36 Water Pump problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 02/14/2006

On February 14, 2006 my husband was coming home when the car quit. He let it cool off and then proceeded to drive home. The next day he was going to work and when he pulled into his employers parking lot he noticed his car was on fire. He put it out right away. We called a tow truck to have it towed to the Dodge dealership. We were informed that the water pump went out and needed to be replaced. They also replaced the timing chain and other parts. In may we were going to a graduation in wyoming when our car broke down on interstate. Again we had to have it towed to a dealership where we were informed we needed a new engine at the cost of $6000. 00. We do not have that kind of money to fix the car. We are now renting a car until we can decide what to do with the car. We would like to get information on what Dodge is doing to help other customers who have had this same problem.

38 Water Pump problem of the 2003 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 11/29/2005

I purchased this car used, with 24,000 miles on it, 18 months ago. 6 times to shop: 1) about 3 months after purchase, had to have tie rod replaced 2) brakes needed after approx 14 months from purchase 3) engine needed to be replaced 14 months after purchase 4) water pump housing cracked and had to be replaced, at my expense, after dealership crimped water pump housing when putting in replacement power train 5) sway bar bushings needed replacement at 16 months 6) was just driving home from work and 4 miles from home engine began making weird noises and by the time I got home was making very loud engine noises, sounds like transmission? didn't want to accelerate. Turned car off when I got home and didn't want to start an hour later, just cranked and cranked. I believe this is a lemon, but since I bought it used, don't think I'm covered under lemon law. Will attempt to force dealership to replace car with a different model tomorrow. Oh, and also the inner driver's door handle doesn't open the car door. It broke about 3 months ago, and I haven't fixed it because they want to charge $50 for the part and who knows how much for the labor.

39 Water Pump problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 09/09/2005

Dt a defective 2. 7 liter engine. It had sludge build up and it caused the motor to blow out. The first time it happened was in June 2005, and the second time on September 9, 2005. The motor was making a tapping sound, but the cylinder had broken inside the block, and it was flapping up and down. The dealer said the water pump was bad, and the consumer would have to pay for the motor.

40 Water Pump problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 08/07/2005

The consumer was driving at about 30-35 mph when the engine shut down. When the consumer lifted the hood he could see smoke and a small fire coming from a piece of wire. The consumer was able to put out the fire with a towel. About a month before the check engine light came on, and the dealership said all they did was to turn the engine light off. After the engine had time to cool off he was able to drive vehicle home. This was on 8-7-05. On 8-8-05 took vehicle to the dealership and they told him that the water pump bursted. Also, they a told him that there was water and oil mixed in the engine. The dealer implied that the engine might have to be replaced. The consumer contacted the manufacturer, and they had him on hold while they talked to the dealership. She told him the same information that they did. The consumer found on the internet that there were problems with the 2. 7 liter motor. The second dealership was the one that did the repairs.

42 Water Pump problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 06/15/2005

We have a Dodge 2001 Intrepid with the 2. 7 liter motor. According to other mechanics and personnel within the dealership, there are defects with this motor that Chrysler refuses to address. It has to do with internal components and causes the motor to basically blow up. Our first motor blew up at 83,000 miles and the dealership installed a different motor with 58,000 miles which blew up again 3 weeks later. Today, September 19, 2005, we were to take possession of our repaired car with its third motor within 2 months and were asked to pay a portion of the bill because the dealership claims that this repair was due to a faulty water pump even though the water pump and the timing chain assembly are one and the same on this vehicle. It is my opinion that these 2. 7 liter motors are defective as thousands can attest on the internet, Chrysler knows they are defective but dahmer refuses to act responsibly because they purchased the company after the defect originated. These 2. 7 motors which are sitting on the shelf at junkyards across the country have become worse because the passage of time sitting on the shelf and are worse than the original motors put in them. Furthermore, our extended warranty company, triad advantage, foreseeing the problems to come, shut down, went out of business and took the money and ran when these claims were becoming apparent.

43 Water Pump problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 06/04/2005

Contact states while driving 2001 Dodge Intrepid, the engine failed. There were no warning lights illuminated, the only evidence that something was wrong was was a gray mist that came through the air condition vent inside vehicle. The vehicle was towed at the beginning of June, and the service dealer stated the engine needed to be replaced. The head gasket was blown on the engine, and the water pump was ruined. The engine block was cracked. Dealer had no explanation as to why the engine failed. They did say this happened due to sludge build up in the engine from conventional oil being used in the vehicle. Consumer did not know to use synthetic oil in his vehicle. Consumer does not have the address for the dealer where the vehicle was purchased.

44 Water Pump problem of the 2002 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 05/15/2005

I was driving to church on may 15, 2005 while I was approaching a stoplight the water temp. Gauge began to move to the dangerously high temp. Side and then the engine began making a ticking sound and white smoke came from the engine, then the engine shuts down completely. The thermostat & water pump failed which led to the oil getting hot inside the engine, which led to oil sludging because of narrow oil ports within the engine, which cause the timing chain to fail and the cylinder heads to become damaged. I called Chrysler about this engine defect and they placed the blame on me instead of fixing the defect. I will now have to replace the engine for $4,000 or let it be repossessed. I have a 2002 Dodge Intrepid se with 2. 7l engine.

46 Water Pump problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 03/30/2005

1999 Dodge Intrepid w/a 2. 7l engine. Engine failure at approx. 78,000 miles. Spun 2 rod bearings. I heard the rattle from the bottom end as I pulled into work one morning. Pulled the oil pan before it could get worse. I have used mobil1 synthetic 10w30, changed every 5000 miles. Car is driven alot of the time on the highway. Having been a mechanic for 18 yrs I rebuilt the engine myself. I replaced the main and rod bearings, rings, oil pump, water pump, timing chain tensioner and gasket set. Also the crank was ground and the rods resized, along with having all the engine parts cleaned. I took numerous pictures and kept the offending components. I was without my car for 3 weeks and had to pay for a rental.

51 Water Pump problem of the 1998 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 06/18/2004

Purchased 1998 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7 in year 2001 and engine shut down in summer of 2002. Kept up with oil changes and had oil in it when it shut down. Replaced engine in may 2002 for $4,100. This year June 2004 the engine started knocking real loud with no warning in the middle of 95 in virginia and shutdown. Had to have the car pushed off 95 and had police assistance to have the car towed all the way back to maryland and was told I needed a new engine for the 2nd time. . . . Estimated cost $6. 300 purchasing engine through jasper who has stated the engine has oil line issues and water pump issues. They have revamped and redesigned (so they say to make it a better engine) but the cost to have a 2nd engine is just crazy and I refuse to fix it again. . . . Something needs to be done about this engine problem. . . . . . It is unfair to all the people who have trusted to purchase a car from Chrysler/Dodge and then to have our lives turned upside down. How may complaints does there need to be before this engine is recalled. . Read more...

54 Water Pump problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 01/30/2003

Without any prior warning car would not start after stopping to get gas. Car was towed to dealer where it was discovered that the timing chain had shattered sending slivers of metal throughout the engine causing compression problem, damaging pistons, and causing water pump to seize up. Needless to say I'm now looking to buy engine for a car that I've had for under 24months and still have 36+months to go on my note with the engine only having 65k. Note the driver side seat back did break and I've had to have speed sensor replace all of this within the last 17 months.

55 Water Pump problem of the 1997 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 06/18/1999

I took my car in to have it serviced and have the check engine light looked at for the second time. I picked up the car and the service tech told me the check engine light was coming on because of a loose spark plug wire on cylinder 2, again. That was the reason they gave me the first time also. The oil had been changed and the fluid levels checked at this time. I drove the car approx. 30 miles over the week-end. Sunday 7/18/99, while setting in a mcdonalds drive thru line I noticed my car, I thought it was smoking, it was probably steaming. I pulled over to a parking place and shut the car off. I left it set for 3-4 hours. This was the first indication of overheating that I had ever had. The temp. Indicator light did not come on until the car pouring steam from under the hood. Drove it home and it was getting hot in that short distance. Took it to the repair shop on Monday 7/19/99 and it remains today 8/12/99. The heads on this vehicle were warped. Tried milling them to 8 this is the max recommended by the company, it did not work. Tried to get used heads, found 2 different sets, and both pairs were warped and the service tech would not install them. Order refurbished heads and those are being installed today. I had this car serviced regularly and there was no indication of fluid leaking. I believe there is a problem with this type of overhead cam and the aluminum heads. I also noticed on NHTSA consumer site there were alot of complaints about water pumps going out on this year of Intrepid. My vehicle had a water pump replaced in oct of 1998, and it has also been replaced as a result of this incident. It is not even 12 months old yet. I am sure there is a connection to this incident, and since the water pump is under warranty I feel the extreme damage is cause by the make up of the vehicle itself. I also feel mislead by the rave reviews this vehicle is receiving in the media. Thanks for your time.
