While at work, driving, and in acceleration, the engine would start knocking. On my way home, the knocking got louder. Half way home, the engine stalled out on a major highway and I had to coast the vehicle through en exit ramp to stop on a service road. Fluid was found leaking from under the vehicle. Having put the vehicle in a service shop, the mechanic advised that the rod blew a hole straight through the engine block. Said it was more likely from the engine overheating, but would not be officially certain. Mechanic later pulled me aside and informed me that kia had been having major problems with their engines blowing. He also advised me there was a recall situation going on, but couldn't be certain whether my vehicle was or would be included in that.

Regarding recall sc176 the engine is overheating and has engine damage which can lead to the vehicle starting on fire. Have brought it to 2 dealerships and they are just trying to brush it off saying nothing is wrong even though it is overheating and an independent mechanic states that there is piston and cylinder damage.

Head-gaskets and/or thermostats failing under normal driving conditions and low miles. I am on 2nd head-gasket and 4th thermostat and only at 109000 mi. Twice this has happened while driving on freeway and twice while around town. Fluid levels were good and other maintenance done regularly. I have talked with multiple kia dealership service departments and they start by saying that is not normal then after looking over the car saying its a normal thing for Souls. These failures have caused the engine to overheat each time once the thermostat sticks closed. No engine warning lights and temp gauge only showed the overheat 2 out of four times. They seem to be failing fairly regularly around 20000 mi.
