Nine problems related to engine exhaust system have been reported for the 1999 Dodge Intrepid. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I have a 99 Dodge Intrepid with 119k miles on it. I just had my inner tie rod bushing replaced, in the last week my car has died twice on the freeway traveling 60mph, and at a stop light where I could not stop because car was shut off completely. I had to step on parking brake to stop the car. This is very scary driving this death trap.
For the past 3 or 4 years now I have been having engine related problems with my car. Recently things got worse. My heat will not work unless the car is moving, grayish spoke coming from the exhaust pipe and overheating. I went to a website that was talking about my type of car and the many engine troubles other people are having. The website claimed that I could receive help with getting my car fix due to the many defects with the engines of these cars. The website described everything my car is doing now.
First, the check engine light came on. I took it to the dealer where I got it from to find out that the egr valve needed to be changed, did this. Then I drove it for 1 week and the check engine light came on again, took it back to the dealer to find out that there is a problem with the crank shaft and that it will be very costly to have it repaired. All of this happened when I was driving it. The car began to shake and I got very scared. I only had the car for 3 months and in the 3 months all of these problems have erupted. I need some justice in getting these problems addressed so that the car can be fixed without cost to me when checking the internet and finding out that this is a major problem with these cars. It is something that Dodge knows that these cars have those problems and they are not honoring helping the owners fix them.
Engine made loud whistling noise then started ticking . Lifted up hood on car to find the valve cover had an hole in it. Oil was shooting out. Took car to shop ,and was told valve shot out and punctured valve cover. When this happens engine would need to be replaced.
On Tuesday November 14, 2006 I was driving along a secondary highway when my 1999 Dodge Intrepid started to buck on me. It sounded like the engine was skipping and unbeknownst to me smoke came out of my exhaust when it bucked . I brought the vehicle to a local computer tune and lube for a diagnostic and they informed me that I would need a new motor in the car to the tune of 6500 dollars. I became angry and limped my car back to the dealership who told me that since I had a warranty I could get the engine fixed the engine is a 2. 7 litre. I was told to bring it to a Dodge dealership who proceeded to break down the engine. They informed me that they had contacted the warranty company and I should forward all maintenance receipts to the company. Now earlier this year in February my car broke down and eventually they said it was the fuel pump. When they were done the checked out my fluids oil and other items and that settled that. I only put 5000 miles on the car between then and now and from what the described you would think I ran the car into the ground. I take pride in my cars and have kept a consistent record of running them for ten years. The warranty company is sending out an inspector but they are going to avoid paying as much as possible. I just bought this car last year and already it's in worse shape than any of my previous cars @ ten years. I would appreciate any advice you can give me as to a possible recourse to this dilemma.
We have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid that began to have exhaust smoke. The mechanic suggested changing oil to havoline 10w-40 max. We did so. The car continued to have a smoking exhaust. We have regularly changed the oil before the 3 thousand mile mark. We had about one thousand miles from the last oil change. We have used regular oil changes and synthetic oil changes in the past. Approximately 130 miles into a trip with the car set in cruise control between 65 and 70 mph, the engine failed. Going up a slight incline, suddenly, the vehicle rpm's shoot up to about 6 thousand, the car lost power and could not be restarted. The incident was on a rather busy highway at the time. The motor had essentially froze, and lost oil as no or little oil was on the oil stick. The car is on a trailer awaiting to go to a local auto shop for repairs. The Dodge Intrepid was a great car to drive, and we had excellent gasoline mileage. The abrupt failure of the engine to perform on a busy highway is a forebearer of potential problems for the 2. 7l engine, and its passengers.
While driving the at 30 mph, smoke started to come out from the exhaust pipe. Following this the vehicle started hesitating to accelerate, jerking forward, then stalled. The vehicle was towed to an engine specialist, who indicated that a rod had been thrown and the engine was destroyed. This may of been caused by a misfiring of a sensor. Prior to this incident the engine was replaced at 65000 miles.
I have had trouble with my car heater is not operating properly serious damage may have already occurred to my engine. The primary symptom is that the car heater, for no reason, does not blow hot air - then it starts working. Looks like my car engine has been overheating and causing sludge to build up in the top half of the engine. Some other symptoms are car starts to burn oil, very light traces of white smoke from exhaust and the engine may seem to run a little rough at idle. Still running but I don't know for how long. . . .
A/cevaporator has gone out in my car. Additionally, the sensor on transmission went out 4 months ago. My mechanic says the exhaust system has rust spots. All people who have looked at the car say these problems shound not be happening on a car with only 48,000 miles.
