Ptu failure on 2015 Jeep Cherokee.

2 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/28/2026

I have a 2014 Jeep Cherokee trailhawk. The service 4wheel drive light keeps popping u. A recall needs to be put on this year, make and model. Its a known issue that Jeep has not addressed at all.

3 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2026

There have been many documented incidents regarding these transmissions on the 2014 Jeep Cherokee latitude. The transmission are junk in these and have been recalled because of splines and clutches. Please get back to me on this issue.

4 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2026

While traveling at highway speed approximately 70 miles an hour vehicles transmission suddenly failed without warning, aesthetically freezing the transmission on the highway I could not step on the gas and the vehicle would not move. This was not a minor inconvenience or a routine mechanical issue this was based on research and many reported transmission tests of this model year transmission and Chrysler knew about it in 2013 even as engineers were trying to fix the problem and they still released the vehicle design flaw in 2014, particularly the transmissions internal clutch systems. This should’ve been recalled by the us government.

5 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2026

No, vehicle just died on highway.

6 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2026

I was driving my 2014 Jeep latitude, on the interstate in maine and the transmission just died. I barely could merge to the right to get out of the way of traffic going 70mph. There is a transmission recall on these isn't there?.

7 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2026

The vehicle recently showed an error stating "service 4wd" which appears to be a known issue with this model of vehicle. When checking the VIN number, it appears this particular vehicle is supposedly not one that has this issue. However with that being said, it is giving the code that is specifically has this issue. The cost to fix this totals more than $4,000 and is known to Chrysler. This vehicle should be covered under the known issue by the manufacturer.

8 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2025

Ptu is being replaced because the dealership said it is going to leave me without power to the wheels which can be extremely dangerous on interstate. Took my Cherokee in because the whining that I’ve been hearing for at least three years was getting louder. The component has not been inspected by the manufacturer yet but I’m waiting on a replacement part and is currently on back order and I’m without the vehicle for a prolonged period of time.

9 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2025

The ptu has failed in my vehicle. When I bought the vehicle there was a 4x4 light on the dash but I was told that it needed to be just turned off by a Jeep dealership. But I believe it actually was a symtom of the failing ptu. My vehicle sometimes goes into neutral when I try to pull off from a stop sign and then the vehicle kicks itself back into drive. My coolant and transmission temp rises the more I drive it and transmission seems to shift late or hard and sometimes prematurely sometimes it smells like burning electrical.

10 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2025

Transmission is very jerky and have had this problem since I had it with 111,000 miles. I went to a mechanic and was told it was ptu. Was also checking online and not sure why it isn’t covered but I’ve seen everyone has this problem on this Jeep. Really to expensive for me to fix.

11 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2025

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under emissions recall u90; however, the contact stated that while driving at various speeds or while accelerating from a stop, the vehicle violently downshifted. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that a software update was needed. The vehicle was not repaired and was left at the local dealer. The local dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

12 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2025

While driving, the vehicle shifts itself into neutral and goes into a limp mode with no power. Almost caused a serious accident going 70 mph when it shifted itself into neutral.

13 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/29/2025

The Jeep has a drivetrain defect involving the transmission and power transfer unit (ptu) that has existed since purchase and has progressively worsened over the years. From early on, the vehicle intermittently hesitated when accelerating from a complete stop, followed by sudden surging or lunging forward. Symptoms were reported to a Jeep dealership early after purchase while under warranty. Their inspections did not identify a defect at that time. Over time, the condition worsened and became more frequent, including hesitation on takeoff, bucking, and abnormal behavior when maneuvering at low speeds or turning the steering wheel to full lock in parking lot. This occurs unpredictably and creates a dangerous situation when entering intersections, making left turns across traffic, or merging, because the vehicle does not accelerate when expected and then suddenly surges. The Jeep was taken to an independent mechanic. After inspection and a test drive, the mechanic stated the condition was unsafe and suspected a transfer case issue, recommending that the vehicle be taken to an authorized dealership for further evaluation. After this referral, the Jeep dealership was able to reproduce the problem during a test drive and confirmed hesitation on acceleration, transmission shift issues, and ptu malfunction. The dealership documented that the transmission and ptu require replacement. The vehicle had previously received the manufacturer’s required powertrain recall software update. The dealership stated they could attempt another software relearn or update, but no guarantee it would resolve the issue. No warning lights or dashboard messages prior to or during these events. Mopar says that the ptu is on national backorder with no eta. The cost of repair exceeds the value of the vehicle and would be entirely out-of-pocket since the warranty is up, making repair financially impossible. As a result, the owner is left with an unsafe vehicle that cannot be reasonably repaired.

14 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2025

Vehicle has been inspected by 2 different mechanics, both confirming our ptu is failing. This is our sons only vehicle; while he was driving the vehicle to and from work, and going to school sometimes the car will start flashing “esc off” and will stop while he driving. Almost like the car has slammed on its breaks. This has happened while he going 10mph and happened going 40mph, most dangerous time he was driving 65mph on interstate when it locked up and caused him to slide down a exit ramp. Of course this puts not only him at risk of serious harm or death, but the other drivers on the road if his car decides to slam on its breaks and someone hits since this happens out of nowhere. Again, this issue has been confirmed my two separate independent service centers and two separate dates. The vehicle has not been inspected by manufacturer, insurance representatives, or police except for the two separate mechanics we took our vehicle to. 1 week before this issue began the esc off button started flashing which we immediately took it to the repair shop a few days later and was diagnosed with a failing ptu. This car is incredibly dangerous to drive and each time we drive it — it feels like a death sentence.

15 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2025

Unknown when taking off from a stop sign it’s has a delay when hitting the gas also when driving down the road it’s like a jerking or feel like transmission jerking or slipping or something it’s does it every time I drive I.

16 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2025

73000 miles. 2014 Jeep. Mechanic reported ptu problem. VIN is not on list of recall. Car "service 4wheel" dashboard light is on. Auto vibrates when driven.

17 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2025

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that the gear shift indicator lights were illuminated, and the message "service shifter" was displayed. The vehicle was taken to carmax, where the contact was informed that no failure was found; however, the failure persisted. Additionally, while driving at various speeds, the vehicle failed to respond as intended. Upon parking the vehicle in the garage and then starting the vehicle later, the parking brake unintendedly engaged and seized. The vehicle was towed to dependable car care, where it was diagnosed with water intrusion in the parking brake module. The mechanic determined that the parking brake module needed to be replaced, and an electrical connector cleaning was needed. The vehicle was repaired; however, while driving 45 mph, the failure recurred, causing the vehicle to brake hard. The message "brake" was displayed. The vehicle was pulled over into a parking lot and remained in the parking lot. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 118,072.

18 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2025

We have had the vehicle inspected by 2 different mechanics, both confirming our ptu is failing. My wife and I have a toddler and this is our only vehicle; while we’re driving the vehicle to and from work, and going to get groceries sometimes the car will start flashing “esc off” and will stop while we’re driving. Almost like the car has slammed on its breaks. This has happened while we’re going 10mph and happened going 40mph. Of course this puts not only us as risk of serious harm or death, but the other drivers on the road if our car decides to slam on its breaks and someone hits since this happens out of nowhere. 19 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2025

Rear tires locked up in reverse. While in gear they lock up randomly. Car shut off and broke down while driving on expressway and lost control. No accident but could’ve been bad. 4x4 light on says svc. Mechanic says shows signs of new safety recall 02c? talked to Jeep dealership and they weren’t aware of such recall on this model. Need help on who to contact and what to do.

20 Power Train problem

27 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2025

The 4wd system is no longer working. Put in park and tried to shift and now I have an error warning light. 4ws system unavailable. Service required. The ptu seems to be the issue but the open recalls I have found do not cover this issue for my vehicle.

28 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2025

Failed 4wd due to failed ptu or transfer case. Jeep extended a warranty for this but only for two obd codes, if yours fails for any other reason, and there are many, like a bad actuator, you don't get the warranty. From my research this is a widespread issue and requires a recall. This is a very expensive fix if you don't match the exact obd code, but it affects thousands of people.

29 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/08/2025

The vehicle experienced a catastrophic failure of the brand new cv half shaft while driving. Spline shear. Loss of drive function, loss of park function. Our local garage said the vehicle was the correct for make, model, and year for this to be a w47 recall issue. When we searched nthsa with the vehicle VIN, which returned zero open recalls. After researching the w47 recall, we called the manufacturer. They documented our VIN and details of our case in two departments and gave us the reference numbers: #92987492, and #92987905. They told us the next step was to bring it to nthsa a file a complaint report about the VIN not being included in the recall and to include the reference numbers in the complaint form. We have nothing physical to scan or upload. Just those two reference numbers from the manufacturers.

30 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2025

Gear shift dropped out of drive into neutral. Note on dash said to put in park and then back to drive which was done. Same problem occurred a few minutes later. Also occurred to dealer tech advisor twice but has not been duplicated since even after about 150 miles. Dealer says they cannot troubleshoot until transmission fails. This seems to be the identical problem that required a 2019 recall.

31 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2025

Was starting through a stop sign when the car popped and started making a grinding noise. Would not go anywhere. Finally pushed it into a parking lot where it is sitting not. I’m sure it is the ptu. Will Jeep do anything to fix it since this is obviously a problem with more than just my vehicle.

32 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2025

Submission to NHTSA regarding transmission issues in 2014 Jeep Cherokee latitude summary of concerns I purchased a 2014 Jeep Cherokee latitude in November 2024, and the transmission issues began approximately six months later. The vehicle exhibits the following problems: •harsh and delayed shifting •sudden jerks and gear hunting during low-speed driving •severe hesitation from a stop, especially at intersections or in traffic •loss of power under throttle, with unpredictable shifts these issues make the vehicle unsafe for daily driving, particularly in traffic or at intersections where a lack of predictable acceleration increases the risk of accidents. Despite a visit to the midas dealer, where these issues were reproduced and linked to multiple technical service bulletins (tsbs), the problems persist. The transmission's erratic behavior, even after software updates, remains unresolved and poses a significant safety concern for both the driver and others on the road. Resolution sought I respectfully urge the NHTSA •investigate the transmission behavior in the 2014 Jeep Cherokee latitude •consider initiating a full recall or service campaign to address these persistent transmission issues •demand that Jeep implement a permanent solution to ensure the safety and reliability of affected vehicles the ongoing transmission problems in this vehicle, as reported by myself and other owners, necessitate immediate action to prevent potential accidents or injuries. A comprehensive and effective resolution is essential to address this critical safety concern.

33 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/29/2025

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while at a stoplight and attempting to accelerate, the vehicle failed to move. The contact stated that the engine warning light was illuminated, and a message to "check transmission" was displayed. The contact shifted to neutral and pushed the vehicle to the residence. The local dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 68,831.

34 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2025

Nhtsa recall # 19v-447 I do believe it has to do with this recall that states the clutch is getting stuck in the transmission it does say that the recall has been completed but it is obviously doing it again.

35 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2025

I was on my way home from alpharetta from a business meeting and my car started to shake really bad on the front. I thought it might have been something my tire caught. But I just put 4 brand new tires and not one light was on on my dash board there have never been any lights come on my dash board since I've had the vehicle. I drove about 10 more mins and it got worse so I pulled over and parked. I couldn't see anything. I was an hour away from home. The next day after getting my vehicle home. I was told that the ignition coil was catching fire as I was driving it. I also have the video in my phone. The car was literally trying to catch on fire and I was told if I would have kept driving it and not pulled over my car would have went up in flames more than likely. I keep all the maintenance done on it and change the tires and if stuff needs fixing I fix it. But I have never had a car start to catch fire as I'm driving it. I have video proof that's what it was doing while the car was running and noone messed with it . This car year make and model shouldn't even be on the market. I already had a recall for the pcm/tcm and that didn't fix anything on the vehicle from that recall. But this problem that happened with me definitely needs to be recalled bc I wasn't near home and was by myself and I could have been hurt if my vehicle would have went up in flames.
