The steering wheel controls stopped working one day, along with the horn. Several days later, the airbag warning light came on, and the display shows "airbag fault" every time I start the car. I purchased an extended warranty for this car, and vw refuses to cover the repair. My local dealership diagnosed the problem to be a faulty clock spring.

During mild acceleration the aigbag warning light came on for the passenger side airbag, the seat was unoccupied at the time. The dealer unplugged and reconnected the light and reset the waning light. He then ordered a new wiring harness pn 3c0971366de which was installed on 11/26/2014. This part is connected to a part repaired under recall 97u3 pn 5k0998582 on 01/14/2011. I do not trust the air bag system in this car and think there is reason for an investigation. The explanation of the problem was inadequate and other complaints on the internet indicate an on going problem. I was told the probable problem was salt and corrosion but this is not the case. I have the old wiring harness and it is in mint condition. I think the most likely problem is poor contact mating. (the part is available for your inspection if you would like. ) please add this vehicle to your on going investigation of similar Passat's and jetta's.

Electrical problems from day one - constantly a new light on that never stayed on. Driver's airbag issue that vw says is an electrical problem under the driver's seat - a few hundred dollars to fix a few months ago, the check engine light came on and vw charged us to run a diagnostic test that came back with 12 failure codes, the two most severe being intake runner motor and high pressure pump. Then, not long after, the car literally shut down on the highway and we could hardly get to the side of the road (mind you no prior warning lights were present). The only one that came on for a split second was the epc (electronic power control) light before the car shut off. The vehicle had to be towed to vw dealer who after investigating the problem, said that the engine was shot. And, I almost forgot to mention that the air hasn't worked for 2 summers. Vw claims that this is because a bad compressor was put in the Passats. $1800 to fix. These issues are completely unacceptable and we don't think any of the above problems should be our responsibility to pay. Vw needs to step up and take responsiblity for their faulty engineering.
Air bag warning light came on in our 2002 vw Passat v6 with 70,040 miles. Our repair shop discovered that the seat belt assembly that receives the buckle was not registering the buckle being fastened. We replaced the part #b0858471kfcn to restore the airbag to operation. We were told that the air bag would not inflate while driving with this defective seat belt assembly. We have notified Volkswagen of the problem and asked them to cover the $356. 35 repair cost.
A/c was not cooling as normal then the a/c was not cooling at all. The day the a/c system failed I was driving on the highway at the speed of 70 miles per hour and it was raining heavily. All windows to the vehicle fogged to the point where I had no visibility. I pulled over to the emergency lane. I had to wait for the storm to pass to open my windows and be able to see through all windows. I drove the car home and made an appointment with a vw service shop the next day. The shop checked the a/c system for refrigerant and found that it was contaminated. They vacuum/drained the system, refilled it with new refrigerant, and replaced the temperature sensor for the a/c system. The a/c was working as normal for two months then without warning my a/c system was not cooling at all. I took it back the next day to vw service. They found that the a/c compressor shaft was seized to the compressor housing. To repair it they had to replace the compressor, expansion valve, and condenser. They also cleaned to a/c lines, vacuumed the system and refilled it with refrigerant after putting all the parts together. I was without a vehicle for a week. Till this day my a/c system is not working properly. For example, I drive the car one day, the a/c works and normal, and the next day it does not cool at all. It works at random times. To add, the same time my a/c was broken my air bag warning light came on. Vw checked it and found that the front passenger side igniter had too much resistance. To fix it they removed the front passenger seat and bypassed the front passenger side airbag plug. Then they checked the seat harness and reinstalled the seat. My air bag warning light is on again. Moreover, the sunvisors lights didn't work, shift knob was corroded, the rubber seal to the satellite antenna rotted away, and both tail lights on the interior started to burn and look melted. All was replaced under warranty. Good for that because I couldn't have been able to pay for all the repair costs.
Following routine maintenance of my vehicle, (tune-up, including replacement of spark plugs and ignition harnesses) my repair shop mechanic reported that the airbag warning light came on and stayed on. He said he was unable to turn it off. I then took the vehicle to a factory-authorized vw dealer and was told the problem was caused by low voltage to the airbag unit, that the battery tested low at 12. 04 volts and they could not reset the code without replacing the battery. I approved new battery purchase, but dealer was unable to make warning light go out, despite recoding the controller . Dealer claimed further testing revealed airbag unit controller had failed and would require replacement at parts cost of $798. 00. I declined to pay that amount. In reply to my question, service rep said he was unable to confirm that airbag(s) would deploy in case of an accident. Since they I have driven vehicle for about one month, and each time I start vehicle a warning sounds, the "airbag failure" notice comes up on the dashboard and the airbag warning signal stays on constantly. I telephoned vw customer service to complain and was told there was no recall on this problem and that since vehicle was nearly 6 years old and out of warranty I would need to assume cost of repair/unit replacement. I said I thought this was a safety failure with vehicle becoming out of compliance with federal safety requirements through no fault or malpractice of the owner (myself) and that vw should assume cost of repairs. Customer service rep said they would look into it and reply. So far no response. Vehicle continues to display airbag warning light.

2006 vw Passat 2. 0t airbag failure. Two previous airbag fault warning lights, dealer simply reset. On third failure light warning, I was advised the passenger seat airbag system was broken. Vw of America advised me to "just drive" with the warning light on and that everything was ok!.
2001 Volkswagen Passat low mileage of 21,000 miles. Normally garaged and maintained according to schedule. After rain, found an inch of water in rear passenger floor. Transmission non-functional, air bag warning light and other warning lights on. Dealer said the pollen filter seal was no good and that water leaked in and destroyed the transmission control unit which is located in the floor behind the passenger seat. Cost of repair in excess of $3,100. Vw refuses to compensate in any way because warranty was only for two years. Transmission and power train are covered for 5 years, but vw says the failure was due to "outside influence". I have read many accounts on the internet from many angry owners of similar problems where leaks from this seal have caused catastrophic repairs. The service manager at the vw dealer told me that checking the pollen filter seal is not part of any regular maintenance and that in order to check it, you'd need to disassemble quite a few things in the engine compartment. When I asked him how an owner could possibly know if the seal needed replacement and he replied "you found out how". I am clearly not alone in having experienced a failure from a part that is not in any way maintainable (the pollen filter seal) and that has caused major damage to the car. I feel this is a consumer issue and that this is a design defect in the Passat that vw should compensate owners for. There is no way for an owner to be able to avoid this situation -- it is not a matter of maintenance. It got to do with the Passat leaking water and the location of an extremely expensive component in the rear passenger floor, the area where any water that leaks migrates to. If this failure had occurred during driving, I might have had an accident.

While driving the air bag warning light continuously illuminated on the dashboard. As a result, air bags became inoperative, and wouldn't deploy when needed. Dealership inspected vehyicle at least 10 times, and lately dealer charged to the consumer every time vehicle had a problem.

Consumer states that the airbag warning light keeps illuminating. Cause is unknown. Please provide any further information.
The latch failed on the driver side safety belt. While braking, the latching device above driver's left shoulder failed causing driver to hit their head on the top of the steering wheel. This has in turn caused repeated failure of the spiral spring in the driver's side air bag system - the warning light continues to activate on an irregular basis.

Air bag warning light stayed illuminated while driving. This was caused by a bad sensor that rendered the air bags inoperative.
Consumer stated the air bag warning light came on twice, the second time required the replacement of the spiral spring assembly and adapter harness.
