I recently had a svc 4wd light come on in my 2020 Jeep Cherokee which has 75,750 miles. Then while driving a warning light kept coming on telling me that the 4wd service is unavailable and to service 4wd. Well - I took it to the dealership and was told that the ptu needed to be replaced and that unfortunately it was not covered under a recall because it only covered the years 2017 - 2019 and some 2020 Cherokees. I feel that this ptu that is defective should have a recall issued for the 2020 year as well since it's unrealistic to think that the ptu would fail on a vehicle that has only had the 4wd even used maybe five times in a 4 1/2 year span. I would like you to check into this issue that I feel should be a recall and would/could cause serious accidents due to sudden loss of power, or ability to move vehicle due to transmission failures. I feel that Jeep/Chrysler knows about this issue and have been slowly issuing recalls, beginning from 2014, then 2016 and then 2017-2019 and now I feel the 2020 and possibly later years should be covered. I was at the dealership 4/30/25. At this time I cannot afford to repair this ptu issue and am taking a chance to continue to drive my vehicle since mechanically it is working right now - just providing me with the warning lights/beeps. Please look into this and advise.

Transmission failed driving down a two lane hill into town at 35-40 mph. Engine light came on. Transmission did not want to re-engage after complete stop. Felt like transmission was starting out in 5th or 6th gear. Had vehicle towed to dealer. Dealer has estimated replacement of transmission to $5000. That's 25% the purchase price of the vehicle. If transmission purchased from somewhere else, it still has to go back to dealer for computer programming.
Transmission does not downshift smoothly during moving turns at intersections. When approaching a turn and gas is off/brake is on, and still rolling at low speed (~5 mph) and then clear to proceed, brake is off/gas is back on, first shift is very violent, feels like I'm getting re-ended. Also at high speeds when in hill climb and situation where gas off to coast for a bit is required, violent upshift occurs. Feels like I'm being re-ended in both of these scenarios. I fear the transmission will fail on me during one of these slow speed situations in an intersection causing an accident or on the highway leaving me stranded. I have taken it too Jeep dealer here in scottsdale and they say nothing is wrong and that this zf 9 speed transmission is acting normally. I don't agree with that compared to many other cars I have driven over my lifetime. This transmission is not normal. This happens everyday. The only way to make it not do this is to stop for 1 second to allow the transmission to settle and then proceed which is not normal driving. I've owned vehicle for 1 year and behavior happens daily.
When backing out of flat driveway onto a downhill slope the vehicle transmission fails to go into drive, seeming to be hung up in neutral for 3 maybe 4 seconds then into drive. This problem has also presented itself when backing out of a parking space on any grade. Transmission and engine were flashed by dealer at 5200 miles. No improvement. Mechanics at dealership said they are not aware of the problem. At 5215 miles she going back to shop. Same issue. Vehicle is not safe to drive!.

However, the repairs did not correct the failure. The contact stated the when driving at various speed the gears shifted hard and jerk and hesitated to shift into gear. When the engine was started up the vehicle enteredlimp mode and the service transmission light illuminated and the service parking brake light illuminated, and the check engine light also illumiated. The vehicle was back to same dealer numerous times for the for the failure. The dealer updated the engine and transmission modules and software several times. However, the failure was not corrected. The manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was 85,000. Li.
The transmission failed while driving 60mph on the highway. It would not accelerate so I had to pull over to the side of the road. I turned the car off for a few minutes and then restarted it. This seemed to reboot the system and I was able to drive home. I took the car to the dealer and was told it was a "glitch" and the vehicle appeared to be working properly to them so no repair was done. A few months later it happened again except turning it off and on only worked for a few miles before happening again. I took it back to the dealer and they said it was due to a software update. What kind of car shuts down on the highway due to a software update!!! this issue put my family in extremely dangerous situations and Jeep refuses to own up to having a faulty transmission.

The service shifter warning light displays. This causes the use of the sport mode transmission to fail. It also prevents the driver from viewing all display features, low gas, oil/transmission temperature, etc. , and prevents shifting the Jeep to snow mode. When it comes on, all of the red lights next to my shifter come on (p, r, d, etc). The light comes on almost every time while I am driving. This can happen at all speed, city, highway, driving straight and turning. Placing the vehicle in reverse, in snow mode, and use of the manual sport mode. It happens at random times. There have been thousands of complaints from Jeep owners on various forums and the automaker refuses to issue a recall. There are other more extreme and dangerous causes that have been reported by other Jeep owners, such as the emergency brake enabling while driving and transmission locked in a specific gear.

Transmission failed, car stopped while driving. On highway. Restarted and had hard shifting and stalling problems. This is second transmission in this car, first was replaced after one year driving.
Transmission fails constantly, while driving! very dangerous and Jeep doesn't know how to fix this safety issue. My Jeep has only 31,600 miles!.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. While driving 70 mph, various warning indicators randomly flashed. The speed decreased and the transmission gears failed to shift from drive to park. The contact coasted the vehicle off the road. The gear was difficult to change from drive to park, so the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle. The crash intermittent being disabled, service brakes, and service transmission warning indicators flashed. The vehicle was driven to the dealer. The dealer was unable to schedule an appointment so the vehicle was left at the dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN and failure mileage were not available.
First transmission failure at 59k miles at speed on freeway transmission just replaced again at 73k miles.
I had been driving my vehicle all night when all of the sudden out of no where the transmission service came onto my screen on the dash and my Jeep lost power and the brakes locked up and said that I need to service the brakes and the transmission. At the time this happened I was just starting to come to a complete stop at the light. This is really dangerous and needs to be reported that the transmission has failed or is not working correctly in this Jeep. What is someone gets killed?.
Transmission failure display on the dash. The car would not move after being put in reverse. The car was stationary in the garage. This the second time this happened. The car has been towed to the dealer twice . The transmission is doing the same thing as the first time . I am afraid to go on any trips because the car is not reliable . Mileage on the vehicle is 11,000. The vehicle is presently on a recall for the problems with the transaxle wire harness. S55/NHTSA 16v-529. The transmission jerks and hesitates on starts.
Car leased December 2013. In August of 2016 service 4wd light came on. Was dismissed multiple times by dealer. Car purchased September 2016. Light on again and was told transmission failure. Transmission replaced April 2018. After replacement car continued to jerk, shift loudly, shift itself when turned on. Dealer refused to service. Now going into arbitration with fcs.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. While driving at an unknown speed, the transmission failed and the vehicle would not accelerate. The check engine and abs indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 11,772.
I have a Jeep Cherokee latitude. It has been recalled 5 times and today shutdown abruptly with a transmission failure. It put me at considerable risk as I was in the middle of fast moving traffic. This is unacceptable. I called the manufacturer and asked that Jeep extend my warranty for three years as I have no confidence in the vehicle. So far they have refused. How outrageous. Yes, purchase our vehicle that will put you at risk and expect no compensation form Jeep. How do we start a class action suit?.
Transmission failed 07/21/2016. Car refused to start and had both check engine and service transmission messages. Dealer replaced transmission with 2016 model that was supposed to solve the issues. At this point the car has 19,866 miles showing. On 5/29/2019, same problem showed up, car refused to start, check engine and service transmission messages. After a week at the dealership I was advised that the best guess? was I needed to replace the control module at a cost o 900. 00 since it is out of warranty. I asked if this did not fix it would they buy the module back and was advised no. Currently the car is sitting in the driveway, I am afraid to attempt to drive it and fear the transmission will fail while I am on the highway and become involved in an accident as I attempt to get it off the road. The transmission failure keeps the engine from operating.
Transmission failed while driving at about 60 mph on a highway. Lost power, lost power steering. Could barely steer car to the side of the road. Turned off, waited, restarted and it ran fine. Service transmission light came on for a while, then went off after about 50 miles. This happened for the second time on June 27, 2016. After the first time several months ago we took the vehicle to the dealership for a software update, this is really dangerous. Losing power and power steering while traveling down a highway at 60 mph could result in an accident if it happened in traffic. Luckily for us, traffic was light so we we able to get off the road on both times this has happened. Must be a software defect, as the engine is running fine.
I was attempting to make a left turn on a busy city road when the car suddenly stopped dead without any warning signs. An oncoming tractor trailer had to swerve out of the way to avoid killing me. The aaa tow truck driver commented that it was the transmission that failed and it had set off the emergency brake. He noted that he had responded to the exact same scenario with a Jeep Cherokee the week before. The car has now been at the dealer for 21 days without any good results in sight. They have already replaced the new transmission which they installed admitting that the new transmission is faulty. I am aware of a class action suit for this same problem in their 2014 models and there will undoubtedly be one, if there isn't already, for the 2015 and 2016 models. They are not admitting the problem and will not admit the problem until there are several fatalities. Since I do not plan to be among them, I want a refund, not another piece of junk.
2015 Jeep Cherokee transmission failed to provide forward motion after initial acceleration during left hand turns with oncoming traffic, resulting in near collision on multiple occasions (11). The condition presents on any/all road types and conditions when turning left and occasionally when progressing straight from a stopped position. Oncoming vehicles have had to stop to avoid a head on collision. Dealer has been made aware of defect and the vehicle has been in for reprogramming on two occasions without proper repair. Current mileage is 22,147 miles.
Transmission has failed twice in less than 100 miles. We are on our thrid transmission.
For the second time in a month the transmission failed. Multiple vehicle warning systems started sounding include "check transmission", "put vehicle in park, then select gear", accompanied by warning chimes, the engine light, etc. It occurred during rush-hour traffic in washington, DC in 4 lanes of traffic - the vehicle transmission died. The same thing happened just over a month ago; the dealer claimed they did a software fix previously.
Vehicle regularly has delayed shifting, loss of acceleration, etc. During regular traffic conditions. This has been very dangerous on multiple occasions during traffic merges and crossings with near collisions. The transmission itself in the new Cherokee is an overly complicated and poorly performing product that fca and its dealers refuse to fix. It's only a matter of time until my Cherokee's transmission fails and/or causes an accident.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. While driving 50 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but failed to respond. The service transmission warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed and the valve body and parking brake needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred two additional times. On another occasion, the headlights became inoperable and the "head lamp out" warning message illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the body control module and head lamps needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. While driving 15 mph, the automatic power locks failed to operate without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for repair; however, the specifics of the repair were unknown. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 26,000.
Transmission failure while driving. Car failed to accelerate while on a city street, transmission and parking light came on. When car was able to be re-started, loud "clunk" sound occurred when gears shifted. Car had to be towed to dealership. Fear for safety of me and my two children to drive car and have transmission fail and car stall while on the road. After researching and reading similar incidents that have occurred to countless others over a two year period, it is appalling that nothing has been done to warn customers of the deadly dangers of this car or that a recall or buyout has not happened. Many of us are now stuck with these dangerous vehicles with no recourse as of yet.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that the vehicle accelerated approximately to 2,000 rpms when attempting to decelerate. As a result, the vehicle surged forward. The contact had to depress the brake pedal to avoid the acceleration and make the vehicle decelerate instead. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer (levanon Jeep Chrysler Dodge ram) where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed and needed to be reprogrammed. The transmission was reprogrammed, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 51,968.
I bought my car 3/29/2015. My car has been in the shop 4 times in the 6 months since I have bout it. It had the transmission valve replaced, the harness replaces, and after all of that still did not fix anything. My car is currently having a new transmission put in ( only has 5,000) miles on it! so many costumers are having the same issues with their 2015 Cherokees, they are unsafe and have caused many accidents from transmission failures. They need to be recalled!!!.
Mileage 26,000+ transmission failed while driving on the highway this morning. Revs went very high but couldn't generate speed to keep up with traffic (check engine light came on). . . Car didn't move past 2nd gear. Having read all the complaints about transmission issues cause by the lack of "mature" software as cited by fiat Chrysler ceo sergio marchionne, I'm wondering why the vehicle hasn't been recalled to prevent a potential dangerous event from occurring. I was lucky I could get off the highway this morning and get to a dealership close by. At this stage - the vehicles has had a recall for the radio r40), wipers, liftgate. . What else mr. Marchionne. . . Do they right thing for your consumers and recall the vehicles who are as you say lacking "mature" programming. Navigation system not working either. I am seriously considering trading this in for a non Chrysler car.
Driving up steep hill, transmission failed, car went into neutral, flashing red messages on dash, car rolled backwards. Had to put on emergency brake and jump out. Towed to local dealership in berkely, CA. They replaced transmission and updated software as of oct. 1,2015. Car purchased new in Feb. 2015, has 5000 miles. Now car lurches forward, when driving. I feel like I will have an accident. Chrysler customer care doesn't return phone calls. I guess I am lucky I haven't injured myself or anyone else yet!!.
This is an update to a previously made claim (10761069). To summarize, after 4 failed attempts to have my transmission repaired in September, 2015 the transmission completely failed. The transmission was replaced and it is still driving very similar to the old transmission prior to failure. There is a large lag between pressing the gas pedal and acceleration. This is alarming when entering traffic. Also, there are many hard shifts as it moves through the gears. This is a major safety concern for my family and the quality of this vehicle is suspect. I have started the arbitration process and warn other consumers to consider issues prior to purchase.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. While driving various speeds, the transmission failed and re-engaged. The check engine indicator illuminated on the instrument panel and the vehicle lunged forward. The air bag warning indicator illuminated intermittently on the instrument panel. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 16v529000 (power train); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 11,000. The VIN was not available.
