Seven problems related to engine noise have been reported for the 1999 Dodge Intrepid. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 50 mph, he heard a thud and a pinging sound coming from the engine, and then the engine shut off without warning. The contact felt that the crank bearing caused the failure. As of may 16, 2008, the dealer had not inspected or repaired the vehicle. The current and failure mileages were 98,000.
I attempted to start my vehicle and it would not start. I noticed a strange noise. I had the vehicle towed to a repair shop. The mechanic told me that the timing chain had broken and ruined the engine.
The 2. 7l engine was making a pinging noise while driving at any speed. Consumer did some research on the website and believed the problem was due to engine sludge build up. Dealer was notified.
A week after having the cam-sensor replaced the oil light came on. We proceeded to take it right back to the mechanic, who discovered the "sludged" engine. We had changed the oil every 3,000 miles since purchasing the vehicle. The engine now makes a sound like someone is hitting the insides with a hammer. It is no longer drivable, and we have been told the only option is to replace the engine. We cannot afford the $7,000 to make the replacement.
Had begun to notice slight pinging sound in engine. Engine seized up on me while driving home at night from appointment - approx 20 miles away from home. Was able to contact my husband and he hauled car home. Called several locations to get info on rebuilding engine for 1999 Dodge Intrepid. Was told by several mechanics that this particular engine is none for seizing up and not to waste my money on buying a new 2. 7 engine. New engine price around $5,000. Not only am I stuck with 9 more payments, but I also have to carry full coverage insurance since the car is financed. Called Dodge customer service and they would not even open a complaint file.
Drove vehicle to closest dealership at time of engine noise. Vehicle was running when taken to dealership. Dealership looked at engine, said there was sludge in engine, said they could clean the sludge out of engine for $360. 00 and that would probably solve noise problem in engine. Dealership supposedly cleaned sludge out of engine, engine then seized. Dealership asked for receipts of engine oil changes which were provided. Dealership supposedly cleaned out sludge from engine. Engine then seized upon being started. Daimlerchrysler refuses to fix engine.
While driving on highway, vehicle completely shutdown without warning, cause unknown. Also, consumes a lot of oil. The vehicle shut down while on the road without warning, but the dealer replaced the diagnostic censor twice and the vehicle continued failing. The engine makes noise due to cam shaft failure.
