1 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/02/2021

Bought a used 28k mile 2019 Jeep Cherokee fwd on Dec 20th 2020. Took it through a car wash first weekend of January 2021. At end of wash when you are supposed to take it out of nuetral and into drive the transmission would not engage. I could hear it spinning but no action. I was able to coast forward to get out of the way of others leaving the car wash. Thinking it was a fluke I took it back following weekend. Same thing happened. I coasted to a safe place to park. No problems with brakes. Lights had been flashing on shifter panel but had stopped before I read what was said. Took car to dealership. They scoped it and reported no problems. Said it would be necessary to put car in park , turn car off and restart again to reset computer which was confused by wheels turning in nuetral through car wash. Said they hadnt had other such issues. Ive never owned a car with this issue. I'm of sound mind but was very harried at this event knowing other cars were right behind me !! doesn't seem right. Please look into this. I can't have bought the only 2019 Jeep Cherokee fwd vehicle with this issue.

5 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/04/2019

Taking off from stopped position. Transmission will not engage . Engine races so that when transmission does engage the car shoots forward at alarming speed. In traffic cars are blowing at me and im trying to keep from hitting cars in front of me. This does not happen avey time I drive car but is becoming more frequent,so that I am afraid to drive car.

While driving the vehicle on streets and highways, the transmission would disengage from drive, causing the vehicle to stop moving, especially on steep grads.

7 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/19/2019

I have a Jeep Cherokee sport 2015, 14k miles; on 3 different occasions the transmission has disengage while driving on highway losing all acceleration and response. Check engine light on and "service transmission" alert displayed. After turning the car off and restarting, check engine light stayed on but no "service transmission" alert. I was able to drive the car for 10 minutes before the same events happened again. All events occurred while highway driving and after a oil change (second). I had driven (under 40 mph) the car in town for 2 weeks after oil change with no issues. No previous issues before oil change. This is very dangerous issue; many complaints can be found on line of this very issue, suggesting a software or sensor issue. Will someone have to pay the ultimate price with their life before a total recall is issued? complaint filed with washington state ag office and us congressional representatives.

8 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 1995 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/17/2018

I recently purchased a 2015 Jeep Cherokee with only 14,500 miles on it. I noticed that the transmission did not shift properly. The dealer reprogrammed the software that week. A few days after pick up, I noticed the same problem: down shifting, not shifting, transmission reving up and not engaging when the vehicle is in motion.

9 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/25/2018

Three different types of shifter-transmission issues in approximately 6 months of normal in-town and freeway driving. 1. Service shifter warning came on suddenly on a level, dry pavement on cruise control at 70mph on the freeway (17k miles on vehicle) one month, after it happened at 15mph on dry, straight, level pavement in the city and was taken to the dealership and told nothing, was wrong. Turning the vehicle off and on again eliminates notification. The service department at Jeep dealership notified of the 2nd incident which happened today, and I have an appointment next week to have it checked. 2. Shifter popped out of drive suddenly while driving on dry, flat, straight at 35 mph city street (15k on vehicle) into neutral. Had my hands on the wheel and did not bump it. Would not go easily back to park or drive. This happened approximately one month before service shifter incidents. 3. Going through a car wash in neutral at the end when the vehicle had rolled off the conveyor and was stopped I attempted to put it into drive and vehicle revved to a high rpm but did not engage into drive. I had to put into park, shut it off and then turn it back on again to get the vehicle to go into drive. This happened at approximately 5k-10k miles on two separate occasions.

10 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/08/2018

The vehicle was in motion. Just cranked it and pulling out of the parking lot at a target in huntsville alabama. The car shifted hard and I heard a pop. I stopped at the end of the row to pull out. I heard another pop while turning into the bottom parking lot road. I made it to the highway not hearing another pop. I made it to the red light and the car lost power to the transmission. I coasted into a parking lot. The car would not engage in forward or reverse. The car would power up and all other functions worked.

11 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/16/2018

Vehicle read "service transmission" while on interstate going approx. 60mph. Two miles later all power to engine stopped. No problems with power to car, air conditioning, radio, etc. Transmission would not engage consistently, but luckily I made it home. When pressing gas pedal, tachometer would not move and if it did, it would accelerate with what felt like idling power - no ability to truly accelerate.

12 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/01/2018

Vehicle will not fully engage into "drive". Vehicle will jerk and lunge for about 5 seconds before it is fully engaged into "drive". Happens most often on cold start ups after the vehicle has sat for at least 2 hours.

13 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/23/2018

Transmission sticks - after you are stopped and then apply the gas, the transmission does not properly engage and when it does, it then "launches" you. Transmission does not properly downshift - you will remove your foot from the gas to start slowing down and it slows for a brief second and then surges. Repaired with a computer reprogram on 5/1/18 and the problem remains. Jeep is well aware of these transmission issues in these vehicles and refuses to recall or to find a repair to fix the issue. There are literally thousand of owners with the same issue who have made the issue known to Jeep. I'm concerned for my safety when I drive the vehicle. I have owned the vehicle since September 2017 and it only has 4150 miles. I have filed a concern with Jeep corporate and there is nothing that they can do for me.

14 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/17/2018

With or with the "auto-start" feature turned on, when turning from a stop or yield (such as turning across traffic), pressing on the throttle pedal causes a pause like the transmission is not engaging then takes off like you slammed on the gas. This has happened multiple times over the last year or so and taking it in to the service department brings nothing but more frustration. This is done on hot or cold engines, no matter the ambient temperature. Serious safety issue.

15 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/25/2018

Sitting at red light-service transmission light went on asking me to put car in park. . Transmission was not engaged, I would say it was in neutral, I put car in park and back to drive. . Did not engage. . Put back in park and turned car off. . Restarted and put in drive. . Engaged but very loud engagement and shook car, still saying transmission needs service. . Took to dealer and they said it needed refreshed. . Has been to dealer several times for similar issue. . Other times transmission disengaged while on freeway. . Dealer refreshed and working ok at this time.

16 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/16/2017

I came to a complete stop at a red light. The brake and gas pedals were frozen in place and the elictrical equipment on the dash went haywire for a moment. The message center then showed the message "start stop system unavailable/ please return to park, then choose desired gear. " I was able to turn on my flashers, but despite shifting to park and to drive several times the transmission would not engage. The engine did not seem to be running. I had to turn the car off and then on with the key several times before the engine turned over. The same thing happened at the next two stop lights. I drove about three miles past the third stoplight, and the same thing happened but while I was driving in motion on a highway at about 55 mph. There was no shoulder. It was terrifying. I turned on my flashers and came to a full stop coasting with no brakes and no ability to shift gears. I turned the car off and on with the key again and the car seemed "fine. " I used the dash button to turn off the auto-off mechanism and drove the last ten miles home without incident. I'm not sure whether the ess system is related to the malfunction, however the error message and result of turning it off suggests it is. I still have a message that says "service auto on off system. " calling dealership today.

17 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/03/2017

Was driving the car and transmission started to disengage. Rpms were going high but the car was not moving. Later that day, the car lunged and the service transmission light came on the car dashboard. The car would go in reverse but not forward. We turned it off, then back on. Same issue but the car let us drive it home. Had to have the car towed to the dealership. This is a 2014 Jeep Cherokee trailhawk with only 22,000 miles. The transmission has been acting up since the day we purchased it. It's an automatic shift, but it is very rough, the car hestiates when you press on the gas. Not surpised that the transmission has gone out on a 3-year old car with only 22,000 miles - pityful.

18 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/29/2017

There is an intermittent issue with the transmission on this vehicle. At times, when pressing the accelerator from a stop, the engine will rev but the transmission will not engage for a second or so. When it finally does engage, the tires screech and then the car goes. This is very dangerous - especially when making a left turn or other times when pulling out into traffic. . Read more...

19 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/03/2017

4 months following the "flashing" of the computer system after a transmission failure while driving at full speed it has happened again, after never really "feeling" like it was shifting properly. With my 2yr old daughter & wife in the car, while accelerating and turning out into oncoming traffic the transmission suddenly disengaged/slammed, which led to no response, stalling the engine and losing power steering. Lost control of throttle/acceleration. Had to get over immediately to avoid being hit to the side of the road. No warning lights came on like they did the first time, only the battery light likely due to the stall. I put the vehicle in park and turned off the ignition. I then turned it back on to start and it seemed to try to start the vehicle about 5-6 times, and it started. The gears did not seem to be shifting properly, almost stalling again- had to drive it in low 20-30mph to our home. I have it towed to the dealership again, with no update on the status yet. Obviously this is a replace or refund situation- there is no guarantee any "flashing" took care of the issue- this is a mechanical, computer or combination fault. This is our family vehicle- had this happened to them or if traffic had been closer when we turned we would be in the hospital, or worse.

20 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/09/2016

Driving at full speed on the highway the transmission suddenly disengaged, which led to redlining the rpms, because it failed to give me any control of throttle/acceleration. I had to get over and coast to the side of the road. The "service transmission" note came on the screen as well as check engine light. The transmission slammed a few times as if it were unable to find its gear. I have it at a dealership now, apparently being told flashing it may fix the issue. . . However, that doesn't make me feel better with how the vehicle acted or if any damage occurred due to this "computer" issue. This is our family vehicle, so having some major doubts right now.

21 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/06/2016

First occurring in the fall of 2015, the power lift gate failed to latch. It would no longer respond to attempts to open it electronically, and instead remained unlatched. Any pressure placed against the lift gate from the inside raised the lift gate. We had it serviced, the problem seemed to be fixed, but as of 6 August 2016 we are experiencing the same problem again. This problem is unique and unrelated to the recall issued in December of 2015. With three dogs that ride in our vehicle with us, we absolutely cannot drive with a lift gate that doesn't close. Additionally, the engine lags dangerously behind acceleration sometimes, like when driving through an intersection. It will start to accelerate, then the transmission seems to disengage, and the vehicle loses power completely for a few seconds before the powertrain engages again. We've already almost been in two accidents because of this problem.

22 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/05/2016

Tl - the contact owns a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving down a hill with the cruise control activated, the vehicle accelerated and the engine rpms revved. In addition, the transmission down shifted but failed to engage. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician stated that the vehicle was functioning as designed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 3,000.

23 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/27/2016

Last summer, I was in the dealership for the second time regarding what seems to be a transmission problem. The first time was a couple of months prior when the emergency lights came on my dash regarding, engine, transmission, etc¿ after three attempts, of turning off/on my car, I was able to finally put my car into gear and go. I brought the car in and they performed an upgrade to the computer system which seemed to fix the problem. The second time I experienced any issues with my car was last week when I was driving on the highway going about 30 mph when I accelerated to pass another driver and my car just revved¿there was no acceleration when I pressed on the gas. As you could imagine, I was really shocked by this. In addition to these incidents, the car will ¿jump¿ into gear¿. More often when I put my car in reverse. I have had several issues with the transmission on this vehicle. Starting with the lights and alerts coming on. . . While in park, preventing me to start the vehicle, all the way up to driving 70 mph and having the alarms go off regarding check transmission issues and service transmissions. Each time when the car was in motion, I would pull over and the transmission would not engage, eventually, when I would turn off the car and restart it, it would work without a problem. . . . Until the next time. Quite often, I would accelerate only to stand still and hear the engine revving. These recurring transmission issues are making it difficult for me to be a devoted Jeep customer as I no longer feel safe in this vehicle!.

24 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/15/2016

The 9 speed transmission is unreliable and dangerous. The transmission does not engage when starting from a stop. The engine revs and then several seconds later the transmission engages and lurches forward. The delay puts you at risk as you enter traffic. Additionally, the transmission will suddenly shift when you are coasting and accelerate 10-15 miles per hour faster. I have had the car into the dealership 5 times to repair this and nothing changes. Flashing the software does nothing. I have filed a lemon law claim with the state of CA and have an arbitration meeting scheduled in September.

25 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/29/2016

Transmission failed to engage on start up, car limped to dealership, and is awaiting a new transmission. Vehicle has less than 14500 miles.

26 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/04/2016

The rough shifting in low gears is an annoyance the trans disengaging in an accelerated left turn was a near miss crash. It's happened twice now and I've determined the conditions under which it happens. In both cases the conditions have been the same. Conditions: I live in a city with heavy traffic. Travel on a two lane road to my home and it is at a crawling pace. I have to turn left into sub. There is opposing traffic & limited openings to turn. You have to "hit it" to make your left turn between the opposing traffic cars (no stop light). When you hit it, the engine revs in that low gear and you are now into the opposing lane and you have seconds where you seem like you're just floating (no transmission engaged) through that lane. The opposing car is still coming at you. The trans finally jerks and engages and you squeal your tires to quickly get out of the way and not get hit. It's close enough that the opposing car beeps it's horn at you. It's bad, when you don't trust your vehicle (only 1 year old) to another person. I worry for their safety! I'm dissatisfied with the vehicle only because of the transmission. If I had my way, I'd be giving it back to the dealership.

27 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/28/2016

Transmission disengages while driving. Display on dashboard say put car in "p" and restart vehicle. After doing what the display states, it goes into drive forcefully and makes a load bang. The engine light comes on along the traction control light. After letting the vehicle sit over night and doesn't occur again for about another 10-15 k miles later. This issue created an unsafe condition. All the times this occurred I almost was rear ended, couldn't make turn to a safe pull off area and happened on a on-ramp entering a highway.

28 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/11/2016

A couple months after purchasing my car brand new I got a flat tire for no reason. The sensor had to be replaced as well and it took over a week to change my tire. The dealership was awful and the Jeep roadside assurance took 6 hours to get to me for a tow, I complained to no avail. Next my transmission was acting weird. Accelerating and decelerating without me gassing or braking. Took it in and no one took me seriously. December 2015 my cars transmission disengaged on the highway at night. Thankful I could pull over to the side. Got it towed to Jeep they said the transmission module needed to be replaced but there was no real fix because the software to fix it hasn't been created yet. So basically we're going to put a faulty part back in your car and cross our fingers it works. Yesterday 4/11/16 the exact thing happened on the highway but in the mid morning. Again I was able to veer off with no power safely but was in a bad spot on the highway with cars racing past me and not moving over or slowing down. Definitely a stressful experience. Got towed again and the maintenance were so relaxed about it. They didn't care at all even though this was my second problem in less than 6 months. Turns out it was the same problem and they fixed it in one day because they have transmission modules in stock. One can only assume it's because many owners are coming in to get them replaced. I'm am looking into lemon laws and suggest everyone with this problem does the same.

29 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/30/2015

At four different random occasions vehicle will disengage the transmission while in drive and become uncontrollable only thing responsive are the brakes. The power steering will go out as well and the vehicle transmission light and parking light will appear on the gauge display. After pulling over on the highway and letting the vehicle sit off for 5 minutes, I would then restart the vehicle and still get a indicator stating to put the vehicle in park when it is already in park. Afterwards vehicle indicator lights would go away after a few restarts and once put in drive gears would shift roughly. After multiple times of turning the vehicle on and off things will return to normal but as stated before I have no clue what triggers the transmission to disengage. It has happened to me while driving through the city and highway going at different speeds.

30 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/22/2015

We were coming off the highway and the Jeep went over something slick and we had a very slight slide which caused an engine light to stay on and the transmission to freeze up. Engine stayed running but transmission would not engage into drive. After we shut down the engine and waited a minute we decided to restart and we were able to drive but the engine light stayed on. Aaa California gave us a repair shop to go to and they were able to reset the engine light yet they had told us that they have been seeing this occasionally with this transmission. The transmission thinks that all gears are engaged this the explanation that we received. This happen coming off the highway, what if we were in the snow or highway? we are very concerned.

31 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/01/2015

Transmission lunges, clunks and jerks. Horrible 2 updates and 2 relearns at one year old already. The 1st gear does not seem to engage all the time right away. The 5th gear clunks , lunges or slips.

32 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/18/2015

The vehicle randomly does not respond to the accelerator. This is not a regular occurance, maybe once or twice a month. We have had several occasions when we have been making turns with plenty of room but the vehicle does not engage. The same issue has happened when trying to accelerate on the freeway and the vehicle does not 'listen' to a pushed gas pedal. We have had it to the dealership 5 times and they say they 'cannot reproduce the issue' and have offered now help. We find a large number of the same complains online about the Cherokee's transmission. My wife was almost hit while making a turn the other day and we are going now to trade in the vehicle.

33 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/09/2015

When attempting to accelerate from a stop position the vehicle's rpms will go up, however the vehicle will not move, and then will suddenly lunge forward. It also will shift very hard from gear to gear, and if stopped on a hill, and attempt to move from starting position, transmission does not engage right away, even though vehicle is in drive. It started doing this about two months after I bought the vehicle at which time it had approx. 2000 miles on it, and has continued.

34 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/07/2015

6 times since purchasing the vehicle on Jan 30,2015 the car's transmission fails to engage after coming to a stop. Upon acceleration after a stop, the engine revs as if its in neutral when the gear shift is in drive often rendering the vehicle inoperable in the middle of an intersection. Several warning lights and messages flash including the disabling of the abs system, emergency brake system, and shift vehicle into desired gear while still in drive. On 11/7/15 the lights began flashing while driving and the transmission failed to engage when the car came to a stop. Usually turning the car off and restarting will allow the vehicle to become operational again (with a check engine light illuminated) however, this time the vehicle would not even start and the transmission could not be shifted out of park in order to push it out of the middle of the street. This began the day after I purchased it with 80 miles on it and has continued to happen even after dealer "remedies" of resetting the transmission module, updating the transmission module and replacing the transmission module. This issue continues to worsen and is becoming increasingly hazardous. I do have videos of how the vehicle acts during these episodes and the dangerous position it has left me and my young daughters in when it occurs.

35 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/30/2015

Driving 65 mph on highway dashboard warning lights started flashing service transmission immediately. Transmission disengaged car would not respond when gas pedal was pushed. Message to shift car in park appeared. Had to coast in morning rush hour traffic to the shoulder. Could have been a very dangerous situation. On shoulder put it into park and if it was put into drive it would jolt severely and would not move more than a few inches with accelerator pressed. Had the car towed to the dealer on a flatbed. Was informed that a new transmission is needed. The Jeep Cherokee has 31000 miles.
