4 Steering Failed problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 07/21/2011

I have owned my 2005 Honda Odyssey touring since it was new. I replaced the power steering pump at 34k miles. I have put 3 sets of tires on my minivan even though I rotate every other oil change. All done by the dealer. My van will loose steering at times when it is cold and makes a loud noise under the hood. In addition, the steering will shake when driving as well as when braking. I just replaced the tires which included a front-end alignment and tire balance. The shimmy, vibration and shaking back/forth is still there. The brakes and rotors have been cleared by dealer and they cannot figure out what is wrong. This has been an on going problem with my Odyssey. The water pump started at 15k miles and each time I took it back they did not know the issue and changed the water pump at 34k miles. The tire shaking, vibrating and shimmy has been happening since 55k miles and the van now has 105k. I am tired of the problem. It has gotten so bad that I don't wan to slam on my brakes because the steering wheel starts to fail. This is a Honda and is suppose to last. Honda needs to stand behind this problem. As I search the web there are many Honda owners with the same issue but Honda will not do a recall. Honda needs to understand that this is a safety issue. Steering. People can die from this. In addition, Honda needs to understand that many with these problems will be purchasing another van in the near future and won't buy a Honda due the lack of attention to these matters.

5 Steering Failed problem of the 2008 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

Back in December of 2010, my Honda Odyssey (VIN# 5fnrl38708b034339) began to become difficult to steer. This problem occurred randomly and intermittently, and seemed to occur more often at slow speeds. On 12/21/10, I took the vehicle to bloomfield Honda, an authorized Honda dealer, and was told that the steering pump system had failed and had to be replaced. Since the vehicle was out of warranty (41,200 miles on the odometer), Honda refused to take responsibility for the replacement of this system and refused to take responsibility for this defect. In 2008 I had the same problem with my 2005 Honda Odyssey (virtually the same body style and model of vehicle, VIN#5fnrl38405b075572). At approximately 36,000 miles, the steering pump system had to be replaced. I consider this to be a defect in the steering system of this model, and I believe it to be a safety hazard.

6 Steering Failed problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/09/2010

Since early 2010, the steering pump in my 2006 Odyssey has been making an intermittant whining noise. When it makes this noise, the steering wheel becomes difficult to turn. A few days ago it became bad enough to take in to the dealer for service. Prior to taking it in, I noted that Honda has 2 tech service bulletins for this issue, one to the replace the pump (Dec 2010) and one to replace the steering fluid reservior (2009). The bulletin for the pump specifically stated that the pump design was insufficient to provide enough power for the steering system, and needed to be replaced by a higher power pump with a new part number. I called american Honda to try to get this covered by Honda as a safety issue and a known design defect (bad steering), they offered to pay for $250 out of a $750 total repair bill. My car is approximately 1 1/2 years out of warranty time limit, but under warranty mileage (35000). I feel this is definitely a safety issue (steering) and should be subject to a recall before a steering failure and someone gets injured or worse.

7 Steering Failed problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/30/2009

During low temperature driving after vehicle is warm, the power steering whines loudly. We noticed this condition in the early fall as temperatures fell and the noise has gotten progressively worse. The steering pump was previously replaced at approximately 9200 miles. The vehicle is at the local dealership now having the power steering system flushed, reservoir replaced and new synthetic fluid installed. I am concerned that the steering may have failed during operation causing an accident.
