Kia Motor Soul owners have reported 33 problems related to engine noise (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Kia Motor Soul based on all problems reported for the Soul.
Much like others on here, was driving normally when within moments, the car began to make a noise immediately followed by smoke. This car has had regular maintenance and is just over 100k miles. These engines are obviously suffering from the same problem as the 1. 6 liter. Kia needs to recall these immediately.

Was driving on a main road and the car just stopped. It gave no warnings or made no notices. It just stopped working. I had to push the vehicle to a safe area and called aaa to come and tow the car to my home. My husband went to start it and said battery wasn't good so we bought a new one, then he states the starter was bad so we replaced it, then we finally got it to start only to hear the car make a loud slapping sound. The car doesn't drive and the engine has failed. I am the second owner so the warranty just ran out. I have only had the car for 18 months. I have taken it to have oil changes and keep it clean. I have taken really great care for the car and I can't understand why it needs a new engine, when it's a 2018 kia. Engines should last a long time.

Engine noise. Uses 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles.
One day it was fine, drove to louisville ky from lexington ky and noticed sporadic, weird shifting which seemed very off, shifting at the wrong time I had grown accustomed to for the previous 6 years on the way back home car would not go over 55-60 mph and to try and force it to downshift only made the engine rev extremely high and noisy with no forward motion, car acted as though it wanted to just quit altogether, and from that point on its been bogging down like a giant sat on the hood upon pushing the accelerator to get more speed, and upon backing off 9f the accelerator pedal the loud revving noise eased up and car seemed to recover somewhat until the next acceleration. . . The car has hesitated, engine idle is, for the most part, ok, but 55-60 is as fast as it will go unless going downhill, then I can 65 mph until the next time it needs to go up an incline then it shows to 40-45 with obvious stress trying to maintain a certain speed.

The contact owns a 2018 kia Soul. The contact stated that after getting an oil change and driving at approximately 40 mph, there was an abnormal metallic scraping sound coming from underneath the vehicle. The contact attempted to pull over when the check oil warning light illuminated. The vehicle shut-off and failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the failure was not related to the recent oil change. The contact took the vehicle to kia of bowie (16620 governor bridge rd, bowie, MD 20716, (301) 820-7500) who diagnosed that the engine had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The mechanic referenced a recall for 2014/2015 model years however, the 2018 model year vehicles were not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and confirmed that the contact's model year vehicle was not included. The approximate failure mileage was 84,000. The VIN was not available.
Car is burning oil at a very rapid rate and the engine is making noise when in idle. Mechanic checked the compression and found that the piston rings are wearing out and we need a new motor. Kia will not work with us at the moment, and says there is no evidence of the car burning oil even though we're having to add oil every 500 miles. We are now stuck making payments on a car that is not safe to drive for our family. We feel this should be included in the most recent recall on kias.

Internal engine noises, no engine codes or idiot lights of any kind.
It's running different makes strange noise and has engine light on.
Car loses power while in the middle of driving. I have almost been in multiple accidents. Also the vehicle is burning oil and the engine makes noises. I have the 2. 0l engine and my vehicle is doing the exact same thing that the 1. 6l engine is doing and that is being recalled for these issues. This vehicle is not safe to drive and this is a problem with all 2014 kia Souls regardless of the 1. 6 or 2. 0 engine.
The engine is burning oil and the oil light will not come on. The car can have no oil and the light will not register it at all. Also the car has a problem accelerating. This is so dangerous. There are recalls on the exact thing on the other models of this car. The recalls should extend to all the 2014 kia Soul vehicles due to them all doing the same thing and being unsafe. Car also wants to stall on occasion. I was driving and this happened. Plus the engine makes noise when idle.
We had the oil changed before a trip out of town. Confirmed oil was full, drove out of town, once back home the car started making a noise under the hood. No warning light at all. Had car towed to dealership, they now tell me that it spun a bearing and the whole engine needs replacing. We bought this car as a certified per-owned and it should be covered under warranty. Now they want to see all of my receipts for oil changes for the past 2 years. I have some but not all and I am getting the feeling that they don't want to fix my car. Kia, you know this is a known problem, you can see how many folks are having the same issue, do the right think and fix all of these cars!!!.
Driving the car at 50mph on a roawday on 5-25-2020 and the car made a horrible engine noise, slowed and would not start. It was towed to kia of streetsboro who found the engine failed at 95183 miles. We changed oil constantly at 3-4000 miles and are original owners. Never had a check engine light illuminate. Only issue ever was a warranty claim on a starter that failed. Kia found metal in the oil pan and verified our concerns, installing a remanufactured engine. Approximately 100 miles later, the car stalled at 35 mph and died, the check engine light flashed and we had it towed to waikem kia. They diagnosed a $1500. 00 catalytic converter failure indicating a high amount of carbon build up causing failure. Contacted kia who refuses to accept any cuplability for the cat failure. That's two times where a crash could have happened due to failure of the vehicle on the roadway.
The engine light keeps coming on and only ones after I accelerate. And then it goes away in a few days and comes back again. I get my oil change done regularly but I still kept noticing but it still kept happening. Happened my engine light key on did not go off in the car would start but makes a sound it will not accelerate. The mechanic said that the engine is messed up.

Car burns oil excessively. Has started making bad engine noises. Visited a kia dealership mechanic. Was advised that the engine requires replacement due to damage. Noise is when in motion. Standard driving.
In may 2020, four months after leasing new car, car stalled while driving it (wheel locked and engine shut down). Luckily only on a residential road and not highway. Car made slight engine sounds, but no dashboard lights indicators at all at any point. . Managed to drive car 10 minutes home (it stalled again). Towed car to dealership. Engine (one cylinder) had to be replaced was told put together incorrectly at factory, and that oil was almost completely used up, engine could have exploded. Confirmed could have stalled on highway. Replaced at no charge. Assured transmission fine and safe to drive. Reported to kia corporate right away and asked that conversation be recorded. . In April 2021 learn of recall for Soul that seems to describe the same issue. Went in for routine maintanence, told that it was a different problem and a different model.

Car started to consume oil and some knocking coming from the engine. Took it to deland kia with my recall notice recal#19v120 . Jon at deland kia stated he needed to do oil change and go from there. Had oil change on the 2/24/20 returned 3/7/20 almost no oil. He agreed it had no oil and needed to run some testing on it . Jon stated I needed to pay $99. 95 for a diagnostic. Why would I pay when it's a recall. He stated my car is not covered on the recall because my car has high miles. Told him that's absurd it is kia responsibility to take ownership for faulty engines and equipment. That's when I also told him the steering column is cranking again. Which was a recall and they deland kia, claimed to fix. Jon stated he spoke to kia and I didn't qualify for anything once again stating high mileage. I stated to jon it has 154,000 miles, it is impossible a car that has never had any issues to not be covered under the recall. Needless to say I left very upset and my car did not feel right when accelerating. Came straight home. On Sunday 3/8/20 I went to the store and my car started to rattle and shake and make noise as I was driving in a normal city road almost causing me to crash into another vehicle because I became scared and had no control of it. I was able to park my car in a business parking area and it sits there still today 3/09/2020. It is weird when I checked this site about my vehicles recall there was 1 now it has been cleared.
When using the auto start and stop feature when releasing the brake and the engine cranks back I hear a strange noise that sounds like a cat squalling when the engine starts. This doesn't happen when your not using auto start. Plus when you shift into park while stoped it doesn't make this noise. My wife also has the same issue with her car same year modle and make. No clue I fear this maybe related to the transmission. As when placing in park it doesn't make the noise when you release the brakes. My wife's car has less than 12000 miles and mine has 6000 miles and it's starting to make the noise. Seems to happen more when hard braking occurs . Sound is comming from the drivers side of the car.
I was driving home and car was making a noise. Sounded like a truck. I check the oil and it was very low and dark. It had recently got an oil change. I put in 3 quarts and then it was at the right level. It stopped making the noise. But I smell gas from the tailpipe. This was before it sounded like a truck. I stepped on thee gas and the car barely moves. Then the check engine light showed up it was misfire codes multiple cylinder. I hear a loud hissing sound like a turbo or some sort of exhaust leak. Bad mileage burns a quart of oil every two days. The transmission does not shift too and it misfires.
My kia Soul is having identical issues to NHTSA campaign number 19v120000which led to recall sc176 by kia which only covered the 1. 6l models, not the 2. 0l which is the vehicle I drive. I experienced a loss of power and loud knocking type sound while driving. I was traveling approximately 30-35 m/h on a city street. I did not notice a check engine or oil light during this event. I checked my oil level and I had no oil showing on the dip stick. I filled the oil reservoir with the correct oil type and drove home less than a mile. The vehicle would not accelerate as normal. No smoke was noticed coming from the engine. I contacted kia customer service and was given a case number (13392784), and directed to bring the vehicle into the dealership for a diagnostics check. A similar incident occurred one other time where the engine again burned all of the oil, with no signs of a leak on with the engine of the ground where the car is parked. The oil has been monitored regularly since this first incident. The oil has been changed on several occasions and no oil leaks has been noticed. From my research into this issue these symptoms line up with what the affected vehicles experienced before they were recalled. The loss of power, engine noise and shifting difficulties first occurred on October 13, 2019. I asking this case be looked into and see if the scope of the recall did not cover all vehicles potentially at risk. The milage is approximately 74,000 miles.
In March 2019, vehicle began making noise and was brought in to kia dealership service department . Was told that oil was unexpectedly low despite last oil change in November 2018 and mileage/use of vehicle was much lower than normal during this time period. In October 2019, vehicle began making same noise and before it could be taken in, vehicle stopped functioning mid-traffic during left hand turn on to a side road from a 45 mph state highway. Brought again to same kia dealership service department. Technician reported on diagnosis report that "oil level seemed low (added 1 quart)" and verbally reported by phone that engine has unrepairable damage and entire engine needs to be replaced. We were quoted $6,000-$7,000 by the service department at the kia dealership to replace engine. Vehicle is currently sitting in our driveway unusable after being an extremely reliable vehicle requiring only regular and usual maintenance until March of this year.

Damaged engine due to oil system issue. Dealership serviced ever since purchase. During the first mile of the last drive a engine noise began. The vehicle was immediately stopped and engine shut off. Upon further inspection, the oil showed low and it is believed that the engine spun a bearing. Car does not have any leaks, no burning oil out of the exhaust. The vehicle is within oil change factory recommendation and only 65 thousand miles on motor. Vehicle speed was 25 mph on a city street.
July 212019 while driving. . . Heard a ticking/,pinging sound pulled over. Oil dry in engine. Oil change every 3. 000 miles. . . Records to prove. . . Filled oil then engine failed on highway. Contacted kia case #13292943 . Immediately assigned case manager charles. Upon returning my calls told not covered as powertrain warranty over. Short block needs replacing. Also timing chain and pump per recommendation by my mechanic because of damage to engine and possibility of chain stretching. . Kia old saybrook CT replacing block. 145,000 miles. . Not told where replaced short block has come from. Dearlership said just "from kia" . Excellent maintainence record. Copies is all oil changes. Told no way of indication of this to happen. Labor is being charged. . $1,500. 00 read many issues with 2014 kia Soul but not recalled and should be at no cost to consumer!.
I was driving, slowing down before a turn, when there was a screeching noise and then the engine shut off. The car has not cranked since. I have tried to jump start it but the battery is not the problem.
My family and I were driving down the road when the car began making noises and died. My husband was able to guide the car to a stop but we were unable to get out of the lane and onto a shoulder. After three hours, the car was towed to the dealership. The following day, we were told that the rod bearings locked and we needed a new engine. We were told that there was still oil in the car and no metal shavings in the oil pan so it was not the result of poor maintenance. The car had been in for an oil change and maintenance check on April 3, 2019 at the same dealership. The service department said they have seen this before in kias and that it seems to be a common issue. The car has 80k miles on it.
2. 0 engine connecting rod went bad. When excelaraited car backfired loud screech sound from under hood and then knockin from engine from connecting rod. Was in motion when this happened.
Engine started making noise then engine rod went through engine block while on highway traveling approx 60mph. Car stopped and coasted to side of the road while smoke poured from engine. Oil all over road and engine. Towed to dealership. Dealership says it's not related to recall #19v120. Contacted kia customer service. Case rep says it should be covered and they have to contact the district service rep in the area. Dealership refuses to help and keeps trying to sell new engine. District service rep won't give kia customer service any info. They've requested info twice with no response. I keep getting passed to voicemails with no return calls from kia customer service, I've tried email as well.
I currently am on my fourth catalytic converter. My car has 240000 miles and my dealer informed me they were to only update a program and replace the converter. I let them know about the engine noise and they replaced the converter and it was making the same noise at 80000 miles when they replaced it the first time. Even after I left the dealer at the first replacement I had to return the next day after picking my car up from morgan auto group. This recall has permanently damaged my car I was lead to believe I just needed the converter replaced again and again. Finally when I received the recall letter I was convinced my car would finally be repaired properly. It was stated in the letter my engine would be replaced if need be. The dealer repeatedly explained they were to complete the system upgrade and replace the converter and nothing more. Even after I had a diagnostic test done they could only tell me I had to replace my fuel injectors at a price of 1200. 00 so I had them replaced and still my engine runs as described in the recall with damage to the pistons or another issue. I am hoping to have this issue resolved as I and my family rely on my vehicle.
Daughter driving in local traffic 30 mph. Blue smoke and engine noise then total loss of power. Towed to mechanic and said there is a hole in the engine and metal shards that came out the hole. All oil spilled out. Taking to kia dealer for review. Engine is lost. 67,000 miles.
I was driving at a slow speed and I noticed a strange noise. I was going up a hill and experienced a loss of power and the noise got worse. I pulled over and saw the oil light flickering below 1500 rpm so I shut it down. I waited a few minutes and checked the oil. The oil was full. I had it towed to a shop to diagnose and they told me an internal engine component has failed and that I would need a new engine. I had it towed to a kia dealership to confirm. I received the same diagnosis. The car has 65k miles on it and requires a new engine. The car has been maintained and was not neglected. I reached out to kia for assistance and they are unwilling to assist. They have also discontinued the long block engine replacement so the repair costs more now. There seems to be a shortage of the 2. 0l engine so it isn't available from rebuild shops or junkyards. I suspect that the high rate of failure of the 2. 0l engine is to blame for the shortage.
Car was in good condition and well maintained according to manufacturer's service schedule. It was last serviced on 7/31/18 when it passed nys inspection. The owner was informed on 9/18/18 @ 7:03 pm by daughter that car started making a strange sound on 9/17/18. Planned to have dealer check out car on 9/19/18. On 9/18/18 @ approximately 8:35 pm, while being driven on the local portion of an interstate highway, the car's oil light blinked on and off. A few minutes later the check engine light went on. A few minutes later the car engine began to smoke and smoke came into the car through the air vents. The driver, my daughter's boyfriend, pulled over into the breakdown lane, turned off the car, got out, stepped away from it and the engine erupted in flames. By approximately 8:50 pm the car was totally engulfed in flames. The car looks like it was fire bombed.
I was driving my 2015 kia Soul on my normal route to work on 4/5/18. It was a dark, clear morning on a busy highway. I was moving with traffic at approximately 60 mph. At just about 5:30 a. M. , the vehicle made a noise and lost acceleration. I was able to get to the side of the highway and park the vehicle. I was parked for approximately 3 minutes when I saw smoke and flames coming from the engine. I exited the vehicle. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. No other persons or vehicles were involved in this incident. I purchased the vehicle new and it had had no significant mechanical work in the 2 years that I owned it, just normal oil changes and a couple of safety recalls. Neither the firefighter on the scene, nor the insurance adjuster, were able to determine the cause of the fire, only that it started in the engine.
I purchased a kia Soul 2013 + brand new in 2013, on 5/13/2017 the check oil light came on while I was driving, I pulled over and checked the oil and it was low even though I had recently had the oil changed, I put 2 qts of oil in the car, but every time I drove the car began making a noise whenever I accelerated. While driving the car on 5/14/17 the check engine light came on and the noise persisted. Though the car was still drivable, I had it towed to the kia dealership on 5/15/17 where I purchased the car to the service department. Later that day I was told that the motor had gone out in my car when I asked why I was told that the mechanic had left. The following day on 5/16/17 I called the dealership back and was told that there sludge in my motor caused from oil being burned in the motor and the sludge was not able to filter though the motor. I was told that it would cost approximately $4220 to replace it with a used motor. The next day on 5/17/17 I was online looking for cheaper motors when I ran across articles regarding the 2016 recall of 600,000+ other kia vehicles all with defective engines. After reading what happened to the other engines I realized that the same thing was happening to my engine. I called kia customer assistance center and a case was made regarding my car. On 5/31/17 I was told that my case had been escalated to the escalation agent. Today, on 6/5/2017 brenda the escalation agent called to notify me that kia would not cover my car because it has over 100k miles on it and because there is sludge located in the engine. I told yes, that is why I wanted kia to look into it because it a vehicle with barely 114k miles on it that is 4 years old and with maintenance that was kept up the engine shouldn't have been burning oil to produce sludge in it. I was told I would need to request more work to be done on the car to see if the motor was defective.
Noticed that my car was making noise while driving. Checked oil and found there was no oil. I was getting oil changes at every 3000 miles then changed to 7500 miles per recommended. Changed back to every 3000 miles because of significant oil loss. Car was still burning oil and empty before 3000 mile change. Also noticed it was burning a significant amount of gas also. Took to dealership who did an induction test and told me I had carbon buildup on my pistons and my rings were sticking so I would need a new engine. Placed a claim with kia and they denied my claim siting poor fuel and lack of maintenance records. They said I was not using the "recommended" gas stations. I was not asked for any maintenance records and how do they know what gas stations I was using. I feel that this is a defect with the engine. I am currently at 85,000 miles.
