37 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/24/2005

This compliant is applicable to Toyota Tundra trucks ~2000 to 2003 models. A very strong brake vibration felt through-out the vehicle coming down mountain passes (I live in colorado). Even with the appropriate down-shifting the brake vibration is frightening causing the driver to wonder if the vehicle will be able to be slowed after a while. This is a known defect to Toyota motor corp and is addressed in the Toyota service bulletin br004-02 and is only addressed upon complaint by the customer and then again only at no charge if the vehicle is within the warranty limitations. The fix is a design change in the form of repalcement of the front caliper assembly and the front rotors. The rear drums might also have to be replaced with drums of greater mass and rigidity, according to the TSB br004-02.

38 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/01/2005

My 2000 Toyota Tundra sr5 was purchased in Aug 2000. In June 2005, the dealer noticed excessive rust on the frame and other parts of the underbody. My car is only used a few times per month on the weekend and only has 16,000 miles. The brakes needed to be replaced in 2006, the dealer noted excessive rust again on the calipers. The consumer was informed the rust condition was due to improper metal preparation during factory build. Updated 11/16/09.

39 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/10/2005

1. Excessive break vibration during stoping. Thought to at first related to tire balance. 2. Front brake rotors warped from heat buildup and improper ventilation. 3. Contacted local Toyota service department. Advised of (Toyota TSB #br004-02 brake upgrade) authorizing replacement dust shields, front rotors, calipers, pads, rear drums, and pads. Toyota refuses to repair with mileage being 41,000 as truck is not in warrenty. Toyota would like to repair for $1803. 25. Toyota would not comment on why I was not advised of this problem before warrenty expired. As of now, have contacted Toyota southeast and issue not resolved. Tundra will now have to be repaired out- o-f pocket, as break failure is imminent, and safety is compromised. Independent mechanic suggest replacing rotors with performace cooling disc and ceramic pads to minimize warping.

40 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/05/2005

I have brake problems. I have less than 36000 and my brake pad needed to be replaced. I have also had a abnormal vibration in the truck when applying the brakes. This has been the case since I purchased the vechilce new. Thought it was normal for the truck but guess not. Toyota is paying for the parts ,and I'm paying for labor to replace rotors, pads, calipers to resolve the issue. Costing me $400.

43 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/03/2005

I recently bought a ?certified used? 2001 Toyota Tundra and purchased the extended warranty. Within a few months, the truck brakes started acting funky. I took it to the dealership for routine oil change, mentioned the problem, and they said they would adjust the brakes. This helped it brakes for a few more months. The brakes started to get worse and would vibrate the entire truck when braking. I did an internet search and learned of a TSB for Toyota Tundra braking problem where Toyota recognized that the brake calipers were undersized for the truck. I took the truck to the dealer and the warranty covered replacement of the brake calipers and other components, but would not cover the rotors that were damaged by their factory defective braking calipers. I feel that Toyota should recall all Toyota models with the known braking problem, and reimburse all owners that have had costly repairs. Thanks, jay.

44 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/25/2005

There was a severe vibration in my front brakes when driving with my pickup bed loaded with wood and coming down a hill. Also, happened to a lesser extent when pickup bed was empty and coming off the freeway on a downslope. Had my brakes serviced, and was advised of TSB br004-02. Front brake calipers, backing plates, brake hoses, wheel bearings, oil seals and flange bolts were replaced. Because the vehicle is out of warranty I had to pay over $2,000 plus tax. I feel this is wrong due to TSB should be a recall. There is obvious design fault in the sizing of the calipers.

45 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/21/2005

To whom it may concern: I am writing this letter in an effort to make Toyota motors corporation responsible for the defective braking system on Toyota Tundras 2001 ,and probably other years, specifically the front brake calipers . From what the Toyota dealerships tell me these trucks came with front calipers that are too small for the vehicle and they get too hot and as a result they warp the discs and this creates a moderate to violent shaking of the front end of the vehicle every time the brakes are applied . Toyota motors repaired the issue, by installing bigger calipers with more surface area, as long as the car was within the warranty 3 years or 36,000 miles . It is my opinion that this issue should be examined and be considered a goverment recall because it is not that a part broke or got worn out before the warranty expired . It is more that the car came with brakes not capable of withstanding the heat generated by the friction b/w the pads and the disc due to the design of the caliper and as a result it warps the discs causing owners to resurface or replace discs frequently without solving the problem or solving it for a short period of time and needless to say this ,to me, is a big safety issue not only because the brakes do not work properly but also because all that shaking and vibration can loosen up other components in the suspension or braking system compromising the safety of the vehicle and as a result this may cause an accident . Many disappointed Tundra owners express their frustration about this issue on different forums one of them is Toyota Tundra forums and another is Tundra solutions forum. I respectfully request revision of this problem bacause a lot of us can't afford or think that it is not fair to pay b/w $2,200- $3,200 that the dealerships and brake shops charge to solve this problem. Thank you for your attention.

46 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

The malfunctioning brakes, front requiring new oversize brake pads, rotors and calipers. In re to two 2000 Toyota Tundra's. The VIN #'s are: 5tbrt3412y5100945 & 5tbbt4817y508576.

47 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/21/2004

Vehicle has excessive vibration/shaking when braking, especially downhill, and most notably at speeds between 40-50 mph. Repair attempts have been made at 20,341 miles and 24,312 miles replacing calipers, rotors and drums, as well as attempts at resurfacing badly warped rotors/drums. Condition still exists at current mileage of 28,128 miles. Fear that this is a dangerous condition that will result in loss of handling, control, traction or may lead to an accident if brakes fail to stop the vehicle. As this also does not appear to be an isolated case, this condition is likely to affect vehicle reputation and (re-sale) value as well.

48 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/01/2004

While braking the vehicle vibrated. The problem was due to a factory defect on the front rotors and calipers.

49 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/26/2004

I have major vibration when applying my brakes on the 2000 Toyota Tundra. I have had 2 brake jobs done, resurfacing rotors, new pads. The problem reapeared after about 2 weeks. Went back to brake shop and they said there is nothing they can do other than to continue to resurface or replace rotors, calipers, and pads. They also infromed me that they are aware of Toyota service bulletins but, unless you are within the manufacturers warranty, the dealer will not fix the problem. If Toyota acknowledges a defect in parts/design, how come they are not being held accountable for these repairs on vehicles that were manufactured prior to the bulletin releases? please, help us Tundra owners who have been left out in the cold!.

50 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/16/2004

Brake rotors warp and cause severe vibrations. Seems they were not designed for a truck this heavy.

51 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/14/2004

(1) on 7/30/03 at 5796 miles, only 10 months after purchasing a 2002 Toyota Tundra (9/27/2002), I experienced a violent vibration during light braking at speeds of 45-60 mph. 2) concerned for my and other motorists' safety, I took it in to the kirkland Toyota dealership. (3) kirkland Toyota completed the front brakes campaign and replaced the following under op code br2005: calipers, brake pads, wheel bearings, backing plate, turn rotors, and tubes. They also bled the brakes and torqued the wheels. (1) on 8/13/04, at 10494 miles, I noticed that the violent vibration had returned. (2) concerned for my and other motorists' safety, I took it in to the kirkland Toyota dealership again. (3) kirkland Toyota test drove the vehicle and found the TSB on rear brake vibration, op code 472151 combo code a. The service dept. Relaced both rear drums. (1) the following day, 8/14/04 I test drove the vehicle and discovered that the violent vibration during light braking had increased, now occurring on both grades and flat surfaces. (2) my next step is to contact the dealership again, but I am not encouraged that a solution will be found.

52 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/05/2004

Front brakes/brakes are poorly designed/insufficient to handle the task of stopping the truck. Front brake rotor is warped from overheating. The truck vibrates badly when the brakes are applied, and pulls dangerously to the left. Toyota knows all this - it is in their TSB instructing dealers to replace/upgrade Tundra front brakes if still under warranty.

53 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/24/2004

While driving consumer applied the brakes and a loud knocking noise was heard coming from the driver's side wheel. Consumer drove vehicle to dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that calipers and abs brakes were not in compliance with this vehicle. Mechanic replaced the calipers and abs brakes.

54 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/12/2004

Recurring brake vibration problems with 2002 Toyota Tundra access cab v8. Calipers and rotors were replaced under a service bulletin, but problem comes back.

55 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/09/2004

Manufacturer refuses to service faulty brake system while under warranty - 2002 Toyota Tundra 2/03-I took my 2002 Toyota Tundra to a dealership in scottsdale, az (right Toyota) with concern over brake pulsation. The mileage on my vehicle was 32,000 miles. The dealer informed me that my truck was due for a 30,000 mile service interval and checking brakes was normal procedure. I received an invoice noting my front brakes were 90% worn & rear brakes were 40% worn. The dealership offered to replace the front pads for $400. I declined and had my brakes serviced elsewhere 1/13/04-I took my truck to a second dealership in phoenix, az (camelback Toyota) for the 60,000 mile service interval. The dealer performed the service and in the process of checking the brakes noted the entire brake system should have been replaced due to two technical service bulletins (#br004-02; #br003-02) the condition of the rotors and drums were warped, with excessive wear. The dealer wanted to replace the brake system. They said that the required service should have been performed under warranty with the tsbs. The mileage limit on those tsbs was 3 years or 36,000 miles. Since I was over the mileage requirement, yet had originally brought my truck in for this exact problem prior to 36,000 miles Toyota offered to cover the parts if I paid the $1,100. 00 in labor. I refused because this problem was alerted to Toyota prior to 36,000 and was mis diagnosed as worn pads I called Toyotas corporate services number at 800-331-4331 with all the details of this case. They have refused assistance. Toyotas internal reference number for this is 200401090758. I have documentation (the 30kmile service invoice) that notes I had brake issues prior to the expiration of the TSB warranty covering the brakes. It has been provided to camelback Toyota, and the factory is aware of the issue, yet they still refuse to honor their own policy for replacing a brake system that is unsafe.

56 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/01/2004

Shaking when brakes are applied and dealer refuses to correct the problem under warraznty, even though the first identical problem was supposedly fixed while the vehicle was under warranty.

57 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/12/2003

Brake system - we purchased our 2003 Tundra new in 2003. It didn't take long to experience a pad and rotor problem, but my wife has mostly freeway driven the truck about 90 miles per day. She seldom speeds and has a perfect track record to show for it. When I would drive the Tundra, I almost always noticed a braking hop (in the pedal). Unfortunately, she has a tendency to defer maintenance. For the most part, we have put the Tundra in the shop for new rotors or new pads(oem) alternately approx. Every 1500 miles. John elway Toyota says they can check to see if there's anything they can do . . . Nothing yet. Toyota knows they have a problem with the downgraded braking system on these vehicles. I don't know , but suspect, a completely new, upgraded brake system, including, but not limited to rotors, pads, drums, bearings and calipers be installed. Should I just pay the $2 GS?.

58 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/19/2003

There has been a consistent problem with the front brakes in my 2000 Toyota Tundra. They go out approximately every 20,000-25,000 miles and they also get mushy for no discernible reason. There has been a technical service bulletin issued on this problem stating that there is a design problem dictating the replacement of the entire front brake assembly including the calipers back plate etc. The total for this work is over $1100. 00. My mechanic stated that if it were an american car this would have been recalled and the work done at the auto companies expense. . . I purchased this truck new and the expense of replacing the brakes so often is a financial burden to me and I definitely cannot afford $1100. 00 to have the brakes replaced. They should have been done right in the first place. Is there anything that can be done about this? thank you, mike casto.

59 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/01/2003

I have a horrible vibration problem when braking. This is caused by Toyota releasing brake calipers that are too small. I have had my brake pads replaced several times, my rotors replaced, and there the problem will go away for about a week or two. Then the problem comes right back. Technicians have suggested that I replace the calipers for larger calipers. This issue is caused by Toyota's design flaw, not my use of the truck. Toyota should recal the brake calipers for 2000 Tundras. They obviously know there is a problem as they have released several tsbs regarding this and they fixed the problem on the 2001 model. It's rediculous that you have to wait for someone to get injured before Toyota will act on this. Other complaint numbers logged regarding this are. . . 566414 722135* 725801* 733474 739412 741099 742504 747783 747799 747802 747812 747815 747856 747859 747957 748143 748274 749042 749623 750085 751434 751551 751920 752164 752286 752739 752954 753085 753123 753140 753149 753155 753161 758565 761583 761833 763426 764214 764502 764958 767217 767230 767230 767332 767551 767755 767802 768683 785848 876163 877876 878199 879056 889900 890452 891102 894413 895595 898132 8001404 8001405 8004531 8012641 8015166 8015336 8015783 8019793 8020132 8023285 8023731 9003696 9005100 10008294 10008537 10008997 10014041 10016493 10017735 10018348 10018539 10018678 10020562. 60 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/24/2003

Vehicle vibrates when brakes are applied at freeway speeds. I have taken the vehicle to two dealerships, six different times and problem is still there. The following has been replaced several times. Rotors, calipers, bearings, rear drums and brake pads. The rotors have been replaced twice because they warped in two weeks time. Last dealer told me that their tech. Could not find what the problem was and that someone from Toyota would have to come test drive with me. I am concerned that the vibration will become a safety issue.

61 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/19/2003

I have a severe vibration in the vehicle when braking from 30 mph or higher. I had the brakes replaced and rotors resurfaced. The vibration reappears within a matter of days. An ase mechanic did all the work and used original Toyota parts. The last time I took the vehicle for repair, I was advised that my calipers were the culprit and that it would cost nearly $1,000 to replace them. I took the vehicle to my dealer for warranty service on this item since the truck had under 60,000 miles. The dealer stated that the warranty had expired and that I would need to pay for complete system replacement. I have never owned a vehicle where the brake system needed replacement with 50,000 miles. My research has revealed many other people with the same problem. I believe this to be a major safety concern that needs to be addressed before someone is seriously injured or killed due to brake failure.

62 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/12/2003

Letter to Toyota: we just had our daughter's 2000 Tundra in for brake service at the dealer. The brakes have a vibration and are in need of replacement. The dealer has said that Toyota would replace the brakes 1) we live in a mountainous region (we do) and 2) the truck has less than 36,000 miles (55,700). Dealer wanted $2000+ for updated front calipers and wheel bearings. Ouch! our dealer also said that Toyota has acknowleged that the brakes on these vehicles were under-designed for mountain driving. My daughter has experienced a severe shaking problem when applying the brakes. To make matters worse, my daughter is an avid snowboarder and regularly travels over mountain passes in winter to ski areas. We are scared to death to have her drive this truck anymore. Clearly this is not a warranty issue but is a design problem and should be repaired by Toyota regardless of mileage. Handling your mistake in this manner is not acceptable to those of us who purchased your vehicle in good faith in fact, we have purchase 3 Toyotas in the past four years and I can assure you, this is our last. Weak customer support! response: for further clarification, a TSB is a how-to guide for Toyota dealerships that explains repair procedures, required tools, etc. ; no funding is attached to tsbs; that is, the issuance of a TSB does not mean that Toyota funds the cost of the performance of the repair or procedure described in the TSB. We regret that that you remain dissatisfied with Toyota's position. Please accept our apologies for this situation and for any inconvenience you may have been caused; your comments will remain on file at our national headquarters. As you have been made aware, the responsibility for repair costs remains with the owner of the vehicle once the warranty has expired. As Toyota has provided its final position in this matter, there is no further action to be taken by Toyota. How's that for a canned reply???.

63 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/28/2003

I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra with only 29,900 miles. I have experienced severe vibration upon braking. Braking distance has increased tremendously. I have become aware that this premature wear on the braking system is common with this vehicle and believe that a recall should be implemented in order to replace the brake system at no charge to the consumer.

64 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/05/2003

Brakes make entire vehicle shudder strongly if used in mountainous regions where higher use rates cause the system to over heat. Toyota of easily claims that as a TSB only, they are not required to do out-of-warranty repairs. I noticed the problems within warranty but did not make a report to my dealer. I asked if they would sell me the parts at cost. No. I emailed Toyota national customer service and asked the same question. No response. I feel like this is a safety defect that should be a recall not a TSB. If there was not an engineering flaw, why do they have new calipers and backing plates for the TSB? they should at least provide these parts at cost to out-of-warranty consumers, rather than at their inflated list price of nearly $1,000 (parts only).

65 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/09/2003

Improper front brake caliper size, which causes warping of the front brake disc ,and subsequent serious steering wheel vibration of my 2002 Toyota Tundra. Toyota is declining to issue an official recall of the defective brake components, and dealers have been uncooperative in fixing this problem. I hope no one has to be injured for Toyota to take this seriously.

66 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/24/2003

I have a 2001 Toyota Tundra. I feel that the braking system is not what it should be. I have had the rotors turned and new brake shoes put on, but I am still experiencing a bad shake in the brakes.

67 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/11/2003

I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra. From day one the brakes have had a brake vibration problem. I have had my truck worked on five times and the problem has not been corrected. Looking on the internet I found this is a design problem with this model of truck and a recall is in order. The brake calipers are undersized. It feels like the rotors are warped but this is not the problem. Please advise me on what options I have. I do not know if this design flaw has caused complete failures resulting in crashes.

68 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/01/2003

The contact stated there was vibration in the front brakes. The dealership found TSB 10003954 concerning the front brakes. The dealership replaced the calipers, front pads, back plates, lines, wheel bearings, and rear brake drums. They have been replaced multiple times at an independent mechanic. The root cause of the brake vibration was not known at this time. Updated 1/19/2006 -.

69 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/01/2003

I have a 2003 Tundra and the brakes vibrate when applied. This is a safety issue especially in snow slush and rain. I refuse to pay $2,000 for a manufacturing defect. I also see it affects many other owners. Hopefully I don't get hurt!.

70 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/20/2002

Vehicle purchased 4/22/2002. All of the pulsating, vibration while braking downhill (as described by so many in the preceding 21 complaints under "component" service brakes. Hydraulic), occurred 8/20. 2002-warranty week. , 5/1, 2003-more warranty work, finally on 1/5/2006 went to napa auto repair and finally paid for a sensible analysis of the problem and so far a good braking experience. Current mileage is 35,800 miles!! I hope that somewhere in this complaint I will be able to share the reasoned analysis by napa regarding unsized front pads before I run out of space: larger pads for sequoia installed. Sequoia has 4 wheel disc brakes-curb wt. 5280. Tundra-curb wt. 4518. Tundra rear brakes-drum. Smaller pads in front than sequoia. Initial problems seemingly develop when rear drum shoes wear down unevenly thereby putting more wear on small front discs. No "failures" or "deaths or "injuries" to report--(sorry) but only because most of us slow down before the inevitable occurs! warranty work on the two described occasions is listed as:"f. Disc 1-sd gnd comb:opposite side rear brake drum (one side) r&r opposite side" in may, 2003 at 11,611 mi. : "replaced calipers per TSB, resurfaced front rotors, rear brake drum r&r, strut set (2) parking brake. Replaced rear brake drums". I hope that my experience will generate some manufacturer recognition and admission to their problem. Thank you, I. L. Turner.
