The vsm (vehicle security module) failed. Symptoms include, but are not limited power door locks do not work, key fob does not work, auto headlights do not work, radio doesn't turn off when key is out of the ignition and door opens, no audible indicator for key in the ignition, no audible indicator for headlights on with door open, dome lights stay on. This problem is widespread with this model year and there are many reports on forums around the internet. Ford has also stopped making the original part and replaced its manufacture with a new part which supposedly does not exhibit the same random failure rate. Headlights not working is a major life safety issue. I drove without headlights on for some time (as the auto headlights did not come on) and did not notice it until I was on an unlit street. All of the old vsms should be changed to the new model free of charge to prevent this from happening.

I have a 2000 f 250 diesel pickup. The engine has stalls and thus you loose brakes and power steering. It has happened while going a loww speed 2x recently. Also while stopped . I had the camshaft sensor when the truck was about 3 years old. It is now occuring more often.
Camshaft position sensor (cps) has failed 3 times since I've had the vehicle. My truck has only 77,000 miles on it. When this sensor fails the truck dies instantly and will not restart. I was lucky all 3 times to not be pulling a trailer in heavy traffic.
Random truck failure of the engine at no particular time. Problem diagnosed as camshaft sensor by Ford technicians. $185. 00 part that seems to be failing a lot according to Ford techs. Ford states they are currently not having problems with the sensors but out of 5 guys I personally know, all 5 have had problems with their 7. 3l diesel camshaft sensors. Extremely dangerous because of engine failure. Ford only offers a 1 month warranty on the item and offers an average of 6 months on any other electronic device on the truck. Seems they know the failures are occuring as well but doing nothing about it.

My 1999 Ford F-250 super duty 7. 3 power stroke diesel engine had intermittent engine failure while driving. This caused the vehicle to die in precarious locations, such as intersections and freeways. This originally occurred within two weeks of the vehicle purchase date when it was new in October 1998. I have researched this problem, and the cps was the known cause. I have owned the vehicle since it was new. I have not received a recall notice from Ford, and have been unable to locate a recall on their power stroke website. According to the many websites dealing with the power stroke diesel, both the 7. 3 and the 6. 0 ltr models, this problem was consistent throughout the marketplace. . Read more...
Traveling south on hwy 78 in sachse, TX my engine stalled at cruising speed if 45 mph. I lost all power steering and braking control on my 2000 f250 diesel. I partially got my truck into a turn lane, and after 5 minutes of repeated cranking the truck started again only to stall out 15 seconds later. The date below is approximate, but can be verified as the part was changed under warranty, and explained as normal by my dealership.
