3 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2000 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 08/25/2010

Driving down interstate when started smelling antifreeze. Thought it was coming from a car in front of me. All gauges were fine with no indication of an engine problem. I drove for several miles before I began to notice engine trouble. By this point all the water had been pumped out of the motor. All engine gauges continued to read fine. After pulling off side of the road and diagnosing the problem I discovered that the heater hose outlet on top of Fords plastic intake had broke off. In order to fix this issue you have to replace the entire intake. This could have been much worse as when I stopped I could have been burned, also when I finally noticed it was my car smoke was filling the interior through the heater vents. I still don't know if the motor is alright as it severely overheated. Bare minimum is over 800 to fix if there is no motor damage.

4 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 08/24/2010

While driving on the interstate at 65mph, the intake manifold cracked, spraying coolant and steam from the hot engine out the back of the hood. This covered the windshield, causing me to lose all visibility. This is very dangerous, had there been something in front of me, I would have caused an accident. I see that there are numerous recalls for the same part/engine on other years and vehicles. The dealer also replaces it, with an updated version to avoid failure, at a cost of $900. 00. If it is recalled on one car, why not the rest. It is the same part number and the same engine, it shouldn't matter what model vehicle it is in. Someday there will be a terrible accident due to this.

5 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2006 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 08/24/2009

Why aren't dealers required to notify vehicle owners of TSB's which may result in part failure and expensive repairs, especially within the warranty period, or be required to offer extended warranty on those items? 2006 Ford Mustang v6 had a/c pump failure (resulting in expensive system repair) at 31,000k miles for which there was a TSB that could have been performed within the warranty period at relatively low cost.

6 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2006 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 08/07/2009

On Aug 5, my coolant was at normal levels at a routine maintenance exam. In the dark in a bad neighborhood on Aug 7, my car overheated. The next morning, the car was returned to the mechanic who saw the car wed as the car could not make it to a Ford dealership and Ford would not complimentary tow the car. The mechanic found that the coolant had drained out as thermostat housing 2l2z8592ba was defective and had broken. They explained that lately they have seen this in many Fords as Ford has changed this part's material and is now making it of a less durable material. A replacement part was ordered from the dealership where I purchased the car who always needs to part number to order any part. They said they did not need the part number this time which indicates that they have had to order this replacement part frequently. The repair costs were $610. I have the part if anyone needs to examine it or photograph it, but they may not keep it unless I am reimbursed in full first. This part lasted the lifetime of my 99 Mustang and 91 explorer and should have lasted the lifetime of this car. It lasts the lifetime of other company's cars. Please look into a recall of this defective part for safety reasons as it causes cars to stop working unexpectedly. On an expressway this could cause an accident. If a woman is driving alone in a neighborhood she would drive through in a locked car but would not stop in for safety reasons, when the car stops working unexpectedly from this problem she could become the victim of a violent crime that would not have occurred if her car continued working.

7 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2006 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled numerous times without warning while driving 25 mph. The local mechanic replaced the radiator three times and the battery was also replaced. The failure was not corrected and the vehicle continued to stall without warning. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who performed a diagnostic and located the failure at the engine. The dealer advised that the engine would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 100,000.

8 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 04/14/2007

Owned car for over 5 yrs. Almost paid off. Discovered coolant leak. Put in new water pump, new pulleys, new thermostat, new thermostat housing, new hoses. Only to discover the junk plastic intake manifold is cracked. Now I found out by searching the internet that this is a common problem on my year of car. Ford is aware of said problem due to crappy engineering and refuses to make it right with consumers. They made it right with the fleet cars that are 1998's and cars other than my year.

9 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 01/23/2007

1) plastic manifold started leaking. No warning. 2) dumped all coolant on motor and left me stranded. 3) will have to replace at a cost of over $900.

10 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 12/25/2006

The intake manifold blow a hole at the crossover exchange, causing coolant to explode out like a guyser and got on my face when I opened the hood to see what the smoke was coming from! it is out of warranty and I was never notified about a recall or class action settlement in 2005. Can I be reimbersed the product has been knowingly and widely viewed be evrybody as defective.

11 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 10/15/2006

1998 Ford Mustang gt intake manifold cracked and leaking antifreeze. Missed the silent recall by 6 months.

12 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1999 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 10/06/2006

Car was leaking coolant out of the thermostat housing. When I went to replace the thermostat and o-ring gasket, I discovered that the ledge that the o-ring sits on had broken off and fell into the intake manifold. The thermostat could not be put in correctly without coolant spilling everywhere. The only remedy was to replace a plastic intake manifold that costs 800+ dollars.

13 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 04/07/2006

I bought a used 1996 Ford Mustang gt, soon after having the vehicle I noticed that the car ran hot and could sometimes smell coolant when exiting the car, after my husband changed many parts in the cooling system, which did not resolve the issue, we called a local Ford dealership and explained the issue the parts department employee stated that he thought there was a recall so he sent us to talk to a service manager, after giving the VIN # to the service manager we were informed that our car did not have any recalls. A few days later my husband found a crack in the intake manifold we replaced it ourselves at our own expense only to find out through research that this is a known problem with these vehicles, I find it sad that an american car company can get away with knowingly selling defective vehicles and getting away with it. I will remember this next vehicle and buy a foreign car.

14 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1997 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 02/06/2006

Took car to garage to check for reason for loss of coolant. They found that the intake manifold on the Ford 4. 6 l engine was leaking and stated that this was a known problem. Cost to repair was almost $1000 and Ford has refused claim on the grounds that this car was not included in the class action lawsuit that Ford recently agreed to settle.

15 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 08/15/2005

We owned a 1996 Ford Mustang gt that had a plastic intake manifold that cracked and failed. The manifold cracked on the coolant crossover passage, directly behind the alternator. There was no crash or injuries. I replaced the manifold myself by purchasing a new one from auto zone on 8/16/05. The cost of the manifold was $264. 94.

16 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 08/02/2005

Engine and engine cooling system I bought a lot of new parts for this car to try and keep it cooled down everything there is to buy I was finely told by the shop that works on the car I should check with Ford because if they did anymore work on my car it could become up in the thousands and that Ford should be paying the bill or recall the whole car there is a lot of miles on my car but I take very good care of it and as many parts I buy and as many times that it has been in the shop almost everything on the car is new I have tried everything to make this car run good the reason the owner before me sold the car he was always fixing something on it with everything he done to the car I thought if I just did a little more it would run good but there's no way I replaced the intake manifold 2 times because of cracking I was told by Ford they know there is a problem with the intake manifolds but they don't recall them anymore so second hand buyers are out of luck we just keep replacing that part while Ford gets richer on a part they know will not work on that car I replaced the clutch a little over a year ago and again something 's wrong I had it checked and they found that all the bolts that hold the transmission in where all almost out I have had them put back in place 2 times and the same with starter only with the starter there was only one bolt left holding it the shop said they don't even know how it had been starting so I fixed that but worried about them all the time Ford has been no help on any thing I called about but they say they know of the trouble people are having but sorry no one has put any recalls on these problems and that they will send me a letter if any recalls come out anything that cost Ford to much never gets recalls only thing like hood latch seat belt those 2 things I have never had trouble with but they also don't pay much to have them fixed.

17 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1999 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 07/24/2005

Crack on the plastic intake manifold at the thermostat housing allowing anti-freeze to leak on the engine. The intake manifold must be replaced at my expense. Ford is aware of this problem and has recalled the faulty intake manifolds on all fleet vehicles but refuses to do anything for privately owned vehicles. This is not right!!!.

18 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1999 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 07/24/2005

Crack on the plastic intake minfold at the thermostat housing allowing anti-freeze to leak on the engine. The intake manifold must be replaced at my expense. Ford is aware of this problem and has recalled the faulty intake minifolds on all fleet vehicles but refuses to do anything for privately owned vehicles. This is not right!!!.

19 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 04/18/2005

Ford motor company settled the lawsuit with the defective intake manifold that was to cracking but did not include all vehicles and I happen to be one of them. I should not have to pay for their defective parts. They extended the warranties or seven years but only after a certain date and many Ford owners were left out in the cold. They should replace all of them no matter what!!.

20 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 01/30/2005

Plastic intake manifold cracked for the 2nd time. I was fortunate enough to get covered under the recall the first time, but this time I'm on my own. This is on a '96 Mustang gt with 100k miles. Both cracks were around the temperature sending unit at the front/passenger side of the motor.

21 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 01/01/2005

There is coolant leaking from the intake manifold. It was determined to be due to a defect that the intake has.

22 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 11/24/2004

Ford automobiles equipped with Ford's 4. 6l v-8 contain an intake manifold that is prone to failure. Due to original design, this part has a tendency to crack resulting in sometimes over heating, engine failure and worse case damage to other parts of the car's engine. Ford recognizes this problem but will not recall most cars other than fleet vehicles and those listed in the TSB #97m91. 1. 1998 Mustang was overheating while driving down the highway. 2. When car was taken to a repair shop the mechanic noticed a crack in the manifold and advised me to take it to my local dealer. It was brought to my attention that if this part was not corrected engine failure could occur due to coolant loss resulting in severe damage. 3. Car was taken to local Ford dealership and I gave them the TSB #97m91 and told them to replace the part. 1998 Mustang was not listed and the car and can't be fixed at dealer's cost only consumer's. I called Ford motor company and have not had any luck talking to customer service about this problem. Ford owners be aware of this problem.

23 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 08/20/2004

Vehicle contains a plastic intake maniford that cracks due to the heat and chemicals involved in standard engine use. The cracks allow the escape of radiator fluid/antifreeze . . . Which will then cause permenant damage to the engine/vehicle. Ford in fact knows of this problem, and warranties certain vehicle styles/years as well as vehicles used as fleet/police/taxi vehicles . . . But not all affected vehicles for consumers that contain the identical part in question. Later vehicle years were fitted with intakes with either aluminum crossovers, or made all of aluminum. Vehicles that contain the failed part have the part replaced with the aluminum-crossover part at the owner's expense. 1. ) part fails under regular use of vehicle. 2. ) defective part must be replaced at high cost of labor - dealership refuses to repair part despite technical service bullitin #97m91. 3. ) nothing. - dealer will not replace - I cannot aford replacement currently.

24 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 07/01/2004

(1) events leading up to the failure: normal driving conditions. 2) failure and its consequences: cracked intake manifold on 1996 Ford Mustang gt sohc v8 engine (85,000miles). Engine coolant leaked out rendering car undriveable, and me stranded. (3) what was done to correct the failure; I. E, parts repaired or replaced: framingham Ford dealer replaced the defective part at a charge of $1150. The work was done in a sloppy fashion where upon receiving the car, there were washers and nuts missing from some parts of the reassembled engine (which has since been adressed). The cracked manifold was not fixed under warranty or the 97m91 recall as it had run out last year. There was no recall notice sent prior to it running out. Being a known problem, Ford needs to replace the part at their expense, not at a profit for themselves.

25 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 05/13/2004

Car is a 1998 Ford Mustang gt with the sohc 4. 6l engine. At around 105k miles, coolant levels started dropping rapidly, especially when the engine was revved above 3000 rpms. Eventually, levels dropped more quickly than coolant could be replaced and car overheated. Found a large pool of coolant in engine valley between cylinders. Found recall on composite intakes for 1996 and 1997 Mustang gt's with 4. 6l sohc engine but not on 1998 vehicles. Intake was replaced with new version with cast aluminum crossover tube at owner's expense.

26 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1997 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 02/01/2004

I have a 1997 Ford mutang gt with 106,000 miles, and Ford made it clear about a recall on cracked plastic manifolds. My manifold is currently leaking around the plastic intake which was clearly addressed in the recall. I received no notification from Ford. I think Ford should replace this at no cost.

27 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1997 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 12/24/2003

Intake manifold cracked, causing coolant to be sprayed on engine. A $245 expense just for the plastic part that should have never been put into production, not to mention the safety concerns should the crack had happened rapidly and steamed up the windshield. However, after trying mulitple times to get the thermostat housing to quit leaking (using rtv on the poorly designed o-ring seal), my son noticed the crack in the intake next to one of the bolt holes used to secure the thermostat elbow. It's unbelievable how such a mature car company can put such a design in production; and to make it worse refuse to volunteer to correct their error.

28 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 06/27/2003

I purchased a 2003 Ford Mustang on June 20, 2003. Since then I have had it in the repair shop two times, going back for a third on sept. 3, 2003 for the air conditioning unit. It works for a week or two then starts blowing warm air. The first time I was told it didn't have freon, the second time the compressor was taken out and I was given a new one. I won't know until I go back for the 3rd time what the problem now is.

29 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 05/09/2003

My car's cooling system was draining fluids, and when I took it in to the dealership to get checked out, they told me the head gaskets as well as the front timing cover gasket needed to be replaced. It cost me $2500 for the repairs necessary. There are about 12 or 13 complaints of a similar nature for the same model and year (1996 Ford Mustang), but since this engine was installed on other models and years, who knows how many others have suffered from the same problem.

30 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 04/10/2003

Plastic intake manifold cracked, leaking radiator fluid. Ford will fix the exact same problem on the 97 Mustang, but not the 98.

31 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 03/13/2003

After driving to work one morning, once I parked I noticed that coolant was leaking from bottom radator hose. Dealer replaced cooling hoses and clamps. Also the paint were the hood scoop meets the hood started to chip, water gets caught under the hood scoop making it difficult the keep it clean.

32 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 01/22/2003

Vehicle had no heat, coolant leakage, vehicle ran rough, etc. (nar).

33 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1996 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 11/26/2002

Consumer states her auto is running hot, and she has taken the auto to 4 mechanics and each has said that this part has been on recall. She also states that her air condition and defroster does not work. She also said she was told that the 95 and 96 has been recalled for this problem. Ts.

34 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1998 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 01/01/2002

Ford motor CO. Does not recognize this to be a problem, and stated that there is nothing they can do for their consumers at this time, when there has been problems with a similar issue with other vehicles (explorer). No safety defect mentioned.

35 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1997 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 09/12/2001
