1 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2018 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 03/01/2025

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the "exhaust mode not available" message was displayed. Upon inspection, the contact discovered that the active exhaust on the rear passenger side had rubbed against the sub frame, causing valve fuse 34 to blow. The contact replaced fuse 34 but was unable to disconnect the active exhaust, and the wiring had detached. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.

2 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2013 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 09/16/2019

Tick in engine at idle due to manufacturing defect effects behavior of driver and strangers toward operator hearing, resale value greatly effected. Poor lubrication to #1 valve train. TSB 12-1-17 describes a fix that causes greater harm by starving exhaust cam journals of oil by using oil plugs to block oil flow thru hydraulic cam to the exhaust cam valve journals on cylinder 3 and 4. Efforts to secure remedy or reasonable information to effect repairs from Ford result in misleading directives, over charges and denied access to upper management to secure reasonable discussion and or meaningful remedy. Noise is always present at idle after warmed up. Loud offensive irritating. Contacted several Ford dealers and Ford customer service. Ford refuses to give access to upper management for resolution.

3 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2018 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 07/18/2019

At 60mph on the freeway, my 2018 Mustang gt with 2,000 miles on it blew the engine. Massive amounts of smoke were pouring out the exhaust pipes and from under the hood and the vehicle was violently shaking and sounder like a tin can full of nuts and bolts. Got the car to the shoulder but my wife and I were scared to death as cars were whizzing by just inches away. According to online chat rooms a number of these engines are experiencing similar failures. A bad batch was produced and Ford should have recalled them. I asked Ford to replace the car with a factory intact vehicle and they denied the request. They say all that is required of them is to fix the issue. I bought the car as a collectors item and this takes away all value as a collectors car. I offered to split the cost of getting a new one and they said no. I have suffered monetary damage on the value. It's a dangerous situation having these engines blow up. I feel fortunate to have made it through the ordeal on the freeway and its aftermath. The back wheels could easily have locked up and that would have been catastrophic.

6 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2015 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 08/04/2017

2015 Ford Mustang has a carbon monoxide leak in the cabin when a/c is on. Recorded carbon monoxide readings of 28 ppm and 17 ppm one week apart using a digital detector. Tested multiple other family cars with same detector under same conditions and received readings of 0 ppm, indicating detector is working accurately. Car originally had cracked exhaust and strong fumes that leaked into cabin with a/c on. Car was brought into service department and exhaust/catalytic converter were replaced. Carbon monoxide continued to leak into the car interior after repair, and contact experienced headaches, near loss of consciousness, dizziness, fatigue, and chest pain. Multiple medical visits were made for the experienced symptoms. Car was brought back to service department and exceeded the reasonable repair wait time after staying 34 days at dealership service department for repair.

7 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2016 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 06/03/2016

Lost power in insanely busy irving/dallas intersection near major highway - could have been a huge accident! 5400 plus miles. Ford 2016 Mustang, v6 from a standing position, second car in line at red light. Light changes, traffic starts to move, I stepped on gas and nothing! had to creep across two lanes of busy traffic and limp up onto a sidewalk as that there was no breakdown shoulder. Than god the curb was about 2 to 3 inches high. Wrench icon on dash: "see manual". Turned engine off and back on - rpms surged to the red and then dropped to below 1000. Tried the off/on thing about 3 times - same results. Engine was chugging, missing, even exhaust was chugging like some old jalopy! checked the electronic gauge readings - everything was normal except the vacuum pressure - it was between 5 and 0! after several calls to dealership, Ford roadside assist and tow company; turned car off again - 30 seconds to a minute later, restarted it - and it was running perfect - engine light however was on. Vacuum level was running between 17 and 20. Towed to dealership; it's a week now and I have just learned from them that it's the throttle body. Was told that "Ford had a bad batch of these" on this engine size (v6). The part is on back order. The dealership service rep stated it's taken as long as a "couple of months" but Ford is getting faster at getting the part out, so it could be a week to two weeks to get it in. I have seen reports of this same issue on carcomplaints. Com for explorers - from Jun 5th 2016 - stating that Ford had 7000 throttle bodies on back order! this is an exceptionally dangerous situation with these things losing power like this on highways and in major traffic. Ford needs to issue a recall on this throttle body!.

8 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2014 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 10/28/2014

Upon accelration to pass a slow vehicle a strong odor started to fill the vehicle, almost like a propane smell. This I later learned to be exhaust fumes, or I should note, unburned fule passing throught he system. This is the 3rd time this has occurred, and only does this under acceleration when passing slower vehicles or using more power to ascend hills or mountain type roads. Vehicle throwns no ses codes. Vehicle does not stutter or hestitate, but as noted does produce a foul smell under harder acceleration.

9 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2008 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 10/24/2010

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Mustang. While driving approximately 10 mph he heard a banging noise in the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was driven onto the emergency lane where he noticed an object laying in the road. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the object was part of the exhaust system. The vehicle was being repaired. The failure and current mileages were 33,300.

10 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 01/27/2010

2001 v6 Ford Mustang suddenly started to miss-fire. I have been smelling exhaust odors for some time, but could not find anything wrong. I took it to the dealer as soon as it started to miss-fire. They diagnosed the problem as a sensor with moisture in it and both exhaust manifolds were cracked. It's no wonder I was smelling exhaust fumes. I was lucky not to be overcome with carbon monoxide while driving. There was no apparent reason for the exhaust manifold failure. The dealers rep said: " we have replaced quite a few of them and the new ones are better".

11 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 08/22/2009

I recently purchased a 1999 Ford Mustang with a 1998 used engine installed into it. I only had 1 real problem with it and it was my exhaust. I had that fixed and ran great for the next day. Less then 36 hrs after the exhaust was fixed and after sitting for about 15 hrs or so, which was from around 9:45 pm Friday the 21st to around 12:30 to 1:00 pm on the 22nd of August. A neighbor came pounding on our door telling us our car was on fire!!!! he also stated that he heard what sounded like someone was trying to start it from a distance. Well we don't have a remote starter for this car, it only unlocks the car and trunk, does not start it. We believe it was electrical in nature and need to find out what happened as I only had liability ins. And now I have lost my car and have nothing. . . . . . I have pictures of my car just melting away, the entire front of it. I loved this car, I wasn't even finished paying for it. I still owe $1395 on it and I only had it for about 7 months. Fire marshall is still investigating it. I believe he said it possibly started on the passenger side where there was a box above the tire area with wires in it. What were these wires, what were they for as I couldn't see anything matching that description on a 1998 engine image. . . ??? this was the first and only real problem we had, the engine light was always on from the time of purchase, seller did fix but light came back on in about 1 week and was on until fire.

Hearing a exhaust leak like noise and around the spark plug there is air coming out of the heads causing them to eventually blow out and I will be very upset if Ford don't replace it since it is happening to alot of cars!!!.

On my 2002 Ford Mustang v6 the ac condensation drips to my manifold and keeps cracking the weld. I have to get it rewelded every six months. The guy at the shop tells me he gets at least 10 a month with the same problem.

15 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 02/28/2008

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Mustang gt. While driving various speeds, the vehicle idled roughly, overheated, and hesitated. The dealer stated that coolant was leaking from the intake manifold crossover channel. The technician also stated that there was a Ford safety campaign that pertained to the failures he was experiencing. However, the stipulation of the safety campaign state that the vehicle must be within seven years of the original purchase date. The vehicle exceeds this stipulation by six weeks. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure mileage was 125,000 and current mileage was 131,000.

16 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 07/21/2007

I noticed an exhaust leak from the passengers side exhaust manifold. Turns out the weld that hold the exhaust manifold to the rest of the exhaust has failed, it is now being held up by exhaust hangers and metal strapping, until it will be repaired.

17 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 11/13/2006

There was a slight ticking noise coming from engine bay that I thought was an exhaust leak. Eventually the spark plug blew out of the head stripping the top threads out of the aluminum head. In order to fix the car, I had to have a local shop helicoil the head to add threads to the head.

18 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 10/11/2006

I have experienced a spark plug blowout in my 1999 Ford Mustang with 4. 6l v8. I have since read about the vulnerability of these engines to experience spark plug blowout. The first blowout was experienced prior to changing any spark plugs and therefore can not be deemed to be a cause of improper torquing, etc. A heli-coil was used to repair the spark plug blowout, only to have the spark plug blown out again at a later date. This time the cylinder heads were damaged and required replacement. The cylinder head replacement was a major inconvenience both in cost of repair, and in the severity of the malfunction. I am very disturbed to hear the number of complaints and number of other individuals who have experienced this same problem without any proper recognition or action by Ford. I am filing this complaint to draw more attention to this issue and perhaps get some federal action against Ford for this issue. I believe that owners like me should be compensated for the repairs done and the stress/inconvenience encountered due to this manufacturer defect.

19 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 08/19/2005

One week after car purchased paint flaking off and car has blue smoke coming from exhaust at start up. Car has been painted since then 3 times and to date paint is flaking off and you should see all of the buffing scratches from the dealership(town & country Ford/bessemer, al) trying to correct their mistakes. I might add this is a roush Mustang. Car has been in 2 times for blue smoke and service department can't duplicate the problem(common statements made by Ford's service department). Ford motor company refuses to even send a representative out to look at the vehicle. To say the least they do not stand behind their products and we will never purchase another one. We are in the arbitration process at this time with this vehicle. I would not recommend a Ford to anyone. Read all about their problems online before you purchase. I wish I did.

20 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 06/06/2005

Initial problems: 1. Pin strip on driver side was peeling off 2. A/c vent fell out of console 3. Convertible top got stuck in the down position. Stopped by closest dealer because I was on vacation and we pulled the top back up. Brought it to a local dealer for repairs and they said it was not covered under warranty because the entire convertible top frame was twisted. They stated this was because I most likely had driven while the top was half way up/down. After several weeks Ford engineers decided to cover the repairs for the top. Took the dealer five weeks to get all parts and replace the top. 4. Gas tank replaced because gas pumps would constantly cut off while refueling. 5. A/c makes popping noise every once in while. Current issues: 1. Noise in front end while turning at slow speeds 2. After car warms to driving temperature, there is a thumping noise heard in engine, very prominent in interior 3. Driver side exterior door handle sticks in the out position 4. Convertible top making a thud noise when raising and lowering top 5. Exhaust is making a popping noise when if engine is revved right after starting the car 6. Slight vibration/rattling noise coming from console while car idles 7. A/c making popping noise every once in while.

22 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2004 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 09/06/2004

In 2004 my mom bought a new 2004 Ford Mustang with the 3. 9 v-6 motor and within a couple of months it started ticking real loud when you first start it up. Come to find out it was a passenger side exhaust leak that just got worse, and at the same time her engine started making loud chirping and crazy noises to find out it was the cam positioning sensor that went out. Well she paid about $550. 00 to get the sensor fixed but she couldn't afford the exhaust to. So still to this day she drives her nice looking Mustang carefully around town that sounds like its ready to die, and I wouldn't trust driving that thing 10 miles out of town. It might not be an eye sore but it sure is an ear sore, and is stressing years off my old broke mothers life. We've always been a Ford family and my dad retired from Ford proving grounds. But that is the sorriest Ford we've ever seen. Oh yeah, plus the automatic transmission never shifted right from day 1, and she has had to replace the alternator, battery ,a pulley, the serpentine belt etc. And it has a lot of rattles and road noise, and it just barely made 60,000 miles.

Failure Date: 12/27/2003

Repeated intermittent fuel smell during operation of vehicle in interior compartment.

24 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 07/10/2002

Engine check light came on so I took the car to a local dealer. He informed me that the eec test code was p0411 which deals with emissions. When the dealer removed a hose to inspect the component, water came out of the hose. The dealer informed me that the entire air pump was full of water and had "burned" out as a result. I will have to have the pump and relay replaced at a cost of $275 for parts and $120 for labor. He further informed me that this was extremely rare and he did not know how the water could have gotten in to the pump. I called Ford customer care and informed them of the problem and they informed me that they had no other complaints of this nature, but would file the information away for future reference. According to the dealer, this "problem" does not affect driveability of the car, and since virginia doesn't require emissions control testing, there is no requirement to have it replaced, however, the "check engine soon" light will remain on until the air pump and relay are replaced.

25 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 09/24/2001

On Feb. 24th, 2001, I purchased the vehicle with only 21 miles showing on the odometer. I took the vehicle home and the next day, I cranked the auto and the service engine check light was illuminated. The day was Sunday and the dealership, nor the service department, were open. I waited until Monday morning to drive the car, and then went straight to the service department. They did a diagnostic and said the catalytic sensor was acting up and they would turn the light off and that should fix it. However, if the light came on again, I was to bring the car back. I had to bring the vehicle back a total of three times, due to the service engine soon light. I was told after the second replacement of a sensor in the catalytic convertor, that the vehicle had been given bad gas before I had purchased it, causing them, the service repairmen, to have to completely take apart the fuel system and clean it from engine to exhaust. The problem was not fixed until after they completely replaced the catalytic convertor. Information was withheld concerning repair to the vehicle before I purchased it. The replacement was finally completed by April 15th, 2001. My next problem occured on July 13th, 2001. I was returning from a trip to colorado with my father, when as we were traveling, I heard a loud pop and then felt water hit my foot. I had been riding on the passenger's side at the time. When I noticed the water, I looked toward the floorboard and also found that the dashboard had shifted to the left and fallen from the window. We arrived at home later that day and I immediately took the car to the dealership. I was told that they would have to bring it in and do a complete once over to see what had caused the leaking. I took it in on July 17th. I was told they had found nothing wrong with the dash or could not find a leak. I have taken it back a total of 6 times thus far for the same problem and three for the front end.
