Transmission jumped into reverse and dragged owner ten feet, resulting in hitting a stack of hardwood lumber.
This Jeep has had problems since I first bought it. I questioned the dealer about these problems as they arose. I was made to feel that "all these things" are perfectly natural. This Jeep cannot even back up my driveway without squealing, tires and smoking the tires, no matter how slowly I try to go up it. I do not feel safe in this vehicle and would like Jeep Chrysler to take this vehicle back. I cannot put into 2000 characters all the problems I have had with this vehicle. I have an 11 year old child and thought I was buying reliable transportation. I am very disappointed in the reliablility and the handling of this vehicle. I am afraid to take it on a trip for fear it will quit on me again and strand me in an unsafe place. I have never owned a new vehicle like this before that put the fear of the devil in me like this Jeep does. We live in the northeast and should never have to be stranded or put on hold with Chrysler emergency roadside assistance for 29 minutes. It took me 3 1/2 hours to warm up. I had severe frostbite due to the mechanical failure I had to endure.

While vehicle was parked, with the engine running, gear in park, it went from park to reverse and crashed into a Ford f150 pickup.

03/27/00 transmission not shifting, skipping gears and whining.
I think that the overall service of the Jeep dealer really stinks. No safety defect listed within summary.
When consumer will turn vehicle on there was hesitation. Also, vehicle was hard to put in gear. She contacted Jeep, and vehicle needed transmission. Dealership will replaced transmission on the warranty.
Thumping heard on acceleration or on bumpy road.
When car is in drive and coming to a stop consumer hears a rattle. When in park, can't hear anything. The noise was coming from muffler area and the dealer changed the muffler as a possible cause, but the problem still not solved. * yh.
When shifting forward one position to overdrive without thumb button pressed, shift lever went forward to reverse, causing vehicle to lose control at high speed which resulted in a crash with injuries sustained. This is the second time this happened to the driver. The first incident was aprx 2 months prior and was not reported because driver thought she may have had thumb button pressed in. She changed the way she was shifting to overdrive so that thumb was not resting on button and thought that would solve the problem. Apparently it did not. Vehicle rolled twice as a result of crash. May also be related to intermittent problem of key being stuck in ignition. Solution was to repeatedly press thumb button on shift lever until key would finally release. Please advise owner of any findings.
Jeep lemon!!! terrible vehicle, terrible company!! this vehicle should be recalled immediately for these two issues, among others! I have almost rearended someone, by lookingback to see if I was rear ended due to the hard shift. The brakes shake so much under braking that I did rear end someone, however there was no noticable damage to either vehicle.

When starting the Jeep this morning, vehicle was in first gear and emergency brake fully engaged, and clutch was not employed. The car started and went in reverse and down the yard, dragging the driver caught in the door. The vehicle hit the house and broke the back wall of porch and crushed drivers side door. Has there been any other reports of this happening. It is totally unexplainable. Thank you.

When in park gear with engine running, car will roll backwards.
The description of the problem as per the news on 07/04/2001 fits the incident. At the time of the incident, a teenage friend was driving alone. He backed out of the driveway and noticed the dog was out of the yard. He said he put it in park and got out to get the dog. The Jeep inadvertently rolled in reverse into a neighbors fence causing minor damage to the rear bumper and exhaust system. I had to pay the neighbor for the damage to his fence. Incident was not reported as I deemed it his error and damage was minimal.
Consumer stopped vehicle and put transmission pawl in park, then she got out of vehicle to close the gas tank door and started rolling on a level surface, and ran over her foot. Also vehicle crashed into another vehicle on the second time that pawl jumped out of park. Dealer was contacted.
Vechile was running in park position, approximately 1 minute after , vehicle was in reverse, moving every quickly. Consumer ran after vehicle, tried to jump into vehicle, fell down, hit head, could not stop, ended up hitting another vehicle.
When accelerating from a stop, my Jeep will not go, it hesitates badly, seems to have no power. It does this daily. Not every time from a stop but quite often. I have taken this to a dealer in germany while stationed there and they could find nothing wrong with it or have any explaination on what is causing this problem. My Jeep has less than 42,000 miles on it now and was under warranty when it first started doing this, it has been doing this for years. It is scary to pull out into traffic and have the car go no where, it is not stalling, it seems to loose go-power, maybe not enough fuel. I have am the primary driver of this vehicle and have to deal with this very often. Is anyone else having this problem? please help.
Transmission jumped out of park into reverse, running over driver and ragging him for about 50 ft.
Transmission problems on several occasions, unable to rectify.
Shifted from drive to park, left engine running, got out of vehicle, gear shifted itself into reverse, such force, vehicle lurched backward, then forward. Vehicle travelled backwards, hitting a tree and consumer jumped in and knocked it back into park.
Automatic transmission popped out of park position, resulting in a roll away.
I was told by a machanic that the 5 speed manual transmission is known for this problem. In 1996 Jeep started using a Toyota transmission and that shifting 1st and 2nd gear is a problem. I have noted this problem after about 30000 miles or so and I was told by the Jeep dealership that nothing was wrong with the transmission or clutch.
The vehicle jumped out of park and into reverse. Cause was unknown.
Transmission cluncks severely while shifting gear. Yh.
While driving and coming to a stop transmission will not shift down to low gear, and at times will completely shut down, cause unknown. Dealer can not identify the cause of the problem. Please give any further details.
