Pump problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 05/20/2006

Engine blown up, due to water pump failure.

33 Water Pump problem of the 2002 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 05/03/2006

I bought a 2002 Dodge Intrepid se in March 2003 with about 20k miles on it. Had it checked by a mechanic and was told all was good. $1,420 to repair the water pump? the engine made a sound, shook slightly which made me look at the gauges to see what was up. The only thing I saw was that the temperature was a little tiny bit over the halfway mark. Usually, this gauge sits without changing once the car is warmed up between the 1/4 and 1/2 mark. Recommend: any service shop that changes the oil in a car should input that service into a national computer system so that anywhere people drive, move, visit, that record is permanent. That is my first suggestions. Then she asked me if the car had overheated. Answer: no. She said the estimate to repair the car was $1,300 and if the heads were cracked that could cost another $700. I was like, "what?" say that again. The way the 2. 7l engine is built, the repairs are expensive. I asked if it was worth replacing and she said it was. . She couldn't advise me. . . But you know how it is. This is not a problem confined to my car - it has affected a fleet of them. . . Same type. . Same engine. After I drove off the lot, I heard a ticking noise. I asked about the notes on the mechanic's ticket that said, "* engine has sludge". No one ever mentioned that to me and I didn't know what it was, either, so I asked. What's that? she said, "that's just the mechanic's notes for when you bring it back. " I said, ". . . Yes. . . But what is it?" then a mechanic appeared and started talking about using synthetic or regular oil (how am I, a lay person, supposed to know what?) to reduce engine sludge and yes, "all these 2. 7l Intrepid engines have this problem. " I said, "so. . . What does it do?" Chrysler needs to fix the 2. 7l engine problems, find a fix for the sludge problem even if it means replacing the engine with another type. It is not fair to cost us unnecessary repairs.

34 Water Pump problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 03/16/2006

Engine of well maintained Dodge Intrepid 2. 7l seized during rush hour on busy road. Wife panicked but was able (luckily) to swing in a parking lot. There was heavy traffic behind her (trucks). Mechanic: checked engine: no sludge was present, no signs of sludge (remarkable!) timing chain broke down and water pump is about to break down (in that case engine would be a total loss). This is the 3rd Intrepid 2. 7l that week with exact same problems around same mileage! since there was no sludge the problems seem not only to be sludge related. Oil change interval: every 3000 miles (proof) w. Synthetic oil. No sludge means that previous owner also mainted the car well! I'll have the mechanic state in his report that no sludge was found for future reference. Warranty company kicked in eventually since they could not use the 'sludge' argument against me.

35 Water Pump problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 03/02/2006

In may 2005, my 2001 Intrepid with the 2. 7l engine left us stranded in the middle of the road due to overheating. The heater also would blow hot air only half the time. I was unaware of the 2. 7l engine problem. The car also had an oil leak. Towed the car to an authorized Chrysler dealer. This dealer performed a diagnostic check on the car and found quite a few things wrong. Contacted the 'extended' warranty company and they advised I needed to take the car to 'their' authorized dealer. Had the car towed there also. The 'warranty' dealer also ran a diagnostics on the car and only found about half of the things wrong with the car. After fighting with the extended warranty for 10 days without a vehicle, they agreed to authorize the work. The dealer fixed the heating problem and replaced the water pump. They also fixed the oil leak and replaced a couple of gaskets. The dealer called us and informed us that the engine had sludge buildup and that a DE-sludging was recommended. This of course not covered by the warranty. We decided to do the DE-sludging at a $300 cost. We received the vehicle back on June 14th. Well, on aprox. March 2nd, 2006 I was driving back from night school on interstate 10 when my engine started knocking. I was doing 60 mph. I stopped and checked the oil and it was normal. So I went on home. The next day, the car would not even start so I had the car towed to the same dealer as before. They ran a diagnostics check and said I need a new engine. Aprox cost $6400. I owe 7k on this car still. The extended warranty will not authorize this work since they claim that the DE-sludging voided the warranty. The dealer recommended it and the warranty had said they wouldn't pay for it but nothing ever came up about voiding the warranty. I'm stuck without a vehicle again, in a rental car of my own expense and no $$ to fix it at this time!!!.
