Purchased used with approx 30k mi from kia dealer. Had oil changed approx every 4k mi. Had oil changed at 131,157 mi on 5/9/2019. On 6/28/2019, was driving on interstate and engine started making terrible noise with severe syncopated vibrations and saw some smoke/steam coming from right (passenger) side of hood/engine. Pulled over at immediately available off ramp. Mileage was 135,191. Mechanic said engine needed to be replaced and problem was likely caused by some aspect of the variable valve timing not actuating in order to properly tension the timing chain. Towed vehicle to kia dealership and they confirmed engine needed to be replaced. We drove the car regularly for 100,000 mi with no mechanical problems at all, maintained it faithfully, and it failed instantaneously. That indicates a design flaw. If I had been traveling in traffic, the sudden loss of power could have been injurious or fatal.

Tl- the contact owns a 2014 kia Soul. The contact stated that while driving a highway rate of speed from another state , there had been other drivers on the roadway honking horns to alert the contact that the vehicle was smoking. There was an abnormal noise progressing from the engine assembly. Upon further inspecting from the rear view mirror as well as the front view mirror, the contact noticed the other drivers, extensive smoke emitted from the front of the vehicle as it was on fire. The vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road, the contact exited the vehicle as the fire erupted. The fire caused catastrophic damages and was towed to a facility by the insurance company who indicated the vehicle was a total loss. The dealer janesville kia, 3419 ryan rd, janesville, WI 53545, (608) 743-9600 was not contacted, had not verified if the vehicle was included or excluded from a recall campaign concerning NHTSA campaign numbers: 19v120000 (engine, engine and engine cooling) and () so the contact was waiting to determine if they may determine the cause of the fire. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, indicated that they would follow up in three business days, provided a case number but had not yet responded to the contact (owner). The contact was left with no vehicle. The contact was not included in NHTSA action number: pe19004 (exterior lighting, electrical system, engine and engine cooling, unknown or other, engine, service brakes, hydraulic). My car does not seem to be covered under recall 19v120000, however it is having the same issues associated with that recall number. High exhaust temperatures within the catalytic converter may cause internal engine damage to the pistons and connecting rods, resulting in an engine stall and failure. There is engine shavings in my oil and it is making a horrible noise. It is no longer driveable. I took it into kia service previously and they told me it was related to the above concerns,.

While driving on hwy engine failure:(bearing rod knocking, thrown rod, engine seizure) loud engine knocking caused by bearing rod knocking then a loud sound (rod getting thrown) engine failure. Thrown rod came through engine block and hit starter. The engine seized while on the hwy.
This is an update to what I previously reported. There is currently only a recall for the base model of the kia Soul but this is affecting the + and ! models of this vehicle as well and 19v120000 recall definitely needs to be extended to cover all engines in all models of this vehicle, the 2. 0l gdi. As previously mentioned in my prior complaint, my vehicle was well maintained and while driving my car made a loud noise and lost power and began to slow down. No warning lights displayed on my vehicle. It was discovered that the rod had pierced through the engine block causing the oil to leak. This is urgent that this recall is extended to the 2. 0l engine.
Tl- the contact owns a 2015 kia Soul. The contact stated that while driving 60 mph they heard a loud abnormal noise, then the vehicle stalled. The engine warning light illuminated. The contact pulled over and had the vehicle towed to taylor kia of boardman 7870 market st, youngstown, OH 44512 (330) 886-4942. On 02/15/2019 I was driving on county hwy h in delta township, WI at 45 mph when suddenly I heard a loud noise and my 2014 kia Soul lost power. As it lost power, first my oil light started blinking and then my check engine light came on and started blinking also. I was able to turn it around and drive approx. 100 ft into the delta town hall parking lot where I discovered my engine was smoking and I had lost numerous fluids out of the engine. I then called a local wrecker and they towed it to their shop. A&l auto in iron river, WI. They stated after looking at it that something made a large hole in the side of the engine and most likely the engine would need to be replaced. I then requested they tow it to the kia dealership in duluth, mn where I purchased the vehicle.

The vehicle then was taken to jones kia (2001 bel air rd, fallston, MD 21047, (410) 877-1700) where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine had oil consumption and a test was performed. The ecm was updated on February 3, 2021 however, the failure recurred. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA campaign number: 20v750000 (engine) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided the contact with a case number. The manufacturer declined to provide an engine replacement. The failure mileage was approximately 102,000.

Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Soul. While driving 65 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated and an abnormal noise was heard. The contact continued driving to his house. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the engine was replaced, but the engine warning indicator was still illuminated. Abeloff Nissan (located at 3259 PA-611, bartonsville, PA 1832, (877) 608-0091) and the manufacturer were notified of failure. The failure mileage was 134,000.
On 09/23/2018, while driving 70 on the highway about 1 month after my tune up, my car started making this horrible noise and the engine and oil lights started flashing and the car started jerking and rattling really hard. I pulled over and discovered that the engine blew a spark wire (I have a video). I drove to the nearest advance auto parts and a mechanic of 30 years said he never seen nothing like it. The next day I took it back to castrol (who completed my tune up) and they changed all spark plugs and wires stating that they never seen that happen before and there were no leaks and no indication as to why that happened. On 12/172018, the car started jerking and rattling again while going about 45-50 on a main road and once I parked, it completely shut off. I had it towed to ed voyle kia and was told that there was a recall on my engine so it will be replaced. They put me in a rental and two months later I was told that yes, there is a recall, however, my VIN # hasn't come up yet so I can pay out of pocket and be reimbursed once my VIN# come up. They took the rental back and I'm now without transportation. I can't get to work and I still owe about 10k on my car. No one is helping me at kia and I've been given the run around. I literally was provided a po box to send my complaint to. I've spoken to several people yet no one seem to care.
While driving on interstate at 60 mph loud sound from engine and all power lost. Was able to pull over to shoulder and dip stick showed no oil in engine. Oil just change by two months prior by kia dealership. Looked under car and pool of oil. Had to have vehicle towed to dealership and was informed the engine blew and it was not covered under manufacturers warranty as we purchased this vehicle used from the dealership and the warranty is not transferable. The vehicle had 70,000 miles and the engine blew. So much for a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty when kia does not transfer the warranty to a vehicle they sell at the dealership. Its called a manufacturer warranty not a owner warranty. Kia needs to step up and take responsibility for the faulty engines they have used. The dealership even admitted this was a engine failure and not owner failure. I have owned 4 kia's and will never own another one.
Tl the contact owned a 2015 kia Soul. While the contact's son was driving 60 mph, smoke appeared from the front of the vehicle, the vehicle stalled, and an abnormal noise was heard. The contact's son exited the vehicle and observed that the bottom of the engine was on fire. Within a matter of minutes, the entire vehicle caught on fire. The fire department extinguished the fire and indicated that the vehicle was a total loss. The vehicle was towed. The cause of the fire was unknown. There were no injuries. The manufacturer and dealer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Soul. The contact stated while driving 35 mph, an abnormal noise was heard as the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated in addition he heard a loud boom noise, and the vehicle ceased in the middle of the road. The contact stated he saw oil leaking under the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed with needing an engine replacement. The manufacturer was informed of failure and informed the contact that no recall was associated with VIN. The contact towed the vehicle to his residence. The contact stated on April 26, 2019 he received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 19v120000 (engine, engine and engine cooling). The contact called the manufacturer, were he was notified the vehicle would be towed to local dealer demontrond kia (14101 north fwy, houston, TX 77090, (281) 607-1973) where it was diagnosed that the damage on the engine was not associated to NHTSA campaign number: 19v120000 (engine, engine and engine cooling). The vehicle was not repaired and was still at the dealer. The failure mileage was 104,000.
My Soul began to make a terrible noise at 52,000 miles. Took it to the dealer because we had purchased the additional warranty to extend it to 100,000 and was told the engine bearings had failed. The mechanic at the dealership said he didn't see much sludge in the engine and couldn't see a reason why kia would deny the claim. Although the oil had been changed appropriately we couldn't produce all the documentation on the spot. The local dealership took video and sent in to kia, we were told that kia would not honor their warranty and we were on our own.
The contact owns a 2015 kia Soul. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle began to idle and she heard an abnormal noise. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer demontrond kia (14101 north fwy, houston, texas 77090, (281) 801-6254) however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The contact stated she continued to experience the failure. The vehicle was next taken to parkway family Mazda (22565 us-59, kingwood, TX 77339: (281) 242-8211) where the mechanic was also unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
On 10/25/2017 while driving on the highway, my 2014 kia Soul caught on fire - spontaneously and without warning (no apparent issues in operating the car, warning lights on the dash, etc. ). Two fellow motorists honked their horns and flashed their lights in an effort to signal me. The back windshield began to 'fog up' due to the heat/fire, and we immediately pulled off the highway. In an effort to escape this emergency, I along with my son, who was driving, immediately got out of the vehicle and moved a safe distance away before calling 911. At this point flames were coming from both underneath the vehicle and from the engine compartment. The car was soon engulfed in flames. Multiple fire engines responded to the scene in extinguishing the fire and securing the scene. The car was a complete loss (see pictures attached in the report). It is important to note that my 2014 kia Soul was taken to a local kia dealership between 10/17/2017 - 10/19/2017 for diagnostics due to lights (internal and on the dash) flickering and an abnormal sound. The dealership's service department replaced the battery, performed a safety inspection, but were unable to identify the flickering lights issue, nor were they able to identify the source of the abnormal sound although they did acknowledge its presence. The service department released the vehicle to me and advised me to drive the vehicle to see what happened. My car was brought home, parked, and not driven until the incident on 10/25/2017.
