The contact owns a 2010 GMC Terrain. The contact was driving at an undisclosed speed, when she heard a rattling noise and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was taken to richard kay superstore (1935 pearman dairy rd, anderson, SC 29625) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that piston rings failure caused excessive oil consumption, there was coolant in the oil, and the engine was internally cracked. While driving to work on the freeway, engine began making a knocking/rattling sound; checked dipstick the next morning and there was no oil on it. Oil had just been changed 2,500 miles previously. Vehicle is consuming oil at an abnormally high, about one quart per 500 miles, and has no warning light to alert the driver when the oil level is too low. We are at risk of experiencing engine failure at any time while driving. We have discovered this to be a common issue after our other vehicle of the same year, make and model suffered catastrophic engine failure linked to low oil pressure. Vehicle has 93,400 miles and we have owned it since April 2020. This model year vehicle is known to be equipped with faulty piston ring assemblies which lead to excessive oil consumption. Additionally, there is no oil pressure sensor to alert the driver to the low oil; consequently, this misleads the owner into operating the vehicle with inadequate oil levels and causing engine damage. Complete engine failure can occur suddenly, creating an enormous safety hazard; we are lucky we were not driving at highway speeds or in heavy traffic at the time it occurred. Gm issued a special coverage adjustment, but it was not nearly adequate to cover the extent of damage that can and does occur as a result of this defect, leaving many drivers stuck with unreliable, unsafe vehicles or astronomically expensive repairs.

After a 2 hour highway drive I noticed the vehicle began running loud, a rattling noise coming from the engine as I was getting off the highway. After parking and shutting the vehicle down and letting it rest, I went to restart it. Again it was still loud but quickly shut itself off and would not start back up. Upon inspection, the timing chain went out causing, to quote the service manager, "catastrophic engine damage" that was well beyond able to be repaired.
Vehicle consumes 2 quarts of all every 1500 miles only had the truck fora year and a half. Also it has this terrible rattling noise.
While driving back from work, in a 2010 2. 4l GMC Terrain purchased at star Buick GMC, the car was making a horrible rattling noise, which has occurred several times. Stopping at a red light caused the entire car to shut down. It would not turn over and I was in the middle of rush-hour traffic with a car that wouldn't respond. Several times over the years I have taken my car to the joycekoons GMC dealership for required maintenance and service, because the timing chain was damaged, and the car appears to be losing significant amounts of oil between oil changes. This time when having the vehicle towed to the dealership I'm told that the entire engine needs replacement because metal has gotten inside, and conveniently I'm 3 months outside of my powertrain warranty. This sort of issue puts lives at risk (engine failure in traffic) and I would like the govt. To investigate so that others do not suffer from this problem in the future.
I have a 2013 GMC Terrain. I bought it used in 2014. It had one previous owner. When I bought this car, I didn't notice the abnormal noise it makes. While the car is either in driver or reverse, it makes a weird ticking noise coming from under the front hood. The noise goes away in park. However, the noise can only be heard when the car idols at a certain rpm. The car makes a rattle like sound when the rpms are low, like between 500 to 1500. For example: when I'm cruising down town at speeds of about 25-45mph, I can here the rattle sound. When I back into my garage, the noise can be heard even louder because the garage amplifies the sound. When I use cruise control to accelerate, it does not make this noise. Only when I put my foot on the gas pedal. When I take my food off the gas, or speed up, the sound goes away. It's not a low oil tick sound. It's a little different, like something is loose and rattling. This noise has always been there but it took me a while to realize it.
I have taken my Terrain to the dealership a countless number of times for various repairs. The latest issue is the "engine power is reduced!" notification. While I was at a complete stop, I heard an extremely loud rattling noise come from under the hood of my car. I turned the ignition off to see if the noise would stop. To my surprise the car did not immediately restart. After turning the key several times the car started but with an even louder rattling noise. I tried to later take the car to the mechanic only to find that the car would not crank again. After repeatedly trying to crank the car, it finally started. I was not able to drive faster than 15 miles per hour. I later found out that I needed much more than a catalyic converter (GMC dealership advised that this may be the issue), instead I needed a new engine that may not be covered although I was still within my factory warranty. This car is horrible stay far, far away. . .
I purchased my 2010 GMC Terrain in may 2013. After a few weeks of having the truck. I heard a rattling noise. I took it back to where I purchased it and they said I was out of oil. From may - oct. I have had to have 4 oil changes which my mileage was now 52,000. The service light never came on but could hear a rattling sound. They recently did a consumption test on the truck and they say everything looks fine. Now when I stop at a light or stop sign, my truck shakes as though it is going to turn off. It does this randomly. Of course they could not duplicate it when they test drove it. My light does not always illuminate and my speaker on the driver side will be static when I start up the truck. Needless to say , having the truck for only a few months and seeing this many issues is a huge concern, after reading all the complaints I am truly concerned this is not the truck that is going to last very long, even though I paid good money for it. Very disappointing. I have talked to many people who have had to have the engine replaced. Instead of going through all the repairs that seems like the ideal solution. Its odd when you read the other complaints, it seems even GMC doesn't know how to fix their own issues or don't know what is causing these problems. I read that GMC Terrains have had 131 bulletins wow.
The issue is only happening on 2011 I-4 2. 4l engines. Many people with this engine (terrain and equinoxs for a couple) have the same issue. The vehicle makes a rattling noise when starting up. . Its intermittant. Also I have had (as others have) had the car stall and give an check engine light with code p0011. The car makes the rattling when car is cold or hot. . I have it happen at least once a day. Gm had a tech. Bulletin out on it in Feb. 2011. The fix did not take care of it. In June 2011 gm put out another tb saying 'they are aware of the issue, have no fix yet'. . Again this is happening on alot of these vehicles. . As of right now, gm is not helping me with this. . Just that they are aware and will let me know. . In the meantime, im driving a new car that makes a horrible noise, I dont know what internal damage its causing, and im afraid its going to stall again, in traffic and I will have an accident. . .
