Failure Date: 03/26/2006

When my son went to open the rear tailgate of my 2001 s-10 crewcab, both tailgate cables broke at the same time. We were fortunate that he wasn't on the tailgate as he could have easily been injured and damage could have occurred to the tailgate. I didn't realize this might be a problem until after mine broke and I started to do a little research on the internet. It appears this is happening to a lot of s-10 pickup owners. I am currently in the process of getting parts to replace the cables.

While unloading pieces of a cast iron tub, as I slid the tub onto the tail gate of my 2000 S10, one of the tail gate cables failed. The tail gate moved slightly but the other cable was able to take up the rest of the weight. The cable appeared to be very rusty inside. This appears to be similar to an issue remedied on the larger trucks but not dealt with on the smaller size trucks. (the day listed below is an estimate. ).

Failure Date: 02/11/2006

Tailgate support cables on my 2002 Chevrolet s-10 pickup broke while opening and fell onto my foot. Foot was only bruised and I did not seek medical attention. Both of the tailgate cables had corroded and snapped at the same time. This seems to be a common Chevrolet problem, as Chevrolet and GMC full-size pickups have been recalled to replace cables. I replaced the cables for $98. 37. The cables should be recalled and replaced before a serious injury takes place.

49 Tailgate Hinge problem of the 2002 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 02/05/2006

I read with personal interest about the gm recall for full size pickup tailgate cable failures. While I own a 2002 chevy S10 pickup and have experienced the same failed cable due to rust, my truck is not included in the recall. Why? as it is now the tailgate is not usable until they are replaced, walking over the tailgate is sure to lead to failure of the second cable and a fall to the ground.

I was standing on the tailgate of my 2001 chevy S10 zr2 when both the support cables snapped at the same time, sending me falling to the ground. There was no load on the tailgate other than my 195 lbs. There is no excuse for this to have happened on a truck of this year. This could result in serious persona injury for someone with a load on the tailgate.

56 Tailgate Hinge problem of the 2002 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 01/04/2006

Placed about a 200 pound torch on tailgate when lifing into 2002 chevy S10 truck. Tailgate cable broke. Although no injuries or damaged property that day, in the future a 275 pound owner could have been on the tailgate and a broken cable could cause broken bones or lacerations. To correct problem one can not simply replace a $10 cable. Gm has made the vehicle so you have to buy the cable and hinge for $45. This is ridiculous and if these cables have been found to be faulty and recalled in the silverados they should probably also be recalled on the S10s. As of yet the cable has not been replaced-wailting to see if a recall will be issued.

61 Tailgate Hinge problem of the 1998 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 11/15/2005

I have a 1998 chevy s-10 and the left tailgate cable broke. It broke when I opened the tailgate and sat down on it. I did not get hurt but I think a cable needs to be able to hold some weight. I have heard that the cables retain moisture which causes them to rust out and mine was rusted. I left the cable on and it damaged the tailgate by putting a dent in it and cracking the paint. I cut the cable so it would not damage the tailgate any more. My brother told me I could use his cable from his tailgate and I am. I think that it should be recalled as this is a safety problem. I heard they might recall this so I decided to put my input because someone could get hurt. I also bought replacement cables, but there is no way to put them on because gm uses a big rivet. I have heard of other people's cables on their 95-2003 s-10's. Thanks.

62 Tailgate Hinge problem of the 2000 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 11/05/2005

I stepped up onto the tailgate of my 2000 Chevrolet s-10 zr2 and both cables snapped in the middle. I only weigh 150 lbs and they should have not snapped like they did. When I looked at the broken cables, I found that they were rusted on the inside and that is what caused them to fail. Luckily the tailgate was not damaged when it broke when it hit the bumper.

While loading a vanity base and sink into rear of 1997 Chevrolet s-10 pick up, both tail gate cables snapped in half. 69 Tailgate Hinge problem of the 2002 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 09/17/2005

I own a 2002 Chevrolet s-10 pickup. I was helping a friend move some small furniture when at the end of our last run I noticed my tailgate was resting on my bumper. Apparently the tailgate cables snapped. Upon further inspection the site of failure where the cable snapped was rusted through. Now this is a cable that is entirely encased in plastic from the factory and it still managed to rust. I have open and closed my tailgate perhaps two dozen times in the course of three years so this is certainly not a wear issue. . I feel that gm should extend the tailgate recall it has for its full size trucks(which experience the same problem) to include their mid-size s-10 trucks as well.

70 Tailgate Hinge problem of the 1998 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 09/15/2005

I own a 1998 Chevrolet s-10. The cables that hold up the tailgate broke on me while I was loading cargo into the bed. The broken straps has since caused my tailgate to fall off while going down a rough road. The tailgate is now scratched and dented from the initial breaking and from falling off. I have not made any attempt to fix this problem as of yet.
