Chevrolet S10 owners have reported 18 problems related to tailgate (under the structure category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Cable straps that hold the tailgate horizontal to the ground when the tailgate is in the down position have rusted through and will no longer hold the tailgate in the horizontal position. There was a recall on this in approximately June of 2006. I received a card in the mail, took the vehicle in to the Chevrolet dealer, and they advised me that parts were not available. This happened twice. I kind of gave up, until I discovered the part failure earlier this year. Unfortunately I have misplaced my card that they sent in the mail. Upon failure of this part, I took my vehicle in to a Chevrolet dealer in September of 2014. They knew about the recall, so ran my VIN # and said my vehicle VIN# was not part of the recall. Perhaps general motors didn't recall enough of the VIN#s to find all of the part failures.

Tailgate cable failure on my 1999 Chevrolet s-10 for the second time in five years, the tailgate cables have snapped on my 1999 s-10. This is particularly distressing, since it happens when loading or unloading the truck, or when someone is sitting or standing on the tailgate, causing property damage to the truck or the person on the tailgate.
Tailgate hinge and cable assembly rusted and failed.
This is in regards to a 1997 Chevrolet s-10 pickup. It's a 4 cylinder, 2 wheel drive. The left tailgate strap broke. The strap is clearly rusted throughout which caused it to snap. I noticed that there is a recall on this type of strap on a GMC truck. This is not a part for the average person to replace since it requires some dismantling of the tailgate. My Chevrolet dealer gave me an estimate of $90 to replace the left side. It would probably be wise to replace both of them. Is Chevrolet aware of this in their trucks and if so are they currently looking at a recall for this defective part? I would appreciate any information that you can provide.

On my 1998 chevy s-10 both of the tailgate cable broke. The cables broke and the wood I was loading slid off and hit my foot it did hurt it, but luckily it was not bad. It also damage my tailgate on my truck. I have see on the internet and from other people about there tailgate cables breaking. I have seen it on 1995, 1998 and 2000 s-10 trucks. I think that gm needs to make replacement cables this very dangerous and if you were loading something it could slid off the tailgate and hurt themselves like I did. Thank you, nathan hooker.
2000 s-10 tailgate cable/latch assembly failure.
The contact states the tailgate cable broke during motion and the tailgate slammed down. This happened on 8-20-05. He was going approx. 40 mph. Contacted the dealer as well as gm, and they told her that this vehicle not included in previous recalls on older year models. She iwasvery concerned because if her husband was to be carrying a heavy load in the truck ,and something fell ou. , there could be a very bad accident. The dealer was willing to fix the tailgate at the consumer's cost.

There has been a persistent problem with the tailgate on this truck from day 1. Driving down the street and for no apparent reason the tailgate pops open. I have had this happen so often that I now use bungee cords to keep the tailgate shut in case the latch fails. I have had dealers twice do warranty work on this, but they haven't really found the problem yet. The latch looks normal, everything seems to line up, but you never know when the tailgate is going to flop open. Usually when I'm pulling a trailer, but often not. . My theory is that the frame and body are so flexible that tolerances open up and pop, the latch no longer holds. Hope you guys have some kind of a handle on this problem. Thanks-- jms.
