Gm special policy 06020 tailgate support cable replacement. I own a vehicle in the years covered under this recall. Go Chevrolet in denver colorado refused to fix this as they stated I did not qualify. In short another dealership was willing and is going to fix the issue for free under the recall. My complaint is that go Chevrolet management and service technicians are not trained or not willing to schedule the appointment to fix a defective part as they are worried they would have to pay for it. I have also filed a complaint with the dealership. Sincerely, pat.

Tailgate cable snapped while tailgate was down. Closer inspection reveals corrosion inside the cable. No unusual weight was placed on tailgate. I believe this issue which was recalled in the silverado line should also be recalled in the s-10 line.

Tailgate cable broke. It appears to be rusted although undetectable through plastic covering. How can I trust the integrity of the cable to know when to replace it?.

A rusted tailgate cable on a 1999 s-10 zr2 Chevrolet truck broken. You cannot replace just the cable. You have to get a latch cable assembly which is very expensive. I think there should be a recall. The right size is broken and the left side is close to breaking. It is also a very hard to find the correct part.

Tailgate cable broke. Cable was rusted.
2002 Chevrolet s-10 tailgate cable was defective. One of them broke without warning. Upon inspection the other cable was faulty and likely to break also. Since I was standing on the tailgate at the time, I was lucky to avoid injury when the cable broke.
I bought a 1999 Chevrolet S10 pickup ,and was in the process of replacing a broken tailgate cable, when I came across a recall for 2000-2004 S10 pickups with a similar problem. From the sounds of it the problem with my S10 was consistent with the description of the recall with the cable rusting through.
The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet S10. While standing on the tailgate, the cables failed that hold the right side of the tailgate. The cables were rusted and the left side cables were replaced a few months prior to the failure. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 95,000 and current mileage was 110,000. *updated 12/12/07 updated 12/12/07.
Tailgate cable broke while sitting on the tailgate (parked).
While deer hunting in maine in Nov 06 I was taking the deer off the roof of my cap when the cables both broke and sent me flying to the ground. I was very lucky and only twisted my back a little but it hurt. When I looked at the cables they were both rusted completely. I have owned 3 blazers and their system for the tailgate was great. Never a problem. General motors should repair this for all of us S10 drivers. Right now I have parachute cord holding up my tailgate.
Tail gate hinges rusting out, and is starting to crack on the frame. Just don't want it to fall off on the road.

I was unloading some limbs and brush into a brush pile from the back of my 2002 Chevrolet s-10 truck when both tailgate cables snapped and I fell into the pile. I weigh 200 pounds and the limbs I was unloading weighed about 20 pounds. I was not injured and there appears to be no damage to the tailgate itself. I was looking online to order new parts when I found about a hundred similar complaints, some with injuries, and still no recall. I became angry when I found out gm knows about this problem and has ignored their customers' safety. Also, the cables are riveted in which means you have to replace the entire assembly which is $60. 00 for one side therefore total cost is around $120. 00.
I was loading a storage trunk onto the bed of my 2002 S10 when both tailgate support cables snapped and dropped the trunk off of the rear of the truck. Luckily I was not standing behind it. I am aware of the recall on tailgate straps for full size Chevrolet trucks, and would like to see the recall expanded to my model truck also so I can get it fixed. I use the truck frequently to carry cargo.
Tailgate cable broke with less than 75 lbs (my 7yr old daughter) sitting on tailgate. Cables appeared to be corroded due to a coating on them that allowed moisture to come in contact with cable.
The cable that retains the tailgate has broken. It is encased in a vinyl covering that hides the rust that appears to have caused the failure. The cable has rusted out in the middle causing the tailgate to be unstable when loading/unloading. When unloading the truck, the unstable tailgate caused a fall. The vinyl casing prevents visual inspection for rust, and probably leads to rust since it retains moisture. The design and installation of the cables prevents ready replacement as the entire latch must be removed/replaced.
: the contact stated while lowering the tailgate, it was noticed the passenger side cable fractured. The vehicle has not been seen by a mechanic.

The straps that hold the tail gate in position broke that hold the tailgate in a level position. One broke first and I called gm to see if there was a recall on my truck and was informed no they were thinking about extending it. My son was almost hurt when this happened.
Both cables on my 1998 chevy s-10 pick-up have snapped. My dog was using a ramp that rested on the tailgate when it happened. It caused the ramp to fall a few inches luckily the dog was uninjured however he is very frightened to use the ramp now. He weighs over 150s so I can't lift him. I went to the local auto parts store to get new cable when I was told about the recall on other similar vehicles. I have put off repairing this in anticipation of a recall.

: the contact stated the tailgate cable corroded and fractured in half. There was an NHTSA recall, # 04v129000, regarding the structure: body: tailgate: hinge and attachments. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN. Updated 08/25/06.
Tailgate cable broke on r/s and cable is ready to break on the l/s. I just purchased new ones after I was told by a parts man at faulkner Chevrolet bethlehem PA that the s-10's are not on a recall to have these cables/latches replaced. My cost for the parts was $98. 83.
1. No special events leading to failure 2. Both tailgate cables rusted, broke in half while lowering gate, minor bruising to driver and scratches on tailgate finish. 3. Cables apparently cannot be replaced, attachment to tailgate latch assembly seems to be permanent.
2001 chevy s-10 ext. Cab 4x4 p/u truck. Cable holding up tailgate rusted through, leading to an unsafe tailgate on my pick-up truck. Nothing was done to correct it.
: the contact stated that while retrieving items from the back of the vehicle the tailgate cables snapped off twice causing minor injuries to the contact. The dealers offered to replace the cables at cost and acknowledged that there was a recall for the full size trucks but not the S10. No service or repairs have been made to the vehicle.
Tailgate cables failed due to internal rusting. Failure occurred while I was standing on the tailgate, I suffered skin abrasions, bruises and a sprained ankle. Tailgate suffered superficial paint damage and bowing in the middle. Parts must be replaced, replacement cables cannot be obtained without also purchasing and installing new latch brackets.
2002 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck. 37,179 miles on vehicle. Tailgate support cable broke with one person sitting on the tailgate. Plastic coating ripped away revealing that the steel cable was very rusted.
(1) I own an 02 s-10 sports side pickup which I rarely use the tail gate. (2) my 250 lb 6'3" father put the tailgate down, sat on it, and the tailgate support cables snapped. He didn't jump, hop, or sit down excessively hard and they broke. (3) upon further inspection of the tailgate it wasn't creased so I was okay. My uncle (who works for a dealership) said there was a recall on the full sizes and he would check for mine. He calls back no recall but the cables are $10 a piece. I'm thinking ok no problem. The next day he said those cables were discontinued and the new ones/ new assembly cost $35 a piece. So I'm going from a $20 fix to $70. That's insane. Why should they make more money off me from their mistake?.
Both tailgate cables for 2001 chevy S10 broke.
: the contact stated while opening the tailgate, the passenger side cable was fractured. The dealership determined the cable needed to be replaced. Updated 07/03/06.
When opening the tailgate on my truck both cables broke in the middle due to corrosion. This is the same problem gm has on their larger trucks which have been recalled.
In June 2006 I was loading a small table and chair set into the bed of my 2000 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck. I was in the bed of the truck, walked from the cab to the back and stepped onto the tailgate. I reached down to pick up a small, light-weight chair and both tailgate cables snapped letting the tailgate drop down quite unexpectedly. I jumped back to avoid injury to myself. The tailgate was slightly damaged. I'm told by my local dealership, holler Chevrolet in winter park, florida there is no recall or special bulletin issued for my truck concerning the cables. There are recalls for other models in the same and other years. If the cables on all models general motors pickup trucks are the same, I believe all models should be recalled for repair. I have an appointment at holler Chevrolet December 7, 2006 to have this repair done at a cost to me of $75. If or when there is a recall, I believe I should be reimbursed this amount of money.
Both cables securing the tail gate on my 2002 Chevrolet s-10 broke. While there was no damage there could have been if my wife had not been alert and prevented the tailgate from dropping. I understand that there is current a product safety memo for the 1999-2000 chev silverado and GMC sierra.
(1) factory installed non stainless steel tailgate cables. (2) tailgate cables rusted into and snapped causing tailgate to suddenly drop. (3) nothing has been done yet to correct the problem.
Had 2 large (5 gal) paint cans setting on tailgate (which was down). Walked into bed and picked up another item. When stepping on the tailgate the cables supporting the tailgate snapped and I was thrown to the ground.
: the contact stated the steel tailgate support cables corroded and fractured without warning. The vehicle was not seen by a dealer. There is a NHTSA recall, # 04v129000, regarding the tailgate hinge and attachments. The VIN was not included in the recall.
