Chevrolet S10 owners have reported 6 problems related to hatchback/liftgate support device (under the structure category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2003 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 12/03/2009

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet S10. The galvanized steel tailgate support cables that retain the tailgate in the full open (horizontal) position corroded, and then fractured. He contacted the dealer in reference to NHTSA action number rq04012(structure:body:hatchback/liftgate:support device ). He has been informed that the vehicle was not eligible for a free remedy because the sonoma and s-10 vehicles differ from c/k models in several ways: the vehicle height is lower; the tailgate displacement (drop) when not supported by the cables is smaller and the tailgate comes to rest at a less severe tip angle when not supported by the cables; the tailgate mass is smaller; and the size, payload, and usage characteristics are less demanding than c/k model vehicles. He was in the process of having the vehicle repaired. Despite the contrary, the differences have not been substantiated because the failure of this component with the S10 model has been commonly reported to gm. The failure and current mileages were 96000.

3 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2003 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 09/25/2005

Went to open the tailgate of my 2003 Chevrolet s-10 pick-up, and both tailgate support cables broke. No injuries and no damage. Cost $10. 00 each for the cables, but they need to be riveted to the bracket on the tailgate guide. I previously owned a 1994 Chevrolet s-10 pick-up with the same problem. I replaced the cables twice on that truck by welding the rivet.

4 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2000 Chevrolet S10

5 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2001 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 11/27/2004

Hauling my 1935 Chevrolet engine block and unloading it from my 2001 s-10 pickup. The tailgate cables on both side separated dropping the gate to the rear bmper and in the process tipped the engine block into my lap bruising both of my legs badly. My Chevrolet dealer wouldnot replace them without full charge for labor & parts in spite of the same (or similar) cables on the big trucks. I have not replaced them as of yet as I still think they should have been recalled.

6 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2000 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 11/06/2004

I own a 2000 s-10 pickup I had the tailgate open and I sat on it and the tailgate straps broke and I feel to the ground I already have back problems and when I fell I hurt my back and had to have treatment done on my back by my chiropractor. My husband called the chevy company and told them that the straps broke and asked if there was a recall on them they said yes but not on the s-10 only on the sierras and silverados. They would do nothing to solve this problem. So I went into the recall site and it said they had 42 complaints on the s-10 and sonomas on the 2000 year I don't understand why nothing is being done to fix these if they have had this many complaints I have talked to 2 other people that have this same problem they said they just never took the time to file a complaint. So how many others are there out there like this ? I feel very strongly that they should be responsable for fixing this. Thank you beverly ustaszewski.
