1 Engine Noise problem of the 2020 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 08/30/2020

We drove to a farm with a family of 5m kids and an elderly, and parked my car for 2-3 hours in the farm's open area parking lot. Vehicle showed no warning lights, no problems, no issues during our drive to the farm and prior to this trip. Everything was fine when we go there and parked. We were ready to leave the farm to drive back home, but the car simply wouldn't start. The neutral gear didn't work, I attempted many times in 30 minutes to start the car, but it didn't start, continued making the sound of engine attempting to start but not suceeding. 30 minutes later, I decided to give it another try, I was afraid to burn down the starter after attempting so many times. It sounded terrible, screeching metal sound. All of a sudden, the car started. I let it run, afraid to turn it off again. After 15 minutes of running, while we were waiting for roadside assistance to arrive, the vehicle turned off again, all by itself. No one was inside the car, we were waiting outside with the driver door wide open. I called roadside assistance, waited 40 minutes to get a live agent to talk to. The yellow engine light is on. I tried to look in the manual to be able to find anything remotely close to what was happening. Came up with nothing. This was so far the trickiest thing to happen to me. I scheduled an appointment to take the car to the dealership for diagnosis.

Car is experiencing oil consumption at a high rate. I looked into his and I guess is very common. And I guess gm won't do anything about it. What do I do now? do I junk it and take a loss as the motor is now making noise . There has got to be something to do.

5 Engine Noise problem of the 2011 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 01/17/2019

Excessive oil consumption. I purchased a 2011 Terrain not knowing there was an issue with the excessive oil consumption. There is no warning light just started tapping in the engine. Noticed a knocking/rattling in engine while accelerating at slow speeds, on board computer stated remaining oil live was over 51%, however no oil registered on dipstick. Add oil and noise stopped. I only discovered because I started to hear a stranger noise when I was stopped with the car running.

6 Engine Noise problem of the 2014 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 01/03/2019

I've took it to car shop and they said it's burning oil. I have to get oil changes every 2500 miles, and it's low after 2 weeks. I've constantly adding oil and check it between oil changes. This is my first GMC and I'm not too happy about this issue I'm having. 104561 mileage and engine light just came on this week. I'm very scare and I can't afford another engine. It's ticking loud and makes noise when I accelerate. I only work less than 5 miles from home and this is just crazy.

7 Engine Noise problem of the 2018 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 11/08/2018

My vehicle is stalling and stuttering while trying to accelerate. It also does the same when decelerating. The truck will jerk and stutter. Also making noise like a vacuum cleaner while this is going on. I just purchased this vehicle in September 2018 and it has been going on since November 2018.

8 Engine Noise problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 10/20/2018

I bought my 2013 GMC Terrain new in December of 2012. Noticed the engine making noise 10/20/18, mileage: 74,052 needed an emergency oil change, no oil. Again on 1/18/19, mileage: 78,759 engine making noise, checked oil and again no oil. Got an oil change. 5/2/19, mileage: 83,055 engine making noise, checked oil and again no oil. Got an oil change. On 6/16/19, mileage: 84,577 the check engine light came on. Checked oil, again no oil. Went to the dealership. Was told (** the first time) "that the GMC Terrains are known for burning oil. " I asked if there was a recall, was told no. Service manager told me it's a $3500 job to replace the pistons and the seals because they are deep in the engine. He had a mechanic add 2 quarts of oil. I asked if the check engine light had to be reset or if it would go off and was told it probably would go off. Then he sent me on my way. Got a second opinion from another mechanic and was told to diligently check the oil and keep oil in it and it will run fine. Three days later my check engine light is still on. The oil is very dirty and it shouldn't be. , something is wrong!!!this issue really needs to be addressed with gm. Something needs to be done about this problem as I'm not the only one having it!.

9 Engine Noise problem of the 2011 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 04/26/2017

As I read through all the complaints I do not understand why there are not more recalls on this vehicle. I love the car itself but after only having the car for 15 months the motor completely failed with no warning. Our Terrain has the 3. 0 engine but there is an extension of warranty on the 2. 4 engine. However the complaints on the 2. 4 motor mirrors what happened to us. We had fuel injectors replaced a few months ago and oil changed at that time. The night the engine died it had made some strange noises but no hesitation and no warning lights. Not even a check engine light. My husband checked the oil and it was low. There is no way it could have been low. He added some because that is what we are conditioned to do but it never would register on the dipstick. We drove 1/2 mile and the without warning; no noises or warning lights the car died at a busy intersection. Thankfully my husband was able to push me in the car to safety but the car never restarted. We had it towed to the dealer we purchased it from and they said the motor seized up but are unable to tell us why unless we pay for them to take the motor apart. They are unable to find any error codes. They are telling us we need a new motor costing $7400 to purchase and put in. The car is out of warranty. We only bought the vehicle 15 months ago so we haven't had it long; we bought it used. Makes no sense but does sound like the stories on the 2. 4 motors. When is someone going to take notice that there is a problem with these GMC motors whether it is the 2. 4 or the 3. 0 engines. Does it take someone to get killed before GMC admits there is a problem??????.

10 Engine Noise problem of the 2010 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 01/04/2017

Vehicle makes noise on cold starts, rattle and engine noise. Found oil leaking on driveway after dealership oil change. Indication was poor fit of filter. Second such vehicle to have this issue. 11 Engine Noise problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 01/08/2016

Car makes terrible engine noise when starting/as it idles. This is almost always due to low oil. This car burns through oil faster than anything ive ever seen. Even with full synthetic oil I have to add at least quart every 700 miles for so. Keeping the oil level up helps obv, however this problem was going on for some time before I figured out the car was consuming oil at a super fast rate. So who knows what damage may be inside the engine at this point. It has been reported that there is an issue with the timing chain on the i4 engines and they burn oil because the timing is off. However gm's only fix thus far is to run an oil study which takes up a lot of time. This is also huge pain when dealing with any dealer, because only a gm dealer can run the test, and even if it is found that your car is burning oil they will determine it as "normal" if it's not a specific rate. There's no way full synthetic should be burning up this quickly. Gm needs to do a recall for this issue but will not because once they truly fix the issue it will open up a can of worms that would cost them thousands. So instead the cost is passed on to the owner. If they do offer a fix after the oil study it's only for a piston ring kit which does not actually fix the problem of the bad timing chain. So far the only relief I have found is to turn the eco mode off. This gives a little relief to the constant filling of oil. Other than that if the car is low on oil you will feel a chugging/ jerking of the car, particularly at a stop or low idle. I love the look of GMC's however I don't think I can ever buy one again after dealing with an issue like this and having gm not recall a widely know issue.

12 Engine Noise problem of the 2011 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 08/17/2011

We purchased the GMC Terrain with the 4 cylinder engine for the gas mileage of 32 mpg, after getting only 26 mpg we called GMC and took the Terrain in for service. Also filed complaint with GMC. Was told their was nothing they could do. The engine makes noises and runs rough and stalls at times mostly in the mornings. After service now we get only 25 mpg.

13 Engine Noise problem of the 2010 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 07/30/2010

Noticed noise coming from engine, took too dealer and was advised nothing wrong. 2010. Took too another dealer, told nothing wrong and vehicle would soon be out of warranty at (36,000 miles) contacted gm, was advised warranty until (100,000 miles). Returned to dealer, cam actuators replaced was told "fixed". Returned to dealer within a month or so, same problem. Cam actuators replaced, was told "fixed" contacted gm regarding lemon law, refused to replace advised them vehicle still making noise. Returned to dealer again, dealer claimed vehicle was fine. Gm offered a $2,000. 00 owner loyalty but refused any further repair or replacement of my vehicle. Recently received a letter from GMC (dated September 2014) advising of the problems that I have had since first month I owned vehicle, and I purchased brand new! October 23, 2014 sent letter to GMC (certified mail/return receipt requested) requesting they either respond and repair or replace vehicle or I would file complaints and do my best to get a class action suit started. As of today 11/21/2014, I have not received any response from GMC. I do not have the finances to just go buy vehicles, I have disabled people in the household and this was to be a long term "reliable" vehicle, instead it has been a joke! vehicle has stalled in traffic numerous times, decided to drop speed and have no power to barely move. This is one of the avenues I am taking, I will also be forwarding copies of all of the repairs and letters to senators, congressman etc.
