Two problems related to funny engine noise have been reported for the 1999 Dodge Intrepid. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The timing chain was getting ready to snap. Took vehicle to the dealer because the engine was knocking and making a funny noise. Dealer stated that if consumer had to drive much further it would snap while driving it. There was oil sludge built up in the engine. This happened on March 15, 2005.
My husband took our kids to get haircuts the car was making a funny sound when he got to the salon he shut the car off and it wouldn't restart. A few people passed by and told him it was the starter. $135 later and a new starter installed, it still won't turn over. Upon speaking with a Dodge mechanic at the dealer, he informed me that the car had "jumped timing" and that since it's a zero tolerance engine, it's quite possible that I have a valve stuck open and the part to fix it costs $2,000 plus labor. He also advised me to call Chrysler as, in his words, a car with 46,000 miles on it should not be having these problems.
