37 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2006 Nissan Armada

Failure Date: 06/14/2010

When starting out from a parked position, sometimes the brakes will make a grinding noise when pressed. If you hit your brakes during this period there is a grind pulsating feeling in the brakes. I don't know if the brakes are really even working during this time, but the only the way to clear this is to somehow stop the car without destroying something and turning the car off and then restarting it. This seems to fix the problem. But it will intermittently do it again in about a month or so. Is Nissan doing anything about this problem? I never really feel secure driving because I don't know if this will happen when I 'm at full speed and really need the brakes!.

38 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2004 Nissan Armada

Failure Date: 05/04/2010

While exiting the freeway, going approx. 45 mph the brakes on my 2004 Nissan Armada completely went out. When I pressed on the brake pedal I heard an awful grinding noise and the felt a vibration throughout the car and the pedal just went to the floor. The 'brake' light lit up on the dash and the emergency brake pedal moved 4-5 inches upwards from its normal position. This was the first time my brakes have completely gone out. I wasn't stopping and narrowly missed plowing into the back of a delivery truck. I was able to pull over at a safe place and call a tow truck- it was towed to a Nissan dealership. According to the dealer, my brake booster assembly was defective and they would replace it to the tune of $1300. It is still at the dealership being repaired. I reported this to Nissan hq on 5/6/2010 as well. I had 2 kids in the car with me at the time and this was an extremely terrifying event! the consumer stated the dealer informed her the vehicle needed a new brake booster assembly. The consumer stated there have been no other failures since the brake booster was replaced. The consumer did notice there was a difference in braking ability when she applied the brake. The dealer stated there was nothing wrong. Updated 10/08/10.

39 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2005 Nissan Armada

Failure Date: 03/02/2010

The first time the brake issue occurred was at the first start of the day. I turned on the vehicle began reversing out of my drive when I applied the brakes the warning light came on and a loud scraping sound came from the front end. I could also feel the grinding in the brake pedal. When the vehicle was turned off then restarted problem was gone. A few weeks later the incident happened again. This time it was the middle of the day and the car had already been driven before. Again when the brakes were applied a loud grinding noise was heard and vibrations in the brake pedal. Again turning the vehicle off then restarting got rid of the problem.

40 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2005 Nissan Armada

Failure Date: 10/11/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Armada. The contact was decelerating to exit the freeway when she heard an unusual grinding noise. She attempted to engage the brakes but to no avail. She then moved the vehicle off the roadway and shut off the engine. When restarting, the vehicle resumed normal operation. The dealer performed a diagnostic and discovered that the vehicle computer would need to be reprogrammed to repair the braking system. The vehicle was left with the dealer awaiting repairs. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 110,000.

41 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2005 Nissan Armada

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

Like many others, when applying brakes, harsh grinding noise and inability to brake easily. The problem goes away when car re-started. Has happened about 25 times in 3 years. Seems to be computer issue but never happens when at service center. When my wife drove the car , the first time it happened shook her quite a bit as she was in high traffic area going about 40 mph. It is unsafe to turn the engine off and on while driving but this is only way to get brakes operating.

42 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2005 Nissan Armada

Failure Date: 05/26/2009

We have a 2005 Nissan Armada (which was purchased new) it has had an issue where the "brake" light comes on and there is rapid pulsating/grinding noise from the brake system. During this event, the brake stopping distance is severely impacted and braking is dangerously inconsistent. We have brought vehicle into Nissan dealer and been told because there "is no current stored code" they could not do anything for us and that we needed "to drive the vehicle in while this event occurred", so they could see what happened. There is no way it would be remotely safe to do so!!!! Nissan you are requesting a very unsafe procedure!!!!!! each time this brake issue has happened (at least 6 with my wife and 1 with me), we were fortunate enough to pull the vehicle over and turn it off. In doing so it appears the vehicle "reset" and once turned back on the vehicle appeared to operate properly. Here are our occurrences: - once on/or around 9/2005- didn't think much at this point as we already had heard about issues with rotors and thought that was connected - 4/23/2007- went to dealer - 8/13/2008- called dealer told to drive it in while it was happening by dealer - right before 10/8/2008 on 10/8 we brought into dealer for this problem and a couple other issues - 5/14/2009 - 5/18/2009 - 5/26/2009 it happened to me with both of my grade school boys on vacation in rush hour traffic in northern California. The vehicle had a very clear issue and I had to make some tough traffic negotiations to get off of the freeway. Once off I turned off the vehicle and sat there for a short period of time. I turned it back on and luckily made it to my destination without further incident. I will be speaking with the Nissan dealership again, to give them one last chance to try and fix this issue. They have done nothing as of yet and appear to lack any interest in fixing this problem. Take a look at any forums or car complaint web-sites there are numerous such complaints for same issue.

43 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2004 Nissan Armada

Failure Date: 12/05/2008

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Armada. While driving 60 mph, a warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle has been to the dealer approximately three times for repair. The first time it was taken to have the brakes repaired for making grinding noises. The contact stated that she was using the wrong brakes. When the accelerator pedal is depressed, the pressure goes down and the vehicle decelerates. The contact would have to bring the vehicle to the dealer in order to determine the cause of the failure. In addition, there is a clicking noise coming from the transmission. The dealer cannot locate the cause of the failures. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 30,000 and current mileage was 84,000. Updated 05/08/09. The right side exhaust manifold was replaced and the engine light had illuminated. Updated 05/11/09.

44 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2005 Nissan Armada

Failure Date: 10/01/2008

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Armada. While driving approximately 15 mph, the contact applied pressure to the brake pedal and the brake pedal fell to the floor. The contact heard a grinding noise coming from the brakes. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technicians stated the brake booster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated the contact would be responsible for the cost. The approximate failure mileage was 103,000.

45 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2004 Nissan Armada

Failure Date: 05/15/2008

When this first happened there was no pressure in the brake pedal when attempting to stop. The pedal shakes harshly and a grinding noise can be heard. The pedal itself goes to the floor as if all the brake fluid in the system is gone. When this happens, there is no warning that the condition exist except for a "brake" light warning in the instrument panel. However this does not help, because every time that this problem has occurred, the vehicle is in motion already. The light might as well state "get ready to crash". The brakes stay like that until the vehicle is turned off and then back on. This has happened at least 10 times since then, in different climates and times. I have changed brake discs and pads and topped the fluid off thinking maybe a difference in pressure was caused by the fluid or the amount of material that was left on the braking surfaces; this is not the case. Numerous posts on the internet have pointed this exact failure out and a few owners have been in accidents according to the posts on Armada specific websites. Nissan has always had issues with the brakes on this model. The first issue was with the front rotors being too small for the size of the vehicle, causing premature warping due to heat. I had this fixed a few times at the dealership as well as having to replace them myself a few times. This was a design flaw on Nissan's part. The same is with the root cause of the brake booster failure; bad design.

46 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2006 Nissan Armada

Failure Date: 04/18/2007

Brake indicator on dash lights up, horrible grinding noise and car has very little braking ability. Had to pull over and let car slowly coast to a stop. Switched off engine set for a few minutes, restarted and vehicle was back to normal. Multiple times. Took in to dealer and was told could possibly be a brake booster at a cost of about 1000. Oo . ( 1000 dollar guess for a possible life threatening issue ???) looked in forum and found out that this is happening quite a bit but nissaan is not doing anything to fix. Are they waiting for someone to die before they do recall. Car has been sitting for months . Can't risk having family in car and not being able to stop at anytime.

47 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2004 Nissan Armada

Failure Date: 09/06/2005

I have issues with my brakes on a frequent basis. Since I purchased my car, I have been having this issue. I have taken my car to several Nissan dealers. When my car was under warranty and I would also get the run around. I have been told my Nissan that unless the issue happens when the car is in the shop then they are unable to diagnose the problem. When I apply the brakes, the brake pedal went to the floor and I hear a loud grinding noise from the front of the vehicle. This happens while I am driving. The only way to get it wo work is if turn off the truck while cruising and turn it back on while cruising and it fixes the issue and I am able to stop fine. I have contacted Nissan before and they failed to help me. I have two small children. This issue is happening with several people. The Nissan Armada 2004 was the first Armada model, which this issue is a factory defect that is impacting hundreds of car owners. This issue needs to be taken seriously, since brakes is life threatening.

48 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2005 Nissan Armada

Failure Date: 07/01/2005

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Armada. When the brake pedal was depressed, the contact heard a grinding noise followed by reduced braking ability. Also, while in traffic, the electrical parking brake spontaneously engaged itself and caused the vehicle to come to a complete halt. The dealer stated that she would have to pay $600 to repair the parking brake. Currently, the vehicle has not been repaired. The manufacturer did not assist. The failure mileage was 24,000 and current mileage was 41,000. Updated 05/13/09 the consumer stated repairs have been made on the brake system 8 times. Updated 05/13/09.

49 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2004 Nissan Armada

Failure Date: 01/11/2005

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Armada. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle took a long time to stop when the brakes were applied. The vehicle felt as if it were misaligned when attempting to stop. The contact took the vehicle to a local dealer and they acknowledged the failure with the brake system, but were unable to determine the cause of failure. She later returned to the dealer and they placed a kit on the brake system. One year later, the brakes began making a loud grinding noise and the vehicle became difficult to stop. The dealer repaired the vehicle again, however, the contact still had to apply pressure to the brakes at least four times in order to stop the vehicle. There were no warning lights present. The manufacturer is conducting an investigation. The current mileage was 30,000 and failure mileage was 3,500.
