36 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

Powering steering on 2005 Honda Odyssey minivan is extremely hard to steer at lower speeds. There is a serious issue with steering pump as evidenced by service bulletin 07-005. The steering wheel will make whining, buzzing and strange noises and eventually stop functioning. There should be a recall to fix this problem and not just a service bulletin as this is a known and common issue among 05-08 Honda Odyssey minivans.

37 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/24/2010

Steering wheel in Honda Odyssey 2006 malfunction. Steering wheel locks and gets very tight at low speeds and cause van to get stuck in a position and one has to turn the wheel real hard or accelerate to change position. Especially difficult when maneuvering the van in parking lots or making sharp turns at traffic lights. At low speeds the power steering pump does not pump enough fluid according to dealer. The failure occurs always a low speeds and it leads to steering wheel getting stuck or becoming very tight to turn thereby causing the car to get stuck in one place. I reported the problem to Honda and said this is manufacturing defect and a huge safety issue which needs to be addressed. All they did was state it is a manufacturing defect. I almost could not turn at the traffic signal and could have got hit by the car behind me a few days back and also could not turn into a street in traffic and almost got hit by another car behind me since I could not move. Honda USA tells its consumers that they do not cover manufacturing defects leading to safety issues if vehicle is out of warranty. Soon enough this is going to lead to a lot of steering issues and you can check the web with the search term "Honda Odyssey 2006 steering issues" and you will find many incidents as related to the power steering pump. Steering is the crucial part of any vehicle and such callousness on part of Honda definitely calls for a investigation before we see a lot of accidents due a steering wheel getting stuck. The dealers diagnosis after check up was to replace the steering pump so that the pump will push enough fluid at low speeds and not cause the steering wheel to get stuck. There is a potential that this can also occur at high speeds but for me it happens a low speeds. Honda also does not allow consumers to talk to senior persons for resolution and stated consumer has reached end of line once it hits their phone system.

38 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2007 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/13/2010

In 2008, had my 2007 Honda Odyssey touring was serviced by gilroy Honda due to a faulty power steering pump. At that time, they had replaced the faulty pump as it was found to be causing the sticky driving during slow speeds. This issue is not noticed on high speeds since there are no big/wide turns needed at that speed. The van is normally driven by my wife and I seldom use it. I recently used it (2nd week of oct '10) when I have to take the van to gilroy Honda for a regular service. During that time, I noticed a very sticky steering at low speeds. Very similar to what I noticed in 2008. I also noticed that at low speeds, it tends to pull towards the right. I also notice that it is very difficult to get out of a tight spot (like in a parking lot) because of this. I was worried about it since my wife is driving it everytime and that she might hit something or somebody during a slow maneuver. I complained about it to gilroy Honda but they said they will not replace it for me as it is no longer under warranty. I asked whether or not they have a recall about this but said no. I think this has to be a safety recall as it can lead to crash or even worse injuries.

39 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 09/15/2010

2006 Honda Odyssey. Power steering pump causing humming sound when turning the steering to the left or right. There is a TSB 07-005 for this. It's a known issue (defective part) and there are numerous owners who have reported the same on the internet, but Honda has not recalled the vehicles.

40 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2007 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/12/2010

Power steering is non-existent at parking speeds. While parking, turning or maneuvering at very slow speeds, the only way to turn the car is to "muscle" the steering wheel around. Power steering engages as speed increases. Mentioned numerous times to dealer and they claim that is the way a van drives. The vehicle already was repaired from lack of oil placed in steering column when it was built. Lack of manufacturer response is concerning me. My fathers 2006 had same problem and he was told Honda uses a bigger"screen" now somewhere in the steering pump and it is a known problem.

41 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/05/2010

Loss of power steering at low speeds especially when trying to park. Was intermittent and progressed over two weeks. Brought to independent mechanic told nothing wrong with power steering fluid or components. One week later brought to Honda dealer told needs new power steering pump -car has 85,000 km. The pump should not give out so soon. $700. 00 repair. Asked about technical bulletins about power steering and mechanic said it only concerns the reservoir and that is not my issue. Will have to have it fixed but feel there is a known problem and I should not bear all the cost.

42 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2010 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/10/2010

At 7000 miles, the transmission made a very loud grinding and rattling noise, shaking the vehicle, when shifting from r to d. This was repeated at 25,000 miles several months after the software upgrade. In July of 2010, vehicle was brought in for memory steering, they replaced the right strut. November of 2010, the vehicle steering is unstable at low speeds when turning left. The sensation is either over-activity of the power steering pump or under-activity. Vehicle seems very unstable under low speed driving conditions, especially on bumpy roads. Vehicle taken to dealer, they could not identify anything abnormal.

43 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2008 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/24/2010

While turning into traffic at a stoplight my power assist for the steering died completely for 4-6 seconds. Throughout the winter I would hear a whine from the power steering when making the two turns out of my garage and onto the street. After those two turns it was silent and worked as it's supposed to. This failure was obviously unexpected and could have resulted in more than a close call if traffic had been heavy. I took the vehicle in to the dealer today and they said the power steering pump was shot because of contamination in the reservoir. The vehicle has 21,383 miles on it and is less than two years old.

Failure Date: 03/20/2010

Power steering problem and pump failure.

45 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/05/2010

After approximately a one hour drive on the interstate, the steering got very heavy in the outlet store parking lot. My wife narrowly missed a row of cars at low speed (<5mph) as she pulled in, since she could not turn the wheel as the steering got extremely heavy. Afterward, I tried some low speed manuevers and noticed extremely heavy steering. After it cooled off in a few hours, the steering seemed to be more normal. Note this steering pump was changed about 1. 5yrs ago since it was making alot of noise and vibrating.

46 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/27/2010

My 2005 Honda Odyssey has a failed power steering pump. The pump creates a loud whine while driving, more notable in colder weather. Turning can become sluggish at times. It occurs every time we drive the van. I have a quote to repair the pump for $590 plus tax. I will be bringing it in to get repaired soon.

47 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/07/2010

My 2005 Honda Odyssey had a loud whine when turning, after driving the vehicle for about an hour. Turning was also sluggish at times. The dealer stated that it was a failed power steering pump and reservoir. The van has an extended warranty and so I was not charged for the replacement.

48 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2007 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/05/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Honda Odyssey. While driving at low speeds of 5 mph, the vehicle lost power steering without any warning. The steering wheel became difficult to turn. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who stated that the steering pump was defective . The steering pump was replaced at the owners expense. The failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage was 49,439.

49 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/02/2010

I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey touring with 100,000 miles on it. I paid about 50% of the cost to replace the power steering pump at around 50-60k miles on the car. Right now at 100k miles, I'm currently running on my 3rd set of power steering pump and the pump is acting up on me again after only 10k miles on it. So each pump lasted average of 15,000 miles. And the warranty is too short that whenever my pump goes out, I exceeded my warranty only about 3-4k miles, which Honda denies to cover the whole thing.

50 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 01/25/2010

2006 Honda Odyssey - power steering pump. The power steering pump whines, buzzes, or hums and intermittently becomes very hard to steer. Mechanic said power steering pump was defective and has seen this many times on 2005-07 Odysseys. Local Honda dealer confirmed that this was a common problem, but that Honda had not issued a recall.

52 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/17/2009

Issues with power steering. When driving long distances a loud noise will start emitting from power steering. This has happened on multiple occasions over last five years. Have taken my Honda to at least two dealerships about problem. Never diagnosed until recently. Was told that power steering pump is defective. Honda states no longer under warranty. Very expensive repair. Dealership will not help with cost. Contacted Honda corporate customer service and was offered no help with cost of repair. Will no longer drive my Honda any long distances. Also have had brake and parking brake issues with this car over past five years.

53 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2007 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/12/2009

2007 Honda Odyssey. When at a slow speed, the power steering pump may not be operating at power and you lose almost all, if not all power steering assist. It has nearly caused an accident for me turning into driveways and parking spaces multiple times already (at least 3 incidents that were near-misses). Upon reporting the issue to Honda, it was difficult to duplicate in a limited test and I was simply told that was "normal" in my vehicle. There are dozens of reports with over a hundred people just in one internet forum for Honda Odyssey owners and this is apparently an issue with 2006 through 2009 models, and possibly even 2010 models. Honda has reportedly replaced power steering pumps, power steering fluid reservoirs, and a few other components for those who had warranties, although it appears the issue remains or is only resolved until 10k - 20k miles later when it resurfaces.

54 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/10/2009

Power steering pump is noisy at low rpm and vehicle is hard to turn at slow speeds. Taking van to dealer for warranty work.

55 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2007 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/10/2009

2 complaints, first one is the power steering pump went at 35000 miles. Honda did replace it under warranty. But the pump in now at 60,000 miles is going bad. Second complaint, the front left hub bearing went bad way too early, 50,000 miles. This is a very dangerous problem. Called Honda and the local Honda dealership several times and received no help at all. They would not cover this part or the workmanship to replace it. Now at 65,000 miles the van is making the same noise so I am assuming another hub bearing is going bad. I have never purchase a Honda before this one, I will never buy another.

56 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/05/2009

My Honda Odyssey has a manufacture's defect associated with the power steering system. It has an inconsistent buzz, whine, hum that can be heard predominantly at lower speeds. At times, the steering becomes tight making it difficult to steer the car. I have read about the service bulletins: TSB 2007 for the steering reservoir, and TSB 2010 for the steering pump. I will be calling the local dealer with hopes of correcting a poor design by Honda.

57 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/28/2009

Power steering pump failing may cause accident.

58 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 09/30/2009

During 9/2009, I was informed by other driver's of my Honda Odyssey 2006 of difficulty turning my steering wheel at low speeds. I wondered about it and began to notice that I also had difficulty turning the steering wheel at low speeds especially while entering or leaving a parking space. In 9/2011, I had the steering examined and was told by the Honda dealership that the power steering pump needs to be replaced and is inoperable at low speeds. Apparently, american Honda issued a warranty extension for this issue of which I was not informed. This warranty extended the time frame for replacement of the power steering pump to 100,000 miles or 7 years. By 2011, I had 160,602 miles on my vehicle and was closer to the 100,000 mile mark back in 2009. In 2012, I was informed by another car repair shop of the warranty extension with encouragement to call american Honda. I did and was told that I didn't qualify, but could find document of the diagnosis and call back. In 2015, I find my receipt from Honda dealership from 9/2011 diagnosing the problem. I call american Honda. Their representative is polite, listens to my story, places me on hold then returns to the line and tells me that this will still not be covered. I have been "negligent" since not contacting american Honda back after my first call in 2012 or having the car repaired for this issue. Obviously, I want american Honda to assist since this is not an inexpensive repair. I understand their stance and wish they were more responsive to loyal customers. I have not experienced an accident due to the power steering pump not working correctly, but have worried at times especially when making turns and backing out of spaces. Through this complaint, I am hoping that further investigation might occur which will cause the replacement of the power steering pump to become a recall versus a warranty extension.

59 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 09/23/2009

The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated as he was driving approx. 10 to 15 mph, he could turn the steering wheel but he had to force it to turn. No warning light came on and there was a noise when turning the steering wheel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was told to replace the steering pump and the reservoir which will cost $800 for the repairs. The contact told the dealer he was not willing to pay that expense. The manufacturer was called at least three times but stated the mileage was over the warranty and there is no recall for the failure. The failure mileage was 85,000.

60 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 09/15/2009

2006 Honda Odyssey ex-l, steering wheel at low speeds freeze and does not turn in any direction. It happens very often on the highway when there is slow moving traffic, in a parking lot and reversing. I was told by the dealer who wanted 600 to fix this issue as being steering pump related issue. We had an extended service plan in which the dealer did a power steering flush that did not help at all. We wen to the dealer with this issue after about 1 year latter and since then there was nothing done regarding this. Recently our Honda warranty expired in July 2009 and the miles on the car are about 35k. All these days we were able to atleast navigate the wheel even it was tight but recently since last 1 month the car on slow speeds or on neutral does not turn the wheel at all. I request NHTSA to please investigate this issue with Honda vans. I spoke to several people and couple of them did mention this same problem. I feel very uncomfortable with the problem. When I take it to the dealer he avoided until the warranty is over and now is trying to cheat us.

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey. While driving approximately 30 mph, she noticed it became difficult to control the steering wheel and park the vehicle. 62 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

2005 Honda Odyssey going on 4th power steering pump. Dealer replaced first two, within weeks whining noise was back. Change pump again, once again whining noise returned. Now not only is there a whining noise but I have occasional stiffness in the steering wheel when travel at 50 + mph. Van currently has 120,000 mile, pumps replaced at 20,000, 45,000, 70, 000. Know of others with same issue. This needs to be recalled. There is obviously an issue with the equipment or design.

63 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2007 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/20/2009

Power steering issue on 2007 Honda Odyssey. No power steering ability in parking, k turn or parallel park. Faster speeds it kicks in, slower speeds you have to muscle it through. Told by Honda service department that no recall to date, need to replace pump and reservoir. It's only 3 yrs old. . . This is not a normal wear and tear item. Google resulted in several consumer complaints on power steering. Although it did not cause an accident it is certainly a manufacturing defect. Please research further.

64 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/26/2009

I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey minivan which I purchased brand new in 2005 from the hall Honda virginia beach, va in 2005. There have been times that while driving I would hear a whining type of noise. When I took it to the dealership for an oil change they tried to find the noise by test driving it but it did nut duplicate as it is sporadic. Now I have taken it to the dealership for a state inspection and during their preventive check they have stated they have found metal shavings in the power steering pump reservoir which is an indication of the power steering pump going bad. It will cost me $700 to replace the pump and the reservoir plus flush and fill it. I have also discovered through my research that there is a known problem with the 2005 Honda Odyssey having defective power steering pumps and the wining noise is one of the indications of it going bad. . 68 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2007 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/10/2009

Honda Odyssey. After approximately 30 minutes of driving, the power steering pump whines, buzzes or hums. Honda issued a bulletin (Honda service bulletin 07-005 applicable to all 05-07 and some 08 vans) stating the power steering pump reservoir is defective, requiring a new pump, filter and fluid. However, they will only provide replacement if under warranty. My concern is the metal shaving or other particles my impact the steering and cause the driver to loose control.

69 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/01/2009

At low speeds, the power steering pump on my 2006 Honda Odyssey ex-l looses all ability to turn. This is especially troublesome when trying to park. The only way to alleviate this is to put the transmission in neutral, apply a foot to the brake, and apply slight pressure to the throttle pedal. This obviously speeds up the power steering pump which allows me to turn the steering wheel. This is not a safe solution to perform for any reason.
