Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator Problems of Jeep Cherokee - part 1

Vehicle would shut completely off when stopped at a red light. Shifter would not move. I was put a risk on a busy street, stuck at a red light and could not move to a safer location. The second time there were three children in the car when the car shuts off at a red light. The problem has been confirmed by dealer and has been inspected. Check engine light was on, however nothing was showed for about the shifter. Dealer mentioned prndl and harness. I see that there were previous recalls with the Jeep Cherokee but the car is still showing symptoms of them. It’s is not safe for me to drive and I have been without a car for almost 3 months.

Service shifter message has been appearing and at times, all lights on prnd lighting up. The vehicle transmission may still engage or may not. Recent occurrence on 07/13/2013, vehicle took 20 minutes before transmission engaged. Fortunately, I was parked at work, going home. If this occurred on the road, has potential of wreck happening. Jeep dealership leaning towards voltage error, cleaned battery terminals, test drove, could not replicate error. Did not drive until 07/17/2023, service shifter message came back without all prnd lights coming on.

The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while his wife was driving approximately 50 mph with the cruise control activated, the vehicle began to decelerate independently while making an abnormal sound. The contact stated that the 4wd auto warning light was illuminated. The driver was able to continue driving to her destination. The contact also stated while the vehicle was parked, the vehicle shifted out of park(p) into neutral(n). The contact took the vehicle to an unknown local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 46,201.

While driving the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly stops running without any warning. Engine stops. Car just coasts. Prndl indicator (d for drive) on instrument cluster flashes instead of a constant d. Then some sort of messages comes up similar to "shift to neutral to start engine". Car will not restart. Car coasts to stop without power and no power steering. Then I need to turn ignition off. I will then cycle locks (locked then unlocked). Then turn on ignition. From here the car attempts to start but it is not an immediate start up like normal. The gauge needles (speedometer and tachometer) both go all the way to the right while the car attempts to restart but this startup takes about 10+ seconds of attempted cranking to finally restart. This is a long clicking sound before restart. This has happened 3-4 times now in the 30 days. Most recently on a main road where I had to coast without power and power steering to the shoulder. I have not yet been to the dealer. Car is out of warranty.

My service shifter light came on and all the lights on the shifter console came on (prnd21). At first, I could turn the car off to reset it. This was dangerous because I had to pull over wherever I was. As time has gone on it pretty much stays on. My car has 33000 miles on it but is past the 3-year mark. I took it to the dealership and they told me the previous years had this problem but was recalled. It cost me $500. 00 to replace a plastic bezel. I have saved all dealership repair paperwork. The dealership confirmed this is a very common problem.

Service shifter light comes on at intermediate times while driving and all the prnd lights come on. Shut the vehicle off and turn back on and it's good for a while.

Display indicates "service shifter" and all lights on gear selector are lit (prnd). This occurred at 30,000 miles (code u1465 and p1c86-1d) and was serviced by the dealer. Dealer replaced the shifter. Issue is reoccurring at 50,000 miles.

Service shifter and service 4wd lights come up on dash and the shifter prnd lights come on at shifter on start up and while driving and have to cut switch on and off in order to drive it at times.

Console suddenly displayed 'service shifter' message while driving 60 mph on highway. It was dry out. Also all shifter lights prnd lights on solid. I'm at approx 70,000 k. Afraid to stop in right on empty highway late at night, I dtove to nearest service before shutting off engine. Restarting cleared error. As I was on a long road trip, continued on. This error occurred for second time, approx 2000k later. Restarting again cleared. I have not driven since. Saw online hundreds with same issue and no clear fix or recall. Jeep need to address this ASAP.

I was driving and all of my lights came on prnd and then said service shifter. After restarting the car the warning goes off. There are many complaints about this and when you take it in to the dealer they charge $180 to diagnose and then say that it is not the engine so it is not covered under warranty. I have looked online and thousands of people are having the same issue. This needs to be resolved. I am scared to drive my car but don't have $180 every time this light comes on and I'm not knowing what gear I'm in because all of them are highlighted. This has occurred when I was driving on the highway, turning down the street and also while sitting at a stop light.

The service shifter notification came up on the dashboard screen while the vehicle was in motion on the highway, unable to be cleared, and all red lights on shifter were lit up. (prnd) after stopping, turning off vehicle and restarting cleared the message, however, vehicle also continues to jerk in between gears.

Service shifter message comes up in the message center on the dash, and prnd lights up red when vehicle is in motion. Pulling over and turning the engine off sometimes makes the message go away, other times it persists. Problem started at around 11,000 miles. Happens randomly, and dealers cannot replicate the issue.

Purchased a 2018 Jeep Cherokee in may of 2019. A few months in to ownership I had an odd occurrence where all of the lights on my gear shift prnd were all lit up red. And the warning notation on dash said "service shifter". It was alarming but happened once or twice over a period of several months so I thought it was a fluke or mishap. Fast forward to March of 2020, right under a year of ownership and the service shifter problem has become near constant. I will hear a 'ding' in the middle of driving, sometimes at high speeds on the freeway, the gear shifter will turn all red again and the message appears on screen. While this is happening you cannot get anything else to come on the screen. . . . Fuel economy or speed, which I use regularly in my vehicle. ---I contacted my dealership and was told there are no active recalls on this vehicle and that I am out of basic warranty and the powertrain warranty would only cover engine/transmission, thus not helping me in this situation. After hearing that from them I decided to look up this issue online and imagine my surprise to see I am not alone with this issue. I came across numerous similar complaints. Please look into issuing a recall for this issue as it comes on suddenly and is startling when you are driving and it happens. It has become quite an unsettling experience driving this vehicle that I have owned less than a year.

"service shifter" warning comes on while driving on highway, then again on street. The "prnd" lights all light up as well. Vehicle returns to normal after turning off and restarting. Contacted dealer and was told they never heard of it, and if light/warning is not on they will be unable to determine cause.

Service shifter warning comes on along with all prnd lights by gear shift while driving on city street. 32k miles on vehicle.

After starting vehicle and putting it in gear the service shifter light comes on and all the lights on right side of shifter. These lights are for telling you what gear you are in,prnd. It is on after put into gear at all times. It does nt matter that the car is stationary or moving. I have read many complaints about this issue with Jeeps online.

While driving a message came up on the dash "service shifter" while driving in town. The prnd lights are all red. I could not get the message to go away.

Service shifter light came on while driving on a city street and all the lights on the shifter glowed red. Prnd. Drove for a while shut car off and it went away. This has happened twice now . Dealer claims they have never heard of it. By the amount of complaints on line I claim they are lying.

"service shifter" message appeared while driving a short distance from home. Warning was accompanied with red lights on the prndl shifter consol. Car continued to drive normally, so I continued home, and shut off car. After a short time, restarted car, and fault had cleared. With a little research, I have found many complaints from other Jeep Cherokee owners with this same issue, and it is an expensive fix. The car is just past the 360000 mile warranty limit by 70 miles! I am actually surprised I made it that many miles, before this occurred. I will be taking the car in on Monday, but for some reason, I am not hopeful, based on other owner experiences.

All prnd indicator lights on the shifter unit illuminate at once, and stay lit. "service shifter" warning appears on the instrument cluster display. When "service shifter" warning is displayed, cannot be turned off and digital speedometer readings (or other information) are no longer displayed. Prnd shifter indicator lights blink sporadically until warning finally displays. Lights stay illuminated after warning appears. Prnd lights and display warning appear while vehicle is parked/stationary as well as when vehicle is in motion. Started sporadically, roughly 6 months ago (early 2019) and would typically go away if vehicle was turned off and re-started. These warnings now happen daily, every time I start the vehicle, and almost never go away. Upon researching this concern online, it appears that this is a known issue that many have been experiencing since around 2012. Most web inquires indicate that this may be related to a wiring harness? I took to the dealership for service and was told it would be $700 to replace the entire shifter, and that if I do not replace, I could find myself unable to put the vehicle in park. Hoping that this is something that is being investigated and recalled so that I do not have to pay for something that is a recurring, known safety issue.

"service shifter" message came on screen and all gears (prdn) light up red. Vehicle slowed down to a complete stop in middle of two way traffic. Then, another message appeared "to shift vehicle must be stopped" and engine cut off after can no longer accelerate. Have to turn off engine and turn it back on by removing key completely from ignition and starting it again. Very scary. This has happened multiple times. First time, it was inside of a parking lot driving in circles looking for a parking spot. Second time while turning left at a two way intersection. . . Car stopped midway into oncoming traffic, third time was also turning left (coincidental) after crossing over into oncoming traffic and safely reached the street I was turning into, but vehicle slowed down completely in transit to said street and could not accelerate anymore. . . Was going at a base speed of maybe 3-5 mph. Took it to dealership first time and they said it was a system update issue. It was not because issue occured again. Car is in shop again now and they said have to replace prndl switch. Not sure what that is. I saw a recall done for a very similar issue on the 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokee, recall code is Chrysler s55. But dealer said my car is not a part of that recall. Please research issue. I have come across 30+ forums online where 2015 Jeep Cherokees are experiencing this same "service shifter" issue. Service shifter light came on. Prndl red. Unable to disable this warning to see speed, gas, etc. Vehicle was operating fine otherwise.

When shifting into park all the indicator lights for all gears (prnd) light up while in drive. The vehicle is not in sport mode.

Very frequently while driving the �service shifter� light will come on and all of the lights on the prndl will be solid red, which does not allow the operator to be able to safely shift from drive to park etc. The service shifter light appears on the drive control screen and is unable to be cleared. I have also noticed the engine occasionally lurching when accelerating from a stop when the service shifter light is on. At first the �service shifter� light would only come on occasionally, maybe every month or so, but now it comes only 80% of the time I drive it. It is completely random when it will appear, it happens while driving down the highway after 2 hours of driving. It happens while making my 5 minute commute to work, sometimes it appears as soon as I turn on my car. The only way to clear the message is to pull over and turn the car off and then back on, and this is not always effective.

Service shifter message appeared on dash and all the prnd lights turned red when I started the vehicle first thing in the morning after sitting all night in the garage. Turned vehicle off and on with no change. Drove it 40 miles to work and when I left at the end of the day, the message was gone and all the lights were back to normal.

Vehicle was in motion. Screen displays service shifter. All lights on the prndl next to the shifrer are lit simultaneously.

"service shifter" message appeared on driver display while red lights next to shifter prnd all light up. Occurs intermittently while driving. Clears itself when car is restarted, but may occur soon again. Has occurred 10-20 times over past 3 months.

Just bought a used 2017 Jeep Cherokee trailhawk 36867 miles and the service shifter light has come up on the dashboard while driving down the highway and all lights next to prnd turned red. Pulled over and stopped turned off engine, put in park and the vehicle started rolling. Turned engine on/off twice then got it into park then back into drive. Made it home and vehicle still has all lights next to prnd on and service shifter message remains.

When car is put into neutral, the sport shifter mode is activated and occasionally when put into reverse, service shifter message appears on dash and all prnd lights appear lit. Doesn't appear to affect driving but is worrisome. Current mileage is 47,000.
