2 Structure problem of the 1988 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 09/06/2012

I am a detective with the council bluffs iowa police department. There was a fatal incident that occurred in which the adult male victim had the engine running and in park. The carburetor was taken apart and there was a can of carburetor cleaner was on the ground. A single blade of the cooling fan apparently broke off/came off of the fan. The blade cut through the plastic 'protective' housing. The victim was believed to be standing near the front passenger tire or near the battery (passenger-side headlight area). A witness reported hearing high revving of the engine and it was concluded that the victim was doing so manually. The blade was found resting about ten feet away on a stair approximately four feet off the ground. The victim was fatally wounded by a deep cut across the left side of his neck where he lost a significant amount of blood. His wife found him shortly after the incident, medics arrived and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Pictures are available upon request. Thank you.

4 Structure problem of the 2001 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 08/20/2009

I drive a 2001 Chevrolet s-10, that for the most of its life has been in snowy or salty atmospheres. So there is a good amount of rust under the vehicle. A while ago I was driving down the interstate, I hit a bump and heard a pop, and looked in my rearview mirror and there was my spare tire bouncing in the lane I was driving in. Cars swerved around it, I pulled over on the shoulder and got the tire and parts and examined the damage and cause. I have noticed that the only thing holding up that spare tire under my truck was a little cable. Well, just like the spare wheel, the rust got a hold of the cable and the cable rusted through and gave way. I am a professional mechanic, and I could think about how many vehicles there are out there that all that is holding this wheel under the vehicle is a little cable, no "system redundancy" sort of speak. Just like mine did, if the cable breaks, there is no safety device to catch it. Some vehicles are better at securing it than others. My case was a lucky one, its obvious that a tire and wheel bouncing on the interstate could easily cause a wreck or even kill someone. Needless to say my heart dropped when I saw the spare wheel in my rear view mirror. It seems to me there should be better way to secure the tire. Right now my spare tire is just sitting in the bed until I have some time to figure something out, get a new cable system and design a 'system redundancy' like a bar or chain holding it up with the cable, to support it.

6 Structure problem of the 2003 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 11/15/2006

While driving my 2003 chevy S10 the assembly that holds the spare tire underneath of the vehicle disengaged when the cable snapped. The tire became wedged between the road and the rear bumper causing my vehicle to fishtail. No accident occurred despite the tire bouncing across 4 lanes of traffic and down a side street where it came to rest against a curb. The "priority" dealership said this was not covered by the warranty. This is the 3rd case I have heard about this happening in my area.

Tail gate cables on 2 year old s-10 truck failed. Dealer would not cover cost of replacement. Two years later company had a recall for replacement and dealer still would not reimburse cost of replacement. Called gm and followed their instructions to send in receipt for reimbursement but never heard from them, calls not returned. Company and dealer were long on talk, very short on service. This is one of three serious s-10 defects, so far.
