The car was built with a plastic intake manifold. The manifold began leaking at the thermostat housing and then the heater hose connection on the intake manifold suddenly broke. I now have to have the entire intake manifold replaced because of poor design and material selection. Ford knew of the problem but refuses to address the issue and hopes it will just go away. They should reimburse the owners of the vehichles for repairs that were due to poor design and materials used to make this part.

While driving vehicle, engine began to overheat. Steam rolled from under the hood. Discovered crack in manifold where it connects to thermostat housing. Coolant dripping on the engine; I do not know if internal components are damaged. Researched it online and found that there was a recall on this model and that Ford corrected this in subsequent models by changing manifold to aluminum from the plastic. Ford will not honor recall for my vehicle. They are claiming that my vehicle isn't on the recall despite the fact that my car contains the same part that has been recalled.
The contact owns a 1999 Ford Mustang gt. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, she smelled a strong odor of antifreeze. The contact pulled over and noticed a crack in the plastic manifold and coolant leaking from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis, who stated that the manifold would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and informed the contact that there was not a recall related to the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000. The was unavailable.

While driving on the highway the plastic transition piece between the thermostat and the intake manifold failed causing coolant to fill four of the spark plug wells and causing the car to miss very badly. This is a known problem with these intakes and a recall is in place for some of them. Mine is the same part number as the recalled ones with the same problem as the recalled ones but not covered under the recall.
I just had to pay approx $700 to replace my intake manifold which cracked and caused a coolant leak. Upon fixing this issue, I was informed that this was a Ford recall a few years ago. Seeing as this part has never been replaced on my vehicle, I would like more information on this recall and what can be done.

The plastic intake manifold cracked and leaked coolant onto the engine and other related components. Car died on freeway. The plastic intake manifold cracks. The coolant will leak onto the top of the block and then down the back of the engine. This intake design is a known defect by Ford. Below is an "owner notification letter" from Ford:
97m91 April, 1999
Ford motor company is providing a no-charge service program number 97m91, to owners of certain 1996 through 1998 crown victoria taxi, town car limo prep & delivery package, 1996 and 1997 thunderbird, cougar and Mustang vehicles equipped with 4. 6l sohc engines. This service program provides additional coverage for the intake manifold. Reason for this program
fatigue cracks may develop in some of the composite intake manifolds used on the 4. 6l sohc engines installed in the affected cars. This condition may result in engine coolant leakage which, if not detected or ignored, will cause engine overheating. Complete loss of coolant may result in engine damage or engine failure. What we will do
if the engine of your car should develop a coolant leak at the intake manifold cross over coolant passage, located directly behind the alternator, your dealer will verify the condition. If the coolant leakage is from the location described above, your dealer will replace the engine intake manifold assembly free of charge. This no charge coverage is available for 7 years from the vehicle's warranty start date (no mileage limitation) and is automatically transferred to subsequent owners. My complaint is that my Mustang did not leak at the given 7 years and now Ford motor company will not do anything. Everyone who owns these defective vehicles should have a replacement made available to them regardless of when the failure occurred. It is a safety issue, as stated in above letter from Ford.

So I thought I had a simple thermostat issue. Went to change the thermostat and noticed the manifold housing (plastic) had a nice crack in it. When doing research on this, I noticed there have been numerous complaints/instances of this happening to other people. Now I am in the process of finding a new intake manifold and will have to pay to have it installed. This seems to be an issue that the department of transportation should be involved in. Poor manufacture design with numerous incidents of failure that result in unnecessary high repair costs placed on the consumer. I am the original owner of this vehicle and think it is rediculous!.
This is regarding the intake manifold on Ford v8 engines. My intake manifold on my 2002 Ford Mustang v8 cracked and caused me to replace the entire intake manifold. When this happened, it leaked coolant rapidly. There was a class action suit filed (in which Ford was held liable) in the past years and I was never notified of this lawsuit regarding this issue. Ford has since stated that they will not honor any repairs after March 2006. However, this is still an issue and needs to be looked into further. My Mustang only has 89k miles and the manifold cracked without warning, causing a major repair bill of $1,231. Ford should be held accountable for any/all repair costs for an extended period of time regarding this weak engineering.

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Mustang. While driving approximately 25 mph, the contact noticed smoke coming from under the hood. The contact stopped the vehicle and noticed a hose was detached from the engine of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics. The technician stated that the bypass hose would have to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure recurred while the vehicle was still at the dealer. The technician then stated that the manifold was fractured and the head gasket would have to be replaced. The manifold was replaced but not the head gasket. The vehicle was not further repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 53,000. Updated 12/06/lj.
The contact owns a 2000 Ford Mustang gt. While driving approximately 35 mph, the contact noticed that the vehicle began to overheat and steam was escaping from under the hood. The contact stopped the vehicle and noticed that the plastic riser on the back side of the manifold and the heater hose were fractured and water was leaking from the heater hose. The vehicle was towed to the contact's home and was inspected by an independent mechanic. The mechanic was able to attach the hose back onto the vehicle. In addition, the intake gasket was leaking anti freeze and water where the manifold was attached to the cylinder heads. The mechanic advised that the intake manifold was fractured and would have to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

Engine was using coolant/took to Ford dealer & they advised it's coming from crack in top of the intake manifold and there had been a recall on these due to class action lawsuit, but time to file ended 4 mos. Ago & we'd have to pay out of pocket.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that the intake manifold leaked coolant while traveling 30 mph. The contact believed that the leak could cause an engine malfunction and maybe a fire. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. Also, the spark plugs separated from the cylinder head while the contact was driving. The vehicle was being repaired at a local repair shop in reference to the spark plugs. The failure mileage was 108,000.
Intake manifold failure on 1998 Ford Mustang gt / 4. 6l / 2v per class action suit us district court / northern district of California.
Plastic intake manifold on my 2000 Ford Mustang gt cracked and was leaking coolant. Part was replaced by sanderson Ford in glendale az on August 3, 2007 at a cost of $1406. 01. There was a class action lawsuit against Ford in regards to these defective manifolds but I am outside of the period of which it was in force, but I feel that period was too short as my vehicle was purchased on November 18, 1999 and I am the original owner.
Faulty parts that was part of a class action law suit that Ford never notified all involved. . . Therefore, they hid from telling so that they wouldn't have to pay for all the cars with this faulty part. . . Per Fords customer service, the notices only went to the original owners. . . Not true my other Ford had a recall and I rec'd that info and I wasn't the first owner. . . They are hiding from their responsibilities. . .
The contact owns a 1999 Ford Mustang gt. The contact detected a faint burning smell while driving the vehicle. Once the vehicle stopped, the smell intensified. The contact discovered that the manifold was leaking coolant. The dealer was notified and the contact is awaiting a response. The current mileage is 29,500 and failure mileage was 29,000.
The contact owns a 1998 Ford Mustang. While driving 60 mph the contact smelled anti- freeze. The contact did not remember if the air conditioner was on or not. After removing the thermostat she noticed that the intake manifold was cracked. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The manufacturer stated that there was nothing that they could do. The failure mileage was 94,000, and the current mileage was 95,427.
My intake manifold has cracked.
Cracked composite intake manifold coolant crossover resulting in coolant leak. Manifold being replaced with new aluminum manifold. I subsequently became aware of settlement in chamberlan v. Ford. I never received notification of settlement and my vehicle was past the 7 year limit at the time of the settlement. I feel that Ford should extend coverage.
Ford recall plastic intake manifolds. I have purchased a 1998 Mustang from a non Ford dealer there is a definite leaking intake on this motor,I have contacted a Ford dealer in my area they said the recall time has expired. The place of purchase and my self new of no recall untill I started looking on the internet, and started to keep adding antifreeze to the system, you can see the leaking intake,.
: the contact stated while driving any speed, antifreeze leaked heavily from the vehicle. A private repair shop inspected the vehicle and determined that the intake manifold was cracked. Also, while driving 75 mph, there was a clicking noise heard, and the hood raised slightly as if it was not shut properly. The contact pulled over and shut it again. The repair shop was unable to determine the cause of that problem.
(7/23/06) 1999 Ford Mustang gt, 4. 6l blew spark plug for the third time now. The first time was back in 2005 while driving on the 15 freeway heading south at about 8:00 pm. Stop to get gas and upon starting the vehicle to continue my way home it made loud pop and then continued to pop, pop, pop. At first I thought I had an exhaust manifold problem, but upon the repair shop inspection of the vehicle they noted that the number one spark plug had blew out of the piston. They repaired it for about $ the second time was about 6 months ago when the number two spark plug (all this being on the drivers side) blew out. No damage to the threads and a new set of spark plugs were put into the vehicle all around. Then on Sunday evening, July 23rd 2006, the same number 2 spark plug blew out again; this time taking all the threads with it. I had to have the car towed to my place of residence and now I am in the process of finding a repair shop to re-thread the piston. I am sure they will have to get a new coil as well; since it broke off at the place of were it is bolted to the head. I called Ford motor company on Tuesday, July 25th 2006 and spoke to customer service rep. And basically was given a not our problem attitude. This is appalling that such a large company as Ford will not acknowledge the problem and fix it! I am a single mother and can not afford to have my car fixed at over $3000. 00! I am not happy with Ford and will not buy from them again. I was a huge Ford fan; when anyone would try to discredit them I would back them all the way! not any more they don't back their customers. I guess Ford motor company has no loyalty to their customers what so ever! so I shall no longer be loyal to them. I will be buying a chevy or other vehicle that has no association with the Ford name, as soon as this is fixed. She's being traded in ASAP!.
The plastic intake manifold cracked while driving my 1997 Mustang with 4. 6l. Cost $1020 plus towing, to repair at local Ford dealership. Ford refused to provide any financial assistance, citing the chamberlain settlement's exclusions.

This is regard to a 1996 Ford Mustang gt coup with a 4. 6l with the now known faulty plastic intake manifold. I am the second owner of this car, it was purchased from car max in early 2000. So far the repair cost is just $1,000. I am aware of the just finished class action lawsuit but my case was not included due to it being outside the 7 year window. The car was serviced at Ford dealerships well with in the 7 years but they never said a word. I feel this is unfair practices by Ford and their affiliated dealerships. I want to make you and everyone else aware that I am prepared to join any subsequent litigation to help cover the many, many other intakes that were not handled in this class action suit. I am asking you to please encourage Ford to make good on the right thing to do.
: the contact stated the vehicle was taken to a service dealer to replace two exhaust mufflers. After two and half months the new stanley steel mufflers became severely rusted. When the service dealer was alerted, they refused to acknowledge any warranty on the mufflers.
Plastic intake manifold cracked at thermostat housing, thus allowing anti-freeze to leak onto the engine. I must pay for the parts and labor to replace the intake manifold at + $350. 00 for total repair of problem that Ford has been aware of for years !!!.
