While slowing down to make a turn or come to a stop, vehicles transmission jerks violently. After starting the vehicle and putting it in gear, the vehicle jerks and slams into gear. While on the highway and trying to speed up after going through tolls, vehicles rpm's jump wildly, strains engine because vehicle will not go into gear. Causing you to have to slow down and nearly cause an accident with vehicles behind you. Ford told me (may 8, 2013) it is a leaking seal on the transmission, but the part is on back-order until the middle of July.

Transmission issue- I have a 2012 Ford espape 6 cylinder. While driving the vehicle at low speed (20mph) the vehicle sounds like it is not in the right gear, it makes a noise as if it wants to change gears but can't. When you come to a stop at a stop sign or red light and then try to proceed the vehicle will not go when you push the accelerator, then it lunges forward into gear. I have had it at the dealership 3 times. The dearlership said they fixed the problem, but the problem is still there. I had 8402 miles on it and now have approximately 9400 and I am still returning it to the dealership. I have also contacted Ford motor company and they said it can possibly be the adapt shift strategy, which is when the vehicle has to learn the driver. I have never heard of anything like this. When the dealership has the vehicle they state the vehicle doesn't do it. When I pick the vehicle up from the dealership, I have the problem again after only driving it about 26-30 miles. I know it is the transmission and I feel Ford is neglecting their responsibility to resolve this issue. This vehicle should be performing better than the 2005 Ford Escape (4 cylinder) I previously owned, and was satisfied with. This 6 cylinder has no power to go. When the vehicle is in idle mode it sounds like a diesel vehicle than a regular gasoline vehicle.

After driving 10 miles with the vehicle functioning correctly and then coming to a complete stop at a red light, upon starting back up the automatic transmission would not switch gears until the engine got up to 5000rpm. When it did switch it seemed to change into 3rd gear instead of 2nd because I had almost no power and had to very slowly accelerate from there. Further, it remained in 3rd gear and would never switch to 4th. This created a very dangerous situation on an open highway at night where the cars behind me expected a continuous acceleration to 50mph. I came very close to being rear-ended. My mechanic has determined that 2nd gear and 4th gear are gone. This appears to be a very, very common problem amongst 2008 Ford Escapes and a $2500 repair. This is a manufacturer's defect should be the subject of a recall before this causes a serious accident or fatality.

After driving the vehicle for a couple of hours on Saturday morning on the interstate I was driving in city traffic. I made a right turn from a stopped position. As I accelerated the engine began to sputter and acted like it was not in gear. The dashboard wrench light came on and I had no response from the gas peddle and the idle was extremely rough. I coasted to a stop and turned off the vehicle. After reading in the manual about the light (power train issue) I called and had the vehicle towed to my dealer for service. As it was Saturday I had to wait for service until Monday. Monday morning I rented a vehicle from the dealer. On Thursday, 10/25/12, my vehicle was ready for pickup. When I spoke to the service adviser I was told it was the throttle body was sticking for an unknown reason and they replaced it. I was informed that this was not a power train issue, but it was an emissions issue. They also said it was not covered under the power train warranty. According to my service ticket they also charged me an additional $170 on a miscellaneous item. On 11/12/12 the wrench light came on again when I started the vehicle in the morning. I drove it to my dealer and was told it was the canister purge valve that had a leak. This was also not covered under warranty.
The car did not shift gears smoothly upon acceleration. The issue increased to the point where it became dangerous to operate because of the delayed response. I would attempt to accelerate and the car would suddenly surge forward as I was braking for a stop sign several seconds later. I took the car in for service multiple times with different results each time. I thought the issue was related to the transmission, but no issue was found the first time and the issue was determined to be related to a problem with the onboard computer communications the second time. I experienced the same issue on the way home from the 2nd service visit and took the car back a few days later. (I drove my Mini car in the interim because I did not feel safe in the Escape. ) this time they determined that the transmission had to be replaced. The response is much better than before, but not completely satisfactory.

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Escape. The contact was driving 70 mph when the automatic transmission slipped out of gear, causing the over-drive light to illuminate. This failure happened while the vehicle was still in drive mode. The vehicle was moved off the roadway and as the contact moved the vehicle, it would not shift out of gear and the engine rpms increased excessively. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic shop where the contact was advised that they could not repair the failure. The vehicle was then towed to the contacts home and was not repaired. While driving on an expressway, my car suddenly would not engage and I had to coast off the exit ramp, getting stuck at the top of the ramp. The car would not go into gear, and I had to be pushed off the ramp and into a parking lot. This was at 5pm on a weekday, and had someone not come to help me push the car out of the way, it could have been a major accident.

2002 Ford Escape 4x4 55,000 miles
while driving 70 mph on rt 95 the car suddenly appeared to have gone into neutral, although it was still in drive. Luckily we were able to make it to the side of the road 100 miles from home. The car would not move in any gear and now requires a new transmission. There were no previous transmission problems and no warnings that anything might be wrong.

For the second time in two weeks could not move gear shift out of park. Dealer replaced shifter assembly the week before. This time dealer tightened all the ground connections. This SUV is leased through a commercial lease and has been problematic from the day I leased it.
Consumer noticed the vehicle was using excessive fuel and was not shifting into gear properly. At one time, the vehicle would not go into reverse. The dealer examined vehicle and determined that transmission was defective, even with up to date service records, and noted that problem first started at 49,000 miles, manufacturer refused to assist in repair.
