Was driving at a consistent speed down a fairly busy road. Vehicle suddenly lunged forward and accelerated without any pressure on gas pedal and I almost hit car in front of me and braking had no effect. After a few seconds of acceleration the car seemed to lose power to the drivetrain and was unresponsive to me pressing the gas pedal, and the wrench warning light game on. I could only coast over to the side of the road, but the shoulder was not wide enough so part of my car was still in the lane and the car behind me had to swerve out of my way. The car was stuttering and did nothing when I pressed the gas pedal, clutch, or changed gears. Turned off and restarted and the car was working fine as it had been before the incident. The wrench light had disappeared so my mechanic could not pull any codes, but believes it is a defective sensor in the throttle body. For the car to suddenly lunge forward uncontrollably without any warning is extremely dangerous, no matter how short of time. I won't drive until the new part arrives, which could be a week as I live in hawaii. Also, Ford is refusing to pay for it as the warranty has expired. Upon investigating this weekend I have found that this is a common problem with the Escapes, but as an owner I was never once warned of it. Had I been I would have it checked out much earlier and replaced if necessary.

1. On or near November 19, 2011, a spring from the clutch pedal broke. It seems to be one that returns the pedal to its default position as I have to lift up on it from beneath with my foot to get it back to its regular height. I'm concerned that it may cause premature wear on the clutch if it does not return to its standard rest position. The spring broke while the car was parked before driving. ---------------------------------
2. In late 2011, I began to notice the driver's seat belt begin to fray on the bottom (lap side). This is my first experience with a seat belt wearing out, and I generally keep my vehicles at least ten years (all previously owned). I've had this one for only 3 1/2 years and it's a total of 6 years old.

Complaint of not being able to start the car in very cold weather/ gas pedal sticks intermittently although frequency of condition increases as temperatures decrease < 25f. Ford dealer diagnoses issue as a failed air bypass valve (part number: 3s6z-9f715-aa), replaced valve. Condition not cleared. Engine pedal sticks, engine rpm increases without driver input. Manual transmission only reason that driver was able to maintain control (jockeying clutch pedal to limit engine rpm). Throttle body was removed, cleaned and reinstalled. Condition not cleared. Suspect failed throttle body.

2001 Ford Escape, 61,000 miles, clutch failure, clutch pedal went to floor, would not disengage. Was on entrance ramp to interstate highway, in slow moving traffic, otherwise extremely dangerous. Investigated on internet and found that this problem is described in Ford technical service bulletin 1-24-1, so is obviously a known issue. One of relatively few tsbs that could cause a catastrophic accident if it occurred at speed. Most of the tsbs are for things like "whining/buzzing in audio system," "engine oil recommendations/applications," "intake manifold gaskets--fuel smell to the interior. " while some of these may be significant, few of them would cause a catastrophic problem if they occured at speed. The "general recall" and "safety recalls" categories, which include things like "speed control cable defect" and "rear driveshaft replacement differential leak" seem to me much more appropriate places for this serious problem to be reported. Had vehicle towed to Ford dealer. Conversation with them this morning. Confirmed that problem was with master and slave cylinder which they said needed to be replaced. Denied knowledge of a known problem of this type. Said that this was not covered under warranty. I told them to go ahead and replace the cylinders.
Accelerator pedal got stuck while driving down on 96 east in michigan. I was driving about 85 mph and realized my accelerator pedal got stuck of Ford focus se my2003. Fortunately there was no traffic on the road at that time. So I stopped my car (while engine was still roaring heavily), put it into the neutral & key off the ignition. After I key on, problem disappeared.

There was a burning smell coming from the vehicle's clutch and it wouldn't go into 1st or 2nd gear. The dealer was notified. Ph the transmission failed , and the clutch burned. The cable was reinstalled. There was a chattering in the clutch, and the clutch pedal had gone to the floor before being able to shift. The entire clutch system was replaced. Also the slave cylinder was bled. Scc.
