The consumer was driving in a parking lot when the driver's side airbag deployed. There was no cause for the airbag to deploy. There was no warning. This occurred on October 2, 2005. The consumer sustained minor pain, cuts, and bruises. The vehicle has not been inspected yet.

I was involved in a automobile crash when another vehicle pulled out in front of me. I was the only person in my car at the time of the crash. I was traveling the posted speed limit and the other driver received a citation and was at fault. I was driving a 2003 vw Passat. The car had extensive front end damage mostly to the drivers side. The car was considered a total insurance loss by the other drives insurance company. The passenger side air bag deployed but the drivers side airbag did not. Since the damage to the front end of the car was extensive both air bags should have deployed. I received minor injuries because of the crash, but if I had been traveling at a higher rate of speed my injuries may have been much worse.

Dtl: lease a 2004 Volkswagen Passat, had a high speed (40 mph) collision. Only the passenger side air bag deployed. No warring lights or failures with the air bags before. Two other vehicle involved but they fled seen.
1. Early on braking (intermittent) and now always at engine startup
2. The abs brake comes on solid, the brake light flashes, and three beeps on engine startup. This indicates that the abs braking system has failed. And indeed I currently have no abs, although the brakes work, and the car cannot pass DC inspection because of the warining lights on the dashboard. 3. I have attempted to diagnose the problem by running the vag-com diagnostics on it. Vag-com cannot communicate with the abs control module which indicates the abs control module must be replaced. I am currently in pursuit of a used replacement part or a rebuild of the current module due to the high price of this part from vw and the fact that it has not been recalled. I have also submitted a complaint to vw of America.

2003 Volkswagen Passat station wagon, VIN no. Wvwwh63b53e089719; hile driving in greensboro nc near the intersection of elm, mcgee and gorrell streets I misjudged a curve and scraped the right side wheels against a curb. Both tires sustained sidewall damage. There was no contact with the body or undercarraige of the car. The two right side wheels sustained minor cosmetic damage only and the impact was insufficient to affect the alignment of the automobile. The automobile continued forward through the curve and there was no loss of control from the impact. However, upon contact with the curb the right side curtain and side impact airbags fired unnecessarily. But for the firing of the airbags this would have been a minor event with only tire damage to be repaired. Fortunately, the passenger seat was unoccupied or the occupant could have been injured. I have photographs of the tires and wheels. I believe the autmobile contains a significant defect causing the side airbag system to deploy when not needed for occupant protection (ie - in the absence of any contact with the structure of the car), and in circumstances part of ordinary driving - the impact with the curb was less than that experienced with some potholes. Thus far, vw has refused to take any responsibility for correction of this defect. The automobile has not yet been repaied, and presumably, event data is still stored in the control module.
2000 vw Passat wagon. My wife was driving on the highway (70 mph) when her passenger side air bag deployed without any impact, bump or incident which should have caused deployment. The driver's side air bag then deployed about 1 minute later while she was still in motion. Preliminary investigation showed an electrical short/meltdown in the center console wiring. Futher investiagtion impending. Thankfully the front air bag did not deploy at that rate of speed and a full fledged fire did not develop.

Front driver side wheel hit a pothole while turning right, which flattened the tire. All driver side airbags as well as side curtain airbags deployed. Sensors appeared to be overly sensitive as there was no impending roll over or collision.

I have a 2003 Passat sedan. The driver side airbag and driver side curtain airbag deployed when the car slid to a stop while turning in an icy parking lot. There was a slight impact at about 5 mph when the the car hit a snow covered concrete parking block at about the jack point near the rear driver-side wheel. Nobody was injured when the airbags deployed. There was no damage done to the car - except to the interior as a result of the airbags being deployed. It will cost $3600 to re-install the two airbags and a lot of other parts. That is ridiculous for a 5 mph impact that caused no damage! I am hoping this will be seen as a defective airbag depolyment and covered under the warranty. If not, vw needs to improve their airbag engineering before I'd consider buying another Volkswagen.
While driving at 35 mph driver side side impact air bag deployed. The vehicle was not involved in a crash. The consumer contacted the manufacturer.
While the vehicle was parked with the engine off, the side airbags deployed. Dealer notified.
As consumer entered the parking lot, the vehicle all of a sudden accelerated, consumer had no control over the vehicle and subsequently crashed through some large boulders and into a ditch, the side airbags deployed, however the front air bags did not, consumer suffered injuries. Mr.
Airbag fault indicator stays illuminated. Dealer indicates that the passenger side, side-airbag sensor is bad. Vehicle has never been in an accident. Normal wear and tear. Only routine maintenance performed, with the execption of passenger side door trim replaced after adhesion failed. The radio has poor fm reception and no am reception. I only include this information because another consumer complaint (odi 840263) has indicated similar symptoms.

At 70 mph side air bags went off. Car filled with smoke swerved off road. Consumer contacted Volkswagen which was looking into the problem. The manufacturer was unwilling neither to investigate the cause nor to fix the deployed air bag.
The r/f air bag deployed while driving, the air bag deployed due to an underside impact, there was no damage to the side impact beam or anywhere on the structural frame. Nlm.
Vehicle was involved in a side impact collision. Left side airbag made contact with "left center pillar post" which ruptured airbag, releasing gasses into vehicle. Consumer has experienced vision problems after this incident.
Right front seat side air bag deployed when consumer hit a pothole, damage to right wheel and tire, vehicle needed an alignment, claim 13-7212-517.
Passenger side air bag cover is not fitted correctly. The dealer attemped to install a new cover. Also there was anti-freeze leakage all over the engine two months after purchase of vehicle. Anti freeze had hardened. Dealer said that the rubber hose had failed under normal driving coditions. Dealership replaced the hose on 6-16-99. Consumer stated the airbag was replaced by dealer on June 16, 1999 however the airbag was again not fitted correctly and popped up and therefore it was not secure, also the radio does not work properly on the am band, there is interference.
Consumer was involved in an rearend collision traveling about 15 mph and both driver's and passenger's side air bags deployed, resulting in injuries to the driver. Consumer also states that the front end has little or no damage.
