Transmission shift linkage broke. Causing vehicle to go into neutral and roll down driveway. 3rd incident of same problem on this vehicle.
2002 Ford Escape. Vehicle will not go into reverse when reverse is selected intermittently. Reverse is selected and if left in the selection, it will take 3-5 minutes to engage. Sometimes it doesn't engage at all, and if you can pull forward ,then it might go into reverse. This occurs several times a month. Ford can not duplicate it. It is impossible to back away from a dangerous situation or to back out from a pull in parking spot.
2003 Ford Escape shift lever does not lock into park without pushing lever forward, dealer replaced parts and now condition is worse than before. Service manager states other vehicles same year model checked and all perform simularly. Also stated Ford engineers advised him that this is a characteristic of vehicle.

Consumer stated the gear shifter design was defective. Shifter is attached to steering column and is too long. Whenever consumer turns on radio gear is knocked into neutral.
Gear shift lever sticks in front of radio. When changing radio stations hands knocks gear shift into neutral while vehicle is in motion. Consumer states that the vehicle produces so much brake dust that the wheels turn black only after three or four days of driving, Ford states nothing can be done.
