Jeep Cherokee owners have reported 52 problems related to transmission not engage (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Jeep Cherokee based on all problems reported for the Cherokee.
Took car in for recent update to transmission software. Car was ok for a little while then went right back to the problems. Car shifts into wrong gear when climbing a hill and downshifts to to low of a gear causing the engine in to high rpm. Sometimes the transmission does not engage when depressing the accelerator. Have to release accelerator then transmission will engage. Car has a hard shift point from 2nd to 3rd gear. This has caused me to be more cautious while driving and making sure I have enough time to pull out into traffic incase the transmission doesnt engage.

When I was looking at vehicles, the primary items I wanted in the new vehicle was a six cylinder engine so that we would have the pick-up needed for extensive highway driving. The issues existed since it was new but I have actually become concerned for my safety in this vehicle; we only drive it when we absolutely have to (ie. Both of us in the household have to go to work). The engine is the 6 cylinder with the 9 speed transmission. This engine has intermittent issues where the vehicle hesitates, lurches, and jumps. Sometimes when accelerating from a full stop, it hesitates several seconds, and then when it does respond the tires squeal and the vehicle lurches forward from the transmission not engaging as it should. Sometimes it is a milder response where it is just a hesitation due to delayed shifting. More recently, now the engine is not downshifting and the engine revs and doesn't want to downshift. I no longer feel safe driving this because it is so erratic and I constantly wonder what it is going to do next. Every time we take it to the Jeep dealer, they update the computer and send us on our way. The software updates do not help. We have asked them to drive it and they have told me they don't experience anything wrong. It wasn't until we went to write this letter that we realized that the service orders don't record the fact that we have asked the Jeep dealer to look at this issue every time it has been in the shop with them. Which indicates to us that Jeep is trying to hide from this issue. The amazing thing is that if you go online and start researching issues with the Jeep engine that has the 9 speed transmission, thousands of people are having the same problems as we are having. The sad thing is Jeep continues to make the engine with the 9 speed transmission and the issues don't seem to be fixed. To me that is blatant disregard for the consumer.

With our 2014 Jeep Cherokee 4cyl. We were close to a horrible collision. We were merging onto a major highway when the SUV lost power when accelerating and the transmission disengaged. We were nearly sideswiped by a semi!!!!! when giving the SUV gas, it downshifted to accelerate and then all of a sudden disengaged and the SUV felt like it halted forward slowing down to 15mph. It seemed as if the engine and transmission were not communicating correctly. If the gas pedal was softly pressed the SUV would accelerate, however, if the gas pedal was pressed down further, the transmission was just gone! this continued to happen until the car was power cycled off. This is a major safety concern. Brought it to the dealership and they couldn't find anything wrong. I am so scared to drive this SUV now. Please investigate and have a safety update soon!!!!.
Transmission shifts hard from 4th gear to 5th gear. 1st gear does not engage immediately when heavy acceleration is required. Occurs when the vehicle is in motion on all roads. ) shifts hard from drive to reverse. Occurs when stopped from drive to reverse. I have taken it to moss bros. Dearlship in riverside over 10 times for these issues. The latest time was November 2017. They tell me they cannot replicate the problem and therefore there is nothing to fix. I believe they are lying and the safety of all who ride in my car are at risk. This was first reported to moss bros. On August 5, 2015. The car had 23,907 miles.
While driving on the freeway the vehicle disengaged the transmission leaving the car to coast with no power. Engine still ran but when you tried to hit the gas the vehicle just coasted endangering the occupants. This is the 3rd time this has happened. The first two times my teenage son was driving on a narrow winding road. We have brought the vehicle into Jeep and each time they say it is a software issue and they updated the software and said everything is fine. The third time happened while I was driving down the freeway disabling the vehicle. When you turn the vehicle off and then on again the transmission begins to work but gives you a service transmission error.
Transmission disengaged intermittently as vehicle coasted along freeway. Pulled over and turned off/restarted vehicle. Transmission then engaged. Took in for software upgrade. No more high speed issues but now vehicle will rev from stop condition before transmission engages. This is a 9-speed transmission in the new 2015 Jeep Cherokee trailhawk.
Transmission failed to engage, car would not accelerate, narrowly avoided accident.
Started backing out of parking space; stopped for vehicle passing behind; started to resume backing; numerous warning lights and tones started; such as a message to get service; transmission would not engage and move vehicle; coasted to another parking space; vehicle engine would rev when gas pedal pressed but transmission still would not engage; clunks were heard as shifter was moved to neutral, park, drive and reverse; turned off engine and waited; several minutes later everything was normal when engine was started. Had vehicle serviced at Jeep dealer. Vehicle was reprogrammed by a fca technician on 03/11/15. On 3/24/15, mileage: 13,749 the same vehicle performed similar to first event as stated in the above description. This event occurred as vehicle approached a traffic signal; moving around 20 mph. Transmission would not engage. Coasted to a safe area. Turned off switch to engine; waited, then restarted; system reset. All appeared to be normal except park sense system is inoperable; on/off switch for park sense will not resolve inoperable status. Headed to dealer again tomorrow for service. This is a serious safety issue.
Car began to loose power and started bucking was traveling at 70 mph. . . Then it started thrashing numerous codes and all the lights on the dash started flashing this was followed by a big downshift and then a bang total loss of power on a major freeway. When the car came to a stop it would not disengage from drive then after turning the car off I was able to put it in park. After restarting it all the strong message lights were on as well as different computer messages like check brake, check engine. If you put it in gear it would make a big cluck but no power would only idle. When driving at highway speed the at car looses power and starts to buck and downshift to a lower gear then transmission disengages. Engine stay running but there is no power and nothing happens when you depress gas pedal. This is very dangerous as it happens consistently. Also the transmission many time keeps randomly switching between gears. Dealer again says its a software issue in the transmission. Software recodes have not fixed the problem.
While driving down the interstate at 70 mph the electronic transmission disengaged and the vehicle started decelerating to a stop. . Luckily the traffic was light and and I was able to pull off to the shoulder before coming to a stop. The vehicle did not roll , it started slowing as if braking. , I was lucky to not be rear ended, there was no for warning and probably no brake lights. I feel the vehicle is unsafe to drive and want to know why it just shut down at 70 miles per hour, it may have resulted in a serious accident if the traffic haden't been so light. Articals on the internet indicate the launch of the vehicle was delayed by transmission faults. I believe it was put into production faulty. Please investigate.

Transmission shifts erratically. When stopping and starting at a stop sign, transmission may not engage, then engages with a hard bang into gear. Other times when slowing down and then trying to accelerate, transmission may not engage quickly enough. Transmission is dangerous as one does not know if the transmission will engage when needed, especially when needed to get out of the way of other vehicles. Car has been into Jeep dealership 4 times, opened a case with Jeep, told this is normal operation for the transmission. The transmission is getting worse and dangerous as you do not know how it will react.
The vehicle almost from the time of purchase exhibited transmission problems, when merging into traffic the car would lag and not engage. This was something that occurred at what appeared random times. It would jerk to the point that I thought I was rear ended. This persisted and I have taken the vehicle to two different dealerships and worked with three case managers at Jeep customer care and the issue was never resolved. This week the transmission completely went out. The car has not been safe for sometime due to situational circumstances. I have had nothing but trouble from the vehicle since purchase (new) and had had to take the vehicle in for repairs multiple times with no resolution made.
Tl - the contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds attempting to accelerate, the gears failed to engage causing the vehicle to lunge forward. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician stated that the vehicle was working up to specifications. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and sent out an engineer to inspect the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 300. Pm.
Driving along at 30 when first the engine light came on, then immediately after the display said transmission and the display was lighting up with all sorts of symbols. The transmission completely disengaged and the car coasted to a stop. It would not move. Fortunately when I felt it losing power I was able to make a quick turn into a store parking lot. Had that happened on the highway I could have been killed because the car just totally lost all motion as I was driving. I turned it completely off for a few minutes and it started but with the engine light showing. I called the dealership kelly Jeep Chrysler in lynnfield and told the service department what happened. I drove straight there. . . Furious. The service guy took down the information I relayed about the incident. I told him I had read recently that their 9 speed transmission had known issues and he said he didn't know anything about that. I told him not to even tell me I am the first to report this problem and he said "maybe not in the whole country but I don't think we've had this problem here" and I told him not to speak down to me because it has been written about already as a known issue. He already had the courtesy car waiting for me and he immediately walked me out the door to the car. I was there less than 5 minutes. I know he did not want me speaking to anybody in the service waiting room as I could see people sitting there waiting for their own repairs. This is an issue that will end up killing somebody.
On April 1, 2015 while accelerating from a complete stop to merging into on coming traffic the transmission disengaged and the car lost all power. Warning came on the dash telling me " transmission needs service. No power. Pull over to side of road. Put car in park and shut off engine. " this happened again on July 17, 2015 while my wife was making a left hand turn from a complete stop. The transmission disengaged again and she lost all power. She was nearly rear ended by a semi truck who was behind her but made the left hand turn without slowing down. She had our 2 grand daughters in the back set and was scared and afraid for their safety. This 2014 Jeep Cherokee model has had continued issues with the 9 speed transmission and all Jeep does is issue software upgrades to try to eliminate the shifting and poor acceleration problems this transmission continues to have. With the transmission disengaging at lower speeds someone is going to get killed if not seriously hurt. The NHTSA needs to issue a recall to Jeep before someone is killed by this faulty transmission that was brought to market before long term test could be conducted on it to make sure it functions properly and safely.
Vehicle will disengage from the park position into the reverse position.
