I purchased my 2015 kia Soul used in June 2017. While driving straight in low traffic to work on a freeway in may 2020, I felt my kia Soul begin to bog down, then the engine light came on. Next, I heard a knocking sound. I stopped and checked the oil and saw it was low, despite a full oil change in March 2020. I filled it with oil and I was able to get it to my mechanic the next day. At the mechanics, I was told he was only able to find less than 1 quart of oil despite me adding 3 quarts. He said the engine was damaged and would need to be fully replaced.

As we excited the freeway, the car started running rough at the stop light. As I pulled into the gas station the engine stopped running on its own and I heard a loud "ping". After numerous attempts to re-start the car, we had to leave it at the gas station over night. When I was trying to re-start the car I noticed the engine wasn't cranking at all, almost like it was a dead battery. In the morning the car started right up but with a horrible loud knocking sound coming from the engine. I had to drive it home which is about 3miles, I had no other options. It was explained to me it was a rod knocking. I still owe $8,247. 89 and to fix it is going to be well over $5,000. The car has 109,776 miles, my husband maintained it religiously, and to have this happen so close into paying it off is devastating as this was our only car. There was no warning, no check engine light, no low oil light, no rough idling or out of place sounds.

While driving our 2014 kia Soul base 2. 0l on the highway at approximately 60mph, the engine suddenly started making a very loud knocking noise. The driver was able to pull off at the next ramp to check the oil. There was no oil on the stick and it had a burnt smell. There oil had been changed by the dealership about 6 weeks prior, and we had no indication that the oil was low, the engine hasn't been smoking, and there was no oil on the ground. The shop has never mentioned our oil being low when we came in for a change. We had the vehicle towed to the dealership. They have since told us the engine needs to be completely replaced. Of course we are just past the warranty with about 109,000 miles on it.
Knocking sound coming from engine while vehicle stationary. Diagnosis points to damaged piston rod. Oil level checked found low despite appropriate levels when checked 1500 miles prior. Possible cause due to overheating emissions similar if not directly related to that of recall #sc176.

The contact owns a 2014 kia Soul. The contact stated that the vehicle would stall at various speeds. The contact stated she had to wait approximately a minute before regaining normal functionality. The instrument panel would display d for drive for a moment however, the drive indicator would suddenly disappear as the vehicle stalled. The drive display would return once the vehicle regained function. The contact stated the vehicle made an excessive rattling or banging sound when starting the vehicle. The contact stated that oil had to be added to the vehicle approximately every two weeks. The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who repaired the catalytic converter twice. The mechanic stated that the pressure from one of the cylinders within the vehicle was causing oil to leak internally. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
Loud clanging / knocking sound from the engine. Subsequently the car stopped running- unable to start. Before the car stopped running, I was able to pull off of freeway.
Vehicle was driven for aprox. 45 min at freeway speeds of 70 mph upon exiting the free way the vehicle stalled. There was no accident and I was able to coast the vehicle to a parking lot, at that time the 2012 kia Soul would not start. A few hours later I was able to start the vehicle, there was a very bad banging sound from the engine, I was able to drive it a short distance to the auto parts store to test the check engine light. There was a code for p0420 "catalyst system efficiency below threshold". I was told not to drive the vehicle any further. I had the vehicle towed to a kia service (where it currently is). They are claiming that it does not fall within the recall for NHTSA campaign number: 19v120000 - kia recall # sc176 this recall seems to be the same issue.

While driving the engine made a knocking sound and then seized. Towed to the shop. Mechanic reported catastrophic engine failure.
105800 miles on the engine. Serviced regularly. Driving on an interstate at speeds around 60 mph. Heard a loud knocking sound happened. Ended up throwing a piston through the oil pan at speeds. No accident.
I was driving to work and my check engine light came on. I figured I would take it to my mechanic the next day since I did not see, hear, or smell anything at that time. Within 10 minutes, a knocking noise started under my hood. I immediately headed towards my mechanic's shop - I made it 8 miles, with the knocking becoming more frequent, until it stopped and my engine died. I was in the right lane of the highway at approximately 50 mph. I was able to coast from the closest exit ramp into a gas station parking lot. I had my vehicle towed the rest of the way to my mechanic, who diagnosed a spun or thrown rod bearing. He identified one hole in the bottom of the engine - the ejected part had pierced the engine block and my oil pan. I called kia consumer affairs, who advised this sounded like an issue I should take it to a dealership to have evaluated for replacement/repair by kia. As far as I know, there has been no recall, but kia seems to already be aware of this problem in Souls and has not issued a recall. The representative on the phone at kia consumer affairs said I "may not have even received the letter yet". My vehicle was not included in the previous recall but appears to have suffered the expected issue. The recall should be expanded. I took my vehicle to my local dealership, who coordinated with their district manager and kia has agreed to repair my engine. I am concerned that they will only repair the damage but not address the actual issue. The dealership also identified a second hole that had been made in my engine block by debris when my engine broke down.
Vehicle engine started to knock at cruising speed, 70 mph and 2400 rpm. 235 mile trip the engine had at multiple times began to rev up to 3500 rpms at cruising speed with no indications as to why. Within 5 miles of rapid knocking noise, engine cuts off and oil pressure light comes on. Complete loss power at driving speed and loss of oil pressure. Oil system maintained in accordance with recommendation in manual. Oil system not low on oil. Complete bearing failure. Full synthetic oils used. Multiple complaints to dealer about engine shaking, sounding like helicopter, complaints about the cruise control high racing engine to make slight inclines to at least 6500 rpms. Dealers only treatment was fuel injector cleaner.
Engine- 2017 kia Soul 2. 0 l 4-cyl. Mileage at the time of purchase 42,788. Mileage at failure was 89,144. Usage predominately hwy miles. At the time of failure, we owned the vehicle 19 months. Regular oil changes with castrol gtx and edge 100% synthetic 5w20 oil. February 02, 2020 my wife started the day driving away from home. The outside temperature in the 60's and sunny. Drove 4. 5 miles traveling 45mph on a straight level city roadway in heavy traffic. She could have been rear-ended or when turning off the roadway with loss of power t-boned trying to exit the roadway in an emergency. There is no breakdown lane or enough ground on the side of the roadway to pull off. All of a sudden, for no reason, the engine lost power and made a knocking sound. She checked the instrument panel, no warning lights. Temperature gauge read normal. Within seconds, she pulled into a parking lot and turned off the motor. No visible signs of any damage on the exterior of the motor or underneath the vehicle. We are the second owner of this vehicle. Manufactures initial transferable warranty expired. We towed the vehicle to our regular ase certified mechanic. They determined the issue to be a rod knock. Further diagnosis determined from a compression test the #2 cylinder is at 80#'s compression the other three at 150#s. I have read your report regarding the ongoing investigation into kia's motor failures. I believe this motor should be included in the investigation although both VIN searches turned up no recall on my vehicle. We are currently trying to get the local dealer to work on the vehicle and they want to charge a minimum fee of 1500-1600 to tear the motor down and complete an investigation into why the motor failed. We have an aftermarket warranty program and they are trying to find a way not to pay for any claim on this issue. Our dilemma is ongoing at the time of this complaint.

Vehicle was purchased brand new in July of 2015 and had approximately 124,000 miles. All regular maintenance including oil changes were done at kia service centers , next service wasn't due for another 2,000-3,000 miles. Engine began making loud ticking and knocking noises on 25 Jan 2020 and started having trouble accelerating and reaching higher rpms. I left it parked over the weekend until I could get it looked at by my local kia dealer. When I started it 2 days later for the appointment the oil light instantly came on and the engine noise was much worse. Checked the oil reservoir and the dipstick was completely dry. There were no visible oil leaks or any indication that it was burning through oil. Vehicle was towed to my local kia service center and after inspection determined the engine needed replacing due to damaged cylinders and presence of metal shavings and debris. The dealership said replacement engine is covered under their 20 year/200,000 mile powertrain warranty. No current eta on the repairs and I'm currently without a vehicle until the work on the engine is completed.
My car while driving on 65 hospital curve - louisville ky- dangerous spot- the car slowed right down and a loud knocking noise came from under the hood - engine - I was forced to pull off next exit and park. I had changed my oil 5-6 weeks prior. I contacted kia customer service they said there was nothing they could do. After leaving a bad review - they offered to diagnose it - but wouldn't pay for it to be fixed - it only has just over 80k on it and I have only driven 27 k in 2-3 yrs.
I heard a knocking noise in my engine (66k). I had just changed the oil 4 months ago and was due for an oil change so calmly I went to check my engine and I was met with an unwelcome surprise, my engine was abnormally low on oil. I never had any inclination oil was leaving as I had no trace of leaks and my oil light never came on initially I thought maybe I could just put some more oil and take it to get the oil changed and the issue would be over. I was told by firestone, I should take to the dealer to get checked since it might still be under warranty. I did drive the car home and then to the dealer because I now had fresh oil and should be able to have the issue remedied. It took the dealer over a week to hear back from the tech line, with me calling constantly to get an update. Only to be told there is nothing covered because I have fresh oil in my engine. It would cost me $5,600 to replace the engine. I was left with no recourse, since I cannot trade, but to have the engine replaced at my own expense. I started to do research and learned the class action lawsuit for the gdi motors failing due to faulty rods. I discovered, my rods were shot and eventually as I was driving to the mechanic to have the new engine installed, something seemed to have shot through my oil pan causing a hole in oil and total engine failure, on the highway. At this point, I had to call a tow truck and endured safety hazards on the highway. I initially saw no point in having towed to the shop for almost 30 miles because that was the best deal, I could find to install the engine I bought. I also found out I had to have my clutch replaced. This whole scenario caused me a great deal of stress, worry, and financial trouble. I ended up paying close to $2,800 to have a used gdi engine installed.
85k miles 2016 kia Soul. Turning from a stop into slow oncoming side street traffic, loss of acceleration power. Rpms to 4, slight rev, but no power. Could not go over 20 or so mph. Slight low rattle when pulled over (within 2 blocks of issue). Oil light flicker. Ran fixd diagnostic. Nothing. Drive slowly 4 or so more miles to destination. Oil light flickered upon arrival. Ran diagnostic again after parking. Camshaft position timing sensor pulls up. Checked oil. Low. Filled oil. Next morning drive 1 more mile to aaa approved shop. They do not mention camshaft sensor. They say oil pressure low even with oil, engine about to seize up. Knocking sound loud after their assessment and however long they drove it. I looked online and saw several mentions of kia Souls with less mileage and same problem - loss power. Engine quitting. No check engine light ever came on. Oil light only flickered when parking, and car was topped with oil within 4 or so miles of this. No oil leaks evident. Car was up to date on maintenance and oil changes at recommended schedule.
The car was being driven on a city street. The car began to make knocking noise coming from the engine. As I accelerated, the knocking noise would increase. The noise would continue even if the car was doing a turn. Also being stationary, the vehicle would be with that knocking noise.
The contact owns a 2014 kia Soul. While driving 50 mph on the freeway. The engine made a weird knocking noise and the vehicle slowed down. The contact smelled a burning odor, pulled off the highway, and had the vehicle towed to sunset kia (3401 auburn way n, auburn, wa 98002, (855) 474-9626). The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign number: 19v120000 (engine and engine cooling). The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and stated that the cause was not directly related to the recall because their scanner was not reading the catalytic converter code being damaged. Because of this, the dealer refused to repair the vehicle per the recall. The manufacturer provided a case number, but stated that the final decision would have to be made by the district parts manager. The failure mileage was 87,500.
Bought a 2012 kia Soul from graham's dealership in ontario, ohio in 2016, I started getting a knocking sound from my motor about 7 months ago and took it in to be looked at for a recalland said there was no issues and gave me a tire rotation and oil change which had nothing to do with what I asked. The systems continued to get worse as I was buying four quarts a week for a 1. 7 liter engine so I got it in and all of a sudden the motor was bad enough for them to believe considering it is absolutely horrible sounding so graham's calls kia and they say they'd replace it with a new motor (this was said on 12/11/20). Brian at graham's auto mall said he would call in the morning with the date for it to be replaced. I get the call the next day and they said that the manufacture was not going to do the recall even tho I was told it was going to be done and than changed the next day. Brian said they're was basically nothing to be done which I believe is a complete lie. I've been a loyal customer paying over 16,000$ through three years just for them to not take the recall and replace my motor. I am very upset over this and would love to have something done about it.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Soul. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the check engine light had illuminated and the speed of the vehicle had suddenly reduced. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer trophy kia of carson located at 22020 recreation rd, carson, CA 90745, who reset the engine software but the failure continued to occur. The engine later experienced a loud knocking noise and excessive oil consumption. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 19v120000 (engine and engine cooling). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 125,000.
I began hearing a loud knocking sound while I was driving. I stopped at a pep boys and the tech told me I should be fine to get home. After some time on the road my engine light began to flash and the oil light was on as well. I was able to get the car off the nearest exit and into a park and ride parking lot. The car at this point was smoking. I began to gather my things then I saw flames appear under the hood. That's when I exited the vehicle. The car was engulfed in flames within five minutes. I lost 2 ipads and my iphone. But we made it out safely! a good samaritan followed us off the highway. He has dash cam of my car that shows a spark go off underneath the car while we were still on the road.
The contact owns a 2016 kia Soul. While driving 60 mph, the contact heard an abnormal knocking noise without warning. The vehicle lost power and the contact managed to veer to the shoulder of the road where smoke was noticed coming from the hood. There were no flames; however, the fire department was contacted anyway. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who informed the contact to take the vehicle to university kia of durham (5105 durham-chapel hill blvd, durham, nc 27707, (919) 572-1700). The dealer diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 19v120000 (engine, engine and engine cooling). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.
I bought a used car a month ago. The car is the 2012 kia Soul. Personally, I love this car. The design is pretty and I like it so much. But there is a problem with the engine. The car's engine is a 1. 6 gdi engine. This is a car made in a korean factory. It ran 119,800 miles. Engine knocking noise is very serious. The knocking sound was very loud. I changed the engine oil about 50 days ago. And I ran about 1,000 miles. I checked the amount of engine oil today. Engine oil has been reduced by about 1 liter. I was surprised. If I hadn't checked, there would have been a big problem with the vehicle. I saw a lot of news about the engine of this car in korea. Already, the ministry of land, infrastructure and transport of the korean government has done a lot of research and testing on the engine of the car. They found that engine oil decreased a lot, and Kia Motors acknowledged this. I'm afraid the car will suddenly stop on the street due to engine failure. I want my family to be safe. I contacted american Kia Motors. They only say that my vehicle is out of warranty. If so, should I just continue to ride this car at risk? and I live in hawaii. By the way, the kia customer service center tells me to go to another island, honolulu, for inspection of the vehicle. In order to do that, I have to ship this car and I have to take a plane. But what if the vehicle takes several days to inspect? I think kia should respond wisely and quickly.
Car is going through all of its oil. Goes through approximately 1qt every 1,500 miles. When I first came across this problem the car was making a loud knocking sound, took it to the dealer and there was approx 1 quart of oil in the car. I only drove about 3,000 miles since the last full synthetic oil change. The dealership is telling me this isn't excessive and it is completely normal. I can only drive 1,500 miles until the oil is no longer showing on the dip stick. Currently still working with the dealership to prove there is a problem with these engines. I got a oil change approx 250 miles ago and have to drive 1,000 total and they will examine the car again.
As I was driving down the highway, "55 mph" speed limit was 60 mph my acceleration went out on my car and I couldn't go any faster then 20/25mph. My car started to sound like a weed eater and I never got a single light for something being wrong. As I pulled over to the side of the road my cars engine started to make a knocking sound. I had it towed to a shop close to were I live and they told me that the engine had pieces of metal flakes in it and that it was locked. They also said that it was 3. 5 quarts low of oil but I just had the oil change and had about 3,500 miles left before I needed my next oil change. I'm writing on here because I called kia and they told me that my 2. 0 engine didn't have a recall on it, but as I research I continue to find many people who have a 2. 0 engine having the same issue of the recall on the 1. 6 engines.
Tl-the contact owns a 2016 kia Soul. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, a knocking sound startedemerging from the engine compartment and l the vehicle ost power. The vehicle was driven to the dealer gerald kia naperville, 1661 aurora Ave, napervillew, 60540, they determined that the catalytic converter had failed and needed replacement. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 95,000. Bp.
Was driving car has been running fine, all servicing was done to it at the kia dealership in murphy nc, has only 70,000 miles on it, has 1. 6 liter engine, it just lost all power loud banging noise like a blown road or piston, also no oil.
I just purchased a 2014 kia Soul exclaim and it is in perfect condition until I started hearing knocking noise coming out of the engine. I pulled on the side of the road and called towing company to get it towed to closet kia dealership, I was told it wasn't under a recall and that the other kia Soul(base) is the one under the recall. Which I have to pay around 10k to get it fixed! with a new engine. Car is well taken care of and that issue just came out from nowhere. I strongly believe that NHTSA recall campaign number 19v120000(engine) catalytic converter temperature should be applied to the 2014 kia Soul plus.
Tl-the contact owns a 2015 kia Soul. The contact received NHTSA campaign number: 19v120000 (engine, engine and engine cooling) the vehicle was serviced in September of 2019 at fuccillo kia of cape coral (404 ne pine island rd, cape coral, FL 33909). The contact stated that in October of 2019, while driving at 40 mph a knocking noise was heard with the indicator lamp illuminating. The vehicle was taken to the back to the dealer where it was diagnosed with metal particles in the oil compartment. The engine needs to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic whom confirmed the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 85,000. Aa.
Car was in motion making a knocking sound. Car felt like it was going to stall so I pulled over to the shoulder. Car stalled when I stopped. I tried to start the engine again but all of the warning lights came on and nothing happened. I noticed light gray smoke coming from under the hood. I was going to pop the hood to check if the car was overheating and smoke became thicker and black so me and my kids exited the car and went a safe distance from the car and I called 911.
While driving our 2014 kia Soul plus on a highway the car started making a loud tapping/knocking sound. Within a half mile the sound became much louder and worse. No warning lights came on. We pulled off an exit. We checked the oil. Nothing registered on dipstick. We put 2 quarts in and it registered. When oil cap was removed it was steaming/smoking and there was burnt oil on cap. After restarting the engine and idling for a few minutes the check engine light finally came on. It was now after 9:00pm so nothing was open. We had to spend the night as we were stranded out of state. The next morning we got the car to the nearest kia dealership. We were told the engine was blown and we'd need a new engine. It was no longer under warranty. The car was only 5 years old and had 68288 miles on it. We had no good choice but to purchase a new car and trade the blown engine as we were stranded out of state. (we were quoted around $6,000+ and a couple weeks for a new engine. ) the engine oil had been checked and topped off before leaving on this trip. We put approximately 1,000 miles on the car on this trip. I have receipts. Our cars 2. 0 engine was not part of the recent recall. However that is exactly what happened to our car and should be recalled. We were very frightened and extremely fortunate we were able to pull off the highway safely and there was no engine fire.
Tl-the contact called on behalf his daughter who owns a 2015 kia Soul. The contact stated that while driving at 70 mph, there was an abnormal knocking sound coming from the front of the vehicle. The contact stated that there was also smoke coming from under the hood of the vehicle. The vehicle was safely guided off of the roadway and inspected. The contact noticed a several oil leak underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the fractured connecting rod punctured the engine block which caused the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. A local dealer was not contacted or notified of the failure. An attempt was made to contact the manufacturer but was unsuccessful. The approximate failure mileage was 140000. Ah.
Stopped to get food and oil light began flickering when we were parked, we checked the oil and it had plenty. Driving to the highway the oil light didn't flicker. Got onto highway and we were going about 65 mph the engine suddenly started making a loud banging noise. A few minutes after the check engine light and the oil light came on. I slowed down to pull off the freeway to figure out what was happening. My husband asked me what the car was doing, and I told him I don't know. He told me to go to the next exit to get to a safer area. I was really scared, panicked and shaking because I didn't know what was going to happen. We luckily were able to get to a safer area; we parked the car and opened the hood and it was still making a loud banging sound in the engine. During everything I was able to plug my cellphone into the usb port to use the uvo app for my vehicle. I received two codes on possible condition with the engine control system. We contacted kia for towing and turned the car off. When the tow truck driver arrived, he started the car to drive it onto the tow truck and it sounded the same. We had the car towed to our local kia dealership in oakwood, GA. Because we know it should be under warranty. We were asked to provide them with oil change receipts and a few days later we were told we would have to pay to open the engine. If there was no sludge in the engine, then they would pay to open the engine and replace the engine. It has now been over 30 days since we towed it there and we haven't heard anything further. This car is a 2015 kia Soul 2. 0l with only 65939 miles. After, I researched this issue extensively it's very concerning, and I don't understand why kia refuses to recall or handle this model and engine. Furthermore, their response regarding this matter has not been a good-faith effort nor a genuine approach to take care of their customers concerns.
Oil leak that resulted in engine knocking noise.
